I just read an article on Times online about a gay ref in rugby and as it is a great read I decided to share it.
Gay referee takes pride of place in the tolerant world of ‘macho’ rugby

Kevin, but you seem to be able to talk out of your arse too...

I've been trying to read up on Richarlyson, here is what Sport.it says:

Richarlyson, 25 anni, ha le medesime caratteristiche tecniche di Pavel Nedved. (He has the technical traits as Pavel Nedved).

If this where to be the case, I wouldn't care what his does with his backside...

Been enjoying your blog since I stumbled onto it in google reader a couple weeks ago. Now I don't have to buy that shitty pink Gazetta della Sport, because one can't get Corriere dello Sport in Belgium. But you proabbly already know that, seeing how you live in Belgium as well. Is that true? Anyway, keep up the good work.

John, so are you thinking that the 10% in the US population is a figment of women having more kids in the 40s & 50s than today? And that with each woman having fewer kids the percent will decrease in future? Hmmm... I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's probably correct.

Whoever it is and whatever team he plays for, there will be hostitlity and prejudice from some. But when you think of the things Robinson went through, especially when the Dodgers traveled in the segregated South and when you think of the complete acceptance of all races in MLB today, I think you can say it was an incredible success and that the fans have benefitted greatly from it. I mean can you imagine what it would have been like to see Satchel Paige pitching against Babe Ruth?!

Perhaps you're right that Roma isn't the best place for someone to come out, but wherever it happens, there will be some hostile fans. It's up to those around them to point out the misguidedness of their ways.

One of the best things about this post has been the debate and discussion it has engendered. I only went back and read the comments, after leaving my own, but I'm really impressed by the thought and range of opinions. It's important for people to be able to talk through tough issues.

ady there is such thing as safe sex. the reason for those stats is condoms, the pill n less people wanting kids as women r more career oriented. I doubt the gay population increas has any effect on that. your prob right atbout there being hiden gays in the sport tho.

i see the comparison to robinson but its still different. i think he would be tollerated. maybe roma shouldnt be the first place for a gay person to come tho. we dont want a few hostile fans to make all the roma fans out to be holigans by doing something dumb that gets publicity around the world. if hes got the ability id welcome him to roma. leave the personal life out of it.

Thank you for a thoughtful and well reasoned post Chris. As you say, people don't choose to be gay any more than they choose to be black or white, short or tall, male or female.

Approximately, 10% of the US population is gay and that percentage increases based on the number of previous pregnancies a woman has had (as her body develops antibodies to androgens produced by a male fetus) so the percentage in Catholic countries with many pregnancies should be higher. So I think you are absolutely correct - there are already gay players in the league.

In some ways, the arrival of an openly gay player would be a lot like Jackie Robinson's arrival at the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 - it would indeed be distracting and some people would be openly hostile. But if, like Robinson, the guy could really contribute to the team, I think he would eventually be accepted, both by the fans and in the lockeroom. And eventually, it would be no big deal.

In other ways, this is a bit different. Robinson couldn't hide his skin color, but gay men can live in hiding, so one 'out' player might spark a number of revelations, especially if he was successful.

I think this is something whose time has come, because I'm with you 100%. Whether or not I like someone has nothing to do with their skin color, gender, weight, height, national origin or sexual orientation. In fact, I like knowing people from a wide variety of backgrounds - it expands my horizons and makes life interesting.

So thank you again for such a thoughtful post.

Oh, and I hope Richarlyson works out for you, whatever his sexual orientation.
