A Quick Memo to Barcelona

By: Chris | May 25th, 2007

I just want to post a quick response to this utter piece of garbage.

I must have missed it because even Italian media wouldn’t stoop so low as to print such complete nonsense.

Daniele De Rossi is not for sale. He has never been for sale. He will never be for sale. He is a Giallorossi player for life and will be remembered as a legend for the remainder of his days and beyond. That is something you cannot buy with any amount of money. He is quite simply: priceless.

What was your wildest dream as a child? Would you give anything to have it? Would a couple million euros make you throw it away? Daniele De Rossi is living his childhood dream. He was born in Rome. He grew up a Giallorossi faithful and remains to this day a Giallorossi faithful. His father was a Giallorossi player and the youth-team coach. It’s in his blood. He and Totti are the backbone and life of this team. The heartbeat of AS Roma goes as the heartbeats of Daniele and Francesco go.

No amount of money could pry Daniele away from The Eternal City. You sell your soul to the devil as a club to keep him around.

Got it, Barca? While you’re at it, please forward this to Ferguson.

* - Despite my constant references to Totti, Daniele De Rossi is my favorite person walking this earth. My heart would give out if he ever left Roma.

That goal he scored against Man Utd was unbelievable. Its a shame it got lost in Utd’s amazing performance that nite.

Must be photoshop or the like. If not, ummmm. Let’s hope Totti was aiming for another part of his anatomy.

Ilary cannot be happy about this.

Since Roma are going to be in the Champions League next year, I can’t imagine De Rossi leaving. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moving abroad in two or three years, depending on how Roma do.

I think when Roma kicked out Lyon in the CL, then defeated United in the first QF leg, a lot of people began paying attention to Roma instead of seeing them in the shadow of the three big Italian teams.

But now Roma have prove that they can be competitive with Milanx2 and Juventus next year, both at home and in Europe, if they want to keep their best players. These boys have tasted some European success, and it’s hard to forget, especially if they don’t snag a CL spot for 2008-2009, when Juventus will also be in the running.

I completely agree that next year won’t be a cakewalk with Juve returning, and the title race will be much closer, but I think Roma are in very good shape for a few years. At the moment, sans the Calciopoli deductions, the top five would look like this:
    1. Inter, who cares
    2. Roma, 72
    3. Fiorentina, 70
    4. Milan, 69
    5. Lazio, 67

Needless to say, parity at the top will return next year but I’m not worried about a CL spot until 2009(when they will need it, the final is in Rome). Milan is getting ancient outside of Gila/Kaka, Juventus is a shell of their scudetto winning selves, Lazio aren’t that talented and Inter can’t repeat this years performance. Truth be told, the team I’m worried about is Fiorentina, with Pazzini, Mutu and Montolivo they are going to be prolific to say the least. The thing is Roma as a squad are about to enter their prime. They have a lot of talented youth integrating into the starting XI. I’m not sure people realize how truly gifted guys like Aquilani, Okaka Chuka and Vucinic are. I’m very comfortable in saying they should be a Champions League team for the next few years, but can’t assure that they will be.

As for De Rossi, Totti stayed at the club despite UEFA Cup appearances and even a relegation battle. I fully expect De Rossi to do the same. You can’t put a price tag on your legacy. There was a quote by Alan Shearer after he signed with Newcastle over ManU, I don’t remember it exactly but it was something like, “If I signed with United, at the end of my career I would be just another great player. At Newcastle, they’ll build a statue in my name when I retire.” You can’t buy that.

Very nice breakdown, I agree witht he aging Milan idea but for some reason they are like a good Wine or Scotch they just get better with age. All they need is a youth injection into the experienced mix and they will always be a contender.
