I am personally offended by the implication that Ronaldo is better than Figo, let alone anyone greater than Figo. Figo was all about precision and phemenal skill. The only thing phenomenal about ronaldo is his speed. Skill isn't a necessity in the EPL and that's where the problem starts. The most skilled player in the EPL is Hleb, and he can't buy goals because he plays joga bonito instead of bullying his way to goals like most of the EPL does. Damn him for relying on skill.

He is right about the travesty of being an english football "critic". It is more close to being cronies. Even the english refs r too buddy-buddy with the players. Like Gerrard praising Mark Clattenberg (who should be nowhere near a football field), and surprise, suprise- Clattenberg repeatedly giving non-existent PKs to Lvpool.

English pundits can't assess the game. Like the majority of their players and managers, they don't know much about it!

Gabby, thanks for the link. I have always agreed with tht view of Ronaldo. I have noticed time and again that he just does not take control of games where the other team is playing well with their stars (and I confess to deriving some pleasure from that, bcoz of his diving and cheating). I wouldn't care two hoots about the media hype about C. Ronaldo, but what has always bothered me the most is comparing him to truly *great* players. Great players should be much more than statistics-- they have that something extra that earns respect to the game, they lead their team when the chips are down. He is just not that player. To compare him to Pele, Maradona is frankly a joke on footballing greatness. I am confident that if Barca play well and are in form, he will again disappear and pout. I have full confidence that a fit Messi in UCL will completely overshadow him. Messi is destined for greater things.

Gab, it's true and not surprising. Ronaldo can beat up Roma all he wants. But Dunphy's bang on -- he vanishes in big games: against teams of United's strength, size and money. He's tortured us 3 times now, I'm no dummy. It's not hard to beat us up when you're surrounded by 200 million in talent from 10 other players on the pitch with you.

See him against Milan, twice at San Siro in crucial 2nd legs. Kaka's carried Milan to two european finals already and played well in both. Different category altogether. I don't rate Ronaldo as one of the best 8 players in the world, let alone best.

Having said that, if Ronaldo plays big against Barca and gets United to the Final or wins it, I'm not going to be a fool to say he's not a big game player.

But I am certainly saying that now.

SGM, you are being generous even with those %s let's be honest here.

One thing about what Gab said, with which I am in complete accordance: people who criticize Barzagli with Palermo ... missing the point of evaluating footballers. Look at Barzagli with the azzurri -- dare I say, Scirea-esque -- and judge him then. Anyway, he's off to ponte vecchio.

Cazzano> for me Torres is a fun speculation, with a 0.05% possibility of reality. But while I dont think Roma can get him, I do think that if Lvpool cannot sort out the loan, they may be forced to sell. Who else can they sell to get >30 mill euros? they definitely will not sell Gerrard. If that happens, he may head for Real Madrid etc.
