Roma v Livorno Postgame Review

By: chris | April 19th, 2008

Roma drew the worst team in calcio. That’s secondary right now.

Francesco Totti has torn a ligament and will be out six months. Now is time to let the mourning begin.

    Stefan,

I think that going after Torres wouldn’t necessarily be a great idea. Is he kicking ass at Liverpool because he’s coming into his prime, or because his style fits better within the rough and tumble play of the EPL than on the Iberian peninsula?

I believe in the latter, more than the former.

Lucio’s gaffes were the main reason that Luca “Pimp” Toni had to come save Bayern from Getafe at the last minute.

Hell, Lucio’s fuck-ups have single-handedly driven Toni’s price up to “Bayern will kill and eat anyone who tries to touch him.”

I’d rather have Samuel Kuffour back than Lucio. At least we know Sammy K is going to be stuck on the training pitch, which is where Lucio belongs.

    And I’m not joking.

I’d take Barzagli and maybe Ujfalusi (for rotation)
Barzagli always look good with reliable defenders next to him

Ujfaluji- hmm, dont quite know abt that either. Isn’t he getting old? He has been shaky against pacy wingers this season, but generally solid. Should not cost that much either. Sergio Ramos case is interesting. Rumors of fall-out within Madrid, but who knows? He wants to become the “next Maldini”, and I am all for having such lofty goals! He might as well try becoming the spanish maldini in Rome. what say?

I don’t like busting peoples’ bubbles but Torres has stated that Liverpool is the only team he wants to play for aside from Atletico Madrid. I don’t know if he said that to win over the fans or he was a Liverpool supporter. Possibly a little of both.

I’ve seen Lucio play and as a starter.. no thank you. He loves to dribble so much and makes sloppy passes all over. It’s like DP in the central defensive position. Think of all those ridiculous mistakes DP makes in the opposition half.. Now imagine them just outside Doni’s box.

However that said.. with a competent partner he does do alright statistically speaking. Brazil let in 2 goals in the WC, Bayern seem to be on track for having the best defense in the history of the Bundesliga..

My friend is a Bayern fan and he starts to cry when Lucio is on the ball.. He complains that he’s always attacking (even more than Mexes and Juan) and I saw him concede the most ridiculous goal this season. He gets the ball in his box with no opponents near him, starts his run up the field, loses it to an opponent (who was not pressuring him initially), and Bayern concede. I just cracked up when I saw that.

I think the players to complete this team are Toni, Mutu, Vargas, a replacement for Ferrari (Mathieu), and possibly Amelia.

Bashar, I dont think the Torres speculations are bcoz he wants to leave Lvpool. LFC may HAVE to sell him, since they r unable to replay the 1-year loan tht bought him. Most prob they will be able to refinance, but if he gets sold it will not be because he wants to leave. And Torres saying he only wants to play for Lvpool/Athletico is kinda unbelievable..he might have tht attitude only till Rafa sticks around, which I dont see beyond the next 1 year or so. Moreover, I am not sure if Torres is among the most intelligent strikers or not– epl doesnt quite test someone on tht.

I know it’s funny to have a laugh about the names being bandied about … but are you people wasting prime time life no a serious debate about Torres?

This may sound harsh, but …

ROMA HAVE 0% CHANCE OF BUYING FERNANDO TORRES.

Stefan, If we had to fit in Gomez I’d simply rotate the top two between Totti, Torres, Gomez and Vuci or if we’re being really aggressive (which I think we can afford with a 3 man defence flanked by two wingbacks) drop Totti back behind Torres and Gomez. But seriously this 3-5-2 is amazing. When defending we can have 5 men back (not including De Rossi) and still ave a two man midfield with 3 attacking players. The wingbacks provide width on the pitch and when we are on the ball we still have a solid defence, a massive midfield, a playmaker and two strikers. The key to this system are the wingbacks that need a massive mount of pace and stamina as well as attacking and defending abilities. Cicinho has it in my opinion. I think Vargas would be ideal. On the bench however, I don’t think that wither Max or Cassetti have the strength… wait ignore that - ofcourse they do (but as backups)!

But as Baby W says… I think Torres is wishful thinking. Too many things have to go in order to go that way considering he just signed for Pool. But with the extra cash, hopefully, a guy (or 3 hehe) in his class is realistic!

Cazzano> for me Torres is a fun speculation, with a 0.05% possibility of reality. But while I dont think Roma can get him, I do think that if Lvpool cannot sort out the loan, they may be forced to sell. Who else can they sell to get >30 mill euros? they definitely will not sell Gerrard. If that happens, he may head for Real Madrid etc.

SGM, you are being generous even with those %s let’s be honest here.

One thing about what Gab said, with which I am in complete accordance: people who criticize Barzagli with Palermo … missing the point of evaluating footballers. Look at Barzagli with the azzurri — dare I say, Scirea-esque — and judge him then. Anyway, he’s off to ponte vecchio.

Gab, it’s true and not surprising. Ronaldo can beat up Roma all he wants. But Dunphy’s bang on — he vanishes in big games: against teams of United’s strength, size and money. He’s tortured us 3 times now, I’m no dummy. It’s not hard to beat us up when you’re surrounded by 200 million in talent from 10 other players on the pitch with you.

See him against Milan, twice at San Siro in crucial 2nd legs. Kaka’s carried Milan to two european finals already and played well in both. Different category altogether. I don’t rate Ronaldo as one of the best 8 players in the world, let alone best.

Having said that, if Ronaldo plays big against Barca and gets United to the Final or wins it, I’m not going to be a fool to say he’s not a big game player.

But I am certainly saying that now.

Gabby, thanks for the link. I have always agreed with tht view of Ronaldo. I have noticed time and again that he just does not take control of games where the other team is playing well with their stars (and I confess to deriving some pleasure from that, bcoz of his diving and cheating). I wouldn’t care two hoots about the media hype about C. Ronaldo, but what has always bothered me the most is comparing him to truly *great* players. Great players should be much more than statistics– they have that something extra that earns respect to the game, they lead their team when the chips are down. He is just not that player. To compare him to Pele, Maradona is frankly a joke on footballing greatness. I am confident that if Barca play well and are in form, he will again disappear and pout. I have full confidence that a fit Messi in UCL will completely overshadow him. Messi is destined for greater things.

He is right about the travesty of being an english football “critic”. It is more close to being cronies. Even the english refs r too buddy-buddy with the players. Like Gerrard praising Mark Clattenberg (who should be nowhere near a football field), and surprise, suprise- Clattenberg repeatedly giving non-existent PKs to Lvpool.

I am personally offended by the implication that Ronaldo is better than Figo, let alone anyone greater than Figo. Figo was all about precision and phemenal skill. The only thing phenomenal about ronaldo is his speed. Skill isn’t a necessity in the EPL and that’s where the problem starts. The most skilled player in the EPL is Hleb, and he can’t buy goals because he plays joga bonito instead of bullying his way to goals like most of the EPL does. Damn him for relying on skill.
