Wherefore Art Thou, News?
By: chris | July 6th, 2008I think the recent quote from Enzo Maresca’s agent can sum up the last week quite aptly:
“I know nothing of the things that were written in the papers. Actually, I am curious to know the source of this news.â€
All in all, complete speculation from the mass media. Why? Because everyone’s waiting for Adrian Moo Moo.
Now let’s hope tomorrow morning brings a slew of interesting nuggets brimming with truth.
(Well done, Goduerza)

lorenzo, i completely understand what you are saying and not necessarily disagreeing with you. i’m only pointing out that we did pay ‘only’ 20 mil (or specifically 19.25 mill) which was the amount that you thought he should be valued at.
regardless, i’m not sure on the specifics on how the co-ownerships work, at least not the finer details. what i understand, though, is that when it comes to settling up, it is the current valuation that reigns. so if roma paid 7.25 mil a year earlier and the player’s value increases, then presumably the other team is on the hook for the difference, which in this case is circa 12-13 mill. (for a mutually agreed current value of 20 mil)
i’m taking cue from the official press release on roma’s official website which states that roma and lecce agreed to a price / value in the summer of 07 and roma ended up purchasing vucinic outright (momentarily) for 7.5 mill (after the original 3.5 from sunner of 06) and then sold back 1/2 for 3.75mil to restore the co-ownership status. the cue is that they had agreed to a value in summer of 07 of roughly 15 mil with roma dishing out an additional 3.75 to top up the 50% that belongs to lecce.
i assume this is the perk for a team like lecce in that they ‘gamble’ in a co-ownership arrangement (rather than a ’safer’ outright sale) in the hopes that his value increases during his tenure with the team he’s loaned out to. otherwise i dont really see an advantage for a team like lecce to consider a co-ownership situation, particularly with a quality player like vucinic who likely could have been sold elsewhere quite easily.
i can see this working the opposite way too. assume that roma paid 7.25 mil (3.5 + 3.75) but vucinic was a disaster and his worth devalued below 15 mil (assumed value in the summer of 07) the following year. how would your premise deal with that scenario? maybe there is a parallel in the case of esposito (i think he was co-owned…or was it just a loan?) where his value certainly didnt appreciate while at roma.

Just to upset more ppl.. We are after Di Natale as well! So if we get Di Natale and Mutu I assume there will be riots on the streets. The two people who have the greatest amount of opposition.

also, to touch on another point, lorenzo, i’m not so sure that we could have gotten him for “considerably cheaper”. if we are to believe the rumours and alleged offers from real madrid and man u reporteded in the media, then he was obviously in demand. players in demand are usually not going to come all that cheap.

Co-ownership deals were necessary because we couldn’t afford the full rights to the player. The value is based on what the team is willing to let him go for. Lecce were not willing to go lower than 12 mn. Our options were to buy him for that price or go into envelopes and bid. Lecce could outbid us, get him for that 12 mn, and sell him for 20 mn. We didn’t want to take the risk so we paid up. I think he’s worth it.

so if Blonde 19 comes to Roma can we sign another non EU player?
like Neves?

Bashar, the news of Pavlichenko on those sites you mentioned are all speculation linking us with a move for him, that paragraph Johnny posted says we are signing him, with confirmation coming tomorrow. Can anyone confirm from any other sources? At least its movement on the mercato. Finally! Simeone will have competition for crown of worst finisher on the team.

Gabby, Pavlichenko wouldn’t have EU citizenship, no, so we wouldn’t be able to sign another non-EU player. Damn, never thought of that. Does Neves hold any other passports?

you can sign 2 non EU players BUT one has to be a replacement of a player you have !

does Barusso have an italian passport ?!

yes, and if roma did in fact think it would have been too risky to lose him for nothing, i’m sure the fact that they had already paid out 7.25 mil was weighing on their collective minds. they would have not only risked losing a standout player out of the starting lineup but also whatever asset they had in him (7.25 mil). losing an additional 7.25 mil and relatively nothing to show for it (other than his services which is already covered by wages) would have been disasterous…but predictable for roma’s style of doing business.
then again, i also mentioned that i am not surprised that italpertoli is in such a severe debt in an era where oil companies are making record profits.

RomaFan, I’m not so sure. Each Serie A Club can only sign one non-EU player from abroad per season. There are plans in place to increase that number to two, but that won’t come into effect until next season or the season after that (not sure which). Barusso, when we got him, came from another Italian club so that doesn’t count.

Who is our non-EU player? (Barusso is at Siena for this year).
I think Juan, Cicinho, Taddei, Mancini and Doni all have Italian passports. Do Vucinic and Pizarro?

That don’t have to have Italian citizenship, just citizenship from an EU country.

Lamagica. Hi to you man. Finally I have tracked you down. While on the EURO blog you had asked me about the Italian football scandal prior to WC06. I had told you that Italy’s participation in the WC06 stunk because while Greece was banned from participating for match fixing (in their league) Italy who was facing one of the worst match fixing scandals ever was not. I answered you since you had threatened to “tear me apart”. And after answering you - complete silence. Not even a whimper. How come man? Speechless in Seattle:) LOL
