VotD: Roma 3 – Al Ahly 0

By: chris | August 6th, 2008

By some minor miracle the game was actual streamed today so if you had nothing to do or sit in a cubicle where you can constantly peek for oncoming threats, you were able to watch the game. Nothin’ special. Good old friendly win as the boys get closer and closer to fitness. A few things I wrote down during the game:

Okaka has an acute case of Pippo-itis. Constantly offside. Hear the cure for that is showering, which Pippo hasn’t done since October 1993. Missed a sitter at the end too. Still, he’s not that far away. Had a perfectly legit goal called back. Though he may wanna work on the hair. Buns only work if you’re from the Iberian peninsula. Just ask Camoranesi.

• The absolute best thing Roma could do this mercato season is get King Alberto healthy. Seriously. Screw money, where’s Doogie Howser M.D. when you need him?

Espo just looks lost. And like 7 seconds after I typed this (taking notes), he scores a goal which Cicinho assisted on from the fourth row of the stands. Wow these officials are shit.

• Steaming run from Brighi on his goal. Love to see that from him.

Burritos Alvarez was doing the only thing he can do: push the ball ahead and hope to run by everyone. Luckily they were playing in Egypt and he could.

Sebastian Mladen played. No idea what, if anything, this means, but given Spalletti’s recent aversion to youth, bringing a 16 year old to Egypt and playing him is promising. Or maybe he’s got a Romanian quota. Hence Pit and the now archived Project Mutu.

There’s actually a plausible theory somewhere in there. Who knew?

Simone Loria looks like something, just not a footballer. Can’t figure it out. Maybe a rugby player. Or my doorman. Keep you updated until I figure it out.

• This three Brazilian keepers shit is going to shave decades off my life.

i’m in with the Quagli – Huntelaar ticket. either would fill out the front holes, just as George suggests. this leaves aan attacking 4-2-1-3 or solid 4-3-2-1. heck, you could even pull a 4-4-2 with Totti and Vuci up front and the midfield packed, plus some good back-ups on the bench.

still need a striker/winger option for when Totti and/or Vuci can’t play.

    and for the record,i belive
    paris hilton is always avilable

I don’t know why the management have such a hard on for Malouda.. I don’t get it. He’s their 1st or 2nd choice? Seriously?

If we get him over Milito I will be pissed.

Damn.. we will have a ton of free kick takers next season. Totti, De Rossi, Aquliani, Riise, Vucinic, Baptista (possibly), Pizarro, Cicinho (?)…

I dont think Totti is going to be taking them as much, I think De Rossi and Riise are going to take over

you know what, we should have gotten Pablo Aimar for the wing, he only costed 6.5 million and he is amazing… then we could have signed Huntleear for sure

Wudnt mind Vincente for the left wing at all but dont think he will ever leave valencia. He is a native of the city so dont see that happening.
But if he was up for grabs , he wud fit in well for us.

Barusso scored in a friendly for Siena against Ascoli. They lost 3-1.

For the long free kicks it would be Totti.
Short free kicks I would go with Baptista or Riise.
    Indirect will be Pizarro.

But I’m just saying that if anyone is hurt we have 3 or 4 more who can take them. Panucci can take indirect ones as well.

Vicente is arguably more injury prone than Kewell and Cisse.. But that’s okay.

I cant wait for some of those thunderbolts from Riise.
Fuck i wudnt mind if some of them dont go in , as long as it takes the likes of Chivu , Mancini or couple more Inter players with the ball , i am fine.

I don’t know how Arsenal expect to win the title this year. They lost Flamini and Hleb and only signed Nasri, Vela and a few youngsters.

Bashar, not to troll here, but- “I don’t know how Roma expect to win the title this year. They lost Giuly, Mancini, Ferrari and have only signed Loria, Riise, and promoted a few youngsters.”

Giuly and Ferrari were bench players. Mancini is the only one that needs to be replaced.

3 players is what we need to challenege all the way.
One CF , One AMC , One who can play LW/RW.
2 can be straight buys and one can be loan with option to buy

i don’t think Baptista is going to replace Mancini – i think he is going to be more a replacement for Giuly with the line-up shuffled. he is an attacking midfielder who can be played up flexibly (see my previous question to john silver), but i am not really sure how he is going fit in. i think he will prove useful against teams like Milan and Inter, possibly Fiorentina.

at a complete loss on the malouda thing.

how much are they looking to spend on him? how much did we get for Giuly, 2.5 m. euro? and we are going to replace him with a guy who scored 2 times in 20 games. what the fuck was he playing in those games, fullback?

(Ludi hit the net 17 out of 32 times and Cici scored as much as Malouda last year)

this is the stupidest transfer market i have ever seen

…and i thought the Ljungberg thing was a joke. that dude better come with a walker and a sippy-cup. for that much coin i could get my grandfather out on the pitch and have enough left for two real strikers.

i wish someone would pass the crack pipe so that the fans can feel as comfortable about all of this as the higher powers. who are we kidding – we struggled last year with AM and LG, we traded them and are looking for replacements who make them look like they were champions when we had them. so we are now going to have to struggle more this year?

why do we not have cash? Sensi runs a damn oil company. who was not making buckets of money selling oil this year? this is total bullshit.

I agree Alessio.. But Spalletti isn’t going out saying that we will win the title for sure.

The reason I bring up Arsenal is stuff like this:
    http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=807664

And this is just one of a few articles and quotes that make them really confident and I don’t see how they are so confident. I have nothing against that team and I would prefer they win rather than United or Liverpool but still.

Ferrari was a bench player and Mancini was rubbish (relatively) last year. If he had stayed and performed like he did the past season he would actually hurt us rather than help us. Giuly’s loss is a big one but with players like Baptista and maybe 1 more we can make up for it.

They lost 2 defensive midfielders and haven’t replaced them with anybody. Nasri replaces Hleb and more but Arsenal needed a few signings last year and this year they need even more. Maybe if they got Xabi Alonso or Barry it would make up for it but they just made no real signings and think they can win the CL and title? I don’t buy it.

Well.. reading it again he doesn’t actually say they will win for sure. But he’s overly confident and that will come bite them in the ass. They lost a lot of quality that they have not replaced yet and think they can do better.

Same with us right now. We can’t realistically compete for the scudetto like we did last year but with 1 or 2 signings we would’ve replaced Giuly and a mediocre Mancini plus we added Riise.

can’t say i care at all about arsenal

agree with Alessio. right now we are not even in it. With Gila, Fiore are stronger than Rome right now.
nobody is asking Spaletti to say we are going to win, just that we have a solid shot.
and while i agree with you on most things, Bashar, if you thought Mancini was rubbish (i don’t think he was great but i wouldn’t say rubbish) wait till we replace him with Malooser.

and Giuly wasn’t anything amazing either but wait to see how much you miss him when we have NO ONE to replace him.

think about the first 10 games of the year.

Napoli, Palermo are the first 2. without Totti, we’ve got u’ cazz’.
Then Atalanta, Udine, Sampdoria, Inter, Juve. this is only the first 10. so we are going to be up against these guys with what? Vuci and Monti, or Vuci and Espo up front?
    lets make some bets

    who wants to be serious?
