Under A Snowy White Top

Roma v Inter

They couldn’t be any more different, and yet spotlights will be hung from the Olimpico roof shining unproductively onto the sidelines below. On one side the hot young coach with a glittering player CV red-carpeted by football’s premier club into the trade, wielding the faddish system like a good son; the other the well-traveled and weathered old veteran of humble beginnings on both sides of the line, with a system for which few neutrals would ever pay a dime. One modernly Spanish, the other classically Italian.

Frankly, I dislike Enrique’s system on a completely subjective basis. Threading the ball around the patchwork defensive back four waiting for something to develop amidst the sea of shirts still trying to form a cohesive chemistry ahead just doesn’t get my motor revving. It’s akin to watching an art teacher at the local university attempt to recreate a Picasso with a inferior materials – he doesn’t have the right tools and the end product may allow for the general idea, but it’s just not the same. Few, if any, will bow in reverence at its sight. A burst of expression here, a moment of promise there, but the overwhelming feel is the natural flow has been discarded and overlooked for a kitschy replica. At current, Roma just doesn’t have the players. That doesn’t mean it won’t work on a consistent basis eventually, but it’s less aesthetic to my eye than, say, Spalletti’s movement-first system (even highlights of Perrotta circa ‘07 still fill orphanages) or a well-executed defensive structure. The beauty of football, for me, is in the quality of execution of the system, not in the system itself.

Sometimes they hit. Sometimes they don’t. Maybe today, maybe someday…

Nevertheless, there stands across the half no man in Serie A better suited to counteract Enrique’s system – a gift bestowed upon birth. Perhaps a team or two better, but no man. The Roman system has proven to be easily counteracted when done correctly, simply, and humbly. Thus this becomes a matchup of men and systems and snow and possibly lots of people grumbling about how they never ever should’ve played this game – and by the third minute at that.

None of it may come to matter. The game may never go off, or the game may be defined by the weather, the pitch, or Luis Enrique slyly attempting to use a snowman as a 12th man to allow Aleandro Rosi to push up just a bit higher. The afternoon will tell.

A perfect battle of systems, of the elements, of men.

This all would make a rather decent Hollywood trailer. Vintage Roma v Inter.

Squad

Pfft.

XI

Maaarten
Rosi, Juan, Heinze, Taddei
Gago, DDR, Pjanic
Totti, Borini, Lamela

Frighteningly, that might be Roma’s best possible lineup…that Luis is willing to run out in his system, anyway. (Nico notwithstanding.)

Yup – said it.

I had not visited before the game. Reading the pre-match comments leading into the game and then post game has been almost as entertaining as the game! It's nice to see the cries turn into joy!

I liked this game leading into it for many reasons but today even exceeded my expectations. I did not expect Roma to be as dominating.

    This is Roma!

The game in Cagliari was frustrating but expected from a growing team. Not as much to do with LE except maybe he didn't have them ready enough. Maybe he himself was a little too lax going into it. Jekyl and Hyde?

Everyone was ready today. In Cagliari Totti was far from the same Totti as he was today, ad to that no DDR on the pitch, and it makes it very hard for this system. Everything struggles... movement, creativity, defense. Today was a good representation of Roma and still showing increasing potential. There will be inconsistency which is expected but the goal with this current Roma seems very clear. Never a slave to the result. Roma are one of the only Serie A clubs that have a true identity. Lazio Udinese do not. 3rd place will be Roma's if they keep there drive and focus.

Perfect timing by Danielino. A spectacular performance and signs the dotted line.

This is an awesome time to be a Roma fan!

    Grazie Capitano Futuro!

    Grazie Roma!

  • Baldini: "Daniele De Rossi ha rinnovato il contratto con la Roma per i prossimi 5 anni"

    Forza Danielino <3

  • Sterling

Our long international nightmare is over: Danielino will renew for 5 years.

As Awesome Sundays go, this is a good one. :)

  • Wow. What a great day.

  • Lucian

Yup, word (Baldini's) is that De Rossi has signed.

  • Ej_gutbarr

GUESS WHOS STAYING IN TOWN. MOTHAFUCKING DDR BITCHES!!!!

    http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com...

BALDINIS WORD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR ME...

  • Jonas

Mercato. De Rossi fondamentale, possiamo aggiungere qualcosa sul contratto?
"Si, voglio dire qualcos'altro. Quest'anno ci viene concessa pazienza,
la gente deve sapere che De Rossi ha un accordo con la Roma per i
prossimi 5 anni e domani ci sarà una conferenza stampa in cui parleremo
    di questo accordo"

tomorrow press conference about the deal!

  • AndersCaroe

Baldini just confirmed that DDR has renewed! Press conference tomorrow! Fuck yeah!

  • We have great starting eleven, and few great subs (Osvaldo, Bojan), but not enough depth in defence and Danielino is the difference. He is in prime, and best footballer in the world in his position.

So problem is, what happens when DDR is injured. And LE must solve why it happens, there has to be working back-up plan.

And Danielino is NOT going anywhere. After that kind of performance, he will stay and guide us to next scudetto, in next two seasons.

    Dinastia Romana has been revived.

  • Jonas

well I already named my cat Totti, I want to name my first son Francesco and my second one Daniele...and now I'm seriously doubting to name my third one Fabio (the Borini one, not Simplicio)

  • masonio

Didn't you say your kid's favourite toy was..yeah.

  • J2110

As a FM player, i strongly recommend the ' why can't you play like this every match!' team talk to LE

seriously though this was a fucking performance and a half

  • Marquinho must have liked what he saw from the stands today.

  • Jonas

maybe cauz Taddei has been rather consistently good at the fullback (both left AND right), I can't imagine Marquinho being better option than Taddei (at the moment, experience and all)

I think next weekend against Siena is the perfect time to sub him on around 70ish minute so he can run pas those tired Siena legs (be it as a back or even wing in the 4 3 3 for Lamela or Borini)

  • sloane

i was in and out of the game, but 4-0, amazing! from what i saw no luck involved, this was absolutely deserved win! hate that ranieri with his roma history lose so bad, but love inter taking a beating. it was like they were not even there. ranieri still so stale.

correct me if i am wrong...

    totti = god
    borini = baby jesus
    de rossi = mother mary

  • Bren

A win over Inter is always great, no matter the score or means of victory

  • Stefan15

I feel bad for Bojan, he prob could have been the top scorer for Roma at this point, but was unlucky with the amount of chances he missed. Unfortunate =/

  • gio

i will probably get jeered for making positive comments here, but i did see a couple of things that looked good today. as i see it, the big change is that there is some semblance of an attacking formation being employed ... guys actually gathering in the box while crosses are being dumped in.

i won't get too positive (there are still some big issues, like episodes of 7 of our players being less than 3 meters apart leaving wide open space everywhere else), and despite that Inter were not playing with 2 of their biggest game changers, Sneider and Stankovic (Palumbo taking all their free kicks now?), there were a couple of things factors to which i chalk up the difference:

    1. a hint of attacking formation

    2. (what i was most happy to see...) a "don't give up pressing and attacking attitude even when we are up 2 or 3 points

    3. Taddei has really raised the bar with his skills and efforts. somewhere around 4 or 5  games ago i said he made no sense as a wingback, but now i would be willing to see him hold that position. he made some nice passes, worked the ball well, and even defended decently at times.

    4. Totti is definitely back and no one can tell me he was playing this well last year.

    5. finally, while not necessarily by design of Enrique, some of the players are beginning to see some consistency - mainly owing to other players being injured.

    6.  have been saying it for months, but finally, Owaldo being out has thankfully given Borini the chance to show his shit.

if Enrique actually decides to play most of these same players next week, we might be able to really see some growth with the team. hurray!

  • FrankieASR

Nice... If Roma can make a believer out of you then fuck the future must be bright!  :)

  • davidk8

Why jeer, man, we all want the best for Roma, right? I've said it a month or so ago that I will support LE, as long as the players and the board is behind him. And you know that my opinions of LE and the team's direction were similar to yours. But me personally, I see improvement and loses happen to every team, especially the ones in the rebuilding phase. There are issues that need to be addressed but we're moving forward.

  • :)

  • To ALL BOJAN HATERS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... just shhhh 3 players around him, he kept tha ball, turned around and scored. Im just thinking, Osvaldo would lose that ball even if there was only one defender :P

  • FrankieASR

I don't think there have been too many Bojan haters. Nobody questioned his raw talent but he has lacked that killer instinct in front of goal lately. I've been convinced it's been a confidence thing. He shows today how much of a killer he can be.

I like that LE now that he seems to have his core rotation going that he's keeping the players hungry and eager to perform. Bojan proves his value to himself and the team which will only fuel both sides. Competition is very good for the team. When Osvaldo is back and Lamela and Borini continues to impress, Roma can have a deadly attack

If I remember correctly you were a pretty BIG Borini hater. Even said you were happy when he was injured, to give Bojan more playing time!?!

    You crazy man ;)

    Forza Roma!

  • Yeah, i was that hater, and i still stand behind my words for those game he played but now i am glad that he has proven me wrong and im starting to like him and i hope hi continues to play like this. But man did u see that goal from Bojan?! It was so skill full xD And yeah i am still a Osvaldo hater :D Cheers mate

  • Johnny

Come on many there have been many Bojan haters, saying things like no wonder barca shipped his ass off, and calling him a joke, I would say 2/3 of this board has once called for sending his ass back

  • FrankieASR

I said "too many" meaning I realize there have been some criticism but I don't think he has really been out of form long enough to really get killed by critics.

The comments are starting to shift to being more supportive now but I would say 2/3 of this board has been LE and Osvaldo hate... with Bojan, Kjear, finding there place. A couple of rough games and the hate resurfaces

Don't get me wrong. I actually like it all. Shutting the critics up is always good to feed on. LE, Osvaldo, Bojan, Borini, Totti, are all prime examples

  • Many people criticise him..U can even see those people criticis in comments up when Borini scored his first and second of the game. I saw about 5 and more negative comments for Bojan..

  • Stefan15

Many tend to forget that were a project in the making. LE is improve this team game by game. He may stumble at times but that's all part of the learning process. And please remember that it also depends on the players performance as whole, not just the coach. I'm glad a lot of my fellow romanisti have noticed this =)

  • Stefan15

     *improving

  • The stats for today's game says one thing - DOMINATING !!

  • Now this is one of the reason I am a Roma fan. One day show me how to sulk and next day show me how to be ecstatic.

    GRAZIE ROMA !!!

To all the detractors - get one thing clear that LE isn't going anywhere. Accept it and trust me you'll enjoy the games more and look forward to the future with glee

  • as roma fan

LIVESOCCER fooled me it said the game will start at 10:00 am sharp and i woke up just now and the game is over DARN YOU TO HELL LIVE SOCCER YOU MADE ME MISS THIS EPIC MATCH .. WHEN IS THE REPLAY?

  • Kilo15

Shame on you for still waking up late even for the wrong time!

  • as roma fan

  • Stefan15

replay is on the score channel< that is if you live in canada

  • as roma fan

    how about the US?

  • masonio

    Use ESPN3 if you can.

  • Jonas

I know I said that  we shouldn't be overoptimistic after a big win ala Cesena one, but boy this was different: 4-0 against Inter, treble winners not so long ago, they were going on a great run before Lecce (6 games won in a row or something like that), players under pressure like Juan and Bojan showed up, we held the 0 once again...

unconsitent as hell but a fine day nonetheless, just rememeber, a draw in Catania will probably devaluate this win as with a Catania win we jump to fifth, 4 points from Udine and 2 from Nazio! it would be shame not to push through the assault on top 5 with a game in hand, we all have it in our hands now

nice fact: we are now the third most high scoring team in serie A leaving Lazio, Juve and Inter all behind us (Udine and Milan scored more I think)

  • Dane Penn

If someone can put up a replay of the game for download I'll name my dog after your first born child's favorite toy's brand name. Grazie

  • Jonas

even if that toy's name is 'my dick'?

    just joking mate

  • Kilo15

    You are a sick man.

  • Jonas

    I'm a romanista...which probably is the same

  • masonio

    Grazie Roma.

Reading over the earlier comments it was sad to see so many not have faith in Roma. I get confidence is down after being cut apart by Cagliari but it was still our first league loss in 7 or so matches. Even with low confidence I wouldn't doubt us. Whatever, I guess that's how sports work.

I told my new American friend after Cagliari that this Inter match would be the type of match la maggica would have won. When everyone is against us and expects nothing of us.

Loved the confidence Piscitella showed. I remember Caprari looked a lot more nervous. He was a year younger, too, though.

  • hence i got away from the board for a day after that loss.  No point calling for LE's head or going all insane because LE is here to stay , the project is here to stay and things will only improve and I rather see all the crap happen now so the management has a good look and can work in those areas and get us the players.

Loss is a part of every game and a horrible pathetic day like that has always been a part of Roma - so whether it's LE or Carlo or whover it's going to be the same.

Ppl need to just stfu and realize LE isn't going anywhere.

  • Kilo15

That's why I appreciate you two's comments.  You guys are consistently level headed.  I'm just glad I was wrong about the outcome of this game today.  Call it a defense mechanism to ease the potential pain of another loss.

  • You know what blows ?

When the season started everyone wrote this season off and rightly so because we were going to just slowly but surely fix the pieces of puzzle and see how it's going to look like by the end of the year and that's exactly what's been the goal of the management.

Few wins and fuck everyone wants Champions League or Scudetto and they forget what was goal of the season. It doesn't work that way.

Above all else one thing people tend to forget - the management wants to make money so they will do everything to make this a good team so they can compete so they can make money. They are not some morons who don't know what they are doing. They have hired the right people for a reason - so just fucking enjoy the ride. Let them do their work and let us do our work by supporting our team , our players and trust in our management.

  • OlandeseRomano

Well, as someone in the early comments predicted, Ranieri isn't one to change his game based on who he's playing against. Which is exactly why Inter didn't press high up the pitch and basically let us play our game. Totally Ranieri's fault, don't think Catania's gonna make it that easy for us... Daje!

  • Rudy_Roma

So glad I watched this game. Piscitella looked promising.

    DDR Blank cheque !!!

  • Chase

Only saw the last half hour, can't believe I missed the game!  What an unbelievable result!!!

    -  Looked like Inter never turned up today.

    - Partly because Juan played like Juan today rather than a shadow of himself.  He really can seal up a defense on his own when he plays his best, but can he still consistently play his best week in week out?  Hasn't done this season.

    -  How inconsistant are we to get thumped in midweek then demolish Inter like we just did?

    -  Not the Inter of old and didn't enjoy punishing Rainieri, so appreciate his passion for Roma and his dedication, BUT it's always good to beat Inter, bunch a dusche bags!

  • i can't wait for the ermes79 and soccerartist video highlight of this game... that would be one epic 4+ minutes of happiness

  • Armoracia

I can't wait for gio explaining that we actually sucked

  • Jon

great game. they couldnt even create a single chance!

  • Stefan15

Good for Borini and Bojan. Grande LE , fuck the haters and their pleads for Spal

  • haha Rock on!!

  • philipp_sebastian

Wow !! Amazing !!! I'm sooo happy. This will give our "young guns" some real confidence. Inter never looked like they have a chance today ! The whole team (including D) looked really solid !!! Grazie, Roma !

  • Los Rojiblancos

roma v inter and the stadium has all but 5 people? goodbye calcio.

  • AndersCaroe

It's been a time since this happened but:
    Grazie Ranieri!!

Piscitella also looked neat. Good technique and fast.

  • That just made my Sunday!

  • Armoracia

A great match, Inter was completely elminated. Juan had a great game, our passes were connecting (what a difference it makes when you have DDR... and Totti), we actually finished our chances and I am especially happy for Bojan. I think 90% of his issues are confidence-related.

  • Lucian

    What a goal by Bojan...

    Stats for who's interested

  • Jonas

if serie A was based on possesion only, we would be sure of the scudetto  already

  • Lucian

Too right. But we've got the possession thing down pat, now we can get the rest sorted out...

  • Lupo24

If we get 3 points from the rest of the Catania game...4 points away from Champions League, wow.

  • Sigre

This has been a fucking pleasure. I can't possibly explain how happy I am right now. I can't wait to see this game again tomorrow.

  • kurdt

    GRAZIE ROMA!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow that was great!

  • kurdt

Certainly didn't expect this score when i woke up this morning, 4 and a clean sheet. Life is wonderful.

  • tuJefa

My Kingdom for a link!! Please.. Daje Roma

  • ASR

Man I feel so happy for Bojan...he deserved it! Well done lad!

  • Now you can't do that if you have no talent !!
    Long time due !!

  • ForzaTotti

Wow if we beat Catania midweek we will actually leapfrog Inter into 5th place...A europa spot.

  • tomanista

    So we'll lose then.

  • A draw and we'll be on par. With what I don't know..

  • Armoracia

    I loled.

  • JCSol85

as good as Borini has played I just think that he could never score a goal like Bojan just did. He could be a phenom

  • Kilo15

lol I dont get this blog

  • Piscitella --> Bojan, He held of three and wow what a shot. tbh

  • Sammy10

First it snows in Rome. Now, Bojan scores. Miracles in Rome people, miracles.

  • Giallorossi56

    WAIT!?!?! Was that OUR Bojan?

  • masonio

Excellent. Needed that goal. Piscitella with a nice assist as well.

  • Lupo24

    THAT WAS NASTY!!! BOJANNN

  • That didn't just happen.

  • Giallorossi56

    It did, sir. It did.

  • Arfaestnes

    BOJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

  • JCSol85

Piscitella had to be a hipster...

  • davidk8

Was just going to sound The Hipster Alert.

  • Kilo15

    What makes him a hipster?

  • masonio

Wow, Bojan giving stink eyes to Cordoba.

  • whill4

Borini should be the first player we offer a contract too when the summer transfer starts.

Such a talented player and overall pretty smart player.

  • Lucian

So far, Milan Lazio and Udinese loosing. Good news.

  • Lucian

     no... Milan drawing.

  • Okay, First time I see this kid, any info guys?

  • masonio

He is better than Tallo and probably Bojan.

  • haha, well 2 minutes will see if any of them prove themselves over the other..
