The Weekend Update
By: Chris | June 9th, 2007
For some unknown reason Roma have put everything else on hold to take care of the Christian Chivu situation. That includes signing Juan, because they released a statement saying no accord had been agreed to as of yet. Rumors are Rudi Voller and Daniele Prade have been getting buddy-buddy over the last few days, but why nothing has resulted really baffles me. It’s not as though Chivu is the only defender they will lose, they really need depth at the position after losing non-factors Gilberto Martinez and Rodrido Defendi (I would hope, if not I may be committed). I’m really not understanding the holdup unless Juan is seriously considering the Sevilla offer, but everything points to Roma as the ones who keep procrastinating.
As far as the Chivu negotiations go, there is some very good news. They told Inter that they want Pizarro’s half plus 20m euros. Now that’s the type of deal I’ve been looking for and would have no problem sending him to the lesser side of Milan for that kind of bank. I suppose that would value him at 24-26m which is a far cry from that Samuel, Pizarro + 5m piece of crap Inter had in mind. Barcelona have supposedly offered Sylvinho + 13m euros, but that’s not going to get it done either. Though it’s a much more respectable starting place than the crap Inter have been laying on the table. Which, in turn, made Inter think about tossing in that big chip Fabio Grosso. Come on. I love Fabio but he’s nothing more than a minor chip. Either way, an auction is beginning and we can just sit back and watch as Roma sell him to the highest bidder. Though they make no bones about the fact that they want that bidder to reside in La Liga.
I’m starting to warm up to the idea of Edmilson coming back as someone who would be hugely valuable in a 3-2-3-2 system that will hopefully sometimes be employed. If they’re to play that system they need a true DM next to De Rossi (and even though he is one of my favorite people I won’t deny that some of his decision making has been questionable this year both for Roma and the Azzurri and he could be helped by a true defensive mid who sits back), not a Pizzaro character who would play further up if not for his athletic shortcomings and isn’t a defensive stalwart. A guy like Edmilson, who can play defense also, would almost allow them to switch back to a full four back defense when needed, more of a 4-2-2-2 in certain situations. Yaya Toure would be ideal for this but those chances are slim. Edmilson + 18m would suit me nicely, though I’m not sure of his monetary value. He cost Barcelona 10m 3 years ago but I can’t really comment on his value today so I’m pulling numbers out of my ass.
a) Guess how much those two goals versus Lithuania were worth to Samporia? Just guess.
(Pause for effect….)
EIGHT MILLION EUROS.
That’s right, Fabio Quagliarella is now worth 24m euros according to Sampdoria, their half being worth 12m of course (trust me on this one). That sound in the background is Luciano Spalletti bawling into the bosom of Rosella Sensi. They probably could’ve actually dropped his price to about 12-14m before The Game sans players. Not now, time to make way for G14 and their big checkbooks. We hardly knew ye, Fab Quag’s. Farewell.
* - Though papers still are reporting the two teams the hottest and heaviest after Fab Quag’s are Roma and Juventus. Are Roma really ready to shell out that much bank for a guy they think can push them over the top? They did it with Gabriel Batistuta and won the Scudetto but it was a big reason they are in dire financial straits today. But moreover, is Fab Quag’s that guy to push them over the top? He’s good, no doubt, but is he a Batistuta character who can change the fortunes of a team? I don’t know. Today I’d have to lean towards no. But Fab always seems to prove me wrong (thankfully).
b) Speaking of G14, in case some people don’t know what it is, this should help. It’s essentially a conglomerate of the biggest (richest) and best (and richest) clubs in Europe, whose main goal is the betterment of the beautiful game, or: the inevitable formation of a Superleague which would bring in beaucoup bucks. All Champions League, all the time. The members are: Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, PSV, Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Marseille, PSG, Porto, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valenia, Juventus (they even allow in second division teams), AC Milan and Internazionale. For those scoring at home, yes, that’s 18 clubs; but it originated as 14 so the name stuck. The president is Inara’s beloved Jean-Michel Dickhead Aulas. Recently a few clubs have applied for admission: Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers, Red Star Belgrade and Galatasaray. I’m sure Abramovich will call up the dean Aulas and offer to donate a library some money to the cause to get his boys into the club. Funny, with the rich history of all those clubs, Chelsea would join with absolutely no history to their name other than the titles bought by Abramovich. Red Star Belgrade has at least won a Champions League title. Guess how big the smile on my face is right now. No really, guess.
Little chance of Roma joining, they can’t afford the pledge dues. Though with Michel Platini becoming UEFA prez there’s a chance they would try to join just to spite him. That and he’s going to ruin European soccer. But honestly, G14 is looking to double its membership by the end of the year according to Aulas and Roma is easily one of the 36 biggest clubs in Europe. Most people talk about Chelsea and Roma as the two clubs most deserving of a place at the big table and it’s hard to disagree (the club is in fricken Rome people, home of a former empire; how they have financial issues is way fucking beyond me, a Down Syndrome chimpanzee should be able to turn a profit in The Eternal City). So it really can’t be ruled out.
c) Time to break out the bubbly! Antonio Di Natale is likely headed to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Which means he won’t be joining Roma (that’s what $100K worth of schooling bought right there, that kind of deductive reasoning). The Lithuania game is evidence enough that he is not of “championship-calibre,” and supposedly that’s what Roma are looking these days. I hope Wolfsburg aren’t looking to go up against Bayern, Di Natale is a homeless man’s Luca Toni. Oh, it’s a good day.
d) Still no news on Mirko Vucinic or Marco Cassetti, both of whom are at least partly owned by Lecce. This likely has to do with the Serie B season still having to play tomorrow. Lecce are in 9th and have no chance of moving up so both players will spend next year somewhere other than Lecce. Cassetti is on a co-ownership deal and it would likely only require short change to make his move permanent. He’s a very good backup for the RB position and more than worthy of the million or so it will take to buy him out. Vucinic is another story. He didn’t exactly light up the league but he spent most of his time playing out of position on the wing, I still think he would be amazing in a 3-2-3-2 formation. The other interesting point is that, according to Lecce director Guido Angelozzi, Vucinic turned down a move to Milan last summer because Mirko “had no doubts, he loves Roma.” There’s no question he wants to be in Rome, and that’s exactly the mentality this team needs. He’s one of the best young strikers in Serie A, can we not move a couple things around every now and again to play to his strengths? In 5 years Vucinic and Okaka Chuka could be one of the most lethal duos in Europe.
e) A little update on the Shabani Nonda situation. After spending last year on loan with Blackburn Rovers in the EPL, it looks like he’ll be staying in the Prem with either the Rovers or Newcastle. David over at the Newcastle Offside has covered their angle of the saga well. The original loan deal was for 3m euros if the parties agreed, but hopefully Newcastle will be forced to put up more and spark a “bidding war” of Nonda-like proportions, meaning not very big. Either way, Nonda is gone and he’s going to cover Mexes’ contract next year. Works for me.
f) Roma have supposedly tabled a 4m euro offer for Juan Manuel Vargas of Catania, though I’m not sure of the validity of the report. The article also mentions Roma are one of three teams after him including Juventus and Liverpool. I’ll try to find out more but if that’s the sort of company going after him then I’m all for it.
g) Ahmed Barusso’s (the Michael Essien clone) agent has revealed Roma were very interested but it’s been a little while since they’ve heard from Roma. He hopes that his client’s status will be known within two weeks of the end of Rimini’s year, which concludes tomorrow. I’m really started getting worried that Chivugate is going to prevent Roma from signing any of the Grade A guys on their wishlists and they’re going to be stuck with the Zenden’s and Bellucchi’s.
h) I was looking up some quotes from Zlatan for my weekly quote section the other day and I came across this little sentence I forgot to throw in:
Ibrahimovic wanted to play for the Bosnian national soccer team in 2001 but was rejected by the FA.
Why? They said he would only play on the B squad because he wasn’t good enough for the A squad. Raise your hand if you can name a single player on the Bosnian national team. Me neither.* Anyway, quality scouting, Bosnia. How does an entire football association fuck that up?
* - What about Hasan Salihamsandwich who just signed for Juve? Does he still play for the BH national squad? Great, now I’m adding Bosnian websites. I need a translator who can cover all Eastern European languages just to get through my day.
This also needs mention. The goal is one of the best ever, but take a look at Rafael van der Vaart’s face in the box. Priceless. He looks like someone just ran over his dog. Anybody else think he wanted to be big man on campus at Ajax and Zlatan ruined it for him?
I’ll stop with the Zlatan stuff, I swear. It’s a problem.
i) I mentioned a little trivia question last week asking who the top scorer for the World Cup champs. The answer was a tie between Luca Toni and the surprise of the WC, Marco Materazzi. I was perusing the team stat sheets yesterday, guess how many Marco scored this year. Ten. Double Adriano’s total. I’m bracing for the apocalypse.
* Ruud van Nistelrooy is going up against Real Zaragoza, a very good team, tonight. The current standings are:
Totti: 26 goals
RvN: 23 goals
Forza Zaragoza!

::hearts Aulas:: He’s the best club president ever. Even if he is an ass.
To be honest, I’m not a big fan of G14, but I accept its existence as inevitable as long as football is a business. But I don’t see the point in expanding the group of clubs. Adding clubs like Rangers, Galatasaray, etc, won’t really do anything in terms of pressure and don’t have the money, resources, or power to add anything substantial to the existing group.
In fact, the G14 should be cleaned up. There are several clubs that no longer belong in the group (especially Leverkusen, Dortmund, and PSG). The whole point of the organization is that they are also the best (for example, CL finalists are almost always G14 members).
So I hope Aulas doesn’t make the number 40. I could live with 22 or 24.
And Chris, I know it must hurt seeing Serie B Juve in such an exclusive club (for now_ while squeaky clean Roma isn’t. But things will look up when the Sensi family pack up and leave.

I now heard from Corrieredellosport (i know…)
That Rudi Voeller, is expected in Roma on the 18th of June to discuss with Prade and Sensi. It also says that Voeller won’t be entertaining any other offers for Juan until after his meeting with the Roman management. But i think that the price of around 24M$ is a little over the top.Especially with only one year left on his contract. I know Chivu is an excellent, young, mobile defender but he’s a little injury prone if you ask me. In my book, he’s in no way worth 14-15M$ more than Juan. He’s great at free kicks but who cares when you have Totti and Pizarro in your team.
I don’t see who would refuse a Juan + 16M$ for Chivu deal.
I love Chivu and the fact that Roma got him ahead of Inter and Juventus( they settled for Legrottaglie )in 2003.
But his outrageous price tag is making me wonder if Roma would be stupid not to sell him and not take Juan, and have some money leftover for the Mercato.Posted from

I totally agree with everything you said about the G14, but the funny part about those clubs is Aulas maintains that their financial and football level has little to do with their consideration. He discussed the future of G14 as being based as much on geographical location as financial worth, if not more. Which makes me think clubs like FCK, Malmo, Olympiakos, CSKA Moscow and Rosenborg BK are next in line. None of whom will compete on a European stage anytime soon (maybe CSKA if they keep the talent around). So what their actual mission is still remains fuzzy to me. Why the geography? Unless it’s truly the formation of a Superleague and they want to corner every market. Oh, and it also makes me think Aulas is plotting to take over the world.
Marco, I couldn’t agree more regarding Chivu’s price, and I’m not basing it on what I think he’s worth. He’s made a lot of blunders this season and I’m not sure he’ll ever shine on the biggest stage, so I agree he isn’t worth 22m+. But the fact remains that Roma paid 21m for him a few years ago and he has improved since then. Due to this Roma wants to make out on their investment - as they’ve said. You can’t really blame them for asking that much.
I am fully on board with selling Chivu to the highest bidder and bringing in Juan. I’ve said before there is no where near a 10-15m drop in value between the two. Hopefully Voller will work up a nice working relationship with his old club. BL seems to be the pipeline for top Brazilian talent into Germany.
And if this Cicinho + 13m for Chivu deal is a real offer, I’ll fly to Rome to pack Chivu’s bags for him. I’d like a little more cash but I really feel Cicinho will thrive in Rome next year and the money will leave 5m or so left after Juan. Who would turn down Juan, Cicinho + 5m for Chivu? Anyone?
Squeak clean, Inara? You mean the club that literally stole Mexes from Auxerre and was banished from the market for a year? Or the club that gave Rolexes to referees for Christmas a few years ago?

van Nistelrooy just scored his second in the 89th minute. This is not looking good for Totti. He’s 1 behind with 1 game to go. What a run from Ruud.
Espanyol scored in the 90th to tie Barca. Real, Barca and Sevilla all drew. Looks like the great Chivu debate will have to wait.

Dear Chris,
I’ve been reading your reports for a few days now and i can’t deny the fact that i like what i read here and can’t help but congratulating you for the very good job you do in digging for all these transfer rumors ect…
But one tiny thing troubles me, which is the fact that i don’t understand why are you so much excited at the selling of Chivu. This guy is a great defender and he’s done pretty awesome things with Roma defense along with Mexes for the last couple of years. Moreover, just before reading this article of yours i read on Channel4.com that he rejected all transfer rumors about him and that he’d like to stay at Rome. Sooo why all the hatred??
Personally i love the guy and would love to see him stay with us instead of bringing Juan or whoever…Posted from

And btw i would turn down Juan, Cicinho + 5m for Chivu.
But that’s just me

Slim,
I don’t hate Chivu at all. I think he’s a very talented defender and I commend everything he’s done for Roma. My problem is that he seems to disappear during big games and doesn’t have that certain je ne sais quoi that other great defenders like Cannavaro and Nesta have. He is largely responsible for The Disaster at Old Trafford and has made numerous mental mistakes this year. I’m not against Chivu at all (though everything reported seems he’s after the biggest buck, many members of the squad said he won’t return their calls), but I don’t think a) he’s worth his trade value and b) he has shown anything to prove that he would be able to dominate a CL semi-final or final, and that is something Roma is aiming for. Whereas Mexes has proven his worth against the big teams. If he came back I’d be thrilled, provided he proves to everyone he wasn’t after the biggest buck and that it was a media fabrication. But if they can truly get 22m+ for him then that is much more valuable to Roma than Christian’s services, because Juan is not a massive drop in terms of ability (and only 1 year older). That and I think Fabrizio Grillo is going to come along really soon. Grillo will make everyone forget Chivu very very quickly, even if he’s still here. Though I’m still unsure of his contract situation, it was supposedly a complicated deal when he was loaned out in January.Posted from

Marco.. I couldn’t disagree with you more. First of all.. Chivu cost Roma 18 million three years ago. Since then he’s improved by leaps and bounds so must be valued more. Also, since that time players’ prices have sky rocketed. I mean.. Sergio Ramos cost Real Madrid 25 million! If a crap defender like Oddo cost Milan 12 million, how is one of the best defenders in the World only worth 16 million?
Second of all.. Pizarro can’t take a free kick on goal for the life of him. He’s good if he wants to knock it into the box but not like Chivu. Chivu I would say is more accurate than Totti.. He took maybe 3 free kicks this season and all were just a hair off.
Now.. Juan + 16 million? If we get 16 million for Chivu, Juan will cost 8 million at the least. So really it’s Juan + 8 million. Chivu is worth at least the amount we paid for him..

It was actually £15m, or about 22m euros. 4m isn’t a massive difference but it plays into the net impact of Chivu’s next move. If they lost money on Chivu after the improvement he’s shown it would be very imprudent.

I was actually referring to the Calciopoli, I had forgotten about Philou’s transfer shenanigans. That pissed off a lot of people at the FFF.
Love Aulas or hate him, but he would do oh so well at an Italian club. In fact, he’d fit right in. France is too straight edge for his ambitions.

I saw Chivu last night at the Figo Foundation benefit match — he was palling around with Ibra (A sign of impending Inter-ness?), who is about 4x his height, and failed to mention his Roma negotiations. Bastard.

Chivu and Zlatan were teammates at Ajax for three years, I wouldn’t read too much into that aspect. Or maybe they were talking about how they can both milk their clubs for all they’re worth.

just as an update, around January, Spalletti had stated what we would extend Martinez’ loan for a year. not sure who this buys time for but Martinez is primarily a RB, that can play CB/LB as he does for the NT. Spalletti must’ve saw something in him during the Germany-Costa Rica game (opening game of WC2006) since Wanchope was linked to us the following week (could be rumours, or could be Spalletti was watching). we still co-own Scurto at Chievo and he plays RB.
as for Pizarro and Cassetti, they’re inevitably joining Roma, even if they’re on co-ownership for now. Vucinic is on loan, and i dont see why we don’t get him. sure he’s not as fast as Suazo, but if we go Suazo, we would have to play him on the wing. since Suazo is so attack-minded, we would have to have him play in Mancini’s position.
also, i don’t like how everyone bashes Taddei. he is clearly underrated and a crucial part of Roma. as much as he goes forward, he provides cover when needed, much like Perrotta but with a slightly better touch. since Pizarro is a lazy sack at defensive duties and no where near the level of Pirlo, we need people from our trequartista line to play box-to-box cover
as for the sale of Chivu, i would advocate it to buy Juan and Mathieu (though i hoped that we would buy 50% of Molinaro from Siena so that Juventus pays us off and we snap Mathieu next year on a free, after he has a year of experience in Champions League) after his sale. you would have the original transfer budget to spend on 2 wingers and a DMF. with Roma, it’s hard to count out those free transfers, though contracts are an obvious issue.

Thanks for the update on Martinez, I’m not sure exactly what his injury problems were this year but after not playing a single game I don’t get why the extra year is needed. I knew that about Scurto but he had some injuries also I believe but had lost his starting place anyway.
Agree regarding Pizarro but if he really wants to stay in Rome then giving an ultimatum regarding his co-ownership was a selfish and unwarranted move. Knowing Roma’s financial situation, couldn’t he understand it would be best for them to leave him on a co-ownership deal for another year?
Completely agree regarding Taddei, he is an invaluable member to the squad and I would love to find a true DM who can distribute the ball from deep to replace Pizarro. Though Aquilani needs a permanent starting XI spot soon.

I just want to precise that Cicinho has Italian citizeship so he wouldn’t account for an ”extracommunitario spot”

Taddei and Mancini are tremendous on the wings, and Aquilani needs a spot or he will leave. Pizzaro to me is no more then a bench novelty, id say Aquilani, Perotta and De Rossi should all be involved, and they could share defensive responsibility, but you do have Jacques Faty who i rate highly for his defensive solidity, but maybe another DM is needed.
