The Curse of Toscana Looms Once Again
By: chris | October 4th, 2008
Siena v Roma
I’m doing my part and the non/mini-previews seem to be working, so I’ll keep ‘em coming.
Everybody remember the last time Roma traveled to Siena? Is there anyone who doesn’t? If so – lucky bastard.
It was worse than Cluj, Palermo & Refereegate at the Marassi all put together. It was a complete steamrolling by a vastly inferior team in a region which simply owns Roma for some inexplicable reason. Now it’s one more chance to exorcize The Curse of Toscana. Which is nice, because it’s not like this team needed one more psychological monkey clinging to their backs with a death grip right now. Not at all.
And in case you’re new around here, a little wrap up of last year’s Tuscan field trips:
• Fiorentina 2-2 when Matteo “I’m as good as Mexes & Juan – wait, no, I’m slightly below a dollop of turd” Ferrari (yes, still bitter) tackled a Bobo Vieri who needs 100,000 ancient Egyptians and seven years to move him from the top of the box to the goal line for the decisive penalty.
• Empoli 2-2 when Roma put it into autopilot from halftime on and Giovinco hit the luckiest ball of his life in stoppage time of the second half.
• Livorno 1-1 when the amaranti called in the entire Italian navy to sit in front of Amelia in the box for 90 and Roma’s Oompa Loompa Brigade (as much as I enjoy having some size to work with now, I miss the little fellers) resembled a 6th grade chess club in a rugby scrum – bodies flying every which way and absolutely nothing productive happenin’.
• Siena 3-0 when the Primavera would’ve had it 3-1. At least.
Will they shoot themselves in the foot once again? We shall see. I was feeling much more comfortable about this game before I found out it was in Siena, not Rome. Now? Not so much. Bordeaux was nice, but they still played 60 minutes like they’d sucked the region dry the night before and showed zero life at the start of either half (draw your own conclusions). Still plenty of work to do, even more to worry about.
Siena’s Five
Atalanta 1 – Siena 0
Siena 2 – Cagliari 0
Lecce 1 – Siena 1
Siena 0 – Sampdoria 0
Udinese 2 – Siena 1
What does this say? A clicking Roma should win – Siena is not very good. Whether or not they click is another matter entirely, and it has nothing to do with the personnel on the pitch.
And just realizing….only 4 conceded in 5 for the Roman between the sticks? I like very, very much.
The Romans
Gianluca Curci: Still The Great Roman Hope, and his Siena career has started out quite well. They lost Loria, have a less-than-imposing back line and may fight relegation, yet he’s had two clean sheets and conceded more than a single goal only once, to Udinese. This is the most promising news regarding him in years. Hopefully he’s been as good as his numbers indicate and the growth continues.
Ahmed Barusso: One game started, 90 minutes against Lecce. Doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who will walk into a new tactical system and start immediately, so I’m a lot more interested in what he does from Nov/Dec on. Doubt he’ll play much, if at all, Sunday.
Daniele Galloppa: No longer a piece of Roman property, but someone who would need no more than whispered sweet nothings to be on the next flight. More than any single game is his development over the next few years. All of Rome will be watching.
And it felt like they’re harboring many more, but that’s it.

It’s still very early in the season, the campionato is still there for the taking, however the Chelsea games should be concentrated on. I really think you guys need to take a more defensive approach, the 4-2-3-1 should be switched to Christmas tree formation, I know you’re an attacking football team but when the attack is fluid you guys get killed in the back, of course it doesn’t help being out of your two central defenders. I hope to god you pull maximum points out of Chelsea, yet it might be smarter to play for the draw, more conservative style of play.

What has Spalletti accomplished that I cant compare to Mr. Ballardini?

Ben it’s nice to see someone supportive.

Coppas are nothing to sneeze at, they’re not glorified like the FA Cup, but they’re still not easy to win.
Spalletti has petered out when the big ones come around though. It would have been nice not to blow countless leads against relegation teams or perhaps score a goal against Manchester.
At some level this ordeal must come down to money. Money that we don’t have.

Riise isn’t worse than Tonetto would be either, the back line is just ragged.

Ben do you remember the 1st half of the SuperCoppa? That was how Roma reacts to the Christmas tree formation, They have 0 width and 0 attacking fluidity. A 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-1-4-1 is the way to go. I think our success hinges on who Chelsea has in their arsenal or not. They are going through a lot of injuries right now, like us, but there situation is getting worse and ours is getting better when we face them, they very well may not have Drogba, Anelka, or Ashley Cole. And they definitely won’t have Essien. And Terry, Anelka, Cole, and Drogba are all carrying injuries if they do end up playing. We’ll see what happens. I’m nervous, and hopefully we hold our own against Inter & Chelsea, as well as the other teams we’re playing in that hellish sequence.

Looking at the Group A standings, I dont know if Roma can afford to play for a draw:
Chelsea 4
CFR Cluj 4
Roma 3
Bordeaux 0Assuming Cluj keep their current form then Roma will have to beat Chelsea at some point to advance. Might as well try to beat them now.

I forgot to mention Joe Cole as well*

The biggest problem is that nobody that actually works for Roma knows what’s wrong. Maybe we should send Belichick over there, he would figure it out in 5 seconds, but so would anyone.

I’d love if we could beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and end that streak of theirs.

Or I suppose Cluj could start loosing – that would really be helpful!

Belicheat, are you serious? If you want to taint Roma

Cluj have made a story out of our horrendous back line and bunkering in at their own place against chelsea. I love Roma, but we know that them coming out with a win when Roma has one of those days isn’t saying much. I’d be suprised if they came out with a point against Bordeaux.

The greatest coach of all time? Yeah, that coach responsible for 5 super bowls.
That video taping thing has been revealed as something that is widespread by people like Jimmy Johnson. Media just choses to ignore it.

Guys i bet chris is really frustrated now… Match previews we lose by 3, so he started the mini or non previews, but it seems as if we some how adapted to that too, and we managed a loss, at least it’s by one now, i wonder how will chris retaliate though. hmmm.

Kj- “Samson, youre just a lost cause”
Seems to me that your just at a lost for words.
Alessio- “and then promptly sold to Inter”
ouch that was harsh hahaha.I agree, Chelsea and Inter is gonna be tough. I think we are gonna lose to Chelsea away. I just cant see a banged up and unsettled Roma ending Chelsea’s 80 some game winning streak unless we can make a 360 in 2 weeks. It just looks to weird in the EPL history books. If it does happen, PAAARTY!

What has Spal done the Ballardini hasnt?
To call him a “master tactitian” because he beat a weak Roma and a weird Juventus doent make him a master.
For one, Spal has had more than just 3 or 4 good games under his belt. Thats one and I think its enough but I will entertain you:
Try having the highest unbeaten streak ever in Serie A.
Try having the ability to keep a job for more than 1 or 2 years
Try having an offer from Chelsea
Try having 14 years of experience under your belt and not 4. Spalletti 49 yrs old, Ballardini 44yrs old by the way
Insult the Coppa Italia all you want but Spal has won it with more than just one team.
Jeez, its like comparing Mcd’s to a well marinated steak.
Try being the coach of the first Italian team to have beaten Spanish super giants Real Madrid at the bernabeu.
