SuperCoppa: One More Time Against….

By: chris | August 23rd, 2008

Internazionale FC +1 v Roma

It’s been a long and tumultuous few months without out fair Giallorossi, but the time has come for what it’s all about: the football.

Without going into too much detail, last season was pretty much a sham. The boys proved their point in the Coppa Italia final – sans Francesco, of course, so imagine what it would’ve been like with him – but watching the men in black essentially gift a scudetto to Milan still stung quite a bit. So more than winning the SuperCoppa, this game will be a launching pad into a Serie A season where they, and I suppose everyone else, will prove that last year was a bunch of bullshit. But a win would do quite nicely in reaffirming matters.

As far as the present and near future go, this game is so unique because we have really no idea how things will play out. Last year we knew that Roberto Mancini’s tactics would be rubbish and that if Roma could just break through the team bus-cum-Zlatan, it was in the bag. Now we await the debut of The Mediocre One who will probably…..employ a team bus which hoofs long balls up to Drogba Zlatan. (A master of deceit, that Jose.) So more of the same, I guess, but we’ll just have to wait and see what yawner they unleash.

For Roma, the uncertainties will be relatively abundant. The best player and captain will be sitting on the bench – effectively changing tactics, gameplan, droolfactor, etc. – with his spot will be taken by the summer’s biggest signing who has been in Rome for less than a week and yet to even play in a scrimmage of a friendly. And in this system so reliant upon wingers, they’ve got like one worthy true winger making the trip up north. The rest are either makeshift duct tape editions or in the process of being deemed surpluses of shittiness. Safe to say the way this lineup looks and plays will probably be nothing close to how we’ll see it in even the second week of September. This is, in effect, a time to throw the spaghetti against the wall and see how much sticks.

But more than matters on the pitch, this has been a very difficult week off. Francesco may be the face of the organization to the public, but to the players it was Franco Sensi. He signed many of them, and for those that grew up with the club – Totti, De Rossi, Aquilani, Okaka, etc. – he was anything but a boss. This is a family and he was the patriarch, a man above his position. No doubt they’ll play with twelve, but the physically present eleven will be doing so with very heavy hearts.

And then there was tragedy suffered in Daniele De Rossi’s extended family. How on earth he was able to attend two funerals in one week and play a game for his country mere hours after the second – and play exceptionally well at that – I struggle to comprehend. Yes, it’s what Franco would have wanted, but there are extenuating circumstances and then there are weeks of pure tragedy which would be enough to dash anyone’s spirit. The moment he steps into the stadium will be enough for me, regardless of how he performs. Actually, I think the same goes for the rest of the team, considering how close many in this group are. Under other circumstances things would be different, but it will just be great to see them play regardless of the outcome.

That said…..Roma is the better team. You can’t judge quality on money spent, you can only judge it on play, and over the last two years this team under Spalletti has done nothing but grow and improve. Expect more of the same.

Totti:

If this quote is any indication….

“It’s positive that the lad is so eager to get back on the field, but in my view right now he is unable to truly contribute to the team.”

….we won’t be seeing him. Undoubtedly disappointing, but a move which may prove to be smartest in the end. There is no use risking Totti’s entire season for one game. He is, quite obviously, too important. So if he plays, wonderful; if he doesn’t….more sleepless nights of anticipation.

Mancini:

I think I’ve grown fonder of Mancini since he moved to Inter – mostly because I don’t have to worry about him sucking ass for Roma two out of every three Sundays and he’s nothing like Chivu – and this only helps:

“I have respect for Roma, so I really doubt I would celebrate if I scored.”

I think he’s got a good heart and his intentions in the right place, I just think he’s a complete flake who could use some counseling and heavy psychotropics. So I wish him well. In training.

Cicinho:

Never a dull day in Romaland, is it. It appears Spal handed out the first team jerseys for the SuperCoppa on Friday and upon Cicinho finding his hands empty, he threw a little hissy fit. So he’ll be watching the game from home in what can be considered nothing else but a “timeout”. Oh good. Let’s start the year off with preschool punishments.

Question: What is it with Spal and right backs? He obviously loves them, can’t seem to get enough, but he loves pissing them off. Or maybe he pisses them off because he can’t seem to get enough of them. Makes sense.

And frankly, if I’m Cicinho, I’m shutting my yapper because the other two potential RBs (I haven’t the slightest what lineup will be launched, but I suspect it might be both) have been playing against Mancini in training for at least the last two years – Grumpy Old Man River since he arrived. So they were privy to his tendencies and weaknesses in training before the year he sucked ass, which is when Cicinho arrived. Plus they’re both, if only slightly in the case of Mark Cass, a bit more defensively inclined. Just think a bit.

This isn’t really worrying. The only worry is that it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure these things out. Appears Roma can’t rid itself of emotional and irrational Brazilians. Wonderful.

Convocati

Roma:

ANDREOLLI, AQUILANI, ARTUR, BAPTISTA, BRIGHI, CASSETTI, DE ROSSI, DONI, ESPOSITO, JUAN, LORIA, MEXES, MONTELLA, OKAKA, PANUCCI, PERROTTA, PIPOLO, PIZARRO, RIISE, TONETTO, TOTTI, VUCINIC.

Inter:

A bunch of South Americans and Zlatan.

Key Injuries

Good Guys.:

Totti: Been there done that.

Taddei: Thigh matter, I believe, which rules him out. Not a good start after picking up a few niggling injuries last year.

Doni: He’s in the squad, so…..

Inter.:

Chivu: HA! He’s out. (Duh.)

Zlatan: He’s been hurt and it appears he’s roughly in the same boat as Francesco. Which is very, very, very good news.

Projected Lineup

Anybody have a coin?

Doni;
Panucci, Juan, Mexes, Tonetto;
DDR, Pizarro;
Cassetti, Perrotta, Vucigol;
Beast.

I don’t even know if it’s worth guessing at this point. We’ll just see shortly before the game. I’d be very surprised to see Aquilani or Pizarro on the bench, but I’d be just as shocked to see KA on the wing (and lord knows Pizaman can’t play anywhere but next to DDR). Big ol’ shrug of the shoulders.

Key Matchups

Roma v Inter’s Back Four:
Please tell me, kind people, what combination of four callups you fear most in a standard back line:

4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Maxwell, 13 Maicon, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 24 Nelson Rivas.

You might as well put Beppe Grillo and Mr. Magoo in central defense.

(Speaking of Beppe, did he ever tackle last year’s scudetto?)

Doni v Julio Cesar:
So….if Doni starts and hurts himself again, we could see three Brazilian keepers this game. Kill me now.

The Grand Imperial Poobah v The Mediocre One:
Not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m of the impression Jose Mourinho is the single most overrated coach in the world – and I’m far from alone. Given a world beating team and a bottomless bank account, he couldn’t do in Europe what Avram F@#$ing Grant did in like six months (also see Porto’s opponents in that Champions League run). In fact, were it not for Mourinho last year, Chelsea probably would’ve won the EPL. His players love him, yes, but his tactics are shit (went with the running theme at Inter, I see) and his only true answer was pray his big money signings could get it done for him.

And then there’s Spalletti. No need to say anything more there.

This game is not a time for direct comparison given the circumstances and the fact that Roma’s mercato is far from over, but this one should be interesting nonetheless.

Totti v Zlatan:
Both may play. Or both may spend the entire duration in warmups. But these two will be the two most impacting players within the San Siro tomorrow evening. Logic says both will start on the bench, and if one or both comes on, they can completely turn the game on its head.

Last Game

Oh yes.

Predictions

Come on.

Score:
2-1 Roma
Goals: Mexes (22), Saccani (34), Vucinic (57)
MOTM: Presidente.
Mancini “Give-A-Shit” Factor: For old time’s sake….4.5.

    1. Riise sucked

    2. Juan was overloaded but handled it pretty well

    3. Mexes was great in moments but inconsistent and created a couple of errors

    4. Cassetti was really solid

    5. Cici should have played; he really brings such an important dimension to the team

    6. Pizza’ is too fucking slow on the ball, even if his passing was more solid than most

    7. DDR -was truly awesome throughout; the best passes, great control, pushing the ball up the field, the long range shots

    8. the problem is not the 4-3-2-1 as much as Aqui was played out of possition – he should be in the centre, and Perrotta was played out of position – he is a midfielder and definitely not a winger and everyone knows he can’t score so why push him up to the wing?

    9. Vuci was too slow on the ball and was not getting fed good balls

    10. Baptista was blocked up by Mourinho’s very successful wall. whenever we had the ball near the box, there were about 8 Inter players gathered around in a campfire circle like they were going to sing fucking kumbaya or something. THIS IS WHY WE NEED A WINGER.

with all the long range firepower, Spaletti should have had the boys take a bunch of far shots to draw inter out of the box area and then create more space. with Baps, De Rossi and even Pizz’, they might have even scored off the long shots.

    11. Oka-Chuka needs a new coiff. the buffont was out in the 60’s

all that being said, though, we played with balls. not that well, but with balls. passing was sloppy and we lost lots of possession, but even with all that, that cock-smoking Portuguese retard and his team of circus super-stars couldn’t win. VAFANCULO INTER!

i have to credit only Balotelli. he was fucking amazing and i don’t care how arrogant he is. he is one of the few to have the right (plus i love that he treats C-Ron as the fluffer that he is).

(Maicon and Muntari did look pretty strong though)

if we get a good winger (alla Menez, or even Castillo – no Suazo or Malouda) i will first spooge my pants and than start planning a field trip to the Olympico to see the boys do their thing.

anybody else interested in a field trip?

yeah, didn’t know a thing about Riise before but wondered why we spent anything on him, especially when our front line was in more need of help after dropping Man-Giuly.

It seemed that a lot was asked of Riise and hence he was lost , i am not going to call the shots on him so soon.
Goign to give him 5-8 games and then say soemthing abt him. But i would like to see Old legs to start on the left against napoli. Tonetto has to start.

I dnt know whats all this fuss about riise and baptista. For his very first game baptista did quite well and remember he was moved in and out of positions constantly, and as for riise he did a few defensive errors but i dnt tink tonetto would hav done much better defensively. The main problem are the wings because we played central midfielders as wingers perrotta, aqui and baptista. we need menez!!

I don’t think Riise sucked.. He had to cover the entire left wing.. Whenever we had possession he would push forward and then some guy in the middle would lose possession and he would have to rush back.. It was his cross that was knocked into DDR’s path for the goal. He was always on the right side of the attacker (between him and the goal)..

I didn’t think Riise’s performance was all that bad as well…although his hair and skin complexion certainly takes a while to get used to in Serie A. And considering Baptista has only been with the team for about a week, with his preparation interupted by the team funeral, his performance was also good. He added an threatening element on the corner of the box in the 2nd half. If a true winger (Menez) is added before the end of the month, he will be all the more effective.

    Inter merda SEMPRE.

MAD. Loves to hate on the trolls but he takes troll life form when Inter plays Roma.

Il Capitano is still not ready. But it was gutty to have him try and end it. He is our Captain. Always.

We are ready. Get Menez or Castillo and maybe Suazo and lets get this shit on.

CE SOLO ROMA SEMPRE. ODIO INTER MERDA CON TE!

good game though…i thought the beast and riise were really good for their first game…n i dont pizzaro n aquilani can be played together…KA just doesnt find the spaces and positions he would like to be on…i maintain my opinion on perotta..sure hes workhorse which every manager wants in his team but in games like these you need class and he unfortunately just isnt…

When I looked at that lineup I said, we need to do more in the transfer market, but we still managed to compete. We need to be winning, not competing. We have been waffling all summer, and if we can sign Menez at least it will be a successful market. Menez is saying ‘come get me big boy’ to roma, get it done.

The trophy is not totally pointless because if Inter wins two other trophies Inter fans will talk their treble. It’s a nice way to kick off the season, and managers and owners get hypnotized by the shiny trophy. It’s the last preseason game, and that is what makes it good, the important ones are on the horizon.

i really didn’t think Riise was all that bad. The back 4 was really compact in the first half (watch the highlights and you’ll see) and the wing-backs in Cassetti and Riise didn’t spread out to cover as much ground as they should have. Maicon was given free reign on that side of the field, and that’s the only reason the whack first goal even occurred. I also think that this is the left side of the defensive midfield’s fault as well (Aqui, maybe? don’t remember) as they didn’t come back to help out on the left. That being said, I thought Riise played well in his time in the 2nd half and closed down well.

Baptista really showed me something in the 2nd half. I was scared that he would be too slow and big and not have enough of the passing skill, cutting, and moving that is Roma football, but when he actually started getting the ball in the 2nd half, he preformed really well, at least in my humble opinion. He coulda scored a few times but his efforts were a little weak.

Totti is not ready, he will be in a few weeks though.

D.D.R. was an absolute monster. Whatta performance. Just when I think I can’t fall in love with him anymore, I do. He either scored or created both goals today. He had the delightful screamer and then the nod back to Vucinic for the 2nd goal. Wow. I really don’t know why he doesn’t get more credit in the world sphere. He defends like Cannavaro, he links up play like Pirlo, and he can rip it with the best of them … I don’t think I can say anymore without splooging myself no homo.

Aquilani was largely anonymous, but as was eluded earlier, that has a lot to do with him being played out of position.

I thought Pizarro did quite well out there. I was afraid he was going to miss the PK in the shootout because it seemed as if he had a pretty painful injury.

Doni is not a good PK-defending goalie.

Just a few more observations/questions that some of you may be able to answer:
-Why doesn’t Totti ever receive the Captain’s Armband when he subs into the games? That being said, it only has been the last 2 games that he has. Whenever Giggs subbed in last year for Man U, Ferdinand would hand the Armband over to him. Just a random question…
-Why didn’t Aquilani take a PK? I would DEFINITELY rather have KA take one over Juan. Doesn’t make sense to me. Especially since Julio Cesar knows Juan’s tendencies at the PK spot since they play on Brazil’s national team together. Also, Aqui is an adept PK & FK taker. The one last year against Catania was nice.

Just a few of my observations. Hopefully we play like we did in the 2nd half come next Sunday.

asem.. Alberto was taken out of the game. And Doni had some penalty saving heroics in the semifinal of the Copa America where he saved 2 against Uruguay. That took Brazil to the final. But today he was scared and easily fooled by some easy ones.. I mean.. Cambiasso’s effort was probably the worst penalty of them but still got past him.

I am exited about this new Roma!

we are adding class players that we couldn’t last years and are starting to build a real competitive team, Baptista is going to be a real option up front and I am confident he is going to be an amazing signing. Riise is a step up on Tonetto and we are going to need his experience, once he gets his confidence back I am sure he is going to start to shine.

If we get a winger then we are going to be able to choose from several formations and that makes me happy, finally spalletti has the depth to be able to choose different formations.

I just hope we can get Perrotta to start scoring again, he gets into so many scoring positions, he just needs to find a good run and get his confidence back because I consider him an essential part of our team and I hope he can find his groove

i have to say i am pretty excited about the team as well.

i am assuming that we are going to get a winger and then Aqui, Perrotta and Pizza’ can be played in proper positions. this will also create a better structure to serve Baptista, who i think will be good once he can get more space and more through balls.

i remain unconvinced by Riise but i agree that he needs to be given a chance. he made a number of critical errors that we were lucky did not result in more goals for Inter and he lost possession a lot (i know others did as well but he was the only defender who did and that’s dangerous). Tonnetto was better.

We really need Cici back in the line-up.

we need to be honest though … that last goal against Inter was pretty lucky.

i don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but many of the youtube clips showing the fantasy goals that we all love are scored against a ball wall of 3, not 4.

even though Inter’s defenders are not the greatest back line, they worked very effectively in Mourinho’s strategy to jam up our offense. this is why we need:

    1. a good winger to open up the flanks and to allow Spaletti to field the mid-fielders in their proper positions so they can play where they are supposed to and thus more effectively

    2. Cici in the back line to provide extra depth behind the attack

    3. more long shots to keep the oposition’s mid-field out of the box. we have great long range shooters – Totti, DDR, Baptista, Aquilani, Pizza’ and even Cici

    use the full arsenal!

All I will say here is don’t come down so hard right away.

First match back of the season, new faces that haven’t adapted, some changes in tactics and Totti coming off of injury. We didn’t play our best but you can hardly fault the squad.
