Summer Mercato: The Final Days
By: chris | August 24th, 2008
• Not sure if you’ve heard, but the French phenom is in transit to Rome as we speak and he’ll have his medical and sign his deal tomorrow.
Oh it’s a good day.
8.26: Tuesday.
• Latest on Menez: There’s been a €13m offer laid down by Roma and Monaco can still be had for €15m.
- And ASM Foot seems to be the first to break news, for what it’s worth. (And yes, this one’s sourced from Gazzetta, but still.)
• According to La Roma siamo noi, David Suazo will join Roma within the next 24 hours via outright purchase, not a loan.
Tell you what, if this comes true, I’ll start buying their stuff. Unfortunately, they are horrendously wrong most of the time and I just can’t believe it.
(You know what that means……start printing the kits.)
8.25: Monday.
• According to Menez’s agent, the suits put in a call to Monaco today but no formal offer was made. Of course, they probably discussed numbers but it just means nothing was hashed out, and as much was to be expected. Progress.
Also, Mssr. Menez really, really, really wants to play for Roma, he said.
• Real Betis makes it official: Nery Castillo will sign upon a medical tomorrow.
Party time. Who brought the cake?
• French press is now reporting the suits and Jeremy Menez have come to an agreement, but that means little in this case because the big stumbling block is how much Monaco wants for him. And rumor is it’s a lot.
However, with the fact that Castillo was known to be holding out for Roma but is now headed to Real Betis……feel free to put two and two together. There’s a chance, a solid chance, this means they’ve either made a decision to pull a Mutu and go after someone with complete disregard for women and children or have a deal in place with someone.
• Lukas Podolski is grumpy again:
Podolski hasn’t said anything publicly, but his demeanour during and after the Dortmund game gave a few indications of his mood. After the game he ignored journalists and sped into changing rooms and was the first player changed and back on the Bayern team bus.
“Every player who doesn’t play is going to be disappointed” explained Bastian Schweinsteiger. “I can well imagine that he is annoyed.”
So feel free to throw that one back into the microwave.
• The big news regarding Mssr. Menez today is that his agent would like Roma to stop calling him and start talking to Monaco’s management. Which, you know, would probably be a good idea.
Or maybe they have and he’s not privy to this information. Either way, get on it, suits.
• According to The Mexican Unibrow’s agent, his client will soon be a Real Betis player. Hallelujah!
• I’m not even going to mention this Ferreira Pinto crap.
• To combat yesterday’s Menez rumors that he’d played his last game in France, the French press appears to have run with the story that Monaco will not be allowing him to leave for less than €25m. However, I saw this story two days ago coming from a fan site and nowhere else. Two days later, poof, in comes the news from a slew of outfits I don’t have on my list of trusted French media outfits, saying suddenly his price has magically and inexplicably doubled from every other report we’ve heard this summer; including those involving Inter and their €10m offers which were supposedly €5m or so short. Which would be similar to me stating right this minute that Cicinho can be had for €20m. It might take off, but there’s absolutely no truth to the statement whatsoever (even if that’d be some sweet turnover which could be used nicely over the next week……so, uh, any takers?).
Perplexing and cause for slight concern, but not time to hit the panic button just yet for the abundance of Menez groupies in the crowd.
Since it’s the last week of the summer mercato and the flotsam and jetsam will come flying in fast and furiously, so it’d be best to just keep a running thread/post up at the top of the page to rapidly post the rumors and horse manure as it arrives for the rest of the week. Should make things simple and easy to translate. (SuperCoppa thoughts at some point tomm below this post.)
The needs? Well, if you missed the SuperCoppa, to sum it up in one word: width. Yes, Taddei needs to come back, but he and Vuci can’t get it done all by their lonesome; nor does it appear Espo has changed TGIP’s mind since the end of last season. Okaka looked much better than anticipated, but as a winger for Roma? Hard to see. So basically, it’s all about width. Send in the winger(s). And no, little clue how many additions they hope to make, but if today was any indication, it’ll be two.
8.24: Sunday
• Big news of the day involved The Mexican Unibrow and his band of merry agents. The duo which handles Nery’s matters within the peninsula received a phone call from Daniele Prade yesterday and they’ll be rendezvousing this week to discuss the deal. He is, undoubtedly, the easiest of the potential additions right now. He wants Roma, his club – a club which doesn’t want him – would love to loan him out for a small fee and hope to drive up his eventual pricetag, and his wages are more than manageable. The question becomes whether Roma decides he’s a guy they want. We shall see, but I think the consensus amongst the tifosi is everyone wants Menez. And damn well we should.
Oh, and an unnamed club from Italy has made an offer for him per his band of merry agents. Personally I think it’s bullshit to get Roma moving, but if not, Castillo sounds like a guy who is tailormade for……Lazio.
Yeah, I said it.
• Perusing some French news this morning and two different sites (considering they were French, I couldn’t be bothered to search for them again) claimed that Jeremy Menez had played his last game for Monaco yesterday evening (played 87 minutes worth). The fact that Roma suits were in the stands probably helped contribute to this theory also. Read into it however you’d like, but I’ve come to the conclusion over the past year that the French media is among the most reliable in Europe.
• The Robinho saga won’t end, with Real saying he’s free to go, but he’s got to pay his buyout clause or something like that. Malouda may become surplus to requirements, but I strongly doubt the hierarchy will want to wait and see how this develops.
• When David Suayze was a “matter of hours”, they said the result of those hours would likely only be known once the SuperCoppa was done and dusted. Well it’s over, so start the Suazo-to-Roma watch…
Now.

Grosso was as much of a Palermo player in WC 06 as Schevchenko was an AC Milan player in WC 06.

My notions on Napoli were not based on the 8-0 aggregate scoreline they just had (reading back through some comments). It would be naive and ignorant to think Napoli is going to be a push over club and an easy 3 points. Needless to say… and you can get angry with me all you want or call me whatever you want… I hope Napoli makes an example out Roma in round 1. It is a match in which 3 outcomes are very possible (As is Inter’s match with Samp). If you don’t think so, then don’t worry. I am not here to try and convince you otherwise.

Gigi Buffon, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, and to a lesser extent, ADP, Camoranesi, and let’s not forget Trezeguet. Boom! Game over.

Asem,
sorry for the delay … re: Cici, i wasn’t referring to you in any way. i agree with you that Cici provides extra power on the side from the back (i think i said that somewhere in the paragraph)
Chico and Dhaw (with all my respect to their other opinions) as well as several others have been saying this in their ideal line-ups.
am i missing something?

i don’t really know why you guys let other fans get to you.
i mean, i like Palermo alright, but if any Palermo fans think they are better than Roma on the field, then the truth will be told there on the pitch for all of us to see. the only real difference is which fans are going to feel more comfortable waiting until that truth is revealed.

anyone interested in seeing the Roma Napoli game, are you aware of footie-doctor?

Napoli is gong to be one of the more difficult games of the first half of the season … just about level of preparedness.
once we can integrate the new guys and we can start fielding players in their proper positions Roma is going to have serious game.
i predict Spaletti is goig to throw Menez out there. is he any less risk than Monti or Espo at this point?
he has been playing, yes, in france as it may be, but he has done some time on the pitch this year.

I just checked and the FSW (Canada) schedule has Roma-Napoli, while FSC has the Milan game on Sunday. They usually confirm what they are showing on the Friday report show. (so I never believe it until I see it on the show)

Milan are looking really tough to beat – with Pirlo and the addition of Flamini they are solid in midfield, Senderos will be great for them in the back, and their front line is absurdly impressive. they will kill at the UEFA cup for sure. and now that Berluscumi is gone, suddenly they are not as odious (though it is still hard to like them).

pirlo is my fav Milan midfielder, but he looks almost as tired as he was looking last season. worry for the azurri too. flamini is a fantastic signing, have to admit.

Milan would be much better than last season, that’s for sure. They’ve made some very good signings, plus they’ll also only compete in uefa cup.

Our squad is brilliant this year star players compitition for places, lots of back up for injuries, and a variety of different type of players, I think the likes of Brighi and Okaka can make important contributions, imagine we even have the likes of esposito and montella as reserves. IM more Confident than i ever have been before that we can win the scudetto, or even The champions league
