Stuffs as The Jesus Returns
By: chris | July 7th, 2008
That’s some artist named Wangechi Mutu whose work keeps showing up with googles of “Mutu”. The only way to possibly describe her style is “anime meets med school meets I just lost my lunch”. So yeah, enjoy that.
Moo Moo
Still nothing definitive. But neither are the sound bytes, which I find definitively undefinitive…if that makes sense. We can make a parallel between two players: Alberto Aquilani and Moo Moo. Blasphemous, I know, but hear me out. We can easily say Mutu is more important to the current Viola team than Alberto is to the current Roma team, even though Alberto is more important to the future of Roma than Mutu is to the future of la viola for a host of reasons. Now we both know neither team wants to sell, despite the obvious interest from Roma for Adrian and Juve’s lust for all things Aquilani. When anyone affiliated with Roma is asked about the situation with King Alberto, they throw the gavel down with a definitive “no, never”. However, whenever the Mutu situation is brought up, it’s often a “we hope” or “we think” from the purple people eaters. Moo Moo’s scuumbaag of an agent, Luciano Moggi’s spawn Alessandro, has said he’ll definitely remain, but when can you ever trust an agent, much less one named Moggi? Exactly. Fact is, Mutu has the greatest say here and he hasn’t said anything as of yet.
So what does that mean? Nothing, but it does seem to leave a bit of wiggle room for those who like to overanalyze these sort of things. Namely myself.
Roman Pavlyuchenko
Is this rumor even worth discussing? Spartak wants an assload more money than he’s worth and Russian clubs aren’t financially strapped. Not to mention he’s simply riding the coattails of a solid continental tournament after criticism regarding his weight.
HUGE money (15m+?) for an unproven import? Not for Roma’s taste. Totti’s status, as optimistic as everyone may be, including the deity himself, is still a question going in to the start of the 38 week campaign. A campaign that can’t afford “eh, we’ll just hope he first month goes well” with a top buy who has never played Western European football. Part of what makes Mr. Moo Moo so alluring is his tried and tested Serie A resume. Ready from Day 1. Roman is, as lovely as his name may be, far from that.
Maybe, just maybe, if Pavlyuchenko were the “second buy” we could keep an eye on this, but not now, not at his price. Like Dmitri Sychev awhile back, file this one under “we hardly knew ye”.
But I can’t leave him without putting forth this youtube, from a dedicated fan. A dedicated fan with “restraining order” written all over him/her/it.
And now you can start printing Pavlyuchenko Kappa kits.
Thiago. One of them, at least.
Thiago Neves reminds me of a boy band star who ignited his career on the Disney Channel while the rest of the world sits at home thinking “Nice try, dude’s at least 37″. I can’t properly explain it, perhaps it’s because he looks like a hardened thug from a mob movie, but when I see “23″ on his wiki page, I’m thinking “bullshit”. Some features appear to indicate his supposed age, but I can’t put it all together. So for these purposes we’ll assume he’s 23…ish. At least until his real passport emerges from the Brazilian jungles.
The number of attacking phenoms currently slicing defenses and adding millions to their transfer fees in cone drills is hovering somewhere around ∞, give or take. In fact, if you’re to take one, the bowels of the jungles will magically burp up another 14 year old phenom ready for Arsene Wenger and Pantaleo Corvino to slapfight over – obviously given the size differential Arsene is at a clear disadvantage, so rules require Pantaleo a handicap of one hand enveloping a ham sandwich he must devour. Perhaps a take-your-number deli ticket system would work in Brazil? “#23? Yeah, here’s your quarter pound of Kerlon….#37? You get Alex Teixeira.” Something like that.
Anywho, this Thiago Neves appears to be good and a bit more ripe than the typical acne riddled, soprano singin’ sixteen year olds being scouted down in Brazil. As many eye rolls are given to highlight reels on the continent, feel free to multiply that three fold for those in South America. Not to diss the state of the game down there, but there’s a reason the top talent goes transatlantic sooner, rather than later. Plus, great defense isn’t exactly a staple of domestic football in Brazil – and that’s being Sunday school teacher kind.
But Arsenal wants him. And so didn’t Milan. And Manchester United. And usually, that’s enough. Here? Absolutely. Three great scouting systems with sizable transfer kittens at their disposal.
In all honesty, having watched just video, he looks like plan B to Mutu’s plan A. A creative midfielder with vision and passing who can finish all across the trequartista line. It’s impossible to say they’re similar players with similar tendencies, but the given skill sets do appear alike, and perhaps that’s why he’s being “tracked” right now, while the flavor of the month is Mr. Moo Moo. If the negotiations for Mutu fall through, then perhaps Thiago’s the drunken bridesmaid at the ready – and an ugly one at that.
As with every transfer rumor, the smart money says the next step won’t be made until Mutu makes a decision on the color of his kit next year. So that’s why the ever-reliable offerings of the Italian presses have been vague and infrequent – because Roma’s interest is probably both of those things.
Warning: Questionable Brazilian dancing ahead.
News Chunks
I) After being the object of lust for Blackburn, Celtic, [insert English team here], etc. and Matteo returning the favor with a lingering pat on the ass, Signor Brighi is now close to an extension. I swear, this cat’s middle name is Uncertainty.
II) Celtic, among others, would love them some iTunes. Quite obvious he’s going to be let out for a walk, hopefully on a short leash, only question is where. If he’s sold because he was a Conti buy, not a Spalletti purchase, I shall wish him well and will sleep soundly. If he’s loaned, I shall wish him ass loads of playing time.
III) Toto DiNatoto’s agent has quashed any rumored move to the Eternal City. Oh me. Oh my. Woo.
Can you feel my indifference?
IV) The suits are tracking Javier Saviola once again after he snubbed Roma in order to swap shirts in the El Clasico for, uh, more playing time. Yeah, playing time.
Real’s Argentinian bench ornament would seemingly be receptive to a move the fuck out of Madrid after this last season, and that puts a whole host of teams on alert. Other teams taking a peek are Juve, Napoli (shocker), Fiorentina and, you guessed it, Wolfsburg. Rumors price is 5m. Doable, definitely. He’d be like buying Giuly but younger, taller (no, I’m not kidding), and like 37 times better at the same price.
Topically it’s nice, but plenty more for consideration. Namely that whole height thing. Can we get a goddamn six footer in here? (Now taking applications.)
V) And now the best news of the day, a certain someone was spotted at Trigoria today:

Does it really mean anything when journeyman defender Loria celebrates in the Curva sud ? He does score some ridiculous goals for a defender though.

#1- Bash, yeah any trophy is going to inspire joy, but considering most squads play their reserves in the Coppa Italia, it’s almost like it’s more of a burden than a pleasure. Plus, it may be allaying the anger of Roma fans. If it didn’t exist, would you be happy with the last few years? And the SuperCoppa is nothing more than a glorified derby.
#2- Just a view from an outsider here. Roma is never going to be a great squad unless they ditch the Sensis, or the Sensis fix their finances. Between the salary cap, the low amount available for the transfers, Roma is building a B-squad with an A-coach. Juventus may have overachieved last year but so did Roma. It is unrealistic to ask all your players to earn significantly less than they could at other clubs, even for the love of the team. Mancini will never be a De Rossi, but that doesn’t make him a mercenary. Part of it is salary shows how you’re valued, and Mancini sees it seems Roma does not think he’s a particularly critical team player.
#3- Going along with above thought, Roma tifosi have to calm down about every player being a psycho Roma fan. Youth team mixture is great, but you’re going to need some other players to complete the puzzle. It’s illogical to hope that someone from a foreign country like Chivu grew up as a Lupi fan. Because of that, they aren’t going to be as willing to sacrifice salary for the squad, it’s a fact, not an opinion. And it’s not particularly wrong. If any of you were signed by say, Milan or Barca, would you take a huge paycut to stay? Probably not, even if you enjoyed playing for them.

Two cases for you- Our coach, Claudio Ranieri, is an avowed Roma fan. He grew up in Rome, supported them, his favorite players were Romanistas. That doesn’t mean he’s less of a bianconero.
Or Pavel Nedved. There’s no way in hell he grew up a Juventus fan. Had we significantly underpaid him a few years ago, (or Lazio rather, during his prime) I’m not sure he would have stayed, yet he’s a Juventus hero.
Money isn’t everything, but it does more than fill your bank accounts. It shows what the club feels about you.

I didn’t know much about them Bashar, but I remember hearing about how nobody wanted anything to do with the Sensis because it was the early 90s when they bought. My entire family (excluding my brother) follows them and everyone hated the Sensis.

I was almost blessed with the oppurtunity to test that theory, Alessio, but you’re right. Roma wants to pay you 2.5 mila, Inter wants to pay you 5. You don’t have to be scum to take that, in fact most aren’t.

It’s not like Totti had to make a decision between 2 mila and 6.5 mila either. He didn’t have to be a saint to stay because Roma was going to fork over a whole lot of arcade coins for him.

Exactly. Another point regarding the salary cap is even if say Chivu was dedicated to Roma, others might not be. He might figure the salary cap is going to dissuade key players (who are also non-diehard-romanistas) that would win them silverware, so why stay.

I dont have problems with players who want to earn more as long as they leave without the drama and dont put down the club afterwards

I have no problem with Mancini or Cassano going for money. The problem was with other things Cassano did at Roma and everything Chivu did from the summer onwards till today.
We have players like Juan and Mexes who are absolute quality and are living in the salary cap. I don’t think we are building a B team. We have quality players in every single position. If we are a B team then so are Milan, Juve, Bayern, Valencia, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc…
The only thing is if our players are injured we don’t have like for like talent coming off the bench to replace them. We are a great squad now.. We just can’t carry this greatness over 3-4 seasons which is why I agree that the Sensis have to sell eventually. We did well in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Then we had to sell players. We did well in 2003-04 then we had to sell players. Now we are doing well in 2006-2008 and my feeling is also on to 2009 (but time will tell).
People said that we overachieved after the 06-07 season. The very next year we repeated the same feats and more. Winning the Coppa Italia, CL quarters and 2nd in Serie A two years in a row is not a fluke. The only thing we may have overachieved in is doing so well without Totti for half the year.

fuck money i apreciate roma how it is. scraping for every damn player we got. theres something special about a team where many of its best players play there bc they love the club, they took pay cuts to stay at rome when they could of cashed in at another club. ddr totti potentialy aqualani, mexas, and im sure many more. compare the contracts of roma to any of the other 3, wow. i much rather have a team like roma that struggles financialy than we get some billionare who comes in n takes the romance out of it

And it’s not like Chivu is earning much more at Inter than he would have at Roma. Roma offered him 3.5 mn including bonuses (2.5 mn before). Inter’s offer I believe was 3.5 mn before bonuses. The difference was 1 million a year. Not the difference of 2.5 mn that you are basing your arguments on zack. And Gabs said it best.. It’s the drama and bullshit that we hate.
Samuel left for more money and we still love him, Batigol left Fiorentina for trophies and they still love him.. If Juve didn’t meet Del Piero’s demands and he left would alessio love him any less?

Hey.. I’m not against winning and money. I was all for the takeover. But the club has been improving with every year. We would not have Mexes, Juan, Vucinic, Perrotta, Taddei, Mancini, DDR, Aquilani, Tonetto, Doni, etc… if we went out splashing the cash on the likes of Di Natale, Mutu and Huntelaar. They all came via loans, co-ownerships, youth development or for cheap.

I was translating an article on roma news and ended up with this little nugget:
“It is drunk a toast between the parts does not appear far away.”
Il brindisi tra le parti non appare lontano. No clue what it really means.

Means a toast between the 2 parties does not appear far off.

This might be your opinion and the opinion of many/most people here but I doubt that there would be many “neutrals” (supporters of other teams, I mean) that would agree with you.
I don’t. I think that Roma gets by using lesser (cheaper and not as deep) talent overall due to playing style. Attacking as much as you do covers up a lot of flaws in your defense/holding midfield, in my opinion.

it will be more bearable when he is 28 and she is 20. Anyone older than 22 dating a teen just sounds weird. Whatever floats his boat though. His tattoos are overkill. I would take him back. We could use him.

MAD.. I was referring to the fact that the benches of those teams aren’t in the same class as the starters. When you need quality off the bench (to chase a game or due to injuries) the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Inter, Real and Barca have an advantage over the rest.
I mean Bayern are stacked but have the likes of Sosa and van Buyten on the bench. Whereas Inter have Samuel, Suazo and Crespo. Juventus have the likes of Criscito and Palladino whereas Real Madrid have Robben, Sneijder and Gago. Man Utd are stacked to the brim while Roma can throw on Esposito, Ferrari and Brighi. I can go on forever.

Also.. are you kidding? Our attacking paves over our midfield and defense? We are much more susceptible to counters and lapses in defense when everyone is attacking the way we do.

In which way were the squads I named better than our squad in terms of overall player quality last year? (Aside from financially).
Milan, Juve, Bayern, Valencia, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc…
Maybe one is better in terms of bench, another in terms of money, another in attack, another in defense, etc… But in terms of overall team quality I think they are the same.

Roma has a very strong team, but what we lack is quantity and continuity since we wont keep our best players for much time, and whats worse is that we won’t replace them with adequate players most of the time

That’s pretty much my point at the start.. Continuity. And for that we need money.
