Spalletti & Meatballs
By: chris | June 30th, 2007The Don Luciano had a pretty interesting interview yesterday and talked about everything under the sun. He mentioned Christian Chivu and said it was basically all down to scrilla, Roma can’t with his compete demands. In fact, even Barca can’t compete with his demands. For those defending Chivu - it’s your move. The fact that he’s demanding too much dough from Barca is ridiculous. It’s reported he’s asking €4.5m while they just signed Eric Abidal for €2m per. Is Chivu twice the player that Abidal is? No. Would I rather have Abidal than Chivu? Yes. Though he doesn’t have the athleticism, he’s a more reliable and better pure defender and he’s not as liable to disappear when it matters.
Spalletti also touched on some of the offers, like saying he would take Victor Obinna, Julio Cruz or Ludovic Giuly in a Chivu deal. Obinna? Maybe. The other two? Please no. I’m thinking at this point he’d take anybody. Rosella’s incompetency has to be weighing on him. He also implied Mauro Esposito will likely make his way to Rome at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later. Luciano also stated that Roma has lost Francesco Tavano and Christian Wilhelmsson. I’ve been pretty reserved on the latter name, I just want to make sure he’s 100% gone before I start popping corks and pouring bubbly all over myself.
One of his main goals is to find options for the wing, so I would take that to mean Esposito is not the only name Roma will be adding to the depth chart. Luciano said he wants Roma to invest the Chivu cash in the attacking line and Espo will require next to no cash, so I guess we can deduce he is after one high-class player. Though he also mentioned they still have Mirko Vucinic and Vincenzo Montella as attack-based players who will contribute. I would be 100% alright with not acquiring a big-name winger if Mirko was given a chance to shine in his more natural setting, instead of sticking him out on the wing. If Luciano would switch it up to a 3-2-3-2 every now and then play to Mirko’s strengths it could expose his talents and give Spal more tactical options. The guy is a hugely talented youngster who essentially was just bought for €11m. Let him play, I beg you.
Speaking of that 3-2-3-2, if Roma does acquire a RW/RB like Mesto, Cicinho or Faubert, does anyone have a problem with trying out this setup against weaker teams in the beginning of the season (using Cicinho as a guess):
Doni;
Mexes-Juan-Ferrari;
De Rossi-Barusso/Aquilani;
Cici-Perrotta-Mancini;
Totti-Mirko.
Before everybody jumps all over me for the omission of Pizarro, with a 3 man backline he isn’t nearly adequate enough defensively and Barusso would be ideal as an enforcer so De Rossi can push up. Also, if Mirko stays up top, Totti can drop back even a little more that usual to take over playmaking duties. The back line has 3 quality defenders but also has two that can push up on the left. The RW has a guy who can drop back in defensive situations to make it essentially a 4-2-2-2 if need be. Totti has someone to beat the offside trap after he gets possession on the counter attack, with two high-quality wingers flying up for support, as well as Perrotta to join The Roman Clusterfuck. I guess the point is the formation has options without having to go to the bench for a substitution and can change tactically in a second with ease, and it gets one of the most talented players on the team into the lineup. I fully trust Spalletti tactically, but I just have some concerns that a team can set itself up to counter Roma’s 4-2-3-1 on any given day. There’s an old adage in boxing, “Styles make fights.” Which means no matter how good you are, someone with the perfect counter style can defeat you on any given day even though they may have a fraction of your talent. It would be nice to see a few different looks to keep teams guessing the night before.
Chivugate:
Barca’s got one foot out the door. Inter is lowballing Roma to nobody’s surprise. Real look like they’re now leading the race. Papers say Chivu should be out by Monday. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd bullshit.
We good?
The Wholly Uninspired News:
I)Roma wants Kappa. Kappa wants Roma. Legea wants Roma. Roma doesn’t want Legea. Legea claims signed contract. Roma claims no signed contract. Scandal ensues.
This club can’t even get the damn uniforms without fucking it up.
II) Cross Antonio Chimenti off that prospective keeper list, he’s headed to Udine to backup Morgan De Sanctis. Is it me or is Pietro Leonardi trying to stockpile Roma targets just to piss of the Giallorossi? Fab Quags and Chimenti, now they’re headed after Giandomenico Mesto.
III) Back when Roma was trying to formulate a Romanian entourage to convince Chivu to stay, they were linked with Stefan Radu, a defender of some sort. Well, looks like he’s headed to Genoa so there’s still a spot open for token Romanian defender. Razvan Rat anybody?
Wait, hold up a second. Rat is rumored to be drawing heavy interest from Rangers. Seriously, just go away. Rangers is like the genital herpes of the European mercato. They keep flaring up whenever you least expect it and it keeps you from scoring your prime target, but they lack the punch to take you out. They don’t have the completely unnerving effect of syphilis (Inter) or gonorrhea (Man U), and you know you can get rid of it if you really try, but it’s still a pesky little bugger. They’re about a Cicinho rumor away from a moderately disturbing commercial with a bunch of outdoorsy people who are waaaaaaaaaay too happy to have the herp, and a topical cream. (I’m just assuming that’s how it’s treated. Martha, wanna contact some of those WAGs and get confirmation?)
IV) It looks like Julien Faubert has become the French Franco Semioli. Another club has come a calling, and Bordeaux’s prez has said a deal could be knocked out by the end of the weekend. It’s not Rangers, but apparently they’re refusing to divulge the identity of the club behind Door 72. A “leak” says it’s West Ham United. That fits, they have big bucks now and haven’t been afraid to throw it around. Expect some more Faubert to Roma rumors soon, because that’s how the mercato works. 2 + 2 = π. Or, U + Me = Calculus.
V) The main story for the day yesterday on il Romanista’s web site was an altogether uninspired interview from Ricardo Faty. One in which he waxed lyrical about not a damn thing, including not knowing anything regarding his status, Faubert, Juan or where Chivu’s going. Is it August 26th yet?
VI) There is a reported pricetag of €10m for Cicinho. I don’t buy it for a second. The rumored deal was for €5-6m last fall and he was bought from Sao Paolo for €4.5m. He has certainly done nothing to force his price to go up over the last two years, especially this year after the injury, unless of course there’s a premium for anybody who has ever put on the Real Madrid kit. I still think he comes.
* - By the way, you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to use that headline. Enjoy that.

Real Madrid want to give Cicinho to Roma in the Chivu deal seeing as theyre going to buy Dani Alves from Siviglia and have like 12 other players that can play that role. They’re supposedly giving Roma an offer, but Roma wants to wait until Barca is officially out of the race before discussing a deal with their arch-rivals. I gotta agree with you Chris, sometimes Roma just needs to be a tad bit more assertive, to prevent them from getting #**#@% over by less sportsmanlike teams. The Inter deal is 14 million + Obinna loan, but it may be upgraded to 14 mill plus 50% or all of Obinna. I can’t wait till this thing ends…

Hi im new here, and ive been reading your blog for a couple of days now. Anyways i cant believe what a greedy fuck chivu is. How could he even think he deserves 4.5mil a year.

hey chivu go out for 18 million . I’m really fed up.
About tactics: i don’t think Mr. mirrorBald will change 4-2-3-1 because it was great this and last year. So my opinion:
Doni
cicinho (or faubert) mexes juan modesto( mathieu grosso or someone left that we will buy)
de rossi chiliano(mirrorBald loves him)/aqua
taddei perrotta mancini
Il CAPITANO
And the bench - curci - casetti panucci( he can play in centre can’t he?) ferrari( maybe he will even push out juan cause i really liked him this season)tonetto
barusso aqua/ chiliano 2 new wingers - esposito( semioli mesto di natale or mikele) i don’t know. mirko and one more new forward like obina cruz santa cruz or another dickhead.Posted from

What is Chivu thinking? He’s good but not that good. For any club, €4.5m is not small change. I think he’ll probably end up at Inter. If Roma can get Cicinho’s price knocked down to €8m, they should take it.

That’s what Inter does, they offer enormously overvalued contracts to get player. They were a second-rate team for so many years, nobody wanted to play for them. It’s what they have to do to get the talent. Now Chivu is using that Inter offer as leverage.
As for Cicinho - €8m is still too much, especially for Rosella. The rumored deal before he wrecked his knee last fall was €6m. He was bought for €4.5m from Sao Paolo. I’d say €5m is fair after the largely non-existent season he just had. Though his talent is certainly worth much more.

Well, Real Madrid’s negotiators aren’t that good, so hopefully you’ll be able to get your price. Since Cicinho wants to leave, it’s added leverage.

You probably could not wait to use spalletti and meatballs as a title…nice work. My buddy calls Roma Spalletti and his meatballs all the time.

I don’t agree about Chivu being a greedy fuck. He was offerred 4.5 mln by Inter. Its not like he made that figure up himself b/c he thinks he is worth that much.
If you work at a job and your company (lets say Dell) currently pays you 50k per year but your work has been very good so Dell offers you a raise to 70k per year……and another company (IBM) offers you 120k. What do you do? Does leaving fot IBM make you greedy? Even if you yourself don’t really feel like you are worth more than 100k, wouldn’t you only aqccept a job that is competitive with your best current offer? I would and I don’t think I’m greedy AND I think I’m very loyal.Posted from

I agree with both arguments here. Lorenzo, you make a valid point which is very practical, but we’re not talking about practical here. We’re talking about multimillion euro contracts here, where either way you’re fairly set for life. The difference between the Dell/IBM scenario and Chivugate is Dell didn’t pay €21m for your services. They got you for free, well, maybe they threw in a free coffee mug. Dell (Roma) is trying to lose the minimum amount on their initial investment whereas you (Chivu) are doing something which a) benefits a direct rival and b) limits their negotiating leverage. Which in turn is directly hurting your former employer’s ability to recoup their losses from a business standpoint (financially) and then make progress after your departure (on the pitch replacements). It’s a good comparison, but there are some tiny difference which become a major factor.
That being said, if you’re offered €4.5m from a direct rival and trying to use it as leverage with another club, are you greedy? No, your agent is doing his job. Is he worth it? No, but that doesn’t mean he won’t get it. If he winds up at Inter based solely on €€€€€€€€ when he could’ve had a small drop-off in pay abroad which would benefit both sides is he a selfish backstabber? Yes.
If Chivu signs with Inter there is not a single way he can claim Roma loyalty. His best bet right now is hoping Real comes in and offers silly money to both he and Roma.

Chirs, I agree that the two scenarios are not 100% analagous, but my point is that #1, Chivu was not the one that determined he is worth 4.5 mln, Inter did. He, like 99% of us will take the higher salary (assuming it is significantly higher than the competition). Also, Chivu has been at Roma for what, 3 years? Why would he be THAT loyal to begin with? Its not like Roma is his childhood team or anything, is it? I’m sure that when he’s gone, wherever he goes, he won’t really care about what Roma fans think one way or the other. I’m not that happy about it, but thats how I think it is. I too will be very happy when this is all over with and I hope he ends up at Real for Cicinho and 10 mil.

I’m not arguing he shouldn’t take the money. It’s his claims of Roma as his home and his loyalty to the club that I have a problem with. I don’t really think he has any reason to be loyal, but for some reason he feels that way. No question the main antagonist here is Moratti, and I really don’t know why a case isn’t being made against him for approaching Chivu without Roma’s consent. Or without Cagliari’s consent while they’re at it.
I think much of the problem with Chivu from the majority of Roma fans stems from the fact that we have come to accept nothing but utter loyalty from the players. From Giannini, Di Bartolomei and Conti to Totti, De Rossi, Aquilani and Mexes, we’re completely spoiled. These players give their hearts and souls to this club and sacrifice financial gains for returned affection and we’ve come to expect that, when in reality the majority of athletes don’t operate that way. I have no problem with Chivu accepting a larger contract elsewhere, just don’t say your heart belongs to Rome and then sign with the rival. That’s bullshit.
By the way, unlikely thought here. What are the chances Roma doesn’t like any of the Chivu offers and simply says “fuck the cap” and hands him a substantial extension offer? That’s been lingering in the back of my head for awhile now. They have to break the cap soon anyway, likely within 6-12 months (De Rossi, Mancini). Nearly improbable, but I’ve seen stranger.

I agree. Don’t make grand love proclamations if you don’t mean it. I mean what guy has ever done that in order to get head….ehhhm…..ahead in life? He should have just kept his mouth shut, agreed. About the possibility of Chivu staying, I think you need to put the pipe down now Chris. The ONLY way he stays at this point is if Roma keeps him and his contract runs out. The ONLY way!

You’re right Chris, the loyalty is what makes Roma so great. The “Romano and Romanista” players which dreamt of playing at Roma all their lives, finally get their chance and win the hearts of fans. Every player like that is worth 20 Chivus and Ronaldos, and every Roma win is worth 20 scudetti. That’s why Roma fans celebrated their team more after the Coppa win than Inter fans celebrated their band of mercenaries after the scudetto win.
I don’t think Chivu will extend his contract, Spalletti said in IlRomanista’s recent interview that there is no choice but to sell Chivu, based on the offers made to the club and to the player. This ongoing transfer soap opera sort of made us forget that only a month or so ago Chivu seemed to be one of the team’s most certain “Roma for life” players, idolized by the fans, and that if anything it would be Mexes who would change jersey.

I was always of the belief that Mexes is here for the long run. He’s such a passionate person and plays with a fiery temperament, he belongs at Roma. Chivu always struck me as somewhat reserved and more of a black & white man. And while he may love Rome, he was on the out eventually. I just thought it would be a few years from now.
As for the contract, provided Roma gets a quality offer (haven’t seen a legit one yet), I am fully in the sell Chivu camp. I don’t imagine an extension could happen, but look at Trez and Zebina at Juve. Chivu asked for more money, Trez gave a big ole “fuck you” to the owners in front of millions. Which one would you pick to leave with a gun to your head? This is Italia, stranger has happened.
And if I didn’t get drug-tested for ridiculous shit like Robitussin and Sudafed as well as the good stuff, I would NOT be putting my pipe down. But alas, I concede to permanent sobriety. The pipe is down. The pipe is down…..

I know the Italian media are saying that Barca are looking at Gaby Milito instead of Chivu, but that doesn’t seem very likely to me as the prices quote for Milito are around 20-5 million euros and I’m not sure we’re prepared to pay that much. Plus, aren’t Juve trying to sign him?

first of all, i have noticed that there are quite a few people from the boston massachusetts area on this message board. i find that great seeing as though i am from boston as well (now living in europe). we suffered through years of lou gorman being the general manager of the boston red sox, so rosellas tactics are nothing new to me. as for jeff, i left boston 7 years ago so i wasnt able to enjoy the world series win from up close either.
on to to roma.
guys, sell chivu, get it over with. then lets go get mesto, modesto, esposito and one more player, hopefully could be cicinio. to tell you the truth i think its possible they get mesto, modesto, esposito, cicinho and santa cruz. i am a fan of santa cruz, young player with talent that needs a change of scenery, the thing that scares me is that he gets injured a lot.
basically , i liked the team we had last year, if it wasnt for that game in england against manchester we could have gone to the champions league final. so, for me, sell chivu and get a lot of good replacements, since we cant get the big money stars, get lots of good replacements so de rossi, perrota, totti, taddei and mancini arent dead tired 3/4 of the way through the season.
would you guys like
panucci, mexes, juan, cichno modesto mesto tonnetto
de rossi, aquilani, perrota, pizzarro, the new guy from rimini, mancini, taddei, esposito
totti, vucnic, santa cruzi would love it and i think its possible and i think they could fight for every championship.
5 signings basically, santa cruz, esposito, cicino, modesto, mesto. shouldnt we be able to get those 5 guys at the very least?????Posted from

I would like Mesto too, but it seems as though he is an alternative to Cicinho or Faubert, besides Udinese is very close to signing him and Roma won’t be able to make any offers till after the Chivu crap is done with. I think Roma will work Cicinho in the Chivu trade, get Esposito, Modesto, and a LW to give Mancini a breather. If we sell Chivu to Inter, though, we’ll get Obinna (who could really become a great player), and probably leave it at that for the wings, and get Mesto or maaybe Faubert for the RB position. I don’t see Santa Cruz coming to Roma, we already have 3 great players for one striker position.

When I say leave it at that for the wings, I mean including Esposito, who’s is virtually a Roma player by now.

Yes George it is pretty cool seeing all the former Bostonians posting on here. And alot of us seem to be in Ireland as well.
I agree Roma just need to sell Chivu and get it over with. The whole thing just seems to be throwing a monkey wrench in all the other mercato business Roma is doing. Also I agree on getting good replacements. Adding more depth with quality replacments will allow Roma to really attack on both fronts. Serie A and Champions League. Although we did get second place, Roma dropped much needed points on shit teams probably due to exhaustion/preocupation with the Champions League. Points that possibly could have helped us overtake Inter.
