Sampdoria: The Cost of Desire.
By: chris | March 14th, 2009
Sampdoria v Roma
How does one begin to assess the cost of desire? Is there a number? There might just be. There might be a few, even. Let’s start with three, four, thirteen and sixteen.
3: The number of professional midfielders who have been called up – Matteo Brighi, David Pizarro and Felipe. And we’re calling Felipe a ‘professional midfielder’ very loosely. Nice debut, but he’s still a self-moving training cone.
4: The number of Primavera players called up by necessity, not because they’re all kinds of fantastic and have nothing more to learn at the youth level. (Brosco’s close, though, which is something.)
13: The number of professional players called up who should be playing – David Pizarro and Marco Motta absolutely should not. Oh, and Simone Loria…but for different reasons.
16: The number of professional players called up period.
If the side wasn’t simply decimated by injuries, Pizarro and Motta would be watching the Samp fixture in track suits on their sofas. But with only half a squad in Genoa and precisely one healthy and match fit midfielder, they’ll likely be forced onto the pitch in some fashion at some point. The carcasses which littered the Olimpico pitch midweek only told half the story, it seems.
I’ll stop short of calling this a lost cause, but it’s getting quite close. As otherworldly as John Arne Riise’s performance midweek was – and it was that and so much more (a bag of chips, even) – eying his name on the projected team sheet under ‘CB’ is still less preferable than death by constipation. Ditto for the ‘best case scenario’ of Max Tonetto as a central midfielder. Julio Baptista, Yeremy Menez and Mirko Vucinic all on the pitch at once? That side’s got as much balance as a seesaw with a leprechaun and the world’s fattest man; while the combination of Baptista’s touch and Menez’s ability to remain upright might inspire me to end the torture by ingesting a porcupine.
It’s all gone a bit wobbly upside down, to say the least. Whatever is run out will probably be three leagues short of a “C” team.
And despite Samp being rubbish they’re decent at home, so there’s really only one mission tomorrow: come home with as many or more healthy bodies than they departed with. Points are a bonus.
Squads
2 CHRISTIAN PANUCCI
7 DAVID MARCELO CORTES PIZARRO
9 MIRKO VUCINIC
13 MARCO MOTTA
14 FILIPE
15 SIMONE LORIA
17 JOHN ARNE RIISE
19 JULIO CESAR BAPTISTA
21 SOUYMANE DIAMOUTENE
22 MAX TONETTO
23 VINCENZO MONTELLA
24 JEREMY MENEZ
25 GUILHERME DE MORAIS GUSMAO ARTUR
27 JULIO SERGIO BERTAGNOLI
32 DONIEBER ALEXANDER MARANGON (DONI)
33 MATTEO BRIGHI
35 ANDREA BERTOLACCI*
36 RICCARDO BROSCO*
37 ALESSANDRO CRESCENZI*
38 MARCO D’ALESSANDRO*
Indisponibili: Cassetti, Aquilani, Perrotta, Juan, Totti, Taddei, Cicinho
Squalificati: De Rossi e Mexes. (DDR is suspended for Juventus also.)
Injuries
Francesco: Francesco’s got a case of the “I was hurt before I played 120 minutes plus penalties on Wednesday”. Juve is the goal.
Perrotta: ‘Roma-itis’.
Juan & Taddei: One month with flexor injuries.
Baptista: Being rubbish.
Although it might not be all bad if the second half of this video is any indication (mute…now).
Cicinho & Cassetti: Right back-itis.
Mexes: Hasn’t trained all week, still with the fever (suspended anyway). Damn you Yeremy.
Aquilani: Alberto has flown to Amsterdam to receive treatment on his ankle and hopefully cure all his ails. As long as this day spa actually has medical credentials, all’s well.
Projected XI
Doni
Motta, Panucci, Diamoutene, Riise
Pizarro, Brighi, Tonetto
Baptista, Menez
Vucinic
Motta is looking very likely as he’s recovered perhaps a bit better than expected and Pizarro is looking likely only because the next midfielder on the depth chart is Damiano Tommasi – and I’m not sure he’ll be the most fantastically alert player to ever step on a pitch after catching a red eye from Tianjin.
While Spalletti will do his best to incorporate tactics and players in positions they can actually play into his starting lineup, healthy bodies will be the absolute premium.
And really, what would this team do without Panucci right now? (Bastard.)
Predictions
Game: 1-1 Roma
Goals: Cassano (45), Baptista (51)
MOTM: Brighi
When: 1500 CET, 1000 EST.
Where: Luigi Ferraris, Genoa.
Forecast: 18°C, partly sunny.

Fadayn… that is the dumbest thing i have ever fucking heard… joke or not.
y would any of you want Cassano back at all????? Let alone want to give up FOUR fucking players for him? How stupid could you be

Fadayn, I think you are being a little harsh. Riise’s been actually good for us in the past matches, and Menez needs time – remember he is younger than Giovinco – we need to give him time to develop his talents(stop diving) and he will come through.
As for Cassano – he is like the bitchy ex-girlfriend you still pine for and try to forget what happened last time. NO – we must get someone else – Rossi, Acquafresca, Nillmar (what happened there?), Cavenaghi (I just like his instincts). We need a provide striker, Menez can fill in Cassano’s role – just give him time.Posted from

Can anybody explain what happened with our rigore yesterday? Did the ref handout a yellow card to the wrong player?

Doni
Motta – Mexes – Juan – Vargas
Aquilani – De Rossi – Brighi
Rosina
Totti – VucinicSomething I’d like to see one day. I think Spalletti would be able to get the best out of Vargas, maybe turn him into a winger like Zenga did at Catania. Also, seeing Torino floating in the relegation zone might unleash Rosina into the market (hopefully…)

jaz hoyt i guess you are right about LORIA! I tottaly forgat about him. That answers my question why we got so many goals in.
Doni is great at times but not consistant! Also take a look at penalties with Arsenal again. Check out the experience on Arsenal keeper and Doni. Doni just comes to the goal and doesn’t even try to play with the penalty takers head. Arsenal keeper was trying to play mentally with our guys which in my opinion is a part of the game, AND in my opinion he knocked down Roma!
If we want to compete in CL we need a someone like Bufon, Cesar, Frey, Van de sar.
Strong keeper + strong strker is what Inter got and look what they doing!I also say no to Cassano and yes to Rossi!

To be honest I think Doni performed better than Arsenal’s keeper. The only shot he saved was Vuci’s soft tap down the middle.
My only criticism of Doni is that when you get down to the 6th and 7th players taking penalties with that much pressure on them, you know they are not going to knock it in the corner. I kept yelling for Doni to quit guessing and just react to the guys who probably have not taken a penalty since their youth days.
Still love Doni thoughPosted from

Doni would have made 2 or 3 more saves if he wasn’t guessing the whole time. If they beat you with a perfect penalty, so be it, but if I ever see Doni get beat on a penalty like the one Diaby took, I might have to strangle him. You could tell he was totally rattled after the save that should have been though.
Almunia could have been standing right where Riise placed his penalty and still wouldn’t save it. That was perfect.

wowowow Adler,Augusto,Helmes,Barnetta…why not les us call ourselves Bayer Romakusen ey?

btw Don Michele,Torino have been in relegation zonefor quite some seasons now since they got to serie A but it still surprisses me there’s so few Rosina rumours. He’s by far their best player

Agree’d Jonas. But if this would finally be the season where Torino should fall into relegation, it would be a different matter than past seasons.

Does anyone know how Marcelo is doing at Real Madrid? Love that kid.

I disagree with those of you who think our back line has problems other than injuries. Motta has absolutely amazed me. Riise has totally turned his game up ten notches and Mexes/Juan are the best CB pair in Italy…when they all get to play together! We have had a poor goal differential the past couple years I agree. I can’t explain except to say it comes with the territory of our open play. Seriously though Mexes and Juan are the best in Serie A now that Nesta and Maldini are gathering dust on the shelf!

Marcelo’s damn near nailed down a starting spot at left-wing.

So I’m watching ESPN2 and their weekly CL analysis. They prefaced the Roma-Arsenal Tie with “Roma went into this match praying for a miracle.” Is over-turning a 1-0 deficit really something miraculous? Am I being overly sensitive when I think that the extreme EPL bias is what motivated that lead-in?

Robbie… That and the fact that half our team was in Korea to be mended by the MASH unit!

How about returning the favor this week after we beat Genoa and Fiorentina? That would be nice
Marcelo was terrible until he moved to LW. He cant defend

Caroe you gave me a heart attack.

haha yea me too caroe altough Artur quite surprised me in his matches (not that I expected THAT much from him though)
I think after Inter beat Genoa and Viola,we could indeed return them a favour. If it wasn’t for their sake, the 4th spot was almost unreachable but now it’s still 2 points.
Inter will win the scudetto this year no matter what Juve or Milan do so…and I always love a win against the ‘former’ ladri d’italia, merda juve!Posted from

I seriusly doubt that we can beat Juve right now. We are like a para olimpic soccer team. And the bastards are in a good form, especially Giovincho. There is always hope, maybe Monty will fly again?

Yeah Robbie, I would say as a whole they are biased. They were talking about the England-Italy performances and everyone was talking about the EPL being better and Tommy Smyth made it clear that the italian teams couldn’t get a bounce their way. Think about it, if Zlatan doesn’t hit the post, if the ref makes the right call on the Chiellini challenge or if Gigi doesn’t totally misjudge that one shot, or if they call the foul on Motta, everyone is most likely through.
