Sampdoria at the Olimpico: Part Deux.

Roma v Samp II

The important part: the game will not start anew, but the lineups may. Wonderful, because I don’t think Spal had enough subs. I wish the game had began anew, what happened in October can’t conceivably be called football, more like shallow water polo or something of the sorts, but whatever. So 84 minutes and 40 seconds of soul tickling calcio.

Lady luck’s deep hatred for all things giallorosso seems to have tempered in recent times, a thankful development after the first third of the season. Unfortunately we’ve reverted back to October time for this game and lady luck is mighty pissed once again (it’s a female thing). Mirko was suspended for the game which meant Francesco saddled up; now Francesco is injured, Mirko’s still suspended and the team is desperately in need of a striker with one, maybe two working knees. Enter a maybe-kinda-sorta-not really Jeremy Menez to complement the bumblin’-stumblin’ Julio Baptista. Oh, and Doni’s out. Plus the originally suspended Philippe Mexes who will be partnering Super Mirko in the stands.

Of course, the team/bench will be featuring a freshly knocked Alberto Aquilani (hamstrung) and a freshly fresh David Pizarro (fresh), who have about six seconds of match fit game time between them since the beginning of time. Or November 4th, which is both when Roma arose from its slumber and when eternity began anew – because the world runs on Roman cycles, dontchaknow. So that’s Totti, Doni, Mexes, Vucinic, Tonetto, Okaka all out while Menez, Aquilani and Cassetti will all be sporting at least one crutch as they make their way to the pitch in the early evening.

Yes, this can only go well.

The original preview. My how things have changed.

Last Five

Roma: WWWLD
Sampdoria: LLWLD

As bad as Roma were earlier in the year, Sampdoria have been equally as bad the entire campaign. They picked up slightly against the fish-in-a-barrel types in the last two months (Torino, Reggina, Lecce & Bologna), but still have yet to beat anyone of real note. They’ve drawn with Inter, Juve and Udinese, and yet can’t get those three points. Despite the disappointment of a dropped two points against Milan, I’d say this puts Roma in the drivers seat for the three points. And let’s call a spade a spade here: they need these three points. No ifs, ands or butts about it.

Squads

Roma:

AQUILANI
ARTUR
BAPTISTA
BERTAGNOLI
BRIGHI
CASSETTI
CICINHO
DE ROSSI
FILIPE
GRECO
JUAN
LORIA
MENEZ
MONTELLA
PANUCCI
PERROTTA
PIPOLO
PIZARRO
RIISE
TADDEI
VIRGA

I was shocked to see “21″ in the little preamble on the official website only to realize the “21″ feature Virga, Greco, Felipe and Pietro “The Chosen One” Pipolo. And at least one will be on the pine. Again: this can only go well.

Sampdoria:

Portieri: Castellazzi, Mirante.
Difensori: Accardi, Gastaldello, Lucchini, Raggi, Campanella.
Centrocampisti: Delvecchio, Dessena, Franceschini, Padalino, Palombo, Pieri, Sammarco, Stankevicius, Ziegler.
Attaccanti: Bellucci, Bonazzoli, Cassano, Fornaroli.

Campagnaro is out for Samp, but other than that are looking pretty stacked.

Projected XI

Artur
Cicinho, Juan, Panucci, Riise
Taddei, DDR, Brighi
Pizarro, Perrotta
Baptista

Hardly ideal, but at least they’re all running on full tanks. The same can’t be said for the best options off the bench, however.

Key Matchups

From the original preview:

Roma v Cassano: This one’s pretty self-explanatory, particularly for those who’ve been a fan for more than two years.

Sampdoria v Cassano: This one’s also self-explanatory, as an emotionally charged Cassano can be extraordinarily volatile and destructive. Normally TGIP’s boys going a man up is less than favorable, but exceptions can be made, particularly if it’s Talentino.

Roma v Roma: Any Cassano effects aside, this is the only matchup worth talking about until they can find their feet. A battle within themselves.

Roma v Cassano: Ditto.

Sampdoria v Cassano: Ditto.

Roma v Roma: They may have found their feet, but their greatest nemesis is always the one within. Ditto.

Predictions

Game: 2-1 Roma.
Goals: Brighi (39), Taddei (51), Cassano (70).
MOTM: Brighi.
Cassano Red:
70.

When: 2030 CET, 1430 EST.
Where: Stadio Olimpico, Rome.
Forecast: 11°C, and in a cruel blow: rain.

Streaming: Here.
Liveblog: Possible.

Away fans banned from four games
    Wednesday 14 January, 2009
Away fans will be barred from attending four upcoming Serie A games, including Napoli-Roma, Milan-Genoa and Juventus-Fiorentina.

The Casms – the committee set up to evaluate and prevent crowd trouble at sporting events – has passed its verdict on four at-risk encounters.

Juventus-Fiorentina on January 24 is the focus of intense rivalry between these sides and so it is considered safer to sell only one ticket per person which cannot be transferred to anyone else’s name.

Napoli-Roma on January 25 is the Derby del Sud and Giallorossi supporters will not be allowed to travel to the game.

It was the meeting between these clubs at the Stadio Olimpico in Week 1 that sparked the clampdown on travelling fans after Napoli ultras caused thousands of pounds worth of damage on the train.

Fiorentina-Napoli will also see the away end closed on January 28, while Milan-Genoa is blocked off that same weekend.

Baptista has scored in some of the most important games of the year. Without him we’d probably still be in relegation trouble.

He scored the winning double against Bordeaux to restore our CL campaign and improve our morale. Then he scored the winner in the derby to get our league campaign back on track.. And now he scored both in this must win game to pull us back into CL spot contention. All we need is a goal or two against Arsenal now.. ;)

What happened to Doni anyways? and also what the hell has happened to Okaka, its like the boy cut his legs off or something…

against Torino I think we can have an even better game with Mexes and vucinic on the field…

looks like my boy Pizarro had another great game, I dont get why he gets so much hate, as well as Cici and Baptista

I thought i’d post the current top half of the table for my good friend kj to peruse:

    Inter 43
    Juventus 39
    Milan 34
    Napoli 33
    Genoa 32
    Fiorentina 32
    Lazio 30
    Roma 27
    Palermo 26
    Catania 25

unfortunately, he’s gonna have to come up with new gloating material or spend a bit more time busting balls over at the catania blog…until the coming weekend, that is.

we have a real strong team, now we just need one more LB and CB maybe one that can play both, one more defensive mid and maybe a striker… I hope we can get one this winter period…

what is getting me worried is that De Rossi plays almost every single game and never gets subed, he needs someone that can give him a rest once in a while

brighi and perrotta can provide cover for him if he needs a rest. problem is that with all the other guys out currently, they are forced to play other roles. also, given the amount of ground yet to make up in the second half of the season, spal wants to put out his best options available (for league games and cl) to try and secure as many results as possible. i only see him resting for coppa games but even that might be questionable given the upcoming competition in the 1/4 final.

We lost 5 games in row after that game. He got the CL-campaign on track but the morale was still really bad.

Pauly is in the other place, avala, Satan says people working in Purgatory just don’t pay attention to what Vatican says. Honestly, if I told you, you don’t exist, would it stop you from breathing/eating watching Roma matches? PS: Satan claims that Vatican has been spreading rumours about the Purgatory as well as the Hell for a long time, that’s called black PR and therefore he’s considering taking legal actions.

Yes, but I’m afraid they’re kinda miserly and he would go bankrupt, trying to pay their fees. And he’s spent much money on new furnaces so he’s got to save. Crisis affects anyone, even the Satan himself.

    whole team played well.
good to see pizza man play well and cici and aqui get some confidence back.
i think aqui should be able to hopefully slot into perrotta’s place this weekend as he is suspended now.

Goal.com’s player ratings were ridiculous.. Must have been one hell of a game.

    Baptista and DDR with 8/10
Pizarro, Aquilani, Cicinho and Brighi with 7/10
Juan, Panucci, Artur and Perrotta with 6.5/10
Cassetti, Riise and Taddei had a 6/10

The average is 6.77 which is quite high. Nobody had a average game let alone a bad one.

Well, we could get those kind of ratings if we played Samp every week. I didn’t see the whole game, but during the part I saw, we were just pinging the ball around all over the place without Samp having much to say about it.

    Baptista says:
“It was a great night for us, as we needed the three points” Baptista declared in the interview with Sky.
“From my perspective the most important thing is to help the team, and to do what the coach asks.
“I played a different role tonight, and thanks to my team mates I think that I have helped the club, which pleases me,” he added.
“We are well positioned at this stage, but it all depends on us.
“We are aiming for fourth place, and so all we can do is keep winning and see what happens from there.
“The secret is to train every day for 20 minutes, and just focus on the little things that will lead us to victory,” he concluded.”

    Spal says
Tonight was important in terms of our rise up the table,” Spalletti declared in the interview.
“Prior to the contest I knew that my players were switched on, and I could see that they were set for a big game tonight,” he added.
“Baptista? He is a great player that can play anywhere I ask him to. He is physically very strong, and has proven to be an excellent addition to our squad.
“[Rodrigo] Taddei? He no longer has the ability to play 90 minutes, as his legs do not allow him to, however he did do very well tonight.
“[David] Pizarro? He was certainly amongst our best in this match, especially when running with the ball.
“Artur? He proved tonight that in the rare circumstances when we will require his services, he will be able to give us his all,” Spalletti concluded
