Mssr. Menez

So the big news yesterday revolved around Jeremy Menez saying he wanted to return to France if he wasn’t going to play. The big news today revolved around his agent saying this is not the case and it was merely spoken in a moment of frustration and misery.

Of course it was. Have you ever seen a more miserable looking bastard in your life than Jeremy Menez? He makes most French look like goddamn Care Bears. I’m sure he just forgot to take his Prozac and he’ll be fine.

But seriously, one can really see how his frustration would be mounting. Everyone wanted him and he came to Roma, where he started out the year as a solid part of the starting rotation. While he was part of said rotation and getting major minutes the team sucked. Now he’s not getting minutes and the team’s good, not to mention in a formation which won’t feature his skills nearly as much as the 4-2-3-1 would. Jeremy probably doesn’t foresee a ton of playing time for the rest of the year, and he just wants to play and develop. No harm there. You want players who want to play.

But Spalletti’s giving him minutes here or there, and the more good performances he strings together, the more his minutes and impact will grow. And a goal would do absolute wonders.

Philouppe

Interview with Roma News:

Journo: “A player that you particularly dislike aside from Nedved?”
Philou: Nedved.

Classic.

Speaking of Rubentus, let’s congratulate ADP on number 250.

But more importantly, Philou has absolutely no plans of leaving Rome.

“I will not leave Roma. Even if we don’t get into the Champions League, it is enough for me to be in Serie A with a Giallorossi shirt. If the club decide to sell me then we will have to see, but I have so much love for Roma.”

Rumor Mill

Sebastian Dubarbier:
I was way more impressed with this cat than Julio Culio, or whatever the feck his name is, the first time around against Cluj. Pacy, technical, dynamic and still very young (22). Spalletti also singled him out before the second round, and I suspect that may play some part in this rumor, as it doesn’t seem a left winger is really high up on the list of needs right now.

Unless, of course, Menez does go out on loan…which he won’t. I don’t doubt Spalletti’s admiration, but unless we see the 4-2-3-1 come back pre-Christmas, I’d have to say a more versatile winger-cum-forward is more likely in the event they do make a January purchase.

Juve & Atletico Madrid also sat up and took notice, which won’t help attempting to sneak him into Trigoria unless they pull a Philou – which, with this damn financial crisis and all, isn’t really out of the question. And I’m not saying I’m totally against it.

Down the line, though, this kid’s probably worth a serious look.

Franco Zuculini: Reportedly another name brought up in the meeting between Prade and Salvatore Bagni yesterday, along with Emmanuel Salvio. Another Argie, he’s billed as the ‘new Mascherano’, as Salvio is the ‘new Lavezzi’. Everybody’s somebody else.

Whether this team needs another prowling DM is highly questionable and with Liverpool, ManU and Juve after him, it just seems like he’d be money best spent elsewhere. Plus he’s too young to make any sort of solid contributions. Maybe one day, now seems a stretch.

Diego Lugano: Strong, bullish Uruguayan centerback for Fenerbahce. I remember four years back reading that he was supposed to be one of the next great CB’s coming out of Sao Paolo, but he hasn’t quite ascended to those lofty heights. Still a high quality defender and would be an enormous upgrade over Loria. Contract is up in 2010 and Fenerbahce ain’t exactly all that good right now, so he may want to try his hand at one of the bigger leagues. Problem is Fener asked Milan & Juve for €10m+ in the summer, which means even if his contract is running up in 18 mos or so, he still won’t be cheap. That and his nickname is positively frightening:

He is better known as Tota, which means “howler” in Spanish.

That’s an ominous pseudonym if I’ve ever heard one. That’d be like nicknaming Doni “Butterfingers” or Mirko “Simone Perrotta”.

Who knows, but a CB in the January window doesn’t sound all that impossible a dream.

Alberto Fontana:
In a swap for Artur.

What the f*ck? This makes no sense.

Marcelo Zalayeta has also been placed on the radar, but I’m ignoring that one just like the lump in my breast.

Last but not least…

Bad news for the gamers in the crowd: you can nevah evah play Pro Evolution Soccer again. Evah.

Apparently a deal between Roma and Internacionale fell through (cicinho-nilmar swap). Inter r asking 18 MIL! for Nilmar (c’mon get your hand of it).

lamagica, u r responsible for sending me 2 aspirins asap. Aren’t drugs cheaper in Canada than US anyway?

Also, IMO Menez dives. Most women footballers would not get felled as easily as Menez does for some softy fouls. If I ever saw him trying to stay on his feet (like I recall Beast doing), I would say he cant help it coz he’s weak. But cant say I have noticed him trying to stay on his feet like Messi etc.

and btw, I am shocked that some people think Lavezzi lacks muscle. He is a stocky little trooper with lots of speed in those legs.

No sign of Pauly so I’m going to sneak in and make a comment (albeit an on-topic one). Menez has disappointed me so far this season, so I’m not really sure he deserves more playing time than he’s getting. Certainly Baptista, Vucinic, and Totti all deserve their places up front, and I’d rather see those three than Menez. I think he should stop whining, and start performing when he’s brought in at the end of games. He’s had chances, but he hasn’t shown the finishing ability yet to warrant a place in the starting XI, especially with the aforementioned talent above him in the pecking order.

I actually think a short loan might do him so good. This seems like a perfect situation for a loan.

Na…Menez needs to play. My guess, judging by his age and the gifts that saw him move here, is that he isn’t very defensive minded, making it hard to put him out right in the place of Taddei. Still, as Chris pointed out. the current formation doesn’t suit him. We have three midfilders playing in this 4-3-1-2. Brighi, DeRossi, and Taddei. Brighi is not winger but he has been playing that outside midfield role. Why? b/c the system doesn’t call for a speedy winger as much as it calls for someone who can dig in and help defend the flanks. To me this is why Menez isn’t seeing more time on the pitch. I’d like for us to get back to a system that calls for speedy wingers and adds flare to our play..then Menez will grow. That is after all why we got him. to replace a Mancini, not Brighi or Taddei.

I don’t buy any of your crap for a dollar…… Menez……dives……maybe some, maybe …once…. twice…. three times a care bear… but come on he’s 21 not 65 like Nedved. That guy Nedved is like Jake Palance, he can do one arm push ups at 65 so he should not get pushed over like Paris in WWI and WWII but he still does. I don’t believe Menez dives on purpose…. Any male that is only 21 is not going to be fully developed and is going to fall down. Can you honestly compare him to Baptista, NO……… Give him some time for Totti’s sake. If a blog like this was around when Totti was coming up he would have had some bad days too where people gave him a bunch of shit for things they did’t like.

I am in know way comparing Totti to Menez and we should not compare him at all to anyone all of us need to accept the fact we don’t know shit and he is really young…..Menez very well could be the next…..Nedved……hopefully not, I hope he is just the next Jeremy Menez. Give him time don’t give him hell. He’s 21 and played for us for 3 months.

I liked the fact that we signed Menez but i was not expecting an instant legend. Hell, even CR3.5’s overrated ass had to be developed. Its just a matter of time and keeps.

I DO think that it would be dumb to send him back to france on loan. Keep him in Italy, have him help someone fight relegation. Chievo maybe? :) He would also get a good feel for Serie A competition.

Lets just say that if a great footballer was a three-layer-cake; Menez already has the first layer, just needs bake up the rest. Man i was some cake now.

mac, i do think that some people are being too harsh on Menez. He needs more confidence and play time. But I still think that he falls over too easily to get fks (prb correlated with confidence). No one in their wildest dream is comparing him to the diving maestro Nedved- coz Menez doesnt manage to fool the ref even once, unlike the masters like Nedved, CR3.5, Gerrard and co. But it just seems like he doesnt try to dodge or stumble to stay on his feet.

I don’t get it…why would you sign someone who has talent and is really young and then 3 months later send him off to another team????? I know he does not want to be a sub, and we all hope he becomes a starter sometime soon. The reality is that we need youth that is talented coming off the bench in case something happens to our veteran starters.

Excellent points, Samson. I never even thought about a loan to a lower serie a team, but that makes a lot of sense, if they were to go that route.

I dont know his history, but i would bet this is the first time he’s lived outside of France for any extended time, and with only one countrymen to keep him company.

Solution- buy Ben Arfa or Benzema

Maybe Spal will give him more PT in the coppa matches, and more sub appearances (hopefully with more PT) to improve and adjust. He really should become a regular sub at least in matches where Roma is cruising- hopefully we’ll see more of those matches soon. Not to overestimate my own footie intelligence, but Menez should get at least 15-20 mins, rather than his customary 5-8 mins as a sub. I do not like the idea of a loan. Roma’s woeful lack of depth makes it nonsensical to send this guy out on loan when Taddei is a starter!

Well, back when Menez came to Roma, I made the comment here that if he chose Roma in order to get into the French team, he might be making a mistake. (both because of Spalletti’s lack of playing time to young guys and Domenech’s distrust of players on Italian soil)

I haven’t seen anything to change my opinion on that. (good thing his agent doesn’t listen to me I guess)

Menez needs to be loaned out to a SERIE A team who will GUARANTEE him regular playing time, so he adjusts to the playing style and can become good player.
