Roma v Oscar Mayer FC Minipreview
By: chris | November 7th, 2008
Bologna v Roma
I won’t lie. I was forced to Wikipedia to get a full scope on Bologna’s roster – have yet to see them play – and it appears to be a melange of Serie A talent past its prime and Serie B talent in its prime. Something the fact that they’re last in both goals conceded and goals scored in Serie A this year would seem to confirm. Not that this means anything considering the still unstable state of Roman affairs, but this is as “gimme” as its going to get at this point, especially considering the current Jaws-high wave of euphoria the lads are riding post-Chelsea. Suffice it to say, a loss would be disastrous, crippling, and probably put a toe tag on the domestic season. A draw would fall just short of full on panic – very short. Can’t possibly afford any reversals in confidence at this point.
So, you know, no pressure.
As for Bologna, Sinisa Mihajlovic will be managing his first ever game tomorrow evening, and he’s already off to a predictably rocky start:
“You don’t need a rifle to win. We can hurt an opponent even with a water pistol, as if you hit them in the eye then it’ll do damage.”
Unless he’s packing that water pistol with acid, lemon juice or Mancio’s love nectar, I’m not quite sure what he’s talking about. If somebody shot me in the eye with a water pistol I’d probably just glare in bewilderment before punching them in the face. So bring all the water pistols you’d like, Sinisa.
This would be one thing if Mihajlovic had any experience, but being a former fence-sitter (who plays for both? seriously?) and a first timer doesn’t mean Bologna’s going into an immediate 180. Davide Ballardini he is not, so hopefully this will just mean one more subtle bounce headed in Roma’s direction.
Squads
Roma:
2 CHRISTIAN PANUCCI
3 CICERO JOAO DE CEZARE (CICINHO)
4 JUAN SILVEIRA DOS SANTOS
5 PHILIPPE MEXES
7 DAVID MARCELO CORTES PIZARRO
9 MIRKO VUCINIC
10 FRANCESCO TOTTI
11 RODRIGO FERRANTE TADDEI
15 SIMONE LORIA
16 DANIELE DE ROSSI

24 JEREMY MENEZ
25 GUILHERME DE MORAIS GUSMAO ARTUR

32 DONIEBER ALEXANDER MARANGON (DONI)
33 MATTEO BRIGHI
77 MARCO CASSETTI
89 OKAKA CHUKA STEFANO
This week’s new injury: Filipe. Finally, someone completely useless goes down. The tides are turning…
Bologna:
Portieri: Antonioli, Colombo
Difensori: Britos, Castellini, Lanna, Moras, Rodriguez, Terzi, Zenoni
Centrocampisti: Carrus, Coelho, Confalone, Marchini, Mudingayi, Valiani
Attaccanti: Adailton, Bernacci, Di Vaio, Marazzina, Paonessa
Projected XI
Here goes something I have never, ever, ever done here…a formation other than the 4-2-3-1:
Doni
Cicinho, Juan, Mexes, GOMR
Perrotta, Pizarro, DDR, Brighi
Totti, Vucinic
It will be interesting to see how this works against a team with about one-fiftieth the attacking firepower of Chelsea and, presumably, one which will spend much more time in their own half than Roma’s.
The key to a win? That back line. Despite the lack of true dynamic attacking power in the midfield – DDR’s WMD’s and Simone’s off-the-ball runs aside – I think the goals are going to come. Francesco was far from his perfect self on Tuesday but will almost surely show improvements as he regains match fitness. The defensive four and midfield will thrive once again, especially with a Bologna team whose long range snipers would love to have Frank Lampard’s right big toe. It may not be all about the aesthetics at the moment, but results will be just fine.
When: Saturday, 2030 local, 1430 EST.
Where: Renato Dall’Ara, Bologna.
Weather: 12°C, clear.
Streaming: Here.

The way you loved Cicinho this time last year?

I wasn’t aware of this site at the time, so I wouldn’t know what the big fuss about Cicinho was all about.
But quit running around Amico and tell us who…..

Same with Pauly, didn’t know if this site’s existence until late last season and didn’t start posting ’til this summer. And I don’t think I ever loved Cici. I still think he’s a good player. Maybe not the best, but I think he brings a lot of positives to the team. Unfortunately he also brings several negatives.

One dimensional is still better than no dimensional. I would be pissed if we sent Menez out somewhere because it’s not like there is a good reason for him to be benched. Taddei is pretty awful on the ball as well as Perrotta. I would like to see Taddei given a run at right back actually.
The menez thing seems like bullshit. Riise, sure, Cicinho, probably, but Menez has been solid when played. He has played with heart as well, and like I said, it’s not like we have a good excuse to not play him. Spalletti is just giving him the new guy treatment.

Menez sold? He is your best hope for the future on an aging team

Ale, Juve have resilience and a consistent winning mentality. They know how to dig in, and that is how they have won in the past no matter the personnel.
Manninger is also a starter on most teams. If you had to go from Buffon to Bozo the clown instead of Alex Manninger, you would be in a similar situation to Roma.

I’m not saying Mexes or Juan is on the level at their position as Buffon is at his, but Bozo the Clown and Loria are of the same quality of center back. Maybe Pie throwing would positively impact Loria’s game.

I truly believe that the new guy treatment is pure BS. If the player has it, then play him. If he can contribute, then put him in. If he needs experience, then throw him in the fire.
I’d say, let’s fight the fight trying with Menez (and let’s not forget Okaka Chucka) rather than the obvious unworthy players that we have, eh?

Btw, I will be the first one to jump on Maro tomorrow for just playing with us and not giving us an answer to what who he thinks. The guy is a nut with those damm evasive propositions that he throws out to us and then just leaves…..let’s straighten him up tomorrow.

Nobody is arguing with that Pauly. Okaka has been great when played, excluding his knack for getting offsides like he’s Pippo Inzaghi, and Menez busts his ass and has the confidence and skills to get it done. Spalletti just tends to whiff tactically a lot, but this sunday wasn’t one of those days. He had Menez up and ready to go until Doniber was hurt. I think he should have sent Menez on 10 minutes later because subbing Totti out to give him a rest for 5 minutes is retarded.

zack, well damn…..I agree 100%.

Yes, 5 min is retarded. Menez should have been in at least at half. What Bologna threw at midfield might have been broken by his runs. The end of that game was just about the most disappointing that I can recall. From being a patient on the way to recovery we are back in fevered and feverish state. Alas, poverini

Is it me or has Spal not made any substitutions, none, when the 2nd half begins. Even he the offense needs obvious offensive power, his illustrious subs seem to happen around the 75th minute and beyond. Now, isn’t that just a tactical deficiency?
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

just a random thought while watching Barca TV on FSC.
I have watched pretty much all the Barca games this season. We will probably not hear it even as sleep-talking from the english “pundits” on Sky and FSC- but if you had to call a team the best on the planet right now, Barca is the most credible choice. They want us to think it has to be an epl club- Chelski, or Lvpool, specifically. But the way Barca have been playing most games, not just the style but also simply blowing away opposing teams, they are in the best form. So much for the pretty-footie revolution in London, Barca are the real deal.Posted from

on Spal’s substitutions, I havent viewed him as a risk-taker for the most part. Even in games that are not going well. He almost always errs on the side of caution (read, out-of-form oldies with limited upside vs newbies-who-could-make-things-happen-or-not). For all his tactical awareness, he has a tendency to keep on the known elements for as long as he can- not substitute them at HT to even send a message. For eg, we all observed that there are games when Vuci is OFF. If not for tactical reasons, he could put Vuci more on his toes by making his spot more competitive, using Menez as an early sub. Bottomline is that there will be some like DDR, Mexes etc who are fighters- they always try, and dont need a kick you-know-where. But, others like Vuci, while talented do not have the same appetite for fight- they need to be kept on their toes.

yeah mimo, barca is pretty damn good. every time they came forward they looked like they were going to score and when they didn’t i was surprised. it’ll be interesting to see how they do against villareal and real madrid.

Mimo: You’ve seen all of the Barca games?….you have been lucky girl, cause that team is, on fire (sul fuoco!)
I reckon that Barca is not only the best in the world as well, they absolutely thrash every team on their path, but that LA LIGA is far far superior the the epl. La liga is the best league in the world.
My team is Villareal. I love the yellow submarines, and I’m sure you already know, but they are the only udefeated team in all of football and 1 point below Barca.

Well mimo, Spalletti’s conservativeness is BS. How much would cost him, or hurt him, to introduce some fresh legs into the system at halftime, or soon after that…..Disonore!
