Roma v Genoa: Cliffs Notes Preview
By: chris | April 4th, 2008
I’ll miss the game and be gone much of the weekend, so I’ll set up a discussion thread directly after the game and I’ll let you guys do your usual wrap ups. And if the first runaround in Genoa is any indication, I may be glad that I’ll be missing this one.
This game has nothing to do with form or paper lineups or any of that jazz - it has to do with response. Over the past week Roma has succumbed to a devastating amount of poor luck. First in Sardininia, when Matteo Ferrari placed a perfect ball past Doni and Marco Storari had the game of his life; allowing Roma to take home a completely dominant one point. Then Tuesday they lost to ManU despite outplaying them for much of the game and deserving at the very least a portion of the spoils. At the very least this must be mentally distressing. At the most it’s mind altering, momentum stopping, heart shattering and confidence killing. Thus they have to show up both mentally and physically on Saturday.
This match will also be about who’s there and who ain’t. Yes, Francesco Totti is out, but Mirko Vucinic is more than capable of slotting in for him - despite not being to Totti’s level (though who is). But making their way back will be Juan and Simone Perrotta, a good sign at the very least for the impending “I need a miracle” second leg on Wednesday. David Pizarro is suspended and the aforementioned fuckhead Ferrari is going under the knife and will miss 2-3 weeks for a meniscus issue. We may have seen his last game in the jersey, and that last game may have been Cagliari. What a way to drop a turd on the front lawn before exiting the party.
Regardless of who plays they have to respond and they have to respond victoriously. Still only four points.
Standings
1. Inter 68
2. Roma 64

Difensori: 3 Bovo, 18 Criscito, 25 De Rosa, 23 Ghinassi, 16 Lucarelli, 24 Konko.
Centrocampisti: 8 Danilo, 29 Fabiano, 28 Juric, 7 Rossi, 68 Vanden Borre.

Probable XIs
Doni;
Cassetti, OMR, Mexes, Tonetto;
DDR, Aquilani;
Taddei, Perrotta, Mancini;
Vucinic.
Back line I suppose is the question. Juan was called up but he absolutely has to play Wednesday with Mexes suspended and Ferrari getting the own goal homing device taken out of his knee, so will Spal risk yet another injury with this damn foot issue refusing to go away? Cassetti or Cicinho? I don’t know. My gut says Cicinho, therefore I’ll put Cassetti in there so that I can’t go wrong. Giuly for a start perhaps? Or just plenty of minutes off the bench? Questions questions.
* - Philou is not actually suspended. Regardless, risking Juan is still a, um, risk. Yeah, a risk.
Genoa:
Rubinho;
Konko, Bovo, Criscito;
Rossi, Milanetto, Juric, Fabiano;
Leon, Borriello, Sculli.
Last Game

Mancini Give-A-Shit Factor: 6.5

Ugliest victory I’ve seen in a while. I’ll remember this one.
It’s like in pro wrestling when some guy kicks the other guy’s ass, then gloats to the crowd for two minutes while the other guy recovers, then nearly hits his finisher.
Except that calcio is real. And I miss Tubbs on the back line.

“There was also bad news for De Rossi, as he reached 13 bookings for the season. That means from now on he’ll be suspended at every single yellow card rather than waiting for two.”

Inter have run away on depth the last few years, but they have ZERO mettle … they will melt looking at the table now.
I hope Langella devastates them …

If Atalanta knocks Inter off their perch, I’ll be typing “grazieeeeeeeeeeeee” tomorrow in my best fake Bergamo accent.

A few weeks ago I said that the Inter-Atalanta game would decide Romas faith.

Well done.
I dont want Mancini to play anymore I hate his body language and no passion. At the final whistle he had the ball and the camera on him, he didnt even smile, while De Rossi was screaming like a madman a la Gattuso.
Does any of you know any nice pubs open on wednesday evening in Manchester for Mancini? (Pizarro, Doni, Cassetti and Panucci can join him too, as far as I am cocerned)

“Spalletti, Manchester will be difficult, no?”
“Difficult? I think you should realize it is more than difficult.”He’s snapping at everyone … hopefully he headbutts Mancini after the interview

Dear Mancini,
If you are going to play as if you are C. Veiri and do no running while waiting to recieve passes. . . get the FUCK off this team. You are a winger. . . who used to be a RB, do the dirty work like everyone else. Plus, leave the FK to DDR . . . take a fucking walk. You played like shit, and best of yet . . .you still do not have a contract. I will take VUCI on the wing over you even if he had 1 leg!!GRAZI DDR, FORZA ROMA “THIS IS OUR YEAR” (CHRIS)
P.S.–> On RAI there was a shot of TOTTI covering his face during the penalty. . . god I love HIM, he wants this SO BAD!Posted from

I’m glad I missed the result.. Saw it at 2-0 and then at 3-2.. I would’ve been emotionally crushed and drained if it went to 2-2. Watching the game now.. Mirko’s goal was amaaazing.. game was pretty boring so far..

Vucinic’s strike was one of the goals of the year. He gets better every match.The rest of the game, well, what can you say? Roma survived. Credit to DeRossi for keeping cool and converting the kick. Roma has the talent to beat anyone, including United. But they lack the composure. That’s why the Red Devils will likely advance without much ado on Tuesday. I Lupi have to throw everything into the league and win out. Inter will drop more points; we can’t.
