Roma Frozen: Chivu To Play Out Contract

By: chris | July 11th, 2007

780106737_d5f3b42ac0_m.jpgNo Inter. No Real. No Barcelona. One more year of Roma.

(Paraphrasing: Chivu has done massive harm to the club. He’ll start camp with the club on Sunday. He’ll play out his contract which runs out at the end of next season. Inter and Spain are no longer options.)

I wonder what Trigoria will be like. He’s obviously well-liked amongst his teammates, but Totti IS Roma and Chivu has done irreparable harm to the club and team by forcing them to lose out on his sale. Prade noted this in that first sentence. Obviously much of the blame will go to the Becali brothers, but Chivu is a big boy and it’s his signature that goes on the contract, not his agent’s. I also wonder how much of his refusal to answer his teammate’s calls at the beginning of the summer will factor into his treatment. He obviously thought he would be sent away. Seems like those are his true colors.

Personally, I hope Totti freezes him out of the locker room and Spalletti forces him to train alone. If he must play, use him sparingly on the left in Coppa matches unless there is an injury. The basis behind Spalletti’s team ideologies has always been more of a team concept, irregardless of individual talent (outside Il Capitano). This team revolves around We, not I. Spalletti wants nothing to do with selfish players, he’s made that clear on many occasions. Chivu obviously does not have Roma at heart, he has money at heart. If Spalletti holds true to his claims of the selfish players having no place at Roma, then Chivu has seen his last minute on the senior squad.

If he does play, he might as well walk onto the pitch with a Biancocelesti uniform on. As far as I’m concerned, he’s worse than Laziale now. I hope the Romanisti make life in la citta eterna a living hell for him. I hope the fans boo every time he touches the ball. I hope Roma buys up Fred for training “accidents.” I hope somebody hangs an Inter jersey in his locker on August 18th. I hope nobody talks to him in the locker room. I hope he completely loses form as a result of the controversy and loses out on his big Inter contract. I won’t go as far as to wish serious injury on the man (I use that term loosely), but if it should happen, I wouldn’t shed a single tear.

I also hope that Roma now reports Massimo Moratti to FIFA, in unison with Massimo Cellini and anyone else who might have been slighted at the hand of Inter. His conversations with the Becali brothers have obviously set the bar for Chivu’s demands, and without those, he likely would be in Madrid right now, getting ready for La Liga. Something has to be done about this, it’s not an option, it’s a necessity. It’s one thing to lose out on a few million (Suazo, Emerson), but it’s an entirely different matter when the club loses out on 18m to the benefit of their direct rival. A Mexes-like embargo is a bit far-fetched, but some sort of sanctions absolutely have to be imposed on Moratti. The Calciopoli scandal hurt Serie A’s image vastly, they need to start repairing that image by cracking down on any infractions. Then again, this is Lega Calcio, this may be a daydream.

Obviously, this could change – but I believe this is what Moratti wanted. He didn’t want to throw away big money on a transfer fee, he’d rather use the same defense as he did last year and wait until next summer to sign Chivu. The options in Spain are gone. Nobody else wanted him for various reasons, and Inter has withdrawn. The only remaining option, barring another team of Chivu’s liking coming in with any type of bid (at this point, half the asking price would probably do it), is if he starts having second thoughts and decides to sign an extension. Possible? Anything is. Plausible? Absolutely not.

The tears, the celebrations, the passionate musings of life as Romanista, they were all a lie. Chivu has obviously forgotten the most important thing here: It’s not a right to put on the Giallorossi uniform, it is a privilege and honor.

Forza Roma

Now that it looks likely that Chivu will be staying in Rome for the upcoming season, Spalletti and co. have to decide what to do with him. Sadly, this might be the most important choice that il Mister has to make all year.

A lot of us romanisti are advocating that Chivu gets the Cassano treatment or worse — left off the rosa, made to ride the bench with the primavera squad, training alone, etc. But unless Chivu’s presence is seriously affecting the atmosphere in the locker room (which it may), would that in any way be beneficial to the team? I think that all that would do would be to make every player in Europe look at Roma and say, ‘That’s what happens to you there?’ and cross it off their list of potential teams to play for. Yeah, what Chivu did was crawling in the dirt low, but it’s not unprecedented. And there are also lots of different opinions on the matter, especially those of non-romanisti, the category that, believe it or not, constitutes most of our future players. I want to be petty and vindictive, I really do, but I don’t think that sending Chivu into exile within the training walls is the best thing for the club. I say that he gets put on the bench as a rarely-used sub. At least until some kind of accord within the squad is reached.

Hopefully Rosella will be able to back Moratti into a corner and this won’t be a problem.

On a completely unrelated note, did anyone else ever notice that the team massager is 76 years old?

Your awful image of the day everyone. You’re welcome.

I hope we freeze him out of the first and second teams completely, dont give him even a single minute in serie a or coppa preffering some youth guy like freddi, and we should take his no 13 and give it to someone else, and give him 00, 1 whole year without first team football and we’ll see which of the Becali’s gest him 5mn an year

I agree Charlie, but I think the determining factor here is that Chivu has put Internazionale FC, a direct rival, in front of AS Roma. That much is clear.

Spalletti won’t stand for that – this team has become successful under the team concept. I think one of two things will happen. One, it might be decided amongst the squad. But I doubt it.

I wrote about this for tomorrow, but I honestly think Spalletti will sit down with Totti and possibly De Rossi to decide what happens. This is their team and their opinions are valued quite highly (De Rossi because of his future captaincy as well as great friendship with Chivu). Or maybe a summit of “elders”? (Totti, De Rossi, Mexes, Panucci, Perrotta)

I say sit him against the mid-low teams and park him on the bench for the tough games, use him in case of emergency – kill his game. Juan is a quality replacement and he needs to form a bond with Mexes anyway. They’re the future.

The other flip-side of your argument is what does it say to current Roma players if they act like nothing happened? That you can just walk all over Roma? I think it makes a statement that this club is not to be fucked with anymore.

And Usman, Chivu could’ve had his money anywhere else. But he cheated so that he can get it from a rival. That’s low and that’s bullshit. Esp after his claims of being Romanista.

    * – It also looks like this is headed to a legal matter now from reports. This isn’t over by a long shot.

Well, I think it is quite obvious. Inter offered Chivu more than they were willing to pay him so that no one would match them, then lowballed Roma so that we would not accept. That way he would not be sold nor would he sign an extension. Quite frankly, I won’t be the least bit surprised when Inter try to sign him for far less than they promised next season. Quite shrewd to be honest if they get away with it. They quite possibly poisened their direct scudetto rivals’ lockerroom while keeping him away from their CL rivals. They never intended to sign him this year….

i agree with last roman we should destroy his career making him sitting on bench all year and it will prevent inter paying him 5 millions a year. so he will become player noone needs so he his creer will be ruined. you know this is revenge – the dish that must be served cold))). Because all other solutions will give us nothing but paying him 18 millions for one fucking season and in this way we can at least show him that noone needs him.

Regarding the indignation about his “I’m Romanista for life.” Footballers know it’s a lot smarter to say stuff like that than to say “Eh, you know. I like getting paid, so I could leave.”

There are the rare players at every club who actually mean it when they declare their love, but Chivu is FAR from the only person to say the right things about the club for which he plays, only to try to leave. His problem is that it fell apart and he now has to face teammates and fans; usually the ones who have the nerve to be “disloyal” don’t have to answer to anything because they’re long gone.

I’m not at all for trying to sweep this under the rug and having everyone related to the club run around with their eyes close and hands over their ears all year. Some kind of punitive measures are absolutely necessary; I just don’t think the leave-him-off-the-rosa-and-draw-penises-on-his-face-while-he’s-asleep route is the one to go. (No, no, I take that second part back. That’s definitely the way to go.) I fully agree that this is a matter that needs to be left up to Spalletti and the boys. (Not that people like us have any say, but I’m just sayin’ for argument’s sake.) Ditto for the Juan-Mexes bond.

I worry that as much as this hurts the team financially, it’ll hurt them on the field even more. This is lining up to be the toughest Serie A campaign in years and the last thing we need is a huge distraction like this one. I hope that there’s legal action and that Moratti gets his, but I don’t think that Roma can hope for an outcome that’s anything better than mediocre any more. This sort of thing seems to be what Roma is contiunally destined to suffer through. But I wouldn’t cheer for any other shirt.

Charlie, I just wrote a post about this that involved drawing things on his face. No lie. And if we’re both thinking of it, you KNOW Mexes is. Oh, to be a fly on the Roma wall next season …

I sincerely hope Roma do make an example out of this situation, like signing promising players to long term contracts before some becali-esque agent steps in. I clearly remember, when Chivu,Mexes and Mancini were linked with moves away from the club , Chivu was the first to declare his “commitment” to the club, his roman heart and all bullshit,Cant we send him on loan to Treviso this year??

Whatever our financial status may be, I think it is NECESSARY that we buy a LB (Modesto?) and a 4th CB. We can NOT rely on Chivu for anything. First, what if a transfer is agreed to right before the deadline? Then we are screwed once again with no depth at those positions. What if the decision is made to play Chivu but at some point in the season it becomes apparent to Spalletti that having him around does more harm than good? We can NOT give Chivu the power to screw us again. We MUST be prepared and covered. Hey, if we get a Modesto and cheap 4th CB and it turns out that Chivu is a valuable contributor next season, great! We spent an extra 3-4 million and we have great depth. But this way, we are covered and will not be screwed again if this saga takes another turn. That being said, I’m pretty sure our management will not buy anybody for those positions and will overly rely on Chivu.

After this morning’s headline on ilromanista, I think the Rosella’s should dump him for whatever they can.

At this point they are not going to get any money next summer and Chivu will only be a distraction during the season (both in the locker room and amongst the fans). They fucked up…take the loss and move on. I would not be surprised if the Ultras or i tifosi hurt Chivu this season with a sharp projectile from the curva sud.

Only way Chivu should see the pitch this year is if he mans up and signs a contract extension worth the exact same contract as Mexes (or less.) Only then will he be able to come close to regaining face and not losing his life in Roma.

BTW: I can’t wait for the banners in Curva Sud. I hope they embarass the hell out of Chivu.

I agree, there’s no way Curva Sud would stand for it if he’s allowed on the pitch. Spalletti has maintained all along he does not want selfish players on his squad. Something will be done about this, no question.

An optimistic spin: This is a shrewd counter-tactic by Roma. All power had shifted to Chivu, Becali Bros and Inter after their interest in each other was made public and Real’s offer rejected. Inter, alone now at the table, was able to halve their bid. Rejecting that, saying Chivu stays, shifted the rules again. Roma leveraged back (some) control.

Negotiations are not over. This is the midway point. And given all the manipulations by the 3 other parties (CBB&I), I’d say Roma just made the best move they could.

It’s not a bluff. They needed to be willing to lose Chivu on a free next summer. But at least they haven’t played CBB&I’s game. Let’s see what the next 6 weeks bring.

I agree with your sentiments, Ant.

I also believe Inter doesn’t really want him this year. They wanted to lock up his signature for next summer. They can certainly do well in Serie A & the CL without him. Now they can throw that transfer fee at someone else.

But this isn’t over, that’s for sure.

I agree with you that Roma made their best negotiation move by saying Chivu was staying…however, I think Moratti just wants to embarass AS Roma at this point and will not sign him until a free transfer next summer.

I hope I am wrong and that the two sides agree on something this summer. If not, hopefully Chivu becomes a fat bastard from no playing time and too much pasta.

If he plays, I’m waiting che qualche petardo lanciato da un ultra nella curva sud scopia davanti la testa di chivu durante la prima gara, com’e’ sucesso a Gattuso nell’ulima gara tre anni fa.

Wait for the video on youtube

I just want it to be 1 September so transfer season is over and I can be at peace, no matter what the results end up being. I’m not sure I can take the rest of the summer. At least BoSOx are up by 10 game, otherwise I’d be a total wreck.

I’m gonna listen to “Grazie Roma” now and quietly cry.

Chivu…Chivu…Chivu…I am from Romania and I am very, very disappointed. He is the shame of our entire nation. From being an example to us, NOW HE IS JUST A BAG OF TRASH!
Months ago he declared that money means nothing compare to the ambitions and potential of the club. Well, I have to agree that Roma has the ambition, but fairly no potential or resources of Real and Barca. But Chivu wanted more. Unfortunately, he wanted MORE MONEY from Inter. It was never about trophies and glory. IT WAS ABOUT MONEY!
I can’t wait for news from Trigoria on Sunday. Being the bitch he was last weeks he is not going to look good in the lockeroom. Shame on him and I hope he will be sent out to The Netherlands, but this time to play for Sparta Rotterdam.
