Roma Acquires French Pocket Rocket
By: chris | July 17th, 2007(Before I go ahead and make it official - everybody cool with officially calling him ‘The Pocket Rocket’? Because he’s small, he’s fast and he’ll undoubtedly give us short bursts of pleasure. Get back to me.)
So, it looks fairly official, after the on-and-off rumors between Barcelona and Roma, Ludovic Giuly will be announced within the next 24 hours as an official Roma player. He is in Rome as we speak getting ready for Trigoria and the Beckham-like festivities of his inaugural Roma press conference. The deal was reportedly for €3m with an additional €2m being paid to Barcelona should Roma make the Champions League next season. Apparently Barca had Jean-Michel Aulas negotiating on their behalf. Giuly will make €1.7m per season and will ink a 3 year contract, at the end of which he’ll be 34. However, I’m not sure he’ll be around that long. He wants to return to France, and it seemed a nostalgic return to France was his preference, but Monaco wouldn’t pay up for him. Oh well. Still a quality move on very very short money. And I really hope Roma has to fork out that extra €2m for him next year (they’ll figure any way to make sure things aren’t simply cut and dried, won’t they?).
For anyone who doesn’t know about Giuly, he’s a short (1.64m/5′5 - very generously), fast winger/midfielder/second striker who has played the last few years with Barca, after being a superstud in Monaco’s CL Final run. He played a sizable part in Barca’s CL success two years ago, so let’s hope this is a continuing trend. As we all know the CL Final is being held at Stadio Olimpico in ‘09 and the last time Rome held the final (1983), Roma was one of the participants. Good juju. Unfortunately, it looks like Roma is building a team of international rejects, as he is firmly entrenched in Raymond Domenech’s doghouse - although that typically means you’re a damn good player. The reported reason for his lack of recent caps is that he supposedly sent text messages of a romantic interest to Raymond Domonech’s slut wife, which is not exactly a new thing with her (which I don’t get, she’s got a massive schnoz). I guess he earns a couple points in my book for that. At least Mexes will have a buddy to talk shit about Domenech with now, while Mancini and Taddei cry in the corner over Dunga’s apparent misconception that he was hired to coach the U-21 squad instead of the senior Selecao. Maybe Taddei isn’t the type of player to be on Brazil’s roster regularly, but he undoubtedly deserves one cap in his career. Mancini, however, should be on that roster more often than not.
I’ll be the first to admit that I have a personal bias against Ludovic, and that I have no idea what it stems from, I’ve just never liked him. But I’ve also admitted that I felt like he would be a quality addition to the squad, but have wondered if it is somewhat unnecessary considering the limits of Roma’s budget. He’s a speedy runner, with dynamic bursts to goal and brings a shift in the opposition’s defensive philosophy when on the pitch, but isn’t that essentially what Mauro Esposito provides? Obviously Mauro is more of a pure winger, whereas Ludovic provides more versatility, but I would still like to see someone come in who was able to head in one of those crosses coming from the wing (yes, this means Roque Santa Cruz, who I will be fighting Gianfranco to the death over). Also, I would’ve liked to have seen someone who is a leap in class from Esposito and Taddei, rather than someone who has relatively the same level of ability. A lot of non-Romanista and people who don’t watch Taddei will say Giuly is far ahead of him, but Taddei is one of the most valued and important members of the team. He has those sick futsal abilities but plays within himself and the system and doesn’t go crazy unless he has to (See: Olympiakos). Esposito scored 16 from the wing. I don’t care what anybody says, that’s not a fluke. You have to have serious talent to do that even over just one season.
My main worry for Giuly is his age (31) and the fact that so much of his game relies on his legs, and we all know one of the first things to go with players is the speed. I think that once his huge acceleration starts to fade so will a lot of his effectiveness, but I will also admit I didn’t get to see much of his at Barcelona this season, so I’m not exactly his foremost expert. My original thought is that Giuly will be used as that burst of speed off the bench in the second half when defenses start to get tired and he can really be effective. However, I would imagine Trigoria will see significant competition from Taddei, Giuly, and Esposito. I suppose two will platoon on the right mostly with one earning the back-up duties behind Mancini. Giuly can also provide more options playing just behind Totti or even subbing in for Perrotta, so he may be primarily used as a change-of-pace sub and spot starter in case of injury or when Spalletti feels like he is the right option to exploit an opposing defense. Is he the difference over a whole season? Highly doubtful. But can he make a massive difference over the course of a few games? Absolutely. (Ahem, CL)
Wherever he does play, it’s obvious that the class of depth has increased considerably this season on the wings. Esposito is a much more effective player than Christian Wilhelmsson, and while Francesco Tavano is talented, he was playing out of position - a major problem for a few people at times last season. This versatility being brought in with Ludovic should be a big boost to the squad and Spalletti when he’s making out his roster. Also, he didn’t really cost all that much so it’s a fairly good risk-reward venture for Rosella. And if he can be valuable to Roma, then I will be putting personal biases aside and waving the Ludovic Giuly flag high. Though you can be assured I’ll have plenty of low blows regarding his height. I won’t be able to help myself.
The Requisite Internet Highlight Videos:
Definitely watch these if just to see why Barcelona signed him in the first place. He was an absolute demon for Monaco and was a big reason for their CL run until they ran into ‘The Special One’ and Porto in the final. And if you can’t tell which one he is, he’s the one who looks like a pre-schooler running by everyone. Also, let’s hope that he adopts Totti’s thumb-sucking celebration, I’m not sure I can handle him jumping into David Pizarro’s arms (if that did ever happen, you can be assured of a joke regarding Pizarro, Giuly and a homosexual midget convention in Las Vegas - that is if I don’t die of laughter). That’s way too French for me. As were all the really homoerotic songs for Giuly compilations. Mexes was enough of France for me - even though he isn’t bad - this is just too much.
Despite the insanely homoerotic feel of this video, Giuly had some sick goals for Monaco. I’ll go wherever you will go, Ludovic. (Hit mute now, trust me)
Giuly at Barca, much much better music selection. This guy must be a hero to all aspiring athletes 5′7 and under. I’ve never seen more homosexual overtures for one player in my days as a Roma blogger/video researcher.
This goal is in the first compilation, but it really deserves its own video. Just an unbelievably phenomenal goal.
Homoerotic celebrations galore. Christ. It’s going to be a long year.
Also, if you hadn’t noticed, he likes to open up his mouth real wide. Which Laurie, the offside’s resident Mom, will point out is also laced with homosexual innuendo. This signing is just one big fruit-fest. I feel like I should be wearing assless chaps and listening to Coldplay.
* - The last two battles of the GHD Round 2 (including Totti) will come a bit later as well as the rest of today’s news, notes and useless nonsense.

great signing. like i’ve said before, he is a “name” player. when its time for someone to come off the bench in an important game it’ll be giuly instead of wilhelmson. the opposing sides defence will surely think twice about giuly whereas when wilhelmson would play they would laugh, like the manchester united game.
santa cruz would be great too, no doubt.

That picture has to get some sort of honorable mention in the GHD.

I agree on the Mancini, especially with the guys that were out there.

I’d like to offer a dissent and suggest that we forgo the rhyme convention of ‘pocket rocket’ in preference to the elegantly alliterative ’supersouris’.

Ethan, we’re trying to get less French here. Get with the program. However, if I somehow become a fan then we might go with Mighty Mouse, and you’ll get credit.
G, I’ll get him into the former players GHD eventually. I just hope I can find pics of him in a Jets uni.

Your bias stems from the fact that he is French, we are American, and we are suppose to distrust and despise the French, its in our nature.
Out of all the players on Roma (3 excluding Juan) that should be in the selecao, Doni is the least deserving and Mancini the most, but Taddei isnt far off either. Dunga was suppose to pick the players on form, but he picks Elano, he has not been impressive for the past year, and Vagner Love, who for all his hard work, grit and occasional flash of inspiration, wont score goals. Brazil is their own worst enemy right now with that coach.

Thanks for the “Resident Mom” comment. CPS hordes are amassing outside my door as we speak. Just remember that I’m not the one nicknaming my players after sex toys.
On an utterly unrelated note, I found this fun translation to the song that I believe has taken up residence in our respective heads. It’s funny, because I speak French fairly well, but I was picking up only random words and phrases in this one. (Hangover? Yup, that I understood.) But no French classes in the world prepare you for phrases like, “like an Indian in his igloo.” So here’s the translation. http://www.david.gibbs.co.uk/plastic/plastic_lyrics.htm

You mean you weren’t taught “Bonjour, je m’appelle Laurie. Je suis comme un indien dans son igloo” on the first day?
What kind of a crap school did you go to?
Hey, at least my posts don’t reference bejeweled sex toys. I keep it simple and to the point. You obviously need to accentuate yours for some reason……

I know it lacks the pleasing sexual connotations of Pocket Rocket, but what the hell is wrong with Atomic Gremlin? God dammit.

Watching that “homoerotic celebrations” video: God is he French. Talk about drama queens. (People certainly do like to touch him, though. Perhaps that’s what drew the large-nosed woman to him.)

I’m glad that Barbie Mexi isn’t alone now that Ludo can keep him company.
Aside from bouts of whining, Ludo is a class move by Spalletti. He obviously wants a temporary solution, and Ludo will retire in France in two years or so, plus he gets to try out one more league.
BTW, Domenech blasted Faubert for going to West Ham. Called it a stupid move for him to go to a club outside the top four in the main Euroleagues (I guess he’s letting him know that he should have picked Roma).

I saw that regarding Domenech, but apparently he doesn’t show up in Rome either, or Mexes would me a mainstay.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt like it was a shot to him that the player he picked to wear the #10 so soon after Zizou signed for West Ham. Kinda makes him look like a fool (and French footy not so good).
Martha, I’m sure you could twist ‘Atomic Gremlin’ to have some innuendo in order to appease all parties.

Chris, you know for a fact that if a bejeweled sex toy were dropped in your lap you would…uh…um…
Wait, where was this thought going again?

what about “Atomic Epileptic Gremlin”? or does it need more bling, of the diamond-crusted variety?
Laurie: the only thing that drops in Chris’ lap are coked-up’n'trashed euro-trash models, usually of the eastern block persuasion… and sometimes an occasional Totti pic.

So how about that Giuly guy? Yeah….

I think part of the reason Mexes is having trouble nailing down a spot is because when Gallas and Thuram are healthy, and with Abidal and Escude both able to play in dual roles, he only needs to call up one back up central defender. I’m guessing he can’t decide between Mexes and Squillaci for should pair with Gallas for Euro 2008 (though I think these two will eventually be France’s CB pairing for the WC).

Yeah. What Inara said.

Mexes certainly deserves to be on that squad yesterday, but I do think being on Lyon plays a large factor in Domenech’s selections. It’s hard to look at his squads and think otherwise. But I’ve often wondered if, as you mentioned, Mexes proclivity for cards (1:2.5) combined with the lack of CB depth is a big factor to RD. But then I look at half his other omissions and I realize that’d be giving him too much credit. He would be out of a job if not for his ability to recruit Thuram, Makelele and Zizou back for a curtain call.

Mexes’s absences are quite a debated topic among a lot of French fans.
While you’re correct in that playing for Lyon does help a player get Domenech’s attention (it helps when the players are familiar with each other), Squillaci has been getting caps since he was with Monaco and has a few more than Mexes I believe.
I think Mexes is like a really hot mistress that is exciting and can spice things up with never before seen moves on her good days while being downright aggravating on her bad days, whereas Squillaci is like the boring, reliable wife at home who won’t excite you but won’t forget to put dinner on the table either. And like any indecisive man, Domenech can’t choose.
Mexes has the advantage of playing in a more competitive league and comes across more talented players. Squillaci’s advantages are that he is very effective in his job while also being very clean (he didn’t get a single yellow card this entire past season and only one red card in his entire career).
Also, other than Sebastian Frey, Domenech hasn’t been choosing players out of Italy this past year. I guess he doesn’t like Italy

My vision of France has always been more of a smooth, tactically efficient NT, without a lot of sex and vigor. Philippe obviously has a style similar to the last two, while Squillaci is closer to the former. It could be a tactical preference, but it’s still hard to discount someone of Mexes’ caliber. I do believe he has to be in line for more caps soon, especially if RD steps down after Euro 2008. But who knows. For some reason it’s a common theme amongst all the prospective internationals in Rome these days. Even De Rossi hasn’t been first choice for Donadoni lately. I wonder if Spalletti’s all-out (unique) attacking philosophy hurts them. Though one would think that would put Mancini on the Selecao regularly. It really is a head-scratcher and I can’t seem to find any explanation whatsoever. Plenty of theory, but nothing concrete.
I came across a message board one day that was debating the proposed acquisition of a player (think it was Liverpool with a decent player). Somebody made the argument that he wasn’t worth it because he wasn’t an international regular in the starting XI. Then he said name one person who is elite that doesn’t play for their country, first few answers were Mexes. At least someone realizes it.

Dunga makes weird choices. He keeps on choosing Vagner Love. So he’s probably excluding Mancini just because he feels like it, not because the player is good or not. Corey was right when he said Brazil is their own worst enemy.

He had fairly good games in 06-07 when he did play, and the legs are definitely still there, although he gets tired around the 75 min mark. Doesn’t complain much about being benched, you’ll be glad to know.
Also: I approve of ‘Pocket Rocket’ very much. That describes the (on pitch) Giuly experience entirely.
