Return of L’aeroplanino
By: chris | April 28th, 2008
I have probably two-thirds of a post written, but when I hit the news that Vincenzo Montella might make his long-awaited return to the Blucerchiati this weekend after shredding his knee in November, I lost most of my night watching old videos (I’d be afraid to admit how often this happens). Scratch that, not a moment lost.
I’ll keep it simple: I’d kill for Roma to pick up another Montella this summer. Absolutely kill for it. An Italian striker with a penchant for striking daggers into the hearts of the burini that fans can latch onto and love for years upon years? It’s something you’d shave a few years off the end of your life for. Unfortunately, it’ll be many moons before we see another L’aeroplanino, if ever. They come along only once in a generation.
While it’s still not a return to the Olimpico, I can’t imagine how it’ll feel to see Vincenzo on the same pitch as Roma, donning blue and white instead of red and yellow. As strange as it may be, I hope it happens and I hope he puts one past Doni (as long as Roma puts two past Samp). And for all his Giallorosso love, leaving the potential he’d refuse to celebrate, nothing would please me more than seeing the wings.
And someday, somehow…maybe we could see those wings one more time in giallorosso (yes, I’m still in denial).
This is going to be the best ten minutes of your day, guaranteed:
Grazie Vincenzo

I am with you SGM … the budget will be released tomorrow. I wonder how much we will have for the summer mercato

i am still not sure what foreign investment will mean for italy. are england and italy really comparable in their football talent? No. Italy has repeatedly produced class, technically supreme world beaters. then why will foreign investment kill local talent? yes, there will be more foreign talent. but will it not mostly be an upgrade of foreign talent already in serie A? maybe a bit more. but italian players r good, so why will foreign owners not want them? I am not sure at all if foreign ownership will have the same impact in italy that it does on english football.

I don’t think foreign investment will make us like Chelsea.. I think we’ll just be on par with Inter, Milan and Juventus spending wise. But Inter and calciopoli aside, I don’t think those teams have lost their identities or the passion surrounding their teams.

Italian grassroot football is producing serious talent whereas this cannot be said for the English youth system so they need to import to replace where in Italy it is not a necessity but a choice.

Who read that story about Ronaldo and transvestites? hahaha.. Serves him right..

gabby, this is prob a stupid question. they will release the budget, but i dont get how the takeover thing affects this. there is still a chance of a takeover, so the budget will change accordingly, right?

Ale,
Roma will NEVER EVER become like Man U or Chelski…

yes, i agree abt the grassroots talent. foreign ownership has led to rich epl clubs buying some of the world’s best players. the key being *best players*. england grassroot talent is just not good enough, so to build winning teams they are forced to shop abroad. I dont see tht happening in italy. imagine this– if roma gets a big budget for transfers, will the roma management suddenly want only foreign players on their team? It is surely not a conincidence that top epl teams also dont have english management.

one thing that will definitely not change with foreign owners in serie a is the wealth of italian world-class coaches who understand the italian game.

if the take over happens there will be a new budget.
anyway I think Italian coaches prefer Italian talent most of the time in the big 4-5-6 as well except for Inter.

Scholes might be one of the greats of English football for the past 15 years but that really is not saying much.. I’m sure he deserves more praise than that..
But again.. Comparing him to Totti is just ridiculous. Totti is one of the greats of ITALIAN football of all time! Amongst legends like Baggio, Zola, Paolo Rossi, Del Piero, etc…
Anyway.. While I don’t like Scholes much, I do respect him a lot. Scholes, Giggs, G. Neville, Maldini, Raul, Del Piero, Totti.. Not many like them in this world.

James Richardson “He [Inzaghi] is one of the many 30 somethings year olds who are crowding around Donadoni saying “can I come, can I come” for the Euro 2008 shindig”.. hahahaha.. that’s great.

Messi has to be the most exciting player in football. His feints and cuts are sublime. Too bad he was the only player Manchester had to worry about and couldn’t finish his half chances, but good god is he a pleasure to watch on the ball. It reminds me of the days when Figo was in his prime where defenders would wet themselves.

Does anyone think Soros will come back and buy Roma
or is it over.Guess good players this year, maybe in another 10 years.I have grown depressed and cant see this team going anywhere ,no matter how much i love them, its the truth.Whats worse now is stupid man utd is in the final, man does this suck.Posted from

I personally believe Soros is doing what he can to get Roma for the price he wants. The Sensis have been jerked around before only to give way to the buyer (i.e. Cassano and Chivu recently, almost the entire scudetto team before that). I can’t see the sale of the club going swimmingly when we can’t sell a player or negotiate a contract without several rough patches. The Sensis are fucked in too many ways to turn down oppurtunities to get oxygen once again.
I still haven’t heard much about the apparent farewell speech, what the hell was that all about?

daniele, it’s a real concern of mine if roma gets taken over. roma wants silverware, rightfully so, after years of underachievement. but pouring money into the club to get that silverware might require selling your soul.
here was my comment, gabriella
In a dig at the EPL (and England), I might add that he is why I do not want massive foreign investment in Italy, a homegrown superstar player. We [Serie A] can compete without paying ridiculous transfer fees, and even if we couldn’t, I’d rather have idols like Alex than Champion’s League silverware. Some might point out ManUre have many homegrown players, but those days are long gone. There will never be a class of players like Giggs, Scholes, Neville, or Beckham in one English team. Look at some of their players today- Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani, and Hargreaves. I don’t like Berlusconi’s millions distorting the market, but I respect that there is a class of Milan players who are rossoneri to the core. [Pirlo, Gattuso, Ambrosini, Maldini, etc.]
And enjoy the fact that he [Del Piero] will be playing at Euro2008….and that Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Stevie Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand will not be.

I am kinda glad that Soros has¨”backed down” I want to see what the Sensi budget would be like…
I don’t think we need a huge budget anyways to be competitive next year, all we need are two strikers, Vargas and a Central defender…
Mancini could be traded to juve for two bench players Iaquinta and Palladino… they would be our new striker… both Italian and great players, capable of being world class. Iaquinta is just the striker we need and Palladino can be a winger, striker…
Vargas for 10 mill would be great, if we keep antunes and Tonetto he can play as a LW in a 4-4-2 and Perrotta can fight him for that spot as well as the RW against Taddei and Giuly…
Lucio for 6 mill would be an amazing signing…
Vucinic for 6 mill
with some 20 mill we could build an amazing squad for next year and play a more solid and compact 4-4-2 a la juve like this at the start of the season, considering Totti would be injured
————-Doni—–
Cicinho——Mexes–Juan——Tonetto
(Cassetti)(Panucci, Lucio, Andreolli)(Antunes)
Perrotta–De Rossi–Aquilani–Vargas
(Giuly) (Brighi, Pizarro) (Taddei, Cerci)
———Iaquinta–Vucinic———–
(Palladino, Totti, Okaka)I would LOVE to have this team, taking into consideration that Vucinic and Palladino can also play in the wings then we could make the formation much more offensive intruducing any of both in the wing, especially palladino that could be a regular winger once Totti recuperates. Leaving Totti and Iaquinta up front with Vucinic alternation starting spots with both of them…
we can all become real greedy very easily, but lest keep our feet on the ground and go after something like this, that could bring more success than this season once we have those strikers we lack!
I also look forward to bring back Cerci and Okaka and letting them fight for a spot in the team, I think they are ready and could surprise us next season…
Cerci on the wing and Okaka up front! I am really anxios to see that, i know they would work just fine!
also, look how far up Juve is with the team they have…
a suck ass defence with a crap midfield exept for the wingers…
Del Piero and Trezeguet with Nedved and Camoranesi have been carrying that team…
Totti, Iaquinta and our wingers could do the same with us, and we have a much better defence

I dont think at all that a buyout would mean selling your soul. All clubs run things differently, there is no saying what effect Soros would have, but Roma will always be Roma there is no doubt of that in my mind.

Budget for the summer mercato is 20 million. OK, so who we gonna get with that?
Posted from
Netherlands

@Johnny We’ll spend ~10m euros on Vucinic. sell mancini for 5m and we’ll have 15m euros to spend. So sad.

Oh only 20million if we finish second in the league.

20 million… that’s just fucking great! We’re gonna blow half that on a new left back? Are they nuts??? People were talking about how good it was that we progressed past Real in the CL because it probably meant extra funds for the mercato – would we have had 15 million euros if we had dropped out there? And how about the fact that we didn’t spend money this january to have more funds to buy class for in the summer… wow, a lot of class can be bought for 20 million!!! This sucks!

Hey, I would love to have 20million, when you have a half competent transfer director. We had 35mil or so, and look what happened, the only two transfers playing regularly were free transfers.
I do think it is a bit low for Roma though. 3 good transfers and you guys can challenge on both fronts. There’s a little too much pessimism in the Roma camp though……United just got lucky when they beat you. I was very impressed by Roma this year, beating Madrid at home and away? That’s something to write home about.
