Reggina: New Faces & No Faces.
By: chris | January 31st, 2009
Reggina v Roma
Indisponibili: Montella, Riise, Cassetti, Totti, Panucci, Baptista, Perrotta.
Wednesday. Mother#$%&ing Wednesday that thing was empty (minus Principessa Panucci & Vincenzo). This team is cursed. There’s really no other explanation.
However, the fact that…
a. The game is away.
b. Reggina is the most sucktastic team in Serie A.
….probably played some role in this. If this were Genoa at home I suspect the roster would look a slight bit different.
And this is how bad it is:
i. a guy they bought this morning – this fricken’ AM and will meet the team for the first time at the team hotel – is being forced into the squad because they have no fullback coverage….and he’s a CB by trade.
ii. Two players – Stefano Okaka Chuka (Triestina) and Leandro Greco (Pisa – aka Roma Lite Lite) – who will almost surely be going out on loan Sunday evening have been called into the squad because of a numbers problem. Without those two, Spalletti has a bench five deep. So the bench will feature Greco, Virga, Okaka, Filipe (who I have yet to see outside of his official team picture) and the new guy who will be briefed on team tactics and intricacies during bedcheck Saturday night. Epic.
Speaking of the guy they bought this AM….
Souleymane Diamoutene
Loan from Lecce for €150,000 with the option to buy outright at the end of the year for €3.15m.
Big, physical 26 year old Malian int’l (45 caps) who can play right back also but with a penchant for stupid mistakes – but also seemingly raw, and someone Spalletti might be able to mold into a fairly good centerback.
Right now, that’s that. It’ll take til Monday to determine how the team shakes out and where he fits in. If he’s replacing Loria – Spal basically described him as a younger Simone this morning – then this is probably a good move. If the backup centerbacks are Souley & Simone…..
I’ll be less than thrilled, let’s just say that.
However, he can pose for a mean picture.

Reggina
Remember back when Roma was utter garbage? Remember back when Roma trounced Reggina 3-0 while being utter garbage? Remember the last trip down south? (Hint: last weekend.)
Reggina are still garbage, Roma are not. Not quite sure it’ll be a cakewalk, but the Calabrians are on the fast track to Serie B and they’ll need a monumental upset to take points off the new-look Spalletti machine – injuries, weather (below) and all.
Squad
3 CICINHO
4 JUAN SILVEIRA DOS SANTOS
5 PHILIPPE MEXES
7 DAVID MARCELO CORTES PIZARRO
8 ALBERTO AQUILANI
9 MIRKO VUCINIC
11 RODRIGO FERRANTE TADDEI
14 FILIPE
15 SIMONE LORIA
16 DANIELE DE ROSSI
22 MAX TONETTO
24 JEREMY MENEZ
25 GUILHERME DE MORAIS GUSMAO ARTUR
27 JULIO SERGIO BERTAGNOLI
32 DONIEBER ALEXANDER MARANGON (DONI)
33 MATTEO BRIGHI
34 VALERIO VIRGA
36 LEANDRO GRECO
89 STEFANO OKAKA
Indisponibili: Montella, Riise, Cassetti, Totti, Panucci, Baptista, Perrotta.
Injuries
Francesco: Back, not the knee (giant sigh of relief….now).
Vincenzo: Shoulder
Julio: Shoulder muscle
Cassetti: Amputated leg (two months minimum – the things they can do with medicine these days, eh?)
Alberto: Stubbed toe, or something.
Riise: Knee contusion
Perrotta: Ankle
Nothing serious – Cassetti aside – but still worrying that the injury list is back to looking like roll call.
Projected XI
Doni
Cicinho, Mexes, Juan, Tonetto
Taddei, DDR, Brighi
Pizarro
Vucinic, Menez
Unsure if Aquilani or Menez will get the start, but it’s going to be one or the other and Alberto is a bit banged up (no surprise) and he also offers more options off the bench*. Now if you would please sit down and grab a bag in which to vomit…the bench:
Artur, Loria, Diamoutene, Aquilani, Virga, Filipe, Greco, Okaka.
That’s three – three! – outfield players who have seen minutes for Roma this season. Okaka once in the last three months, Bubble Boy and Loria, whose presence on the pitch is about as desirable as bird flu. Think it’s too early to start drinking? Only 17 hours til gametime.
* – So, of course, it’ll be Menez on the bench.
Predictions
Game: 1-0
Goals: Menez (54)
MOTM: Brighi
When: 1500 CET, 0900 EST.
Where: Stadio Oreste Granillo, Reggio Calabria.
Forecast: 14°C, 90% chance of rain – and the Granillo is not a pitch which deals well with wetness in any, way, shape or form. This one could get quite ugly quite quickly.
Streaming: In case you missed it midweek….
The important stuff: devastation in the streaming world.
Because of pending legal proceedings, Myp2p has removed all links in the following competions: Elitserien – SM-Liga – NHL – Swedish Allsvenskan – Italian Serie A – English Premier League – Dutch Eredivisie. Once a judgment has been given, we will notify you of the outcome.
So we are rerouted. Bet365 works if you live in Europe – and anywhere but the US, I believe (it does, however, require a free account). Roja Directa has some backup options. But the best option will presumably be the one most of us use every week: Atdhe.net.

Actually, Spal often switches between 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-1-2.
“old favourite players like Loria”.
You’re kidding, right? His problem about motivation is true though. But it was never going to be easy in Calabria against af decent team(at home) with SEVEN(!!!) starters missing. And a wet surface isn’t good for a technical team like Roma.

Of course he’s staying, they have no choice.

well, with hull city as the alternative, he could decide to make himself look less stupid by staying.

If Loria isn’t out until transfer market closes,I’m gonna be pissed.? The guy’s almost THE ONLY reason we’re still not in top 4

Sacking Spalletti? What a stupid idea. Even after the Reggina game and with so many injured players, the team is 9W-2D-1L in the last twelve Serie A games and won its last 3 CL games, which makes it the best team in Serie A since October (ahead of Inter), and the Coppa loss at la nuova Juve was the referee’s fault. Loria was a bad choice, but Spalletti is amazing. I hope he’ll stay with Roma forever.

Wow guys, I can’t believe you guys don’t see the logic in maro’s thinking.

why a player of his age even wants to play every game is beyond me.. relax, enjoy life, stay healthy and get on the pitch when called upon, continue to make appearances in big matches, UCL etc..sounds good to me.
Alternatively, move to soggy england to play for Hull City. yeah, tough choice.

All I’m saying is that if you guys had been offered at the beginning of the season sitting fifth in the league, already being knocked out of the Coppa and scraping through to the second round of the CL (remember those Bordeaux games) come the beginning of February, I don’t think any of you would have taken it. The same mistakes are being made. Honestly, if we were playing at this standard in the Premiership we’d be relegation fodder.

I can see what he’s saying, but using Loria was more out of necessity, there was no one else.
I dont think his tactics or his presence has run its course, the team was in the race up until the last day last year. And chris posted the standings over the past 2 months earlier in the week, and Roma was on the top; we’ve been one of, if not the best, sides in the league the past 6-8 weeks. So he’s still getting his message across and his tactics are working
He can only work with what he’s given, this team still has no real striker, and outside of Menez, no real threat on the outsides, and we’re all aware of the defensive issues
Comparing or extrapolating where Roma would be in the EPL is utterly pointless.
And Roma won their CL group over an EPL team

guys, i don’t understand how all of you fail to see the sarcastic and exaggerated nature of maro’s comments. Every time he says something like this, everyone gets all riled up and appalled by certain comments of his: i.e. “favorite players like Loria”, or “if we were playing at this standard in the Premiership we’d be relegation fodder.”
Maro means for all of us to see both side of almost every story, which i love. However, most of you have to take his comments for what they are worth. They are almost NEVER meant to be taken 100% seriously

With Panucci staying and Spalletti having ZERO valid alternatives at CB to Mexes and Juan, Spalletti has a HUGE decision to make in the next few hours. Does he include Panucci on the CL list? If he chooses not to, he is taking an enormous gamble that Mexes, Juan and Cicinho stay healthy and can play 90 mins ecah (is this just for the Aresenal game?). If Spalletti includes Panucci, he’s basically giving in to a player who has made ZERO attempt at repenting for his disgusting display of selfishness and unprofessionalism. I don’t see how Spalletti can include him at this point. Stay tuned….

“Scraping through the group stages” Maro?
We won group A, in case no one told you. And YES, you are overreacting. We got off to a horrible start – but in the last ten seria A games before today, we have amassed 25 points! Id say that’s pretty decent, with or without a draw today!
But then again, maybe you dont mean it and you’re just keeping us on our heels – who the hell knows? And say hi to Little Tuna when you see him!

yea we had no strikers cauz they were all INJURED
Vuci,Totti,Baptista…it would be crazy to buy another attacker cauz you get same problems then: wants playing time, doesn’t get it, he goes out…waste of money
with 8 injuries you can give out 200 million euros on new players if you want, really with at least Vuci and/or Totti we could have won hereI mean Greco,Filipe on bench?
and that Okaka? Cmon,he needs some serious playing time, see Curci! Another year at Siena and he’ll be our 1 keeper for sure. What I’m saying is,that our real problem isn’t one you can possibly solve: INJURIES,just pray to santa maria everybody stays fit or at we have least a decent bench

That maro is such a jokester isn’t he?

Hmm that is interesting Lorenzo, but if they dont sell him, then he’s a Roma player for the remainder of the year, so I dont know that it would hurt to put him on the list-provided everyone stays healthy, I dont see it being a problem
After such a long and distinguished career, does he really want to play out the string at Hull City?
Posted from

well whether or not Maro was joking, Spalletti’s future has been a topic of discussion all year-so it wasnt that off base to discuss

One more name to throw into the mix, Nicolas Frey-so the Motta deal looks to be dead in the water

looks like milan are going to concede to this awful awful lazio team.

Bren, that is precisely the reason Maro made his statements about Spal today… because so many people here were ready to just ship him out early in the season when we were struggling with injuries, form, etc.
Today, we suffered a tough draw because of injuries once again, so Maro found it interesting enough to incite the points he did about it being time for Spal to leave Roma…….. Like i said, most of the time, you have to search for the sarcasm/irony/exaggeration etc. in order to understand Maro’s points.

feel free to correct me if i am wrong maro haha… although I do feel that I usually have a good understanding of your underlying points

I’ve pointed out before that maro and his fishy friend are usually trying to rile people but people fall for it anyway. I knew what he was doing and just went with it today.
