Now Capello smugly claims Roma should be given the 2006 scudetto...if that's not reason enough to shun the damn thing I don't know what is. No favours from the facha!

Not that I'd want it anyway, it would inarguably be even more ridiculous than Inter accepting it.

Oh, and on Pizarro I'm with Demandred. I don't believe in blind faith, but I trust Spalletti if he's this much in love with him.

The way I see the scudetto.. the 2005-2006 one should be voided if Inter are found guilty..

But since they would not have been able to partake in the 2005-2006 season they wouldn't have been able to sign the great players that won them the 2006-2007 title. That one should be Roma's.

Pizarro - I'm done for now.

Quags - We'll call Tuesday "Jumping The Gun Day" because thats what the entire press did with Chivu and Quags. :)

Btw, reports are saying Fab Quags will be sent to Juve ASAP. What happened to that whole starting spot thing?

Calciopoli due - I saw that yesterday. I'm not sure if they'd actually hand that scudetto over to Roma but I don't think I want it anyway. That thing seems cursed. No?

Ant you make a valid point, and what me and i think chris have argued is aquilani has more to offer defensively while being able to do the things pizarro does everyday, and Aquilani has room for improvement, so in the long run Aquilani is the better bet. Pizarro should not hinder the development of Aquilani, which is why i didnt want him back at Roma, but now that he is, he can be a role player but i feel like he wont have as much contribution as last year injuries to other players permittting.

Chris,

UPDATE on Quags - you stated that his card was bought out at around 6m euros for the second half of ownership.

According to tutto sport its going to "Le Buste" and it seems that UDINESE may have won!

I live about 40 minutes from UDINE and I guess it would be cool to see Quags frequently but A) I fucking HATE Udinese and B) I am a Romanista and would rather he play for us.

If he goes to Udinese, Ciao.... non succede mai che venisse da noi.

Serie A

Also, not a big gripe but you must really hate Pizzaro!

I have to disagree. He is not a bad player and of course I agree that there are two sides of the ball and he lacks on defense, but that is what De Rossi is for and being that Roma is one of the smallest of the "Big clubs" we need depth as well. Especially with the schedule including Champions League and the Defense of Coppa Italia. Aquilaninho will definitely get his share of play time and will not hurt his development whatsoever.

Secondly, BOBO? Come on. I take this as a joke. You are joking, right? Please be joking.

Thirdly, I agree with another fan of yours who said you need to copyright "roman clusterfuck". I use your saying all the time, though I can't really find a good translation to use when I am speaking ITalian. I would like to propose that you add "Aquilaninho" to the copyright as well! :-)

Last of all, on tuttosport they are reporting a new scandal "Calciopoli DUE" that Inter may have to give up the scudetto that they took from JUVE (that would then become ours...FORZA ROMA) and or they could be relegated to B. That would be Awesome.

I've been reading this blog for a few weeks and decided to give my 2 cents worth on the Pizarro debate. For me he's a very good player, worth his 12 mln. price tag. He's the one who's dictatitng the tempo, spreading the play around, keeping possession and starting the attacking moves for us, finding the wingers in good positions, etc. Maybe he doesn't have that many direct assits, but that's not his main responsibility. There's a reason why Spalletti relies on him so much - because he adds a lot to our team. Now we are able to play a much more varied way than last year, when we were essentially a counterattack only team. One other thing - sure, most of our goals may come from the wings, but that doesn't mean Pizarro plays no part in them. Quite often this season Pizarro has kept the ball near the centreline at one side of the field, attracted a few opposition players, then send a perfect long pass to a winger or a fullback on the other side of the pitch, who thnaks to this has a lot of space open and can make an assist or at least create some danger.

I also disagree Pizarro's that bad at defeinding. Sure this is not his greatest strenght, but he works a lot in defence, positions himself prety well and recovers a decent amount of balls. His small size is a problem of course, but alongside a quality DM he does a good job in helping the defence IMO.

I also don't think Aquilani is ready to be a first team starter. Everyone is talking how great he did against Inter in the Supercoppa and against Mialn at San Siro last year, but they forget that apart from that he didn't impress in any game last season and struggled a lot against some pretty poor Seria A teams.Aquilani is also a very different player from Pizarro, they have different qualities to offer. Aquilani is more dynamic, he's always looking for risky vertical passes and pushing forward. Which is great sometimes, but when he's not at his best is really hurting the team because it leads to losing possession too often. Aquilani for me is more of a Perrotta type player, he moves well off the ball, good finisher for a midfielder and have a good shot. Aquilani and Pizarro can compliment each other very well on the field, I don't see why there should be a choise between them. We need to have more options in midfield and having both Pizarro and Aquilani in the squad gives us a lot of tactical variaty.

BTW, I am pretty sure Pizarro was bought by Inter for 10 mln. plus 50% of pandev, who by that time was already starting to make a name for himself at Lazio.

Anyway, keep up the good work on this blog. It's very helpful, informative and also hilarious to read.

Aquilani's year this year was essentially a lost season, 9 starts and 4 substitute appearances due to injuries. You're also forgetting he's 22 years old. He's only improving, Pizarro has almost definitely peaked and Aquilani is much much more talented than he is, nobody can deny that.

I'm not denying Pizarro can do everything you mention, the fact is the Roma goals don't come from him. They come from the wings, and he's about as tall as a circus midget so he's essentially a spectator in those situations because he surely can't head anything.

You continually mention his dribbling and passing. I'll never say he can't do those things. But show me something that dictates he isn't a defensive liability and maybe I'll think twice. The fact is his defensive shortcomings probably conceded as many goals as he created. My god have you seen the open space in midfield when he's supposed to drop back (especially against ManU)? You could land a fucking plane with that much open grass.

Watch this video and tell where you see Pizarro ANYWHERE on these goals. Your DM isn't even in the picture, unless he's jogging lazily back to avoid doing any defensive duties. I'm sorry but he is horrible on defense. Just horrible. He's small, he's slow and he's lazy. Luckily I think Aquilani and Barusso will bench him by the end of the season.

Btw, thanks Ant and welcome. I'm always looking for dissenting opinions. With a 20m transfer budget we can do little else but rip each other's heads off about Pizarro and Aquilani.

First, I've been following the commentary for a few weeks now, and compliments are due you, Chris, on the creative analysis of an often unreadable Italian transfer market. And for the laughs too.

Second, I had to throw more wood on all this Pizarro fire. Seems like hatred for him is inversely proportionate to love for Aquilani. I never saw it that way. I'd buy an Aquilani jersey first, but I'm still happy to see the other half of Pizarro come into Roma's hands. No one wants me to regurgitate reasons, but you said you were looking for evidence that he can dribble/pass/assist. I submit this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK96BF528dk

It's worth a watch just for the announcer's "Bye, bye Milan." I'm surprised more people don't remember combinations like this from last season. I've always considered Pizarro an asset further up the field.

As for his defensive skills--here's to hoping more were included in that Inter deal.
