Of Eighty Minute Naps

Roma 5 – Cesena 1

Well, naptime then became playtime. Which typically – at least in my average day – then begets milk and cookies. Or do milk and cookies come before nap time? Is ‘milk and cookies’ merely analogous to the performance of Totti and Erik in the opening minutes?

Does it matter?

I think we’ve all learned a valuable lesson in recent years: the closer Roma gets to behaving like toddlers, the better they’re playing.

The only difference is they now have players who show up to work still wearing diapers.

In the shell of a nut:

Roma was excellent for ten minutes, Cesena never even showed up, Roma got really lucky in those ten minutes, and then everybody went to sleep (granted, Roma was still very good amidst their slumber). They also got rather unlucky in the no red card, no penalty call on the palming in the box right after the third, but given how things were looking…the referee invoked a mercy non-call by not sending Cesena down to ten. And probably rightly so.

This team is currently so hit-and-miss by the half it was nice to see them hit from the off…and then keep hittin’ until the game was put to bed within the first ten minutes. Clinically efficient, really, since it should’ve been four within that timeframe.

Actually, upon further review, it’s almost as though scoring goals was a chore and their “playtime” is knocking the ball around the back and letting Gabriel Heinze have more touches over ninety minutes than Xavi has in a @#$%ing year. And normally, they’d just get right to “playtime” without doing the work which then prompted the reward. This time they did the work and earned their reward, and everyone’s happy. Lesson learned?

You know, applying the methods of parenting young children to professional athletes just might be the secret to great coaching.

A crunch of time, but to be continued…

For now, just this: with an eye to the long-term good of Roma, Fabio Borini and Erik Lamela should start every single game together until they prove they shouldn’t. One man to do the magic with the ball, the other to go find it.

* – Also, Totti is a deity. Etc, etc, etc. Words.

Never taken for granted on the pitch, but the records? It’s Totti. Come on…

Stupid Question: Why are we playing Bologna this weekend?

  • Sigre

If you're wondering why we're playing Bologna twice in quick succession, it's because the December game was actually the postponed 1st round match.

Edit: Yeah, davidk8 beat me to the point.

  • To win and earn 3 points and we'll practice same stuff against Cagliari on Wednesday ( 1st Feb )

  • XAlecX

Right, but we just played them in December, did we miss them originally because of the strike?

  • It was cause of the strike.

  • davidk8

We played the in Matchday 1, which was postponed to December 23rd (I think it was 23rd) due to players' strike.

  • XAlecX

I had totally forgotten about the strike! Thanks dudes

does anyone have a definitive count of how many losses edy reja has blamed on refs since taking over ss goatfuckers...seriously he does it every week

Some coaches love to do that. But Reja does cry a lot though. Let's hope he will have plenty of reasons to blame refs until the end of the season.

im afraid something keeps telling me that he is going to leave. to my understanding he wants a lower buyout clause, and apparently the latest contract proposal has it at 10-15 million.

why would you want such a low buyout clause if your intention is to stay?

  • Chaseandlacey

I don't get it either.  That mean in the summer he could be bought for only 15 million???  That's crazy cuz he's worth so much more, or is it something different???

  • Tony Page

Look at it this way.  If DeRossi want's to leave, than he can just fucking go.  No sense in holding a player hostage that wants to leave anyways.  He should WANT to be here, and help the team he's supposed to love!  I hope thats not the case though, and I think Roma's on the right path to keep him.

  • Philipp_sebastian

I agree with your overall sentiment (he should WANT to stay ...). However, ROMA needs to get some decent cash in case he really WANTS TO GO. That should be in his interest as well if he is such a fan of ROMA !!! I still hope he stays and all the drama is just hyped because people want to sell papers ....

  • mac

Leverage to build the best possible Roma.

  • mac

it is frustrating as hell that DDR has not signed yet, but I think he is making a statement to the new owners that will set a precedent on how future players are handled. I often wonder what his Papa thinks about all this.

  • Giallorossi56

As an Italian and Roma fan, I would LOVE to see Francesco play for Gli Azzurri again. I know it would take a lot more out of him physically, but the memories I have of 2006 are special.

Even if he was a super-sub, I'd love to see Totti partake in the Euros. Imagine Totti at treq with Cassano and Rossi up top (assuming both recover as expected). I know many are against the idea, but as an Italian, there is no way I would be against Totti joining Prandelli & Co.

  • ramm23

Imagine Cassano and Rossi don't recover and Italy end up with a Balotelli and Totti duo!

  • masonio

Naw, silly, it would be France & Pablito.

  • Hondo

Pablo - Totti - Di Natale..

  • romaromaroma

    Balotelli is a world-class CUNT.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • AYR

He's not even good. I don't get it. What's he done that's actually hard except scoring that free kick over 2 years ago and being a bitchy little cunt?

  • iosanguinaregiallerosso

Of course the slow mo version of what happened will make it look worse.

Personally I love him. A misunderstood boy IMO.

  • Kilo15

Agreed.  Ballotelli amuses me, I dont understand the hate for the guy.

  • romaromaroma

    Mmmmm... no comment.

  • When Totti did worse stuff than this back in his younger days, we all turned a blind eye.

As much as a prick he is, Balotelli is the best talent Italy has.

  • romaromaroma

The difference is that Balotelli has a horrible attitude, with complete disrespect to everyone around him. Just for that, I despise him. I can't condone some of the things Totti has done in the past, but I can understand them, as they were not without provocation. Yes, the boy has sublime skill, but that just makes it worse. Such talent is wasted on an insolent, unsmiling little toad. And people wonder why he is racially abused. I have many black friends, but he is certainly not a good advertisement for their race in a country with very few of them. I'll say again that I have no problem with black people, in case anyone falsely accuses me of being a racist.

  • AYR

    omg stop bein so rasist

  • romaromaroma

    haha

  • as roma fan

he's smiling WTF is wrong with him

  • Well now do you see the vision of our great Totti - he saw this coming and much more and was just trying to do everyone a favor by kicking the crap outta Balotelli.

    Even Maicon appreciated Totti's effort.

  • ramm23

oh looks like romanista beat me to it.

  • RoMaNiStA

i LOVE De Rossi reaction 1:02 at the bottom of the video! :)))

  • romaromaroma

Oh, believe me, I was laughing and applauding Totti when he did this. I've always hated this scum. He made Mourinho and the Inter boys look like nice guys. I wish Roy Keane was still playing in the Premier League. He would crack this punk's head open.

  • I'd actually like to see Di Canio + Gattuso + Roy Keane have a go at Balotelli.

But yea , Balotelli is a fucking freak and I hope the FA gives him a good 4-5 match and hope Prandelli can ask this piece of shit to go fuck himself.

  • Gotta say that Gattuso's all class & no crass. Unlike THE MATRIX who's all crass & no class. With that in mind, the scene would have Roy, Di Canio, & Materazzi.

  • romaromaroma

Balotelli would get the shit beaten out of him, then Di Canio would say some Nazi racist shit, and Keane and Gattuso would proceed to break the Lazio prick's legs. Then Keane and Gattuso would go to the pub and get wasted off Guinness and Peroni. The two remaining cripples would crawl to a goat-fucking orgy. :D

  • Totti will pick up that tab !   lolll

  • romaromaroma

And all would be right in the world. The End.

  • Grazie Totti , Grazie Roma !!

  • Free Kjaer

Anyone know where I can watch a replay of the Cesena match?

  • Sammy

We have out own fantacalcio now, just for Roma. However we've crashed the server soooo there's that. asromadreamleague.it if anyone is interested in clicking refresh a billion times.

  • FABIO BORINI purchased outright for 4.6 million !!

STEALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL !!!  Great news this, now let's get DDR.

  • masonio

Great news. However, Parma are saying it is not outright and only a co-ownership. Which is still great, IMO.

  • Yea it seems the excitement caught up with the press guys @ Roma. It's a co-ownership for 4.6 million which is good.  Let's hope this doesn't go to the envelopes.

  • Arfaestnes

Co-ownership for 4.6m would be a horrible, horrible deal considering we had already negotiated a 7m option for full rights in the summer.  Rather we did in fact purchase him outright for 4.6m, and then we immediately turned around and sold half his rights back to Parma for 2.3m.

Seems like a really stupid idea to me.  Should've just tried to negotiate it down to 6m + Okaka or something.

  • Wow that was the best piece of news all winter, outdone only by DDR's renewal when it happens!

  • Brilliant piece of business by Saba and gang.  I just don't know how he manages to loot these clubs.

I am sure if it wasn't for LE, he'd never pay that big bucks for Osvaldo but that's alright - as long Osvaldo works hard and scores then it's all good.

Saba needs to be given a new contract too.

  • Brikkz
  • Lucian

Josè Alberti (FIFA Agent and expert on Latin American football) on possible calciomercato targets:
De Federico, take note of this name. The player, who has done well with Huracán and Independiente, great resemblance to Messi and is stronger than Lamela.I hope Roma do not get Marquinho, he's not ready for Seria A.Lucas of São Paolo: a phenomenon.

Ocampos of River Plate: Roma can land a Lamela-like deal.

  • I just wonder if he comes, who is going to warm bench then?

  • Jonas

I think Marquinho will be used in a Cafu-like role, he's left footed and would therefore play either LB instead of Angel/Taddei, so actually he's a younger version of Taddei/Cicinho with Dani Alves kinda rushes at the sideline

we can use someone like him, cauz at our fullback positons a lot will change from now on, Cassetti/Cici will leave while Taddei and Perrotta won't feature much at RB/LB once new arrivals come (and rightfully so, Taddei at LB is ok until now, Perrotta at RB was not)

    ATM it seems like this:
    RB: Rosi/Taddei/???          LB: Marquinho/Angel/Taddei

  • Aha, ok, i understand..i didnt know on which position he is playing, i was watching some videos of him and i thought he was a mid player..

  • iosanguinaregiallerosso

From what I have seen I too would have said that he was a midfielder...

  • Philipp_sebastian

I know Totti was MOTM but I must say JUAN had a perfect game IMO. Apart from the goal he was so incredibly good with tackles and positioning that reminded of his best days of last season. I know it was "only Cesena" but he showed that he can still do it. Heinze and Kjaer messed up before Eder's goal.

Bojan deserved goal after his amazing dribble in box. Still don't know how he missed from 3 meters while Cesena D already turned away. I hope this missed sitter (similar to the one in earlier game vs. Lecce) would not go into his head, and block him. Clear to see he has potential to make us all awe in excitement !!

Despite the current momentum I am not overly optimistic about Coppa game @ Juve tomorrow. It will be tough game ! I recall the sweet Coppa wins in 2009-2010 when Riise and Vuci scored late goals. Hope we get similar success as the extra star above logo looks really cool !! Forza Roma !!

Totti was selected the World Player of the Week by goal.com

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/23...

  • MagicaRoma

If that week consists of 5000 days, I agree!

  • Lucian

At the moment Roma is very good when it's flowing and has the game by the scruff of the neck. It is not yet very good at controlling the game, cynically managing a result.

That's why, if Roma is not bossing it, it's not delivering over the 90'.

Now they have started to metabolize LE's game, and are becoming conscious of their strength. They'll start getting a little more battle hardy, a little tougher.

It's only been 6 months, and we're in with a shout for a CL spot. I reckon this whole year is about building up the team, and we need to wait for next season to see the full package.

Oh, and Totti really is a god.

  • That 75% possession was bossing the game. They had 3 goals and simply reserved energy by keeping the ball and refraining from excess vertical balls.

  • MagicaRoma

This sounds like great news for about 5 seconds: http://www.football-italia.net...

But after those 5 seconds reality and the Roman heart kick in: NO WAY I want Totti at EURO2012!!!

In this shape/form he might just be able to make us dream for another 2/3 seasons, but if he plays the Euro's, what are the chances he burns out early, doesn't get the much needed summer rest he needs or worst: gets injured!??!

No, I want to enjoy Totti in a Roma shirt as long as possible, playing in Euro12 will have a chance of shortening that Roma-time, so I am fully against it.

FOCUS on Roma France', why change that great routine now? ;)

  • plz prandelli

    u r stupid

  • and u r an idiot

  • vaietc

I do love mature arguments :). Agree with @df6d6d89d2f9d9c0448d665860ab405b:disqus, Totti at the Euros will definitely cripple Roma. I've started to dream of Erik as a successor but I want Totti to be the king of Rome as long as possible. Erik will have his time.

  • nakata

What's with Borini biting his hand?

  • Kilo15

Well what I do know is that it's supposed to be a knife between his teeth.  What that means, I'm not sure.  Perhaps he's supposed to be a badass?  Like a commando or something?  I don't know.

  • Chaseandlacey

seems pretty bad ass to me.

  • Sigre

I think he said he was imitating a pirate (pretty cool to begin with) and he wanted to show that he was always hungry for more goals/success. As if is endless running didn't give a clear indication of that already. I love that kid.

  • Dani

It's the italian expression (common across Europe) to play with the knife between your teeth. It means you do whatever it takes.

  • FrankieASR

This is a pretty good indication as well...

    http://www.vocegiallorossa.it/...

  • ADL

I was hoping to see a good photo of Greco with Juan's nose! Also Taddei wagging his finger in disapproval in the 5th minute; that would be great as a gif.

Two things I felt a little bad about: 1) Bojan (speaking of young children) still unable to score when Cesena's defense leaves their wide open goal out there like a candy dish, 2) Cesena fans... because my great grandfather was born in Cesena. On the other hand if my team signed Adrian Mutu it would be very hard for me to continue watching. Thankfully we did not suffer that fate.
