Musical Goalkeeping Chairs

By: chris | January 9th, 2008

tmpphpyucldi.jpgThe Young’un speaks, and he wants out, dammit.

In an interview today (or yesterday, or the day before – sometime recently), Gilu Curci has made it clear that he wants out, and the sooner the better. Finally. But not to be sold per say, he just wants more than having to dust himself off every few months and sub in for Doni who has eaten some bad lasagna – especially with the struggle to stay alive in the Coppa impeding. He’s said he’d like to be sent out on co-ownership rather than loan, because the club of choice would then have a more vested interest in his progress and future. Begrudgingly, I’ll agree, but co-ownership and the purse strings at Trigoria frighten me to no end. How about we compromise with a buyback option?

The two leading squads are said to be Parma and Sampdoria, both are totally cool with me, because I’m sure any day now they’ll ask. Parma is notorious, or was, for their youth development – great factor – and groomed a keeper some may know as Gigi. So the comparisons would be both abundant and welcome. Sampdoria, on the other hand, has a much better chance of making it to Europe (we’ll cap it at the UEFA Cup), and European exposure, at least more than the odd CL start in Chanmester, would help immeasurably. (That is if it turns out to be more than a 6 month deal.)

* – Parma’s director isn’t interested, and seems to imply that he can only be had on loan. Fine by me.

I say let the young boy free, into the calcio wilderness, and let him return a man. A big hulking goalkeeper of a man. There’s the possibility that J. Serg could wind up as Doni’s back up (TWO Brazilian keepers? You’ve got to be shitting me), but for some reason I tend to doubt that’d be the case. Feel free to substitute the ghost of Carlo Zotti in there as well. So that leaves the replacement…

Backup Netminders Who Could Double As My Grandfather

Plenty of options have popped up. I’m convinced you could roll a dice just as easily as your could pick the correct winner of The Doni Backup Sweepstakes.

Antonio Chimenti (Udinese): I was totally convinced in the summer that Father Time himself would be returning to the Olimpico as a backup to Doni while Curci breastfed on the calcio goalkeeping teat on loan somewhere else. He’d cost around the minimal amount, and is the definition of a fine wine, because he just gets better and better every time I see him (I’m logical enough to realize he understands this and is simply putting on a show for my personal amusement – he’s not that good). A very logical and probable choice…until you realize that Udinese is chaired by Pietro Leonardi. And he’s a fucktard who hates Roma. That should make things easy.

Nicolas Penneteau (Valenciennes):
Strange name, no clue who he is, but he’s just 26 and is starting for what used to be one of the most craptastic teams in France, but now sits in 6th having conceded the 4th fewest goals in the league (17 conceded in 19). Long time starter for Ligue 1 club Bastia. Reportedly being sought out by Barca as a backup as well, along with that Amelia guy. Agent is saying Roma is interested and monitoring him, and a move is possible. Who knows.

Anyway, this is him:

Why do I feel like I’d get the sudden urge to gouge my eyes out were Doni to ever get hurt? (Reread that sentence. Did you ever think such insanity would be written? Never.)

Tony Sylva (Lille): Another L1 name. The few times I’ve seen him he’s been alright. Nothing special, typical backup material. Same agent as the guy above, who says he isn’t going anywhere midseason. Fine by me.

Massimo Taibi (Ascoli):
Ummm, sure? He’s been in Serie B this season, doing god knows what, and he’ll be an ancient 38 in Febuary. I’d venture to guess he’s the “still puttering around, albeit slightly dead, last resort” option.

A couple other names were mentioned referencing next summer, Alberto Fontana and Alessio Scarpi, but if Gilu goes now, that isn’t much help unless Spal is really ready to hand over the second spot to J. Serg – and my heart to a cardiologist.

Since TGIP hinted at it some time earlier in the week, it seems like we may finally get our wish to watch him in another uni. Although I struggle to believe Rosella could sell cocaine to Kate Moss in under a month. I’m skeptical.

Oh yeah, and Toni is a billion times (I exaggerate) cheaper and his dollar-to-goal ratio is much higher :P

I was under the impression he was some up and coming rising star, he`s 28 and i just utubed him, i know him from cl games. I like him but he aint no spring chicken!

Yeah, age is an issue. But as long as the price isn’t stupid, I’d say about £7 million or a swap for Bianchi, I’d have him.

Ok 7 million pounds is what 11 euros? is he having a laugh! 7 million pounds plus Bianchi isn’t enough.

Berbatov is rumoured to be tracked by ManU. He is a great player but he is his own personality, he leaves training if he is fed up, he is moody etc… but boy he is capable!

It is not the time to pick Berbatov…He should have been picked when he was in Leverkusen, our friends! Too late now…
I would sell Doni and start Curci…Buffon had the chance to start at freaking 12 for Parma…If you don’t give the guy a chance you will never know. I am sure in training he’s right there with Doni.

I kind of agree with Traian in the sense that it would be a million times better to have grabbed the guy while he was making his transition to a bigger league. He’s wanted by bigger, richer clubs and his style and approach to football has been influence/adapted for the EPL game.

Point being? We’re talking about a guy who likes being at the Spurs, who’s worth a bundle and has many more suitors, yet many scoff at the idea of Bianchi coming.

Curci has been stunted by lack of playing. He is still the same keeper who started opening day at Reggina Spalletti’s first season, just added some man strength with age and training upper body. His cool Romano air hasn’t helped him, like Rosi. His concentration is too shaky and he loses focus. At Old Trafford he was 100% DIALED IN to the job and he looked the part that night. He still has terrible trouble reading the game, and gets beaten from distance far too often. Then you see him charging off the line to chase down Recoba near the bloody corner flag in Torino weeks ago, or the nightmare he had U21 match at Wembley this summer, the mistake v Napoli, and you wonder when he’ll get it.

Having said that, I don’t think he would have been beaten by Giovinco like Doni was on that set piece at Empoli.

But the society is to blame for the mishandling of this prized asset. By not getting a decent #2 and keeping Curci as prisoner this year and last, we have sufficiently retarded his growth as a player. I think he would further along in progress.

Even Amelia said it earlier this year, as he and Curci are extremely close and speak all the time. “Gianluca must go and play, you don’t improve as a goalkeeper wearing a rain jacket with your arms crossed on the bench every week.”

    Yo Len.

Dont be too quick to bash the society.

Curci denied going on loan NUMEROUS times.

He will become great, one day, but needs p.t.

    Yo Daniele.

Rosi didn’t want to go to Chievo either.

Neither did half the players who have gone on loan.

Because they are usually young and feel that it must mean their clubs don’t fancy them.

Criscito did not want to go back to Genoa this year but was forced for his own good, and the future of the team, ie, the future development of his talent.

    Challah!

Chris- i posted about a week ago about how Berbatov said he wanted out and how i’d love him at Roma….looks too good to be true now. I saw him in a couple games on FSC. Great player with loads of talent.

There are so many risks though, and so little time. Selling Mancini for 24 mil could give us JUST enough to break even after picking up Berbatov and Vargas (Exit Itunes) But what are the chances of Rosella making ALL of that happen in what, 20 days? None.
And putting Berbatov in Italy in the middle of the season…not to sure about that one. Not to mention Tottenham have said they dont want him to leave.

Who saw that one article linking us to Mathieu, Magnin, Dossena, Felipe, Lucio, Gilberto Silva, Inler, Berbatov, Bianchi, Mutu, Mario Gomez, Claudio Pizarro, and Elmander. Greatest article ever! Although it’s a bunch of useless gibberish. The title though would be great if it came true “Roma want Mutu, Berbatov, and Lucio”. 3-5-2 anyone?

    Aho Len.

Difference is they actually WENT on loan.

Curci refused and stayed. Rosi and the others never really cried about leaving. Because they knew it would better them for the senior squad.

Curci was dumb for doing this, and the mgmt. should have given him a one way ticket to Parma while back for Rosi.

-Roma want Pagliuca as Doni’s backup but he won’t accept.

-Il Romanista writer details his conversation with Sven when he called Man City’s training ground and assures us they spoke about Mancini, and other topics (the Iran-US crisis), no matter what Errikson denied yesterday.

-Roma would prefer Baptista (who is now untouchable) to Fred (who is totally overpriced thanks to English dizzying fees) and won’t get either. Baptista would cost at least 18 million in the summer.

-Where Amoruso goes (rather, if) could determine Bianchi’s destination.

-Spalletti likes Marco Boriello, strangely enough, and his name has come up at Trigoria the last 24 hours.

-In total shocking news from Carlo Antognoni, Pazzini may actually be LOANED out for the rest of the season from La Viola as they are trying to get a top striker. This would mortify me if he was “farmed” out to Catania lolol or some other lesser side. Imagine? Me either.

-Palladino is the next great one in Spalletti’s eyes and would love to have him from Juve. Juve are going to sell him in the summer as they retool and Roma would like to get in early action here with a loan and 1st option in the summer. Not likely but I’d be thrilled. They play him out wide and he looks like a 4th division 38-yr-old Armenian wingback, but Palla’ is top talent when situated correctly up top or off a front ST.

    I don’t see anything happening.
