Milan: A Matter of Perspective! Part Deux.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Roma 0 – Milan 0

Very, very basic thoughts on the Milan game. One very basic thought:

They played poorly, by their standards, against Milan and earned a point…

And people are upset by this? They lost no ground in or around the currently relevant European spaces; they tacked another clean sheet on the board; they put handcuffs on Milan’s best player for 89-odd minutes; and they did so with a whole three games remaining against top half teams – all of which are at home.

This is not a week-to-week sport: points will be dropped, form will be imperfect, chances will go begging and fans will be left seething. A marathon, not a sprint.

Still undefeated since October and 5-2-1 under Ranieri against Serie A teams which qualified for Europe last year. And no one’s pretending they’re in December/January form, but they’re allowed not to be – they’re human. Blips on the radar for professional athletic teams are, shockingly, allowed and, even more shockingly, inevitable; when that blip spell includes a draw with Milan, you’re doing something awfully, awfully right.

Notes

  • Milan can rue missed chances in the press all they want, but they clearly haven’t watched enough Julio Sergio this year – it’s taken something special to get past Julio Sergio, and just putting stuff on net ain’t gonna to cut it.

On a slightly scarier note, what are the chances Milan have JSB’s agent in the speed dial top five…

  • This is the first game I’ve genuinely questioned Ranieri’s use of subs, but not tactically – there’s a reason he’s on the sideline and everyone else isn’t. There were simply some terribly tired legs at the end of the match, with a couple – Daniele & David – suffering blows during the game on top of lacking fitness coming into the match. In fact, I hadn’t realized just how many players in the XI had enjoyed the midweek friendlies:

Juan, Burdisso, Daniele, Julio Baptista, Mirko & Riise, while David & Julio Sergio are/were still far from fitness (less of an issue in Sergio’s case). If there’s ever a time to empty the subs quota, that’s it.

Claudio played Russian roulette and won this time, but next time the revolver just might empty.

  • Ranieri nailed it in the presser when asked why he didn’t bring in Menez, who I wanted to see play desperately, but at the expense of logic: for whom?

No one without sacrificing a great deal of defensive steel and perhaps the point, that was the problem.

  • You’ll notice that as Perrotta’s form has struggled, so too has Roma.

    Not a coincidence.

  • Milan’s midfield was impressive – particularly Flamini – but my word if Daniele De Rossi didn’t play the role of a thousand men in that first half…
  • This was John Arne Riise’s worst game in a long, long time. Not only were Bonera and Huntelaar – in that order – turning him into fits, but he couldn’t get forward.

Again, if one of your defenders can play that poorly and still come away with a clean sheet…

  • And I’d like to know – in all honesty – when’s the last time the goddamn attacking abilities of Daniele Bonera necessitated a formation change (4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 so that Simone could offer more help).

If it’s anything but ‘never’ I’m packing up all my things, moving to Papua New Guinea and quitting life.

  • The mere presence of Luca Toni’s shadow wreaked more havoc in the Milan half than an epileptic bull in a fine china shop. It’s been nearly two months since his last true appearance, and it took not two minutes to see the immense dimension he brings to the side.
  • Massimo Ambrosini is the new Fabio Quagliarella.
  • Apparently this will be the last sell-out for another nine years.
  • Two goals conceded in the last seven home league games, one of those Pastore’s (non)penalty.

    Not bad

It’ll now be interesting to see not the result, but the performance after a proper week off. If they succumb to a draw with Livorno…

Go crazy, folks.

  • found your blog on bing and decided to check out.
  • This way to effective for home exercise. great article, thank you
  • Good write-up!!! Always keep it up.

NIcely put Chris, n i do agree with u about Claudio's questionable subs .. its what i've been saying all week, Ranieri got LUCKY!!
but nevertheless, we played poorly n earned a point against 2nd place .. not bad at all, we shud continue from there!

    Forza Romaaaa!!

    ... overhyped

Cassano is a much better ball mover than Huntelaar and he is much more creative, though their shooting/scoring seem even.

i just think both have been overrated. Cassano is a very good player, but honestly Pazzini is a better player and has really done more for Samp.

all the calling for Huntelaar on this site and the calling for Cassano for the WC is just has really been
  • Francesco (Giallorosso)
I'm also glad we never got Huntelaar. I never considered hi good enough to help us the way we needed.
  • gio
i will guess the reason we are talking about Gallas is so that we have better negotiating ground for Burdisso with Inter. if they think we have another option in the background they will be more amenable to our terms if they want to sell Burdisso.

otherwise, we could be looking for a Mexes replacement. i can't believe Ranieri would consider loosing Juan. he is so clearly the best CB in serie A and probabaly all of club football right now.
  • Jonas
pss and if Pellegrini can't even make the CL quartes with such a team (Ronaldo,Kaka,Cassillas,Raul,Higuain,VD Vaart,Lass,Alonso,Ramos...) then IMO no one can win it with this team, not even Capello or Mou.
  • Jonas
what I would give to just see Rooney @ Roma alongside Totti

can't think of any negatives about his play,he's fast, lethal shot, can score with the head, plays and moves very well, works a lot on the pitch...too bad he's looks like a pig or Shrek

ManU and Lyon deserved to go through, altough Milan and Real are 2 very nice names in club history, too bad they won't play the quarters. What are Ferguson and his players drinking? They won Legaue cup not so long ago,are first in EPL,they seem like a real CL contender...sure are good times for a ManU fan, basterds

ps: someone posted what the differende was between ManU and us against Milan on saturday? Rooney > Baptista, there you go
  • kistajk
@gio: Cassano is way better than Huntelaar. That kid's got some real talent, too bad he's a clown. If it wasn't for his attitude he would've been the natural heir to Totti in Italy.
  • gio
Cannavarro WAS the defense in '06. he was amazing. no one can convince me otherwise.

i have a new-found hate for Nesta after his latest dirty moves, including that dive in our box at the San Siro.

and i was the one who said it over and over but no one listened - Huntelaar was not (and is not) worth his price tag. it would have been a pity had he come to Rome. just like Cassano, very overhyped.
  • lalapolala
agreed @ Dhaw. Capello is the most insane coach & yet he still able to manage talent very2 well.
  • lalapolala
ya, i was wrong on Nesta @ W/Cup 06'.apoligise on that.
but he is the main reason why Milan getting better this season. when he played, the back line is well organised. just like our D with/without Juan. just my opinion though. :)
  • Dhaw
I think Capello is crazier. Oh man I just cannot forget how he would rip into our players in 2001.

I always thought this man will collapse on the sideline with a massive stroke because of his craziness. ( I hope not for sure.)

Madrid fired Capello just because he didn't make them play beautiful which was the stupidest thing they could have ever done.
  • lalapolala
i can't imagine how crazy SAF is. watch the 1st leg of Milan - Man U and see how SAF insanely shouted many F words to Jonny Evans because of small mistake that young defender commited.
  • Dhaw
Baptista lost his confidence by moving to Madrid and constantly being played outta position. His lion of sevilla died right there and it has eventually turned him into the donkey of Roma.
  • Tim
Nesta missed most of the 06 WC, why should he have won an award? that's why Materazzi played, remember?
  • Dhaw
I wouldn't call Madrid solely responsible for being the talent spoiler.

Ppl want to and play in Madrid because of the name and history of the club. Huntelaar would have been a fucking bomber had he moved to Arsenal but he chose Madrid just because he wanted that on his resume.

He eventually didn't get enough minutes and didn't come to terms with the atmosphere and lost confidence.

Madrid is not meant for everyone who is young. Some players ruin their own careers by joining teams just for fame and money.

    So it works both ways.
  • lalapolala
speaking of dellusion, how i wish that Rooney join us & play alongside Totti. can't imagine... :)
  • James
and we all know how that turned out . . .

2 missed sitters by Del Piero and a golden goal for Trezeguet . . .

Nesta btw was on the receiving end of those goals, the 1st of which he did not connect on the block, and the 2nd frech goal the byline cut pass whizzed by him and ultimately Trezeguet latched onto
  • Dhaw
The problem with Madrid is not the players, it's the manager who hasn't found a system to fit them in and a manager who isn't able to control his dressing room.

They need someone like Capello, Jose, SAF to pull the strings.
  • James
@ lalapolala: nesta was the biggest liability on the defense for milan in the 1st leg vs. man utd.

rooney tore nesta to shreds. and just to edify, nesta did not play a role in '06 as he was injured most of the tournament, '04 Euro's I believe Sandro was also injured, he had limited time in '02. However, Nesta did play in the final in Euro 2000 vs. the french.
  • lalapolala
Real Madrid is the talent spoiler. Look what they've done to Baptista, Hunterlaar, Drenthe, V der Vart and many more!
  • lalapolala
    Dhaw,
IMO Cannavaro was great because of Nesta. Maybe Canna gets more highlight because he was the captain. and i still remember Canna clear-fouled Klose/Podolski in the penalty box that ref didn't call it. Had it been called, Germany surely made to the final.
I chose Pirlo because he was the ball-distributor machine & he still is.
and who on this board wouldn't want Totti-God winnning award? ;)
  • Andrea
Real Madrid of early 21st century are increasingly resembling Inter of late 20th century. The more cash they splash, the less they actually win. Joke of Europe.
  • Dhaw
    lalapola,

Pirlo and Totti didn't do anything spectacular to win a award but Cannavaro did throughout the campaign.

He was just fucking brilliant in the Wcup along with Buffon.
  • Dhaw
    Apuzzo,

    lmaoooo @ travelocity.com
  • lalapolala
If Nesta was able to play last night, thing would've been different for Milan. He is the heart the team.
and i believe that him, Pirlo or Totti should've won awards after the W/Cup 06' instead of Cannavaro.
  • ked
Wow, alot of hate for Inter...I actually hope they make it to the Santiago Bernabéu. I wouldn't object to Calcio getting another trophy- even if its Inter.
  • James
It's not Pirlo's fault that the Milan attack has no teeth. Seems like Boriello is now playing to his skill level that we would expect & not punching above his weight, Ronaldinho is definitely not the Ronie of Barca, and Milan's defense was simply pathetic. I echo the sentiments though of the poster who pointed out that gli azzurri is going to be in trouble come this summer. . .
  • Apuzzo
Hahah Dhaw. Interisti see Mou kissing the Inter badge and think Mou "loves" the club. He loves their money, thats about all the love he has for them. A mercenary, just like most players in that club.

As soon as they are knocked out of the CL he will be on travelocity.com looking for the next flight to Madrid.
  • Dhaw
    fandibong,

That's like asking me to cheer for Lazio.
Oh and Italy is not losing the 4th spot @ the end of the season.

You will win against Chelsea but don't expect to get anywhere close to Santiago Bernabéu. Not happening.
  • fandibong
Dhaw, Mou is not the kind of person who will middle finger his own - or ex club. If any, he will middle finger everyone else in Serie A but Inter. Even, when he left Chelsea he left there with good impressions to everyone and still well loved there. Well, you better cheer up for Inter next week in case you guys sitting at 4th spot at the end of season.
  • Nino
i dont think he was pissed when he came off or real madrid about to be eliminated ....i think the actual reason why he was pissed because he is playing for a team who kills talents instead of developing 'em and that team called Real Madrid, he is going back to Milan in the near future.
  • jed
kaka was pissed when he came off... watching the replay on fsc now
  • Dhaw
    fandibong,

You are not losing mourinho at all. He is going to show you the middle finger and walk out by stirring some shit or the other.
  • fandibong
Dhaw, I know the chance is really high that we lose Mou to Madrid this summer, cause reaility is we have one of the best manager in the world and Madrid showed their interest so many times. I hope it doesnt happen though, not before we win Champions League.
  • Sterling
    Agreed, Dhaw.

Every time I watch Juan dismantle an attack with a tackle that would get a clumsier defender booked, I'm reminded of what could've been had management given him up for Huntelaar.
  • mimo
i wont be surprised if Real end up toppling Barca as league winners because in all likelihood Barca will be worrying about league + CL for much longer than Real.
  • mimo
its amazing how different the luck+form issue is in leagues vs KO touraments like CL. A guy like Higuain in such good form & a solid CF in general will get what he deserves in the league games over a season. but one off game for him today- and he becomes Real's villain in Europe.
  • Dhaw
I am so glad we didn't get Huntelaar. That guy has just forgotten the meaning of goals.

Lets be glad the management held their ground and did not give Juan away for Hunter.
  • michele-dellacroce(asr)
all i could think about when watching the manyoo milan tie was how much ROMA would want to be in that spot. mexes/juan would have handled rooney much better. to me it's not so much seeing milan play like shit up front, it's when italian teams defense gets ripped apart like that.
    BUT
good to see the whities go out! LMAO
football equivalent of an epic fail hehe
  • DeGuilio
7-2 on agg is worse than our 8-3. Goo, bad day for Italian footy
  • Dhaw
    not tomorrow. Next week.*
  • Dhaw
    Jose to Real Madrid please.
Watch Jose beating Chelsea tomorrow and then getting out in the quarters and then having a big fuck up with either Moratti or the FIGC and then behave that he has had enough and he wants to get out of Italy because he doesnt get respect and blah blah.
  • Dhaw
    Ooops. Pardon me mimo ;)

I forgot. Delusional fan after all.
  • Giuseppe Di Cassino
well look for Moroninho to coach Real next season
  • mimo
@Dhaw- how can you even compare Milan and Roma? Dont you know that whatever Roma does is called "punching above their weight"? while Milan of course, are big enough & hence expected to challenge for the treble every year.
  • mimo
so the first iceberg hits Galacticos 2.0
  • Dhaw
And I thought some ppl here over-react with a loss and lose their mind.

Just go to the Milan page and read them calling for a new team & management & coach.

They behave as if they had a fucking change of winning absolutely anything this year.

They just like us should be glad that we will make it for the Champions League next season. That was the objective and objective will be accomplished.
  • mimo
I like Higuain but really he was almost 100% to blame for missing Real's best chances today. He could have scored 3 in the first half!
  • mimo
Lisandro looked like a deer in headlights with only the GK to beat. guess he could not beleive how easy it was.
  • Dhaw
You know beating Real in Madrid has not been a problem @ all for a lot of teams in the last 5-6 years.

I remember there used to be a time when ppl wee scared of going to Madrid and play Real.

    How things have changed.
  • mimo
my GOD. what a miss by Lyon.
  • Nino
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA LISANDRO
  • mimo
Lyon has been very solid in defending. awesome away performance.
  • Dhaw
So this is the 4th or 5th consecutive year Real gets out this time of the year eh ?
  • Nino
    GOAL MAN U ...4-0
  • Bashar
7-2 on aggregate. That is as bad as our 8-3.
  • mimo
wonder how Lyon will fare vs the english teams.. dont see them going too far in CL. could have seen Real reaching the semis, but guess thats not happening.
  • Dhaw
    4th for Manchester.
  • Dhaw
    mimo,

after playing the way they have over the last few years - I dont think the fans or the management is in any position to ask them play beautiful and win.

what they need is someone like Jose to control things and he might be a prick but he is good at what he does
  • Dhaw
Jose is just going to get what he wants from Real.

They will badly need him now and give him whatever he wants. Somehow I believe Jose will break this CL jinx with Real and only real.
  • mimo
Jose to Real will be a relief. but wonder what that means for Real fans & management wanting to play pretty footie.
  • Nino
raul in for kaka, terrible coaching job ...raul is not the answer to solve madrid's 2 goals problem
  • mimo
Higuain missed 3 great chances in the first half. strange given his current form.
  • Dhaw
This is so perfectly setting up for Jose Mourinho.

I wont be surprised if he is on the Real bench next season.
  • Nino
milan-man utd clash is over, im watching real madrid-lyon right now, madrid have quite chance to come back in 10 mins left in the game ...could be exciting!! mac, that website, ill keep that in my mind, wont forget.
  • mimo
wonder if Madrid have another comeback in them. Real-Sevilla's 3-2 was quite a game last weekend.
  • Nino
    thank u mac, veetle.com ...i wont forget!! :)
  • Bashar
err.. 2 more. 3-1 win is necessary
  • mimo
It seems over for REAL!!..knew a late away goal by Lyon was coming. Really strange play from Real who have so much attacking talent- but were caught between attacking & trying to prevent an away goal.
  • Mac
  • Bashar
GOAL LYON!! REAL MADRID NEED 3!!!
  • Nino
goal for lyon, pjanic!! real madrid need 2 goals miracle!
  • Mac
Hey Nino, It appears you are watching the game now, in the future, any really big game like this will be on Veetle.com
You can set up an account for free. Fox Soccer / Gol TV stuff like that is always streamed for big games. You can also watch movies!
  • Bashar
Inzaghi needs to score 4. This really is embarrassing for Italy. Inter won't really disgrace themselves if they go out and Fiorentina got cheated out.

But Roma, Milan, Genoa and Lazio should be ashamed of themselves for letting Italy down this year. Juventus as well unless they go far in the Europa League (i.e. semifinals at least)
  • mimo
have been watching quite a lot of La Liga games on GolTV this season. and have to say that C.Ronaldo has been far less of a twat in Spain vs in England. the english tabloids + pundits + Fergie probably encouraged his worst traits on & off the pitch.
  • Nino
Mimo, ur right!! lol and dont worry about WC2010, our boy De Rossi will take care of it if pirlo plays badly
  • Nino
i dont know if lyon will score again, real madrid and lyon are going to extra time!!
  • mimo
    @Nino- "hes going downhill".

surely that flatters Pirlo? as fas as I can see, he is at the bottom of the hill already!! big worry for the NT in WC2010.
  • Nino
inzaghi in for borriello, lol thats embarassing!
  • mimo
Leo is the kind of coach who looks smart when other LET him. when has he actually outthought or even matched some team in top form & a coach who knows what he is doing?
  • Nino
i agree with mimo about pirlo, hes going downhill.
  • mimo
if nothing else, this game vs Manure should serve as Milan's wake up call. no mid-f replacements for Pirlo is going to kill them- Pirlo is slower than a snail these days & has lost his only value- crossing ability & fks.
  • Nino
david beckham is going in for abate, i dont know what is leonardo trying to do? It is a little late to come back
  • Sterling
At this point, I'm just pulling for United to shatter the 8-3 aggregate that killed Roma 3 years back.
  • mimo
i switched over to the Real-Lyon game after the first goal. really embarassing display by Milan.
  • Nino
any any1 please send me the site/stream of man utd-milan clash?
  • Dhaw
    Sigh 3-0
  • mimo
@sterling- it should be duly noted that Rooney scored off of a long ball with the rest of the team parking the bus.
  • Nino
thats what milan deserves for being a team with average player age at 34
  • Nino
    wow ac milan
  • Sterling
And then Rooney scores after I finish typing that.
  • Sterling
This is exactly what United did to KO Barca in 08. Scholes scored off a total laser of a bullshit goal and then they parked the bus.

And this is what I hate about English clubs and the fans and pundits who defend them breathlessly.

When an Italian club scores and parks the bus, it's catanaccio and it's negative football.

When an English club scores and parks the bus, it's "defending your lead."
  • mimo
Manure score 2-0. horrible defending by Milan. both Rooney goals today were really plain vanilla cross/long-ball goals w/ shambolic and gutless defending. at least Viola made Bayern score 2 great strikes in addition to the Bayern-love the refs showed before getting knocked out.
  • mimo
@chris- Fergie is doing it with a defence/mid-f that knows how to shut out another team.
  • Someone tell me the difference between what Fergie is doing and what Ranieri was doing on Saturday.
