14788_hp.jpg(If you’re sexy and you know it clap your hands)

Despite the relative lack of funds, Roma was one of the busiest clubs in Serie A during the summer, with a massive influx of players and the loss of only a couple players who may have fit into the squad this year. So here are the final grades, and it looks like the management did a pretty good job this summer. Yeah, apocalypse inevitable. Onto the grades:

Transfers In

Juan (Bayer Leverkusen): Despite the fact that he has only player a handful of minutes thus far, he is the buy of the summer for many a Giallorossi fan. For a few, he is the reason Chivu was deemed expendable. Basically handed over on a silver platter by old boy Rudi Voller for a paltry €6.3m, he will likely have the most impact in the squad out of any of the buys this summer over the life of his contract. Yeah, even more than that other Brazilian defender. Grade: A

Cicinho (Real Madrid): It took an act of Congress to get him from the Jaws of Life grip Real had on him, but The Grand Imperial Poobah finally got his Brazilian. The price was relatively fair, and Roma was able to get Mijatovic & Co. down from their moderately absurd valuation (as is usually the case). Still, he’s a little imperfect and coming off a year derailed by a major injury. It’ll take a little while to see how much value Roma will get for the price. Grade: B+

Ludovic Giuly (Barcelona): The French Pocket Rocket has already begun to show his worth filling in for Simone Perrotta, and displayed his greatest trait: being just an all-around annoyance for opposing defenses. Which is a far cry from Christian Wilhelmsson last year, who was an all-around annoyance for Roma. Lulu Gulu has scored his first goal and will score plenty in the Champions League. For €3m, a great value purchase. Grade: B+ (Could easily eclipse this but due to his age the biggest question will be how his speed holds up over the course of the season, so we’re keeping it conservative for now)

Mauro Esposito (Cagliari): Somewhat incomplete at the moment, but the form of Lulu Gulu and Mirko Vucinic ascending to Mancini backup has turned Espo’s uphill battle into climbing K2. Last year was largely lost due to injury, and this year is starting out no better. Two years ago he was It, and he’ll need to really earn his way back to that type of status. Still, on a relatively cheap co-ownership he’s a gamble more than worth taking. Grade: B

Adrian Pit (Bellinzona): He was on a free, which is nice. But he signed a one year contract after spending the last few years in the Swiss Mentally Challenged League. Quite strange. Anyway you look at it, he should have been loaned out. He has a long way to go before being Roma caliber with adequate experience. Hard to argue against a free and the scouts have been right on more than one occasion, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Grace: B-

David Pizarro (Inter): €12m for a bench player. €12m. (Feel free to insert a reference to any prison gang rape scene here) Grade: F–

Mirko Vucinic (Lecce): Steep price, but his talent could have easily dictated much more. He has been kind of hit or miss thus far on the left wing, but now that Il Capitano has only Mirko behind him, it’s fair to say Mirko will get about 10 or so starts up top this year, and how well he performs there will largely dictate a lot in the future of the club. Let’s face it, in 2 years if Mirko progresses as expected, the one striker system will probably have to go. Grade: A-

Keivan Zarineh (Rieti): Free transfer, which is good, but the next Luca @#$%ing Toni had an awesome record of 9 goals in 2 years in Serie C2. And he’s 22. Now he’s learning the way from Paolo Di Canio at Cisco Roma. Basically, everywhere you look there’s a red flag. Grade: D+

Julio Sergio (FA): Most people forget his contract ran up last summer. Well, he’s a good third keeper and a good guy in the locker room. But that’s not what’s important: he played a large role in convincing Cicinho that Rome was the only place for him. With his miniscule salary, that’s what you call bang for you buck. Grade: A-

Ahmed Barusso
(Rimini): It’s only a co-ownership at the moment, but Ahmed probably has the highest potential value proportional to price paid from the summer. His physical gifts are glaring, and if he progresses as many expect him to over the next 2 years, he will be one of the best and most devastating central mids in the game. My pick for transfer of the summer. Grade: A

Marco Andreolli (Inter): Still only on co-ownership, but already one of the more naturally gifted players on the squad. He’ll be eased into the squad (that’s code for “enjoy the pine”), and his pricetag probably won’t fluxuate much before le buste next summer, so his grade could be considered incomplete at the moment, because there’s a very real possibility Massimo will offer up silly scrilla to bring him back next year. Either way, Roma will make a profit from his sale or they have a guy considered on par with Nesta’s talent on their hands. That’s a win-win situation. Grade: B+

Vitorino Antunes (Pacos de Ferreira): Vice-Tonetto was a value buy with a look to the future. Even though he’s only on loan, his option at €1.2m is so small he’d really have to fall flat on his face to force The Grand Imperial Poobah to tell the powers-that-be not to pick it up. Right now it’s a very cheap evaluation period for a talented player. On paper it sounds like a shrewd move. Grade: B

Marco Cassetti
(Lecce): The remainder of his contract was picked up for less than seven figures. No matter what he lacks defensively, he’s well worth it. Grade: B+

Daniel Unal (Bellinzona): The U-17 Swiss superstud is only on a loan, but was poached from under the waiting arms of Inter, Juve and Milan. That alone is stellar. Plus, he scored a goal in his Primavera debut. However, could Rosella really not afford the pricetag to buy him outright? Does she have too many handbags on layaway? It’s not like he’s Pato or anything. Grade: C- (Strictly for the loan)

Transfers Out

Cristian Chivu (Inter): Is it over? Is it really over? I still have nightmares about the saga that was Chivu this summer. If we’re looking at this from a perspective of: Roma should have handled this a long time ago, then no, it wasn’t a wonderful deal. But it would be naive to think this was about finances or lack of an extension or that Rosella put her foot down and said, “I’m selling him and that’s that.” However this decision was made, it wasn’t just about finances. The not-so-secret impending arrival of Juan makes this quite obvious, and also makes you wonder who was the boss of it all when it came to making this decision (I’ll say it, I think it was Spalletti - in fact I’m relatively sure of it). So did Rosella & Co. do a good job of getting maximum value for a player who had limited his options to one suitor? Yes. Did they replace him - at the very least - adequately? Yes. Grade: B+

Stefano Okaka Chuka (Modena): If he wasn’t playing in Rome, he had to play somewhere. He will never be a bench player waiting for his time. Good move, although Serie A would have been preferable. Grade: B+

Ricardo Faty (Bayer Leverkusen): I like the loan move, but is two years really necessary? Sounds like it might have been a gift for the Juan thievery. Grade: B-

Aleandro Rosi (Chievo): Yes, Chievo has an option to buy clause when his loan ends after the season, but Roma also has a buy-back clause so this makes it tolerable. Rosi just needs to play right now, although Serie A would’ve been the preferred route (and we know there wasn’t a dearth of suitors). Grade: C+

Christian Wilhelmsson (Bolton): Addition by subtraction. Grade: A++

Vincenzo Montella
(Sampdoria): Quite simply, he deserved it. Grade: A

Shabani Nonda (Galatasaray): I understand Shabs may not have been in favor of sitting in the stands and waving the flag for most of the season, but they couldn’t say “no thanks” the €1.3m they got for him and stick him on the pine as a backup forward for at least half the year? That’s nothing more than rainy day money. Grade: B-

Edgar “Burritos” Alvarez (Livorno): Yes, he was surplus to requirements, but why can’t they get anybody to buy him? It’s not as though he’d cost an arm and a leg. Or more than a pack of juicy fruit and a signed lithograph of Marco Amelia (conceding a goal, of course). Plus, the team asked if he could stay around. I’m not sure it was that important he be moved. Grade: C

Valerio Virga, Simone Palermo, Daniele Magliocchetti, Pietro Pipolo, Gianluca Freddi, Keivan Zarineh, Alessio Cerci: All had to go out on loan, all good moves. Grade: B+

Overall, it was a very good summer for Roma. The key not so much the additions, but how many quality players they picked up while only selling off one player who actually factored into the team. Rosella & Co. spent €34m on the mercato, which was second only to Juventus, who had to make sure everybody knew they were back at the party by showing up all blinged out in a chinchilla coat. Much of the mercato centers around the personal feelings on Chivu, and whether or not Rosella royally screwed it up last summer/winter by not signing him to an extension. But at this point all the evidence points to it being a) a good move, and b) coming from someone other than the money managers. He’ll be forgotten before long. In fact, it looks like he may be already.

The only new boy to really have an impact thus far is Lulu Gulu, and we’ll have to wait for the season to kick into full swing before we know how prudent the purchases actually were. In fact, we’ll revisit the summer mercato midseason to see how some of the buys made out. For value and bang-for-your-buck, it looks really good right now (except for that one purchase). I’m more than happy with it, as it provides one of the biggest weak points from last year: quality depth. Hopefully this will go a long way in avoiding point drops at the hands of teams like Torino and Cagliari, thus vaulting them into contention for the scudetto. If initial form is any indication, then it’s going to be a very good season, and the new buys - when healthy - should only help.

My Grade: B+

Chris, is right. 12 M for a backup is simply too much. We are not one of the Giants from up north with an unlimited bankroll.

B/c King Alberto has had injury issues in the past, having a 3rd DM is clearly sound logic (feverishly knocking on wood). As he has establishes himself as one of the premier players in Italia and Europe (still knocking), Piza will become expendable.

I think the bottom line is that we’re not gonna get 12 M out of Piza and that money could have been spent elsewhere (I’m looking at you Julio Baptista).

That document does not say Nonda was let go for free. It say that the termination of his contract was consensual.
He was sold for 1.3m euros.

Cliffs Notes, report cards…I am worried that a PSAT is coming to test our Roma knowledge. I can envision an essay question debating the merits of Aquilani v. Pizarro…and there would definitely be a right and wrong answer.

I gave a solid A- for the summer. It is by far the best transfer season top to bottom in my 10 years of fandom. It’s not higher because I am still quite unsettled by the lack of depth at striker, though I can’t be mad about any of the decisions made. Plus, we’ll have Toni in a couple of years! Right?

I like Pizarro but Chris is right. He’s been the most expensive player this year and for a DM who can’t defend this is too much. He plays at his best only if Perrotta or De Rossi cover for him - and we know at that Trafford game Perrotta wasn’t there and De Rossi never coverd for him.

    @Traian

I know what it says. But how can you get a fee for a player that is not under contract with you and Nonda terminated the contrast, it doesn’t say he was sold for a fee. (Like it does for other players that we sold)

Best video suggestion ever, partly for the play, but mostly for the song. I hunted the internet like a teenager looking for the next crappy pop star’s album when the Muse CD was a week away. When I did finally come upon it I stuck Track 2 on repeat for about 30-40 minutes and I remember telling my roommate, “this song is going to be absolutely massive”. I love Muse, really really love Muse. Standing O for josh.

Just one thing Chris, although maybe a bit late…but imho, Pizzaro has become so overrated on this blog because of the way you underrate him hehe. I hope you understand what i’m trying to say. You keep dissing him while he dosen’t deserve to be! He is a good player and would certainly add depth for the squad which is really great. But if i had to chose between him and Aquilani i’d certainly pick King Alberto! But that does not make Pizzaro a bad player. It’s Aquilani who is so great!
And finally if Spalleti thinks he’s worth 12m to spend on, then let’s trust his judgement!

I think you all are being way too harsh on Pizarro here. We all know his deficiencies but the guy can really dictate play and hold onto the ball for quite a while in midfield before releasing the pass, something that I don’t think Aqui can do at such a level yet (though I expect him to gain the confidence to be able to do so soon.) and this is what made him so indispensible to Spalletti last year. I think Maro mentioned one of the goals against Lyon, where he had the ball and rather than clear it off the line and hoof it out, he held onto the ball for an additional second or two and released a pass down the flank which started the speedy counter which led to the goal. You guys remember ‘05-’06 when Spalletti first came and there were matches we just couldn’t close out? We’d be up a goal or two but just could not maintain possession in midfield and would either score 3 more goals in rapid succession to crush the opposition or we’d surrender goals (against Palermo at the Renzo Barbera comes to mind) and draw a match we should have won simply because we couldn’t slow down tempo and hold onto the ball. Of course this assumes that our man De Rossi really protects the back four and makes far fewer runs forward than he does when partnered up with Aqui (they tend to switch up quite a bit, though DDR usually goes back to retrieve the ball from deep more). Pizarro offers another dimension and that’s something all top teams have, the ability to change up play on the fly with players who have different things to offer technically and tactically. I’d say that he’s here because of Spalletti more than Rosella and Co, so it might be unfair to grade them in this regard.

Let’s not mention the OT game ever again, much less single out players from it.

    I’m with Slim.

I too think Pizarro was too expensive, but you saying he’s maaybe worth half what we spent is ridiculous. Spalletti has said very clearly that Pizarro is the second most important member on the team, and Spalletti is the one that turned this team into what we now are. I trust him. And Pizarro is a great player, one of the best passers in Serie A. Don’t get me wrong, Aquilani’s amazing, and if I had to choose between the two I’d pick Aquilani right now, but I really think they’ll alternate a lot. If Pizarro starts from the bench sometimes, then we’re good enough of a team to afford having a great midfielder come on later in the game.

Let’s enjoy what we have, what’s the point of dissing players on our own team, especially when we’re talking about one of the most important players on the team, even if he was overpaid a couple million euros (and I say overpaid because he didn’t play much for Inter, or else he would have been well worth that). Either way, that pinpoint cross in Roma’s first goal against Catania is his, he has a really precise shot (Shaktar), he takes most indirect free kicks. He can do a lot of things…

Jamil, thank you. You made my point for me. The second sentence summed it up.

9/10 of Pizarro’s game is acquired, not God given.

(Oh, and how many times a game do you see guys hold onto the ball an extra second or two. Just because it resulted in a spectacular goal let’s not give it too much credit. I respect maro’s opinion quite a bit, but that wasn’t all that wonderful. You can count how many times that happens during a game on 3 hands.)

And I will admit I have a personal thing against David, because he’s slow, he’s small (for a “DM”), he’s the antithesis of an athlete, he can’t tackle, he can’t play defense, but more so, he’s lackadaisical in getting back on D and I hate that. For someone so bad at a skill he should be giving out twice the effort, not a fraction. That really rubs me the wrong way.

Oh, and the next time someone calls DP “great” I’m going to send you a pornado.

I love Mancini.. I can’t wait till he gets back on the field!! I also think it’s great how he always draws a heart with his fingers when he scores fantastic goals.. I’m not sure if that is meant for anyone in particular but I’m gonna pretend that’s for us Roma fans..

The one thing that annoys me about Pizarro is when he dribbles in a circle around himself then carries on what he was doing.. But I do think he’s a great player and 12 mn or not.. I’d rather have him than have Inter take him back.. Hell.. He’s no Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Makelele or Vieira.. but then again.. They’re all carrying price tags of 20 mn!

I give the mercato a B. Failed to bring a 3rd striker, failed to bring a viable vice-Tonetto for this year (Antunes is for the future) although I’m sure Cicinho will cover when needed. Failed to bring a back-up keeper and get Curci some needed experience. Other than that, I do think they did very well.

David isn’t even in Pirlo’s league when it comes to comparable attributes.

For his supposed ‘elite’ skills, David isn’t even in the top tier. And one of my major points with the DP/AP comparison is that AP has Ivan, a true DM partnering with him. Hell, even Ambrosini could be considered such at times. DDR is too offensively inclined. I’ve been a proponent of DP in another system, but he really exposes the one position he’s supposed to cover.

De Rossi to offensively inclined I agree…

Have you noticed that in these last three games De Rossi has barely even had a shot on goal or gotten inside the oposing teams goal area… It is because he is playing with Aquilani next to him and Aquilani goes forward so much he has to stay back… we are waisting here half of De Rossi’s game.

Have yo noticed how poor Totti has been playing? having to come so far back to get the ball where he gets tackled really hard ans is harly given any space? Again, since Aquilani is playing as the other DM half of the creativity leaves the field with in Piza’s boots.

I don’t think Aquilani is that type of midfielder, he is not a playmaker, he is more of a box to box midfielder, he goes up very well and can score some great goals but with him in that position in this type of formation we are misusing two other key players that right now are better than him, With Pizarro in the field De Rossi and Totti are more free to move forward and attack even though it Piza is not such a great defender he draws the foul and stops play and he can get a tackle too it is not just his specialy…

believe chris, Spalletti did not want a 12 mill player just to sit in the bench, he will get a lot of playing time but I would be very VERY very sad if Aquilani were taken of the formaiton for him, Spalletti has to find a way of either playing them both at the same time or of giving them both plenty of playing time like in the begining of last season.

and im sorry chris but we have to agree to disagree, and it is not that I love Piza… it is far from it Aquilani is one of my favorite roma player but Piza is just much more adecuate for the job and the games against Milan, Inter, ManU, Lyon, Shaktar, Olympiacos prove it…

and the cheap shot you used against piza in the ManU game, besides the fact that he was coming back from injusr you could have made totti look like the worst sttacker in the world with those higlights

haven’t really posted on this blog much but let’s never compare Pirlo to Pizaro ever again. You would need to pair DP with only the most ferocious ball winner for him to be effective at all. Let’s be honest with ourselves, anyone who is paired with DDR in midfield is gonna look pretty good and over these past few games the pairing of DDR and AA has been unbelievable so let’s keep it like that. DP is the poor man’s riquelme.

Juan, i don’t really see how Totti has been playing bad? Totti isn’t really an out and out striker in the mold of a Trezeguet or someone like that. When he drops back into midfield is that really hurting our game? He’s one of the BEST in the world on the ball. Totti could have easily had 3 goals so far this year, and numerous assists (the one to taddei’s head against palermo comes to mind). Roma keep playing like this and they are world beaters, fact.

I personaly think he is better when Pizarro is feeding him balls up top so that he can do whatever he wants with the ball up top were he can get fouled less easily and dosen’t have to run so much with the ball to get in scoring position…

Two other really great players that come to mind as antitheses of athletes are Inzaghi and Pirlo…thats no reason to hate a guy, in fact thats reason to love him more, that hes playing with the big guys..and beating them too..

Anyways, i wont bicker about Pizarro anymore because frankly it seems like you wont ever change your mind about him chris…However i will say that last season we played some of the most beautiful football, if not THE most beautiful football i have ever seen…and i know that Pizarro contributed to this, and wasnt a weakness in our team that we had to overcome to play that well. I wish you’d change your mind about him.

No player who dedicates himself to Roma deserves to be tongue whipped like you do to Pizarro, save it for Chivu and the rest.
