Let the Overhaul Commence

By: chris | October 26th, 2008

“I did not explain it well enough to my players. From now on I will evidently have to use different methods.

“We need to accept the evidence that we cannot go out there to play in such a slow manner. The same thing happened against Inter.

“If I see that this aspect does not improve, because the goals we concede are repetitive, I will have to find a system where they can understand it better. I must ensure this does not happen any more.â€

This is something many of us have wanted for about 18 months now: tactical variation. One of two reasons – along with injuries – for the downfall. When the vaunted Spalletti attack isn’t working, as is the case right now, they have no Plan B.

Back to the beginning. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, folks.

My worst fear is that we may become a feeder club should this campaign keep going on it’s current path.

You already are. Dacourt, Chivu, Mancini, it’s been one sale every summer. Even if you miss out on the CL, I don’t see any mass departures. Maybe Menez will be picked up Inter, though.

7 out of 10 of Udine shots were on goal,Roma’s was nly out of 20,less than half of it,that’s saying something.

Finish chances…were’t we supposed to get an centre attackerwho would bang in 20+ goals?
God I wish we bought Militio…
right now players like him or Hunterlaar (!!!!) could take us to next level

could we use more money…yes. Could we use better players…yes. But we have the players in place for a great team if we’re healthy. we could use a better right winger, although I love Taddei b/c he gives it his all and he loves the shirt. De Rossi, Juan, Mexes, Pannucci, Totti, Aquialani, Vuci, Baptista, Perotta, at least in my opinion are top class and have the quality to do extremely well in Serie A, and Europe. The problem for me isn’t money, or ownership. So what is it? Luck, Confidence, Tactics, Injuries…? These things yes, but mainly, we need to stop sucking at futbol.

Chase, the key word in your statement ‘if’ we’re healthy. obviously we are not and there is still a huge gap in talent when our starting XI are not on the field. As for Perrotta & Taddei, I see them as useful players coming off the bench, not fuoriclasse players such as Totti, Mexes, DDR, & potentially AA. As Kristjak mentioned above the ‘core’ nucleus has been the same backbone of the club for the past 3 years and the club has not added suffuciently in pedigree, instead having sold players to direct rivals.

I will love this team no matter what also, but something has to change. The tactics can’t remain the same if the players that made it work are older or more injury prone and the players that were brought in to help make it work make it worse. The tactics need to change to the team we have not the team we want. I know that some changes will come and we will add some new players. That being said most teams have figured out how to beat our formation because we are not playing it well and we have been playing it too long. Change the formation now to fit the players we have and just for the fact we need to do something else because what we are doing now does not work.

Yeah mac, the damm tactics would make a difference if and only if the players are able to adjust right away to a new formation. I would go for a 4-4-2. But other problems have to be overcome, mainly, mental deficiencies, and team morale.

In addition, our susceptibility to injury (which has rocked this team the most), is something that is going to lurk in the backround for a long time.

We gotta take our Taddei and insert Menez in there PRONTO!

    Ciao Romanisti!!!

Another fucking disaster today!!! Spalletti has to change the formation. If he doesn’t, he’s not good enough for a top European club. The manager has to adapt his tactics to his squad, and not the other way around.

    Doni
    Cicinho Juan Mexes Cassetti

    Taddei De Rossi Aquilani Perrotta

    Totti

    Vucinic

Loria is an absolute disaster and Riise needs alot more time to adapt to the man-marking in Serie A. We should have gone harder for the Fiorentina targets- Vargas and Gilardino. They would have fit in much better than Riise and Baptista.

Spalletti must act now, or he has to go.

I agree pauly, there are many more problems than the formation. I also agree with Taddei for Menez, I was hoping for that this game. 4-4-2 makes the most sense, since that is what most people grow up playing and it would be the easiest switch and maybe the most effective right now, but, I would also start training on other formation to give different looks in the future and to make the most of the talent we have.

THANK YOU GENOA! THANK YOU NAPOLI! THANK YOU FIORENTINA!

I rigori?

sory, this goes back to the last page.

    Pauly,

i agree with you about Inter’s performances. by and large they have not been that impressive and often just mediocre. they have had a lot of luck with shots, ricochets and reffing calls.

for the coppa, we tied them (essentially because the penalty thing is bullshit) with a shitty half-assed team 30% of whom were not fit.

they sucked against Lecce and shold have lost but for a couple of calls that went their way.

they sucked against Milan and got spanked by a better team.

i did not see Genova, but they must have sucked to have drawn against a 10 man mid-table side

they were mediocre against Samp, another lower end of the table team with whom they tied.

and they were mediocre against Catania, against whom they should have tied.

the penalty by which they beat Bologna was for an incorrectly awarded penalty for an unintentional hand ball (hit Marchini’s foot and then hand so by the new rules this cannot be considered an intentional handling offense … yet for Inter it was).

Inter have either been super-fuckin-lucky or they are paying someone off.

    100% right Pauly.

…the only real rout was Torino. BFD

plus, add to that list a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen.
a 1-0 over Anorthosis means nothing.

the only thing i will give them is that they play a balanced game, working defense all the time and grinding out results, but nothing impressive.

    AAAAAGH!

Exactly asem. You have found the answer to my relative and passive state here (unless I get annoyed by someone’s comment), but just dont expect anything at all! Just take each game as whatever, and that if we’re fortunate, we will play well. A win will be more than expect. But of course, this line of thinking is all based on all the bullshit that has happened to the team. The team, under naormal circumstances, is way better than the standings and the performances. So, the less you expect, the better it is…….but, no matter what:

    Roma Si AMA!

    yeah Pauly,

i think you put the 2 + 2 together and, for Inter, you get 5. like i said, either lots of coincidence or someone is getting early Christmas gifts.
truth be told, they are solid, but not as good as everyone is hyping them to be.

i think Alessio has a good 4-4-2, the only problem is Totti is really the only one we have who can play well out in the point, and from what i saw during the Inter game, he seemed actually better when he was hanging back closer to his old 3/4ista spot.

maybe Monty could do the trick, and Baptista did look good out there against Bordeaux but it is hard to know if that was luck or if he can be consistent.

certainly Vuci, Menez and Okaka play better out on the edge and a little deeper.

I wouldn’t mind seeing A VERY ATTACKING 4-4-2 that would play to the individual’s best fielded positions.

    Cicinho-Mexes-Juan-Tonetto
    Menez—DDR—Aqui—Vuci
    —-Totti—-Baptista—-

Vuci and Menez would have to run like beasts (i.e. Perrotta and Taddei) to make it work. or perhaps start with Taddei and Perrotta to wear down the opposition and bring in Menez and Vuci after 60′.
