It Was All About…
By: chris | May 31st, 2009
This is what the preview began as before my laptop lost an epic battle with a bottle of spring water and I missed the game – if only to relive one of my favorite meaningless moments of the last few years.
Roma v Torino
The last time Roma went into the final day of the season with nothing but pride and Francesco Totti’s individual goals to play for, it wound up 4-3 and Francesco with his desired achievement in tow.
That game was Messina on May 27th, 2007 – not so long ago. Roma had second well sewn up (with Messina long relegated) and Francesco was battling Ruud Van Equineresemblence and Afonso Alves for king of goals in Europe. So what happened? Francesco got his two and a shiny golden trophy in a game which could’ve been played on hardwood.
But funnily enough, I don’t remember that game for Francesco’s goals. I remember it for Christian Rigano, of all people. Not for his two goals, but the penalty he conceded to, who else, Francesco. With 15 mins or so left and Francesco needing a second goal for the title, Rigano brought down Francesco in the box. Only it wasn’t just a ticky-tack penalty – he might as well have thrown on a cowboy hat, picked up some rope and lassoed him down with the strength of a thousand men (which the mason does have). It was such an incredibly obvious penalty you’d have to think he did it on purpose….an incredibly obvious penalty days after he’d been linked to and voiced his love for Roma in the presses. One of the least subtle “come and get me” pleas in recent calcio history? Mmm hmm.
(Minute two or so.)
And I love Rigano for it.
Totti missed the penalty but got his second, and the title, minutes later. And Christian Rigano went to Levante, where he became a pro bono footballer before returning to the dungeons of Italy.
Back to Torino: I expect this game to go roughly the same. That whole defense thing? Out the window. Torino – or whatever shell of a team wearing granata kits will be taking the pitch – have to press for goals because they’re in deep, deep shite. They’re equal on points with Bologna, but BFC holds the tie-breaker. Thus il toro have to take more points than the Rossoblu tomorrow – win v draw, win v loss or draw v loss. And Bologna are hosting Catania, who are typically rubbish outside of Sicily (and Rome).
Long story short: chances are not good. So they’ll be playing like their lives depend on it. Which it does.
***
And this is what turned out:
The number 10 is the number 9 for three months. How fitting.
And thus ushers in a conclusion which is so desperately needed. Beginning the Summer O’Drama…now.

Oh and great news, Mexes might be suspended for the first game of the season. Great sign already. Roma also close to signing Eder.

I understand we’ve fallen short of our objective this season, but I don’t think that it was such a ’shit season’. With all the accumulated injuries and with our starting CBs pairing together for less than half the games of the season, we were only 5 points behind Fiorentina (yes, I know we have an inferior head-to-head record) in the end. 5 points isn’t a whole lot, is it?
All I know is I still got to watch Roma play some beautiful football, especially in midfield.
As for transfer rumors and talk of takeovers… I know speculations are part of the fun of following a team sport, but I think at this juncture it’s a bit too early and, frankly, quite pointless.quello che sarĂ , sarĂ .
ps We do need some solid backup CBs though. Conceding 61 goals in one season is just plain retarded. However, conceding 61 and still landing 6th place, is not.

Please keep Menez and Motta, otherwise I’ll start cursing on Rosella again.

Mazzari could indeed be the ‘next hot italian prospect’
he’s only 46 or so,even younger as Spal but he did a good job at Samp(in Europe and final of coppa, serie A was more dissapointing)
and who knows he’ll bring along Cassano/Pazzini/Palombo/every ship in the marine of GenoaPosted from

i could see maazzari heading over to Juve and bringing cazzano with him

Shouldn’t dream on bringing Cassano/Pazzini/Palombo into Roma when we got no cash to spend at all. We would be able to do that only by selling Menez/Baptista/Perotta.

Perrotta at the most is going to fetch us 7-9 million.
Baptista is not going to leave.
Menez will go for almost the same we paid for him.
Taddei might fetch you just wat Perrotta might. So roughly we are looking at 20-25 odd million from those few sales and with that money you can only afford one “good” player.

Just off topic.
I see Real Madrid doing some crzy things this year in the transfer mkt. Perez is back and he is going to go crazy in creating what he did few years ago.
Apparently Huntelaar is on his way out. Madrid looking @ 20 mil

I dont know what you could have against Menez, fadayn…look at his play the past two weeks, but also around the turn of the year when the team was rolling; he instantly changed the pace and severity of our attack when he came on.
So one year on, one year more experienced and hopefully physically stronger, and he should be a hell of an asset.

bren, ya its just a game and a half or so. one was against the worst team in the league missing 7 of its starting xi. he’s been a cock all year, talking about leaving. he’s a diver. his goal against milan was straight at dida.
Now, I would love him to impress me as riise has started to do occasionally since march 11th but he hasn’t. i’ve been reading here that it takes time to adjust to serie a and to give them all time. so lets do that…and give me time to bitch about the bidoni too

lets hope we have a good transfer season this year and that we keep all of our players, what we nee dnow is just to keep our team and bring in a few players that will rotate with the ones we have already since the team has achived some kind of harmony already… it is more important to have players that can play perfectly with each other than to have 11 stars on the team… we need consistency so we need to keep every player we bought this past transfer season, even if they di dnot turn out so hot since they will probably play better next year.
If menez starts next year like he started this one then we could have one great offence

Itunes, Okaka and Cerci need to stay in Rome from next season onwards.

MedioBanca coming to the rescue of Rosella. Almost.
Thats some good news.

How is that good news?

If menez can learn how to pass he may be a really good player. I don’t see him as a starter next year…

F,
I have always said here that I dont want the club to be sold. Sensi’s have a bond with this club and a great history. I dont want that to be broken.
Roma is Roma for what it is. As simple as that. One scudetto in 25 years is fine by me as long our values are intact. You want endless money then EPL teams, the Ladri brother’s are the ones to support.

There is an unofficial Totti website and its pretty neat.

Selling the club is basically selling Roma’s soul.
Probably it sounds all dramatic but if u support a team for over 16 years then you might see where I am coming from.

Dhaw, that IS dramatic. You think that any owner, other than the Sensis are the devil and want to , turn the club into money machines a la EPL? Do you honestly think that the Sensis would own the club for all time?
Selling the club to owners who might have a better way of putting Roma on the map (which we know the Sensis haven’t been able to do), and might have better cash to aide in the process. I’m not talking money to buy whoever we want, I’m talking money needed in the league for Roma to be able to challenge for CHL and Scudetto. I mean, after this season, I see a more open playing field. And considering that clubs like Fiorentina, Udinese, Napoli, Genoa and even Lazio (Mauro Zarate) are dong well, and to some extent have more ressources available – Roma might end up looking like a sucker!
And fine, if you call having the means to be able to “keep up” as being un-Roma, well then thats okay. But then I wont call you dramatic… I’ll call you naive.
Sorry for the ranting – just being the devils advocate!Posted from

This was my first live game, and I had a great time. Roma fans were very friendly and the whole atmosphere was like a family outing. I got some decent pics too. I can’t wait to go back!
