Injury Roundup

His Tottiness:
Worked uninterrupted today with the team and, at this point, looks like he’ll be a preplanned sub, some speculating around 30 minutes or so. Aside from Spalletti’s quote…

“I hope to have Totti for the game against Inter. He will be playing, at least for one of either half.”

…a few days ago, nothing to indicate a specific time frame from those in the know. I suspect it’ll depend on how the knee looks Sunday morning (if there’s swelling or some such) and the game situation.

Whatever the case, it’ll be nice to play with a #10 again. (Trying not to think of any potential risks and praying for the best. Good juju.)

Juan: Ready to go after getting his pitch time in with the Selecao over the break, a nice little warmup for him to gain some match fitness after being devoid of minutes for so long. 45 minutes against Bolivia and 66 against Colombia should go a long way in getting him back into the swing of things against Inter. And even better, he was prepped against South American competition, meaning he should be ripe to face the Argie NT’s satellite club. He’ll have to be, because he’s gotta play 90.

Julio Baptista: Out, of course, and likely won’t even return to Rome until Tuesday, ruling him out against Chelsea. Not sure how anything less could’ve been expected, par for the course this season.

Max: Ready & fit; could even start from the very beginning, which would be both welcome and a bit frightening. Yeah, he’s got the Serie A experience and knows Inter very, very well, but he’s played 19 Serie A minutes this year (90 against Cluj as well) and can’t exactly be considered “match fit”, or anything close. Whatever the case, his geriatric legs will at least be around for cover.

Pizaman:
Ready & fit as well, but will likely start on the pine. Alberto’s earned his spot.

From this I can see two lineups (swapping Riise with Tonetto should you feel so inclined):

Doni
Cicinho, Juan, Loria, Tonetto
DDR, Aquilani
Taddei, Perrotta, Menez
Vucinic

or

Doni
Cicinho, Juan, Loria, Tonetto
DDR, Brighi
Taddei, Aquilani, Perrotta
Vucinic

And now all that’s left is to wait for the squad list…with great trepidation.

UPDATE: Squad List.

Aquilani
Artur
Bertagnoli
Brighi
Cicinho
De Rossi
Filipe
Juan
Loria
Marangon
Menez
Montella
Okaka
Perrotta
Pizarro
Riise
Taddei
Tonetto
Totti
Virga
Vucinic

Inconsequential Newsy Bits

I) The Valon Behrami thing has been done. I’d like to end it there so that I need not shower in bleach again.

II)
Think I missed this, but Juan has put a definitive date on his Roman departure it seems:

“I expect to get to the end of my contract with Roma as I have been looked after very well since arriving in Italy,” Juan told SporTV.

“I want to stay at Roma for now and then after the 2010 World Cup I will make a decision on my future. I have a dream to wear the Flamengo shirt again, mainly because I now have a son and I want him to become a Flamengo supporter like me.

Juan will be 31 after WC 2010, so it’s not unthinkable that he would want to go back home to see out his career, even though he’d clearly be too studly a defender for the Brazilian Serie A at that age.

So that’s, what, like 20 more games with Juan? Nice.

III)
I never really liked Chivu while he was at Roma. Something always put me off about him, something I couldn’t explain. Now I’m getting my explanation. Twat.

IV)
Really have no idea why this is the top story on il Romanista with Inter looming, but Ballack had operations on both feet and is out for Wednesday. Substitute “Ballack” with “Ibrahimovic” and I’d feel much better.

V)
And for good measure, make sure not to get too excited. Inter will be bringing twelve.

(Dripping with irony, of course.)

Gargano is terrible.. If Napoli replace him and Iezzo in the starting lineup they will have a really good team.. I would back them as CL favorites if they had a better keeper than Iezzo. Not that he did much wrong today.. but still.

Chelsea have an enormous number of injuries but still managed to thrash Boro 0-5 away.. Their injuries would be nice for us and if they had some of them when they visit the Olimpico we may have a shot at getting something out of the games.. but they are still frightening.

What the hell?? Juve’s defense completely turned off and Manninger was so casual.. a pass from Lavezzi or if that chip had been on target and it’s 3-1..

    Bashar,

i think a team of meth-addicted test-rabbits could beat Middlesbrough.

though i would love to see Roma there, how nice is it to see Napoli at the head of the charts instead of Inter-juve-Milan?

i am not worried about tomorrows game except for Loria. and i am almost excited to see him play and see what happens. he is sure to keep us on the edges of our seats.

since Vuci plats better deeper and on the left, it makes me wonder what Menez would be like at the point

well, apparently several people have argued about my statements regarding Gilardino. i did not have enough time to respond before, but here is why i believe what i do.

the reasons Gilardino scored 2 so easily against Reggina were …

    1. it was against reggina
    2. it was against 10 men
    3. it was against a 10 man Reggina (yes, that is the same as #1 & #2 combined) – coming on after the opposing team (and let’s remember, not a great one) was run ragged with 10 men on the ball for over 45 min.
    4. gilardino, like Mutu, has great service from the Fiorentina midfield – the true unsung heroes of the team. Donadel, Kuzmanovic, Montolivo, Semioli – they are the one’s behind the Viola success. without them these two front guys would be nothing. the Nazionale plays a different formation with different tactics, the likes of which neither Toni nor Gilardino fit into.
    5. Jovetic. Jovetic moves the ball into the box and creates the biggest draw for opposing defenders when he has the ball, giving Gilardino and/or Mutu lots of space.
    6. Gilardino is useed to series A play only. international play is tougher. many teams tackle harder and defend more aggressively and he can’t handle that – he just falls down, or worse, just dives to compensate.
    7. Gilardino has no confidence levels in international play. confidence is one of the most important factors for a striker, and confidence levels are specific to very particular conditions. he is young and at a young age the sense of ego can be easily divided if it is not strong enough. when the ego is fractured, it can be along lines specific to context – such as in series A, in intra-euro club matches, or international games. if one has not been able to score any one of these groups and the ego is not strong enough, then the ego will fracture along these group-lines in order to preserve some sense of ego in the group(s) in which the individual can still perform well. for the groups in which the individual cannot perform well, however, the ego fails, making the individual less confident in that particular group. the player can eventually break this cycle by scoring(this is what in British sport is often referred to as ‘breaking the duck’, which actually comes from the cricket term ‘breaking the duck egg’), but the longer it goes on, the harder and harder it becomes for him to score in the future. with Gilardino it has gone on so long he will only score if he really gets lucky.

if you watch the way he has played in blue, he has squandered some of the best passes and opportunities to score of anyone on the team. he falls and dives. he plays horribly. just look at the footage. same as Toni. these guys have some talent, but lack lots of confidence. as a result, they remain basically one-hit wonders – and it pains me to say that, especially about Toni.

i could go into more detail but i already suspect most will not even read all this; but if someone wants further commentary, just ask and i will be happy to provide.

in any case, i stand by my conviction that neither will score in blue until they score at least 20 for their clubs, regain confidence, and find a way to fit into Lippi’s system. we can all wait until next game – those who think Gilardino will score can think what they want and i will think he will not score and we will see who is right. ideally, however, i hope he just doesn’t get fielded.
