Giallorossi In Azzurro
By: chris | May 28th, 2008The final 23 man squad came out today and the man to be dropped was Riccardo Montolivo (still can’t get over the fact that two of the four Serie A Champions League squad contributed one completely useless Italian combined), which means Roma will send four to Swissaustria to try and bring home the glory – and if not, well, we’re still World Champions for another two years.
Congrats to the boys.
Christian Panucci
We’ve been asking for a targetman since forever, but we honestly need somebody to look up the number of headers scored in Serie A this season. Christian might very well be Top 5. Therefore, if Borriello falters, OMR should be vice-Toni.
More likely he’ll either be a reserve CB/RB off the bench; or, if Fabio Grosso doesn’t play up to his typical Azzurri standards, he’ll be starting on the right with Zambro on the left. And, should the Azzurri win a free kick just outside the box near the goal line, Panuccigol is a good as gold.
Daniele De Rossi
Got to start, right? Clearly the best midfielder in Serie A this season, he’s simply a class above the rest when it comes to Gattuso and Ambrosini, his likely competitors/partners in the midfield alongside The World’s Best Right Foot (eat it, Becks).
There’s a chance that it might – this is Donadoni, after all – but that would be a major mistake. Daniele’s skill set combined with his grit and determination will ultimately be the key to winning the battle in midfield. Number 10 should, and most likely will, play every game from the start.
Alberto Aquilani
The wildcard. He may start or he may spend most of the tournament on the bench. If he plays we all know what he’s capable of, which is probably close to or just short of Gigi Buffon’s expectations of him: see Gigi thinks Alberto can be the best midfielder in the world someday soon (future recruiter, he is). Perhaps he’s just impressed that much in training camp? Which of course leads one to believe that Alberto will be in the starting XI come the 9th of June, or at the very least will make his way in before the tournament is over, but we shall have to wait and see.
Simone Perrotta
His ratio of coach appreciation to fan appreciation is off the charts, and he’s one of the prime examples of why coaches are in the spots they are and fans are watching from home. His off the ball movement, workrate and stamina are second to none. If you can’t have otherworldly, Totti-type talent, he’s the next best thing. And for all of Donadoni’s shortcomings, I think he’s come to realize this. It just all depends on how Donadoni wants to work the midfield. Perrotta can play in a more central role, the treq position he performs for Roma or even on the wings as he was used under Lippi and in the late stages of this season.
I honestly have no idea how much he’ll play, with part of that being a credit to his versatility. And while he may not be in the sexiest XI, he just might be in the best XI, and that’s all that matters.
Logic says one of Aquilani (more likely) or Perrotta (less) should be in the starting XI, but when has logic ever figured into The Don’s thinking?

I’d like to see this lineup at some point:
4-3-2-1—————–Gigi
Panucci-Cannavaro-Barzagli-Zambrotta
——-DDR——Pirlo—-Gattuso
————ADP——-Cassano
—————–ToniPerrotta could step in for del piero or Cassano if Donadoni doesn’t trust them

If ADP starts, on the wing no less, I’m flying to Swissaustria and kneecapping Donadoni. That is all.

If Donadoni could channel his inner Spalletti, the lineup would look like this…
Gigi
Panucci-Cannavaro-Barzagli-Zambrotta
DDR-Pirlo-Aquilani
Camoranesi-Cassano
TonigolI’m not sure how it would work bcuz people might step on each other’s toes, especially in midfield since the Argie and Cassano both like to drift in and out and drop back to receive the ball. However, it could just be the recipe for the creation of the most samba style football to ever hit the Euros. Plus it gives you the ability for 4-5 guys (Pirlo, Aquilani, Cassano, Camoranesi, DDR) to absolutely drop delicious haymakers from 30 yards. You lose that ability to score freakish strikes with Ambro and Rino. This lineup will never ever happen though and is only a dream of mine.

Well, Trappatoni was convincing in qualifiers, but both of his tournament appearances sucked, and they never peaked. Maybe Donadoni will be the opposite…right.
I’ll supply the materials for kneecapping for you both.

What about:
———–Buffon———–
Zambro–Canna–Barzagli–Grosso
———DDR—-Pirlo———
—Aquilani——–Perrotta—
——–Toni—-Cassano——-Posted from

I would put Di Natale in over Perrotta though.

Di Natale can play that spot, and he has creative abilities that Perrotta doesn’t have, especially when it comes to games that aren’t blown wide open. Perrotta typically needs an open game to thrive.

I really can’t invest too much faith in rumors the america media kicks up about european football clubs. Danny Szetela anyone?
Off Topic:
There are all these tidbits of action from Ben Arfa in every game this season, and I notice one thing. Whether or not Ben Arfa is having a good game, he gets double teamed, and he is not affraid of anyone. You can teach a man to pass, but you can’t teach him to take on 4 defenders at a time. I would take him at Roma any day.

here’s what i think will be the starting line-up in various formations (442 or 443 being more orthodox options for donadoni)
4231 formation:
buffon
zambrotta–cannavaro–chiellini–grosso
pirlo–de rossi
camoranesi–cassano–di natale
tonihowever, the romanista in me would like to see this set up on the 3/4 line:
camoranesi–aquilani–cassano
442 formation
buffon
zambrotta–cannavaro–chiellini–grosso
camoranesi–pirlo–de rossi–perrotta (cassano)
toni–di natale433 formation:
buffon
zambrotta–cannavaro–chiellini–grosso
camoranesi–pirlo–de rossi
cassano
toni–di natalePosted from

zach, the problem i see with putting di natale in perrotta’s spot is that it skews the balance of the lineup with little coverage on the defensive side of the ball. it basically leaves alot on ddr’s shoulders (outside of the defenders). grosso is notorious for his offensive surges on the wing and i think proper coverage is required there defensively to allow grosso to get as forward as he does. obviously much would depend on who the opposition is along that flank as well. that’s why i chose to put cassano in brackets in my 442 lineup. a less conservative set-up and modest opponent might have room for cassano or di natale in front of grosso.

Unfortunately I don’t think the schedule will allow for any less-than-conservative lineups. Group O’Death and should that go well, you start talking about knockout teams.
The most experimental lineup we’ll see will be Friday against Belgium.

lamagica is right about the need for coverage on Grosso. And as much as I love what Fabio does in blue, I’d rather have the luxury of putting a premier attacker a bit higher than more surging runs from a fullback.

Sorry I missed the whole “takeover” debate. I actually HAVE a job. What the hell do the rest of you do? Damn I’m jealous. Anyway, let me add my 2 cents.
Chris, I get your points and the are valid. The one flaw in your arguement is that you seem to very convinced about how this will play out when in fact, there are many different possibilities. Its POSSIBLE, that Taco uses some Soros money to buy Rosina, Vargas and Gomes and keep our current stars happy. Its POSSIBLE that Joe completely intends to keep his day job and allow Conti, Spalletti, Prade and Rosella keep theirs. Its possible that Taco believes the best way to be a consistently winning team is to keep developing the youth system, keep a solid core and spend money to fill in gaps. These things are POSSIBLE. I don’t KNOW that they will become reality. It might be that he plans on using Soros money to buy big star after big star and sell off true Romanisti to ultimately “buy” championships.” If that happens, I will be disappointed but I have no reason to believe that will happen.
The true Romanisti will always be true Romanisti. I have no fear of that. Yes there may be drodes of fair weather Roma fans when Roma start winning more and have much better marketing, but they will be like the new wave of Red Sucks fans that we can all smile at and move on. The current Romanisti will be just as passionate as ever, just happier.
I am the first to admit that there is a risk in this takeover. It might be the best thing that ever happened to Roma and it might not be. What I am confident of is what Gabriella said, that if Sensi stay, we WILL lose our Mexes’ and Vucinic’s and Aquilani’s and we will NOT be able to replace them with anybody near their quality. If Sensi stay, we better all get very comfortable with praying for UEFA cup appearances after this year.
You say that you are for the selling of Roma, but just not to these clowns. Where are the better offers? I haven’t heard any. My guess is that Unicredit want Sensi to sell now. My other guess is that if Sensi do not sell now, they won’t sell for another year and alot of damage can be done in a year.
I believe that our choices are A) go with an unknown that can be great, good, mediocre or bad, or B) Go with something that WILL be bad. I vote for A. I don’t hate the Sensi’s. They did a tremendous amount for Roma, however at this point, given their financial state and the financial state of Italpetroli, the best thing they can do for Roma is sell the club to a Roma fan that has money to keep our core players and buy a few greats to plug in the gaps and let the societa (Conti and co.) do their thing.
Come sempre, FORZA ROMA!!!!
