Elefanti & The Sicilian Fortress
By: chris | December 20th, 2008
Catania v Roma
This is without a doubt one of my least favorite fixtures each year. For some odd reason Catania, though a severely limited team, punches way above their weight at home, and this year is no different. Actually, it may be a bit different: they’re punching about seven weight classes above their weight. Eight home fixtures, four dropped points of a possible twenty-four. That’s good, for those mathematically challenged. Incredibly good for a squad which only managed to avoid the drop on the ultimate day of the season last year. A day which…nevermind.
Fortunately Catania has only beaten one team of note at home, with a victims list looking a bit something like this: Genoa, Atalanta, Chievo, Palermo, Cagliari & Torino. Not exactly a murderers row, and Genoa was pre-Milito Genoa in August – big, big difference – so maybe no teams of note. More so, their lone home loss was to Udinese (2-0) and the draw a 1-1 sister smooching with Lecce. All of which makes the 6-1-1 a touch less impressive when magnified a bit.
Couple this with the fact that all the big guns who’ve made this current Roma run what it is will be playing and you see how a Sicilian fortress may still allow a giallorosso win. Doni’s groin is feelin’ loose, and we know Il Capitano is always feelin’ loose, so the entire lot is in Sicily as we speak, ready to do the business.
I suspect Spalletti will go in with a “let’s end this year on a high note” speech after all the drama (Calciopoli II, Soros, Il Presidente, AS Hospital Ward, etc) and I suspect they will. Catania will be okay, though. They’ll find a way to forget their sorrows and boost morale.

Projected XI

If he was as lightning again on Wednesday as the hype would seem to indicate, Menez may get 90. Other than that, should be the standard.
Predictions
I predict Catania’s home record looks an awful lot more like “playing crappy teams at home” than “fortress”. I also predict I will have real, proper posts once the holidays are over. That is, provided I’m not institutionalized in the meantime – as anyone going home for the holidays can empathize. Promise.

We haven’t had a single Totti for a few years now. Ilary had something to say about that.

We just could not match Catania’s desire to win. Would not blame anyone from our boys; shit happens!
Happy holidays, everyone.

Udinese losing to Milan 5-1? In the middle of nowhere called Poland, fans of Lech Poznan* are probably very happy…
*a little hint. Udinese and Lech are to fight in the UEFA Cup

highlights? there were any? link unclicked. Today was the first game I actually considered stopping watching. Not because we were losing, but because it was just such an ugly game to watch.

And no Ambrosini neither. Him and Becks would’ve made it 10-0.

Baptista is rubbish, always said he was, always will be. Flopped at his previous two CL clubs…what did you expect?

I always hated asian soccer players. But now more than ever.

So we’re gonna see the Beckham AC Milan huh?
I guess Im in the minority in liking him and thinking he can still be a useful player. He’s kind of like bringing in an aging three point shooter to a contending basketball team missing one last piece.
the real question will be how long this temporary “loan” will actually last

Gee Alessio thanks for your two cents.
How long will Totti be out?
Me thinks 2 or 3 weeks.

Ancelotti just said he may field Becks in Rome. Nice.

Daniele……I’m holding you to that.
Samson, you’ve been talking to d’agostino too much. Sissoko has been an absolute beast since his arrival. Outclassed De Rossi about two months ago, if I remember correctly.
Poulsen is like Baptista…a mediocre signing that we both hope will come good. The difference, among others, is that Poulsen was signed as backup.

alessio,
Poulsen would never be selected for the selecao, not even if he was the last footballer left on the planet and managed to get a brasilian passport + managed to bend fifa rules. I wouldnt even call him for a for a 5 a side game on the beach if my team was a man down.

for fabregas, median cruciate ligament = mcl
Grade I MCL Tear This is an incomplete tear of the MCL. The tendon is still in continuity, and the symptoms are usually minimal. Patients usually complain of pain with pressure on the MCL, and may be able to return to their sport very quickly. Most athletes miss 1-2 weeks of play.
Grade II MCL Tear Grade II injuries are also considered incomplete tears of the MCL. These patients may complain of instability when attempting to cut or pivot. The pain and swelling is more significant, and usually a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary.
Grade III MCL Tear A grade III injury is a complete tear of the MCL. Patients have significant pain and swelling, and often have difficulty bending the knee. Instability, or giving out, is a common finding with grade III MCL tears. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort, and healing may take 6 weeks or longer.
its probably grade 2 or 3
