Derby Woes

By: chris | April 12th, 2009

A terrible loss to a terrible team after a terrible performance.

The blame game: Roma put themselves on their own back foot, Doni’s knees weakened and forced the entire squad to stumble backwards and Morganti put the finger in the chest which sent them toppling over.

i. Doni must go. He’s too typically Brazilian: prone to jaw-dropping saves and calamitous mistakes. Sure, a good, solid keeper may not have the wow-factor and he may not transform draws into wins, but most other keepers won’t snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Bring back Curci, bring in Marchetti or bring in someone else entirely. Just bring in a keeper from somewhere other than Brazil, eh?

ii. I’m really at a loss for words regarding the transition from first half to second half. Outside of that opening 5 minute onslaught, Roma whipped Lazio from pillar to post. The entire team was vastly superior. Then they opened up the second half just as the first. What gives? Did Spalletti’s dismissal really have that great an effect on the morale of the side? And how did the individual performances drop so dramatically from half to half? The only change was Spalletti – and Lazio certainly aren’t good enough to change the game – so the only conclusion we can draw is something in their mentality changed as a result of the sending off.

iii. A lot of blame is being heaped on the 4-2-3-1 in the press, it seems, but without a doubt the best player on the pitch in the opening 45 minutes was Julio Baptista, a square peg thrust into the circular hole of the left wing in Spalletti’s beloved. Is he as effective playing centrally? Maybe, maybe not. But it was very much a tale of two halves and had it been two first halves, opening five still withstanding, the return of the 4-2-3-1 would be praised to the highest of heavens.

iv. This team’s lack of mental preparedness – that ‘blackout’ factor – continues to crop up at the most important of times and it appears to be the reflection of a certain someone. Read into that what you will.

v.
And finally, Morganti and his crew really fucked this team from the start. Roma deserve a great deal of credit for Lazio’s win, but Morganti is right up there with them. (As ever, this ‘win’ was in no way the result of anything Lazio did.) The first Lazio goal was clearly a goalkick, not a corner. How was Panucci sent off when Lichtensteiner was the instigator and Panucci just sat there with his arms aloft after attempting to be civil with the lazie before being grilled? How is that right to show both a yellow when the receiver who did nothing but stand there in return is sent off while the other only carries a yellow? A six year old has enough reasoning to realize this. Why was Mexes sent off with a straight red for being slapped and separating a quarrel? A dirty look? Because that’s all there was. Who was that yellow to in the 79th minute for Brocchi’s foul? Because it didn’t show up post-game but it sure as hell showed up in the game. If it had been to the guy who committed the foul, Brocchi had his second and he was off. How do you explain sending off a team’s two centerbacks for no good reason while not sending off a second yellow? And not only does this effect Roma for this week, but next week and the week after and then the week after.

Best case scenario it’s serious incompetence and Morganti should never, ever be allowed to ref a derby of any sort again. Roma did their own work digging the hole, but Morganti was equally as guilty.

And with this we can draw the conclusion that we already knew heading in: Lazio is a nothing team, a nothing club and they can’t win a result unless it’s rolled out on a red carpet by the other team and they’re carried to the entrance by the official.

While I’d love to see Amelia here, I fear it’s a bit of a fantasy because I can’t see Palermo selling him to us cheaply.

Okay, I’ll go back to dreaming it could happen now and forget that reality intruded for a moment there.

I like ale’s young 11 and best is,we don’t need to buy anyone! Only loans and co-ownerships.
Curci is on a co-owner ship right? I think we can beat Siena easily in the summer. Definetly if Doni’s out for 10+ million

Jonas, Goal.com reports that aquilani strained a thigh muscle walking out of the bank after he cashed his most recent check. It was more than it had been before, so it was too heavy, and Aquilani will now be out until 2035.

Jacob, I went to Trigoria last week before the derby, and there was a lot of love for Mexes even before the talk of a transfer. The gates are covered in fan graffitti, most for Totti, but a lot for Mexes and DeRossi too.

Trigoria is in an odd place, way outside of Rome in a bunch of fields. A bus takes you right there, and as I got off the bus, somoene was herding sheep through the parking lot and on the two lane road. Kind of rustic I guess.

I did get a lot of autographs and pictures. Conti and Spalletti came out and talked to us and I got a great pic of me with Spalletti. And Perrotta ran over my toes in his Maserati. It didn’t hurt, but it left a mark on my band new white shoes.

We should sell Doni and bring back both Amelia & Curci, then let both of them train hard and compete to be our 1st GK.

Even though Genoa may lose 3 points today, I know Roma’s chances for 4th are less than slim. That is logically speaking. But cant help clinging on to the really slim hope. The terrible optimism of the footie fan.

Is it too much to ask for Udinese to come thru for us tomorrow vs Viola?
We get 3 tomorrow and all the talk of the CL spot being gone will be finished

Never talk about 4th again until we really have a real chance to grab it. Let us just focus on our own game.

Very serious Yazan, because of involvement in other sports, goal keepers in North America develop some of the best hand-eye coordination skills for that position.

As Serie A fans, we really have a dilemma about what we want more- more consistency and success in Europe or a more interesing and competitive league. I am beginning to strongly agree with the people who think that both together are not feasible. The top 4 (rather 2,3,4- with Inter’s dominance/luck/whatever) spots are a real dog-fight in Serie A, unlike EPL where somehow teams contrive to keep Arsenal and Lvpool in the top 4 every year even after not-great league form. Teams get better in Europe in terms of temparament, strategy etc only if they play every year- even a one year hiatus may be a big setback, as may be Milan will find out.

funny you should talk about no name teams roma, when was the last time you won the scudetto??? Back when you had capello thats right, and speaking of scudetti we should soon have 17 while you can suck on your miserable three, the reason why you never win anything is because after you lose every single match you always blame the ref for it instead of accepting the fact that you deserved to lose and then learn from it. Go ahead keep blaming refs cuz right now its your team that looks like the no name team, if lazio are such a bad team how does one lose to them 4-2??? And dont bring up 5 maggio cuz if you do remember this roma 0 inter 4!!!!!! yeah you’re good at complaining and protesting, that pretty much sums up your team right there, enjoy the uefa cup next year, I’ll be so glad that we dont have to deal with your arrogant fans gloating about how they beat real madrid and lyon and how we couldn’t beat the 5 time european champions and the reigning european champions, come really, you make it sound like your victories were so special, who hasnt beaten real madrid and lyon? And your win against chelsea was only cuz of scolari, we all know what would have happened had hiddink been in charge.
