Continental Tour: Mexicans, Frenchmen & Brazilians, Oh My.
By: chris | August 19th, 2008
Bad Dates & A Mexican
Say you’ve decided to finally ask a lovely young lass out to an evening of splendor. No expense spared, no luxury too lavish. She is, after all, the catch of a lifetime. Beautiful, intelligent, sweet as a southerners charm - and never with a boyfriend. Some call her The Other Shoe, but you think them to be simply jealous. At your haute cuisine provider of choice, all seems to be moving along marvelously. The lass is a fine date and the jewel of many an eye around the room, making the evening all the more spectacular. Food arrives and the divine seafood risotto almost makes you forget the lass. Almost. At which point - and you know where this is going - the evening takes a slight nosedive. She asks for the ketchup. And not just the ketchup, but specifically “Heinze 57“. Knowing full well she’s a Republican, this must mean one of two things: she has absolutely no class whatsoever or she’s lying to you about her political stances to get you in bed. Both of which are inexcusable (politics are not a joking matter, after all), but you decide to shrug it off. But then she burps. While in the middle of a conversation about her ex-boyfriend. Who was never really her “boyfriend”, but just some guy who mysteriously had to sell all his possessions and move to northwest Mongolia within weeks of meeting her. All of which she doesn’t understand. And then she says without blinking, “I don’t care what you say or do, we’ll never not be together” before jumping on the table and firing rolls around the room like a drunken chimpanzee.
This results in you hurdling tables like an Olympic sprinter with zero abandon for physical well-being towards the exit. The other shoe had not dropped, but been fired point blank into the ground from a cannon. That’s what Nery Castillo is. He’s the other shoe, but not dropped - hurtled down in a fit of fiery rage. He’s Cassano, but not nearly as talented and more disruptive on the pitch, not just off. He’s a bout of cancer served with a touch of AIDS. He’s an athlete destined for a static career of wowing with modest clubs before duping big clubs into making a move despite his character before said character lands him back with a modest club desperate for talent regardless of personality in one or two years time, resuming the cycle. He is, for all intents and purposes, useless.
In fact, were I asked to name five players to never ever, ever ever play for Roma from now until the end of history, I’d put him top three. Which is why this business is epically baffling. Like, more than any other seemingly legitimate rumor I’ve encountered in my time as a sports fan. I could more easily solve the meaning of life, the Riemann hypothesis or, gasp, women, than I could this.
The problem is Spalletti loves team guys. Not just loves, actually - requires them. After the Cassano debacle, can anybody blame him? And Mancini leaving? You’d be foolhardy to argue against Amantino’s attitude playing some part in his dismissal. So with that, where does NC stand?
Castillo had only played in a few games for Shakhtar when in a league match versus FC Naftovyk-Ukrnafta Okhtyrka, Shakhtar won a penalty kick. Castillo refused to give the ball to official penalty kick-taker Cristiano Lucarelli and took the penalty himself, which was saved. Castillo was immediately substituted from the game. Coach Mircea Lucescu commented “What Castillo did, from a professional point of view, I’ve never seen anything like it before in my whole life. There will be some measures taken against Castillo”. He has not played a game for Shakhtar since.
A moment, reportedly one of many throughout his brief career thus far, where Nery whipped out his special pink tutu and embraced his inner princess.
Can you imagine Senor Castillo doing this to Gesu Totti? Actually, another question: Would you like to know why Mauro Esposito was really bought? Because in a moment like this, Mauro would be in the upper deck of the Olimpico with a sniper rifle putting a bullet smack in the middle of Castillo’s unibrow.
I don’t get it. The only possible explanation which is currently bounding around my little brain right now is that Nery’s agent heard the Roma rumors and is using the press to drive up his client’s price for Real Betis or whomever else is waiting in the shadows right now. (Cisco Roma, maybe?) Or he could’ve even planted the rumor himself to stoke the Spanish fire. Plausible? Yeah, sure. Wouldn’t be the first time, certainly won’t be the last. Possible? I dunno. What I do know is this makes absolutely no sense and my head hurts now, so you’ll have to decide amongst yourselves.
Edu.
Here’s what I - via Wikipedia - have to say about this rumor:
There are a number of footballers nicknamed Edu, including, but not limited to:
* Eduardo Antunes Coimbra, Brazilian footballer, born 1947
* Jonas Eduardo Américo, Brazilian footballer, born 1949
* Eduardo César Gaspar, Brazilian footballer playing in La Liga for Valencia, born 1978
* Luís Eduardo Schmidt, Brazilian footballer, born 1979
* Eduardo Gonçalves de Oliveira, Brazilian footballer, born 1981
* Eduardo Luis Abonizio Souza, nickname Edu Dracena, Brazilian footballer born 1981 in Dracena
* Eduardo Delani, Brazilian footballer, born 1981
* Chinedu Ogbuke, Nigerian footballer, born 1986
* Maurice Edu, American footballer, born 1986
Fucking number yourselves or something, because whenever I see “Roma vuole Edu” in a headline I have a seizure.
Edu, whichever one he is, seems to be way down the list of Brazilians who are good, though not that good, but who Roma will only settle for in the event that they miss the top targets. Co-chairing that board are Nene and Thiago Neves. That is all for now.
* - And right before I was about to post this, I eyed this little nugget from the front page: Edu is out for a month with a hamstring issue. So feel free to knock this guy off the list. Or bump him up.
Collection Time
Speaking of seizures, everybody see this little nugget?
Il club giallorosso ha inviato un emissario sabato sera per seguire le prestazioni dei giocatori del Monaco Nenè, soprattutto, Jérémy Menez. Costo dell’operazione: dieci milioni di euro.
Ten? Really? And now begins the first ever Roma Offside Mercato Collection Drive. We can scratch up ten mil, right?
Belgians, Too.
Moussa Dembele has been tearing up the Olympics (apparently) and has thus put himself on the radar of a number of clubs, Roma supposedly being one of them.
Kid doesn’t even have a YouTube compilation. What fucking good is he? Moving on.
(Somebody should do a study of the number of transfer rumors during tournaments and weigh them against normal time. I’ll go ahead and guess they shoot up during those tourneys.)
La Bestia Arrives
And he brought a WAG.

What do they say your only as good as the people you associate with. Move on to bigger and better pastures my friend. Maybe Lazio?

the violent shit is embarassing not only for roma, not only for italian soccer, but for global soccer as a whole, because it happens everywhere and there really is no place in the game for it……

Firstly im sorry giro that our fan problems our heavily publicised, because they occur around important european events such as the champions league which correct me if im wrong but you havent even smelt for god knows how long.
And secondly being an american i cant say i have ever associated with violent ultras, and im sure that goes for most everyone on this board.

Ummm … Giro you seem to be ‘associating with’ Roma fans since you’re hanging out here.

Rome not built in a day, Roma not built it 2 months and 2 weeks. let’s hope the final 2 weeks fulfill needs and builds La Roma.
Forza Forza Forza ROMA

I don’t know why you would think Lazio are bigger and better pastures? They finished 1 place below you.
And no.. You are not as good as the people you associate with. That’s just stupid. A person is as good as they choose to be.. If they choose to go out stabbing people then they should be locked up. I choose to be a good Christian and live my life that way. Just because we support the same team it doesn’t mean we have anything else in common.
By that logic I can say that the Roman ultras are Italian and you are Italian so you are no better than them. Painting everyone with the same brush is how generalizations and racism happens.

On a real note I hope you do well in the CL because I cant stand the EPL. I also think your organization has a good youth program. But when it comes to Serie A I have no love for the big teams.

that’s why we aren’t a big team

On another note DDR played well in the friendly today (man of the match in my opinion) while Aquilani needs to be less shy and ask for the ball more often, i hate it when he vanishes for little periods only to bounce back in with a “rabona” pass. I’m curious to know if you guys think we can capture Meneze before the start of the season.

hahhahahahahhahahhahahahahhahahahhaha
“big team”……
*sigh*have you not been paying attention this mercato?

I’m still having doubts about Menez being a good buy. He’s super quick off the dribble and will definitely make the highlight reels. However, I’m not sure if he has enough experience to be able to finish in serie A.
The deal for Obinna seem to be progressing with little hitch, but I know virtually nothing about him. Anyone care to enlighten me with some of his strengths/weaknesses/stats? Thanks.Posted from

All I have to say is Forza Roma, i’m not going to argue, the one thing I know, that i’m lucky to have my blood multicolor well, acually two colores, red and yellow. i said that before, We already won, before even we start playing, just because we are Romanisti. Forza Roma

We’re a big team.. But we’re not on the level of Inter, Milan or Juve historically.

AMEN, BASSY!
that’s the best thing i’ve heard in a while on this board. geez louise with all the “realism.”GIALLOROSSI PER SEMPRE

in response to F;lackAttac’s question;
i played football (soccer, what ever you want to call it) when i was younger and had some mixed feelings about it - i liked it sometimes, mostly when i liked the other player i was playing with. in 1990 i saw part of the world cup and fell in love with the Azzurri. in 1991 i moved to Rome where i studied for a year and fell in love with the city and the people and would continue to return there periodically. i continued to follow world cup football pretty avidly and when i saw Totti finally play i was awed. when i met my friend Salvatore, an insane taxi driver and Roma fan, we almost got into an accident in piazza Barberini when Roma scored a goal and Salvatore decided to celebrate … excessively. a couple of weeks later he invited me over to watch a game with his friends. Great pasta, some good doobie. i finally saw Totti play in a Roma shirt and i was sold.Posted from

i have to say also that i for one am glad to have other fans like Giro on the page - i think it adds breadth and depth and an alternative opinion…which i have to say is right sometimes.
i.e.: some of you optimists who are too week to handle a little critical analysis need to take your diapers off grow up and become real men. i love a lot of the optimism here but often you ‘Roma optimists’ are overlooking some big issues.

Carlangelo, gio libertino & the rest…
That is awesome! I love hearing how others “became” Romanisti! I was curious, because it is so easy for people abroad to bandwagon the other teams (J, M & I) because they get more play on the air on the world stage, but that is changing now.
I see some posts from people who may have never even set foot in Italy and it makes me proud to see how fanatic they can be about our beloved Roma.
Keep it up ragga’ and lets kick some ass this year!

Ah FlackAttack — I became Romanista in a large part because of Rome. (they *are* the only Roman team, right?)
Only started following calcio after the 1994 World Cup and Rome was already my favourite city, (I also studied Roman art and architecture) so then I started watching weekly calcio every Sunday. Roma caught my eye so I ‘liked’ them then. Was out of the calcio loop for a while (early days of the internet it wasn’t as easy to follow — even for news– as now if you didn’t get the games on tv) Then, in the Euros 2000, Totti caught my eye and my Roma love became fullfledged. (obsession?) I’ve been to Rome several times, but due to timing, never was there for a game. Remedied that situation by attending the Coppa Italia final in May.

gio, if you are including me in the ‘roma optimists’ list, i hope this will say it once and for all (as well as other pessimists)…we are roma fans after all and you have the right to be a pessimist just much as i have the right to be optimistic. anyway nothing personal, i am just writing to explain why i’d rather be optimistic than pessimist.
first of all, since when do we have the ability to compete with inter, juve and milan financially? we have never signed a top player, as far as i can remember. The reason we were challenging for the scudetto last season is our homegrown player who rise thru the rank and become a star (totti-derossi)(aqui - maybe?) also players with potential who with time rise to become a star (mexes). So to really complain about this mercato, you have to compare it in relativity with those we have in previous seasons… mancini, we signed from venezia. taddei, from siena and they were unheard of when we sign them. It is after they joined roma that they become the mancini and taddei we know. but we never had the ability to sign christian vieri for 100 million. roma can never afford that. the last big signing i can remember is cassano, but what happened to that?
the thing is, if you are suddenly complaining that milan signed ronaldinho, juve signed amauri (i believe we did try to sign him and he chose juve, for obvious reasons) and inter have 3 layers of squad aren’t you already used to that for the last nth years? it has always been like that?. and personally i prefer the means we are currently using to achieve success, rather than buying kaka for 100 million and cristiano ronaldo with another 100. You can see how the financial crisis / transfer embargo was a blessing in disguise. How would players like derossi - aqui - aleandro rosi rise to first team? because it’s easier to buy. but then you have to remember, easy come easy go. we all knew the potential gaetano d’agostino had and cesare bovo was madly upset that roma didn’t sign him in the co-ownership. they’re in the nazionale now. don’t anybody regret that?
from what i understand all the problems roma is facing:
not winning scudetto/not winning cl/being the sixth strongest team in the league, all can be solved with signing somebody for 10 - 20 million. do they work like a magic spray? they come and we suddenly are not the sixth team anymore? buying player is an effort and not a guarantee. similar to promoting a youngster to the first team, its an effort. the result, god knows. So what i’m saying is that the team basis that we got is more important than the 1 or 2 player we sign/need. and even after my lengthy explanation of the reason we signed baptista, you still see him as a big team scrap from madrid, that is downright baseless pessimism. you have judged him even before he stepped on the field. thats unfair. even i agree, we need one more signing, but thats not what AS ROMA revolves around, its not like our world is gonna crumble if that didnt happen…everybody should have the right to complain, even i am not happy with the mercato thus far. but, just don’t get too annoying to the point that saying we’re only mid table material, that’s ridiculous and not even funny. its okay for anybody to dream, but in making the dream a reality you have to be realistic.
and if it is the management of rosella and prade is what ur unhappy about, can you please stop whining and table a bid already? whether you like it or not, the team is under their control and nobody (-the law) can force them to sell what is theirs. and they don’t even force you to support the team that they own. i’m not saying i like it, but face it the team belong to them. and believe me, if you have a realistic effort to replace the current regime with another with as much love for the team and more money to lay i will support you, but whining in here is aint going nowhere…
what i’m saying here, it’s okay to dream but in hoping that it become reality, be realistic. Its okay to complain, but if that’s all you ever do (like eminem singing about his mother and kim) it gets annoying. its okay to criticize the team and others on this blog so that we can improve, but dont do so out of frustration.
i rest my case,so lets stop this optimists/pessimists talk, lets all be roma fans again, forza roma!

actually, why don’t we wait till end of May and then throw shit at eachother wouldn’t we?
like I said, last year in Spain everyone thought Barca with their Fab 4 would win la liga again..they didn’t even won one single price this season!
Everyone last year thought Inter would once again ‘walk’ through serie A but Roma were fucking champions 45min from the end of the season!
Ronaldinho,Amauri,Mourinho or not,you show what you’re worth on the field!
I believe saying as a Roma fan,we will end in top 2 again is far from a shame! In fact,it is more common sense seeing our last 2 seasons were rather ‘magical’ with the budget and the purchases of this Roma.
Methinks Palermo/Juve… are just frustrated cauz they bought so many new players again but still end up behind us (and with quite some points).Posted from
