Chivu Imminent (Again) & Other Stuff

First and foremost, a happy birthday to the man, the myth, the legend, Daniele De Rossi. The scary part? He’s only 24 and isn’t even close to his prime. It’s also a shame how underrated he is amongst the casual fans, although it’s part of the job description for defensive midfielders (even though he is technically a box-to-box mid). They’re the offensive and defensive lineman of calcio, doing all the dirty work but never getting their due credit. At least Roberto Donadoni realized this, and hopefully he’ll own that No. 10 shirt for the rest of his Azzurri career. Although some people think he has a threat from none other than Alberto Aquilani. It’s going to be good to be a Roma fan for the next ten years or so. One of the few videos dedicated to Daniele, and a great one for that matter. There isn’t a midfielder on the planet I’d take over DDR. No, I’m not biased whatsoever.

Chivugate:

It’s been reported that there has been another extension offer to Chivu, which I’m not sure I buy for a second. Although the Becali brothers are supposed to be in town today to rob a bank and then go slap orphaned babies, because they’re just classy guys like that. Unless Rosella ups the offer significantly (doubt it), this will be Chivu’s last season in a Roma kit – if that. But wait. Apparently there was a super-secret meeting held in an underground bunker between Rosella Sensi and Massimo Moratti, and reportedly Marco Andreolli is the hang-up for the transaction. Supposedly Moratti (or Mancini) doesn’t want to let him go, and Roma is insisting upon at least a part of him in any deal. Wait, now they’ve supposedly agreed to a cash only deal for €15m and the transaction will be completed at some point tomorrow, with Chivu inking a deal for years worth roughly €3.5m per year.

Excuse me? €3.5m per annum? You mean he’d be taking less than the Roma offer after performance bonuses? Less than Real Madrid’s offer which would’ve seen him move out of Serie A and net Roma an extra €3m, not to mention a month without all of his shenanigans? Wait, Chivu will take a €1m per year pay cut just so he can move to Milan?

This is all a lot of speculative reporting, so I’m going to hold off judgement until the truth comes out. But if it’s true, Chivu just became the most hated person at the Olimpico, and a Grade A scumbag in my book. I don’t know if he’s a mercenary or just an all-around jackass now.

But at this point, I’m going to need to see a written contract in blood, because this is about the 5,983rd time he’s been headed to Inter within the next 24 hours.

Other Stuff:

I) If Chivu is in fact moved within the next 24 hours, I would expect an announcement regarding the arrival of Francesco Modesto shortly thereafter. This guy is the mistress who’s been hanging around while waiting for her married guy to get a divorce so that they can be together and live happily everafter. Then the divorce starts getting messy and it takes forever and he ends up running off the Mexico with the contents of their bank account in a ‘76 Camaro. Think about it. It makes sense. Or not.

II) It looks like there might still be a spot on the roster for Token Romanian Not Named Adrian Pit (Pronounced ‘Piz’). Ciprian Marica has inked with Stuttgart, which is good. Let them deal with the Becali brothers. If Chivu’s sold, then I’d expect we might see a banishment of nearly all Romanians from Roma for years to come. Kind of like Inter with Italians.

* – Provided the Becali monopoly holds true for the great majority of uber-talented Romanians.

III) Livorno now wants in on Matteo Brighi. Let’s just put it this way, any team that didn’t qualify for Europe last season is interested in Matteo. Cool? Cool. I still hope he sticks around.

IV) There are certainly some strange non-rumors floating around. Like where’s any interest for Shabani Nonda, Edgar Alvarez, Adrian Pit or Samuel Kuffour. Nonda they might actually keep so thy don’t have to go striker shopping and can use him as a 3rd stringer. Spalletti has mentioned Piz as being an option on the left but does anyone really expect him to play at all? Why isn’t he being sent out on loan? Kuffour is easy. No one wants him. Even though he is supposedly drawing interest from Greek and Turkish clubs. Which is code for “your career is over, buddy.”

V) I’m actually most surprised by the lack of Alvarez rumors. He isn’t ever going to have Arjen Robben talent on the wings, but he certainly brings a plus plus attribute to the equation. A team that was fighting relegation and isn’t exactly overflowing with talent couldn’t use someone like him? Especially at his price, probably close to a €1m or so. Messina rejected their option to sign him for €1.5-1.9m I believe. He’s really become surplus to requirements now with the speed and skill of Ludovic Giuly and Mauro Esposito coming in, not to mention Aleandro Rosi still seems to be hanging around. I’m sure he’ll be moved eventually, but there has been little to no news regarding any interest on him this summer. Maybe it’s because clubs saw the interview when he was asked how he runs so fast and he replied “burritos.” Nice. There are so many 2nd grade jokes there I can’t even begin to count, but I’ll spare you.

VI) I guess we can restart that Leandro Rinaudo rumor mill back up. He’s been on vacation for a few days. And is anyone else concerned that a team like Palermo, who isn’t exactly a big time club, is looking forward to selling him? Obviously he’s talented, Uncle Fester wouldn’t be interested in a defender under 47 unless he had special abilities, but still. Palermo couldn’t use a quality backup CB? Especially when he won’t be sold for big money? Smells a bit fishy to me. Although absolutely everything involving Maurizio Zamparini smells fishy. Who knows. It’s not as if Zamps is the king of awesome decision making, but I still have a few questions about this.

VII)
A pretty good article from ESPN on Totti and his departure from the Azzurri, as well as the media backlash he has suffered from everything he’s ever done throughout the years. The author makes some very good points from both sides of the argument, and I agree with a lot of what he says. Totti has certainly taken some unfair criticism from the media over the years, but there have been a few episodes where he hasn’t exactly helped himself. No need to go into detail there.

    Jeff,

I went through the same problems with the mac – the p2p systems don’t work. I did find though if you have an intel-based Mac (post iBook I think) you can get a Windows Parallels program which will allow you to run windows on your Mac and thus use any of the p2p sites. I think you can get them for relatively short money – $80 springs to mind but it could be as low as $40 – and just might be a good overall investment. Roma Addict is still a good call, but the parallel will work if you’re adamant about watching it in real time.

Does anyone know what colour Roma champions league jersey will be?

Also do you think Roma is still after cicinho?. This transfer market is driving me crazy , modesto is not really good news for me, so if the news is true with chivu gone and roma getting 15m , we should be getting maybe 2 more good players. One more thing does anyone know if Roma vs Bayern Leverkusen will be on tv?

Sorry I went off topic but these stuff consiner me and most romanisti.

Stefan, the Kappa guy said the CL kit will probably be dark blue or a very dark color.

As for Cicinho, I don’t know if the lack of news about Dani Alves going anywhere is good or bad. If he heads to Madrid I think we might see Cicinho in Rome. If not, then I would expect he’ll stay in Spain. Kind of a toss-up right now.

Yesterday I mentioned how Cassetti to Monaco might be a direct result of Roma going after another RB. Bada boom.

Secondo alcune indiscrezioni la secondo mossa della Roma sarà quella di aumentare il pressing su Cicinho, mentre per quanto riguarda il mercato in uscito Marco Cassetti potrebbe essere ceduto al Monaco.

Called the RB too. Go me. (not that it was all that difficult, but give me my moment)

I thought the third kit would be dark blue…or is that the same thing as the CL kit? I thought it was like an emergency jersey or something.

I think Modesto is underrated, that guy has a motor. He can play at LW and LB and is a very consistent player. Plus, he’s 25. For 2.5 mil for the co-own as a back-up it’s a pretty good deal.

As for the Cicinho thing, it’s really going to come down to how much Cici wants to come; whether he thinks he’ll get enough playing time, and just how BFFs he is with Doni, but yeah, I think we’re going to get at least one semi-big name with those 15m.

one day…..long time from now, undoubtedly…we will actually get to see all roma games off of ‘roma channel’. problem is, we don’t have any competency within roma’s marketing dept. to actually get the thing going properly even in italy, let alone via satellite across the world. we are talking about the same group of ‘movers and shakers’ that cant even manage to integrate english onto their official website. we are very much a “rometta” in that respect.

i share marco’s (and some other’s) frustration with respect to coverage. i am canadian and have access to a handfull of channels – telelatino, rai, foxsports, goltv – but there always seems to be some redundancy with the telecasts….all four channels will choose to simultaneously show inter-sanbenedettese yet not one of them would show roma despite the fact that it would be a more attractive game to watch (excuse my extreme bias that just reared its ugly head). i guess it just comes down to the obvious clout the ‘big’ teams have – larger fanbase across the world. i have learned to come to grips with it though, much like i have had to come to grips with the fact that i have to endure the pain of watching the toronto make-beliefs everytime i want to tune into hockey night in canada on cbc.

seriously, the online option is the best if you want to catch most, if not all of the roma games. before our match-up against man u in the cl, that was the only way i got to see any of our cl games.

chris – great read as always. i loved your jab at inter in reference to the banishment of romanians at roma. that was gold. the kuffour line was a close second.

Totti spat in the face of Denmark’s Christian Poulsen in a Euro 2004 first round match

Well Chris, my estimation of your boy just went up a good deal. Poulsen is an ass. He handed the Denmark – Sweden match to Sweden. *shakes head* I love my Swedes, but they should be able to win matches on their own!

I also can’t blame him for retiring from international competition. He has his World Cup, he has two young children and if he wants to play for many more years, perhaps he should cut back and conserve energy. Maldini set the example on that.

Just my opinion, maybe we should get Manuel Blasi as RB. Depsite he is a roma’s youth product, he also good in that position (RB), and already proved that he is a versatile player (can play both DM and RB position).

Just pulling your chain, George. It seems to me that some Romanisti are still living in denial about Totti’s role as a prima punta and Perrotta’s spot as a trequartista and so continue to dream of the acquisition of a high-profile striker. And I just don’t see any chance of that happening, certainly not under Spags’s guidance. So spending money to bring someone in who can battle it out with Vucinic to be Totti’s understudy seems to me strange business. Cicinho’s a much more interesting prospect, though I, for one, shall be very sad to see CC go whenever he does finally go.

I think a lot of people are looking to RSC for his overall versatility. While he isn’t ideal as a starter he can provide valuable cover for a few positions. He’s like a more adaptable Mirko. He was even considered by some as a potential Ballack replacement last year. Which is why a lot of people are throwing his name around should Roma find it necessary to buy up a forward. Not that it’s going to happen.

I’m so bloody tired with the whole Chivu saga, I just want it to end! I agree that Cichnho would be a good buy but from what I’ve read in the past he does not sound thrilled about a move to Roma. I don’t see room for another striker in spalletti’s line up ( just look how Vucinic and co. rode the pine!)but if Totti picks up an injury we are in trouble. I know the club has made a couple of good signings so far but does anyone else feel like the team is still missing something? If Roma want’s to compete in the Champions League and for the Scudetto we need top quality reinforcements. Also has anyone heard what’s going on with Mancini’s contract? sorry I know this was off topic.

But even in those terms, what does RSC really add? How valuable is that cover, really? As fifth-choice winger (or sixth, if Rosi stays)? As second-equal- or third-choice striker? Or as a kind of rough-edged, square-pegged back-up for the trequartista position for which he’s probably conspicuously less suited, given the way we’re used to having it played, than all of Perrotta, Aquilani, Taddei, and even Brighi? I just can’t see how it quite adds up.

I never said he fit, I just said that’s where people are placing him.

And if Roma wants to start competing on 3 fronts every year, then having great depth isn’t exactly a bad thing. Factoring in suspensions and obvious injuries, a jack of many trades would be welcome.

I have to agree with maro on the Roque Santa cruz issue. He really has’nt featured for Bayern Munich since their 2003/04 season. I know he’s had some injuries but the fact remains if he can’t break into Bayern’s first team why would we want their rejects no matter what the price tag?

Perhaps the interest in Mathieu will re-emerge if/when Chivu is sold. It seems, though, as though we’ve decided that Modesto is a better option or, at least, better value.

Chris, all I mean about RSC is that there are, surely, other targets about whom one might justifiably get more excited. RSC would be a better player than Okaka to have as the 25th member of the squad, if finances allowed, but that’s not very high praise. What about a true vice-Perrotta? A guy who could compete with him for that trequartista spot, who might make himself undroppable and force Spags to another tactical rethink?

According to Il Romanista, an agreement has been reached between Inter and Roma:

FJ, that’s my hope too. However, it’s a very hard role to play and I suspect the little eagle is more comfortable in Pizza’s role, as it were. He gets forward a bit more from there than Pizza and isn’t quite such a good regista (yet), but I do think he’d prefer to spend more of his time behind the ball, as it were. The trequartista, on the other hand, especially with Totti up top, spends more of his time running away from the ball and that’s a different and a trickier art.
