Champions League Special
By: chris | August 29th, 2007The Champions League draw is today (1800 CET, which translates to 6p Italian time or Noon here on the easter seaboard) and Roma is a two seed, meaning they’ll be supposedly the second best team in their group. For anyone who doesn’t know: There are four pots, or group. For each group, one team is picked from each pot and placed in the group. So there is a 1,2,3,4 seed in each group. Don’t ask me how the seedings work out, because it’s a highly complicated and strange system (like winning the UEFA Cup is apparently each to winning the CL - obviously, I mean duh). The schematics of the Champions League which, if Michel Platini has his way, will soon be replaced by 3 teams from each league and couple amateur sides from Southern France, because everybody needs to be represented. Anyway, this is how it works out, that is at least until G14 turns into G24 and decides to form a SupersuperLeague:
1st Seeds:
Milan (Serie A)
Internazionale (Serie A)
Real Madrid (La Liga)
Barcelona (La Liga)
Liverpool (EPL)
Chelsea (EPL)
Manchester United (EPL)
Arsenal (EPL)
2nd Seeds:
AS Roma (Heaven)
Valencia (La Liga)
Sevilla* (La Liga)
PSV Eindhoven (Dutch Eredivisie)
Benfica (Portugal)
Olympique Lyon (Ligue 1)
Werder Bremen (Bundesliga)
FC Porto (Portugal)
3rd Seeds:
Schalke 04 (Bundesliga)
Stuttgart (Bundesliga)
Celtic (Scotland)
Steaua Bucharest (Romania)
Sporting Lisbon (Portugal)
Olympique Marseille (Ligue 1)
CSKA Moscow (Russia)
Nathalie from The Facts of Life aka Lazyo (Hades)
4th Seeds:
Rangers (Scotland)
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
Besiktas (Turkey)
Olympiakos (Greece)
Dinamo Kiev (Ukraine)
Fenerbahçe (Turkey)
Slavia Praha (Czechoslovakia)
Rosenborg BK (Norway)
The actual point standings here, if you’re interested.
* - Sevilla is awaiting the conclusion of their game with AEK.

Round 1: September 18/19
Round 2: October 2/3
Round 3: October 23/24
Round 4: November 6/7
Round 5: November 27/28
Round 6: December 11/12
Games:
1st Match Day: 2 v 3 & 4 v 1
2nd Match Day:1 v 2 & 3 v 4
3rd Match Day: 3 v 1 & 2 v 4
4th Match Day: 1 v 3 & 4 v 2
5th Match Day: 2 v 1 & 4 v 3
6th Match Day: 3 v 2 & 1 v 4
My Ideal 4
1 Seed: Arsenal. Considering the loss of Titi and the fact that Jens Lehmann is making Doni look like Johnny Reliable lately, it’s fair to say Arsenal is the weakest of the first seeds. Backup Plan: Real Madrid. Don’t know why, Schuster just doesn’t convince me.
2 Seed: Roma, duh.
3 Seed: Steaua Bucharest. For some reason, I would just love to kick the shit out of somebody in the Becali family. I wonder why that is? Oh, whaddya know, cousin Becali - the most scumbaggish of them all - owns Steaua. Hmmm. Backup Plan: Sporting. Outside of Joao Moutinho and Liedson, I’m just not impressed.
4 Seed: Slavia Praha. I don’t know why, I just expect them to suck. A lot. Backup Plan: Rosenborg BK. Despite my love for all things Scandinavian (especially blonde, misfiring Swedes), any team from Norway is going to blow like Alicia Silverstone’s career post-Clueless. Seriously, she went from It to Not So Much in the span of a movie. She’s now playing characters named “Dee Dee” in made-for-tv movies, how low can one get? Basically, she’s Chivu 5 years from now (bada-boom).
Hell on Earth Draw:
1 Seed: Barcelona. The Roma backline may have improved, but that attack is just filty. Absolutely disgusting. It’s fantasy football in real life.
3 Seed: Marseille. Two words: Samir Nasri.
4 Seed: Shakhtar Donetsk, easy. Last year completely out of the picture, they have really improved their squad, and the season is still running so they’re in full form. Plus, despite the hullabaloo around the acquisition of Livorno’s favorite commie, they picked up the new Sheva this summer as well: Oleksandr Hladky. Last year’s leading goal scorer in the UPL and already has 6 in 6 games with Donetsk this season ( not to mention 4 in 11 games with the senior Ukrainian squad) and he just turned 20 less than a week ago. Seriously, remember this name. (Yeah, I love me some Ukrainian footy action - so what?)
Prediction:
Considering the 7 week gauntlet of calcio hell upcoming, an easy draw would be more than welcome, but I have a feeling Murphy and his damn laws are going to fuck with Roma. The predicted, but hopefully not happening, four:
1: CSKA London aka Chelsea
2: Roma
3: Stuttgart
4: Besiktas
Feel free to flip out if this comes true. Discuss.

I’ve decided.
I want Manc blood.
It can’t get much worse than 7-1 and if we even manage a draw at old Crapford and beat them at home, we will have gone a long way to redemption.
AND
If we beat them at Old Crapford, we have bragging rights.
If we get beat 3-0 (which won’t happen) we can say it’s not 7-1.
So bring on the Mancs

Hmm… it should be interesting.
Just to be nitpicking Chirs, but you forgot a team in your 2 seeds list: Benfica. Not that it really matters since we can’t draw them.

I’m already getting stick from Man USA supporters, saying they wish they draw Roma.
SO DO I!
I can’t take this.
Forza Roma

Barcelona / Arsenal
Roma
Schalke
RangersI feel that this year we got to prove ourselves against some big names this year in the group stage. Also, we generally have difficult groups in the CL.

Marseille is a hell on earth draw? Tell that to Nice or Nancy or Sally or whatever random french team they loose to. I’d say Barcelona, Schalke, and Shakhtar is a pretty bad one.
The best would be Arsenal, Steua (Marseille), Rosenborg(Slavia Prague)..

I was in a hurry! Don’t judge me! haha.. Damn Becalli.. I want to play Steaua, Man Utd, and Slavia Prague apparently for revenge purposes.. what have Slavia ever done to us?
I wish we could’ve played Levski Sofia.. My friend is a huge Levski fan and it would’ve been fun.

I still have that poster on the wall when Giannini scored the 2nd against Slavia long, long time ago. It’s still there in my room at my mom’s. Totti was just a boy…Great times!

It might be nice to “prove” themselves up against some big boys, but a draw with ManU/Barca/Chelsea, etc means a schedule like this…
Setp 18/19 - 3rd seed
Sept 23 - Juve
Sept 26 - Fiorentina
Sept 30 - Inter
Oct 2/3 - 1st seedSeriously, pray for an easy seed (and not for one of the Bundesliga 3 seeds). As good as Roma is, that’s 5 games in two weeks against the best Serie A and Europe has to offer. ManU might be nice for revenge, but we don’t want to see their name drawn. No matter how good you are, that run is as brutal as it gets. And when they’re good and exhausted that’s when the big EPL/La Liga guys show up. This Lega Calcio draw is looking sketchier and sketchier.

Yeeesh.. Schalke, Juve, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Barcelona.. I shudder to think.. Pick the easiest draw and it will still be very tough..
Steaua, Juve, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Arsenal

A random question, if AEK qualify ahead of Sevilla,
then the pot standings change, as some teams may move up a pot, and given this scenario the outcome of the draw will be different than the one with sevilla in pot 2. SO are they going to make 2 separate draws, or they’ll just assume that Sevilla will go throughPosted from

traian, i remember that game. i remember moriero. fun times indeed. maybe you’re right, slavia will be nice

I’m not sure Rosenborg BK is a great dream draw on general basis considering they knocked out Milan for a quarter-final spot back in 96 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League_1996-97) and won the group stage in 99 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League_1999-00#Group_A) but that’s a while ago and the current team is reportedly far far away from the level of the 90’s edition.

It’s not too bad of a draw, but sporting lisbon and dynamo kiev can be tricky, so hopefully roma wont get careless… forza roma!

It’s Manchester! There again but meet in the group.
Well, it seems a good chance to revenge. But whatever you say, I just don’t like it at all. The schedule has already made me shiver.
The reporter in china just said that Group B&C are groups of death. Well perhaps, I dunno. But look at Roma’s group, IMO it IS a group of death. Besides manu, plus Sporting and Dynamo, I don’t think it’s relatively easy even though I believe Roma is stronger than the two.
In brief, It is going to be tough, but Roma will get thru. I’m sure about that.

We’ll win both games against Sporting, beat Dinamo in Rome, tie with them in Ukraine.. And being realistic.. We’ll lose/draw at Old Trafford and win in Rome.

If AEK qualify, hell freezes over, and pigs fly… AEK will be a 2nd seed and make Arsenal’s group the easiest group in the HISTORY of European competition.

lets hope we dont have to play dynamo in a freaking snow storm…roma/man u is going to be some exciting football…the speed of both teams has increased…it could be a goal fest

I’m sure the lads crave Manc blood… hopefully our retaliation will be crushing.
If we go there and get thumped again, I don’t think I will be able to leave the house
