Bologna: There Is But One.

By: chris | April 6th, 2009

Roma 2 – Bologna 1

It’s all been said before. A magnificent return for a magnificent player. His genius inspires, ignites and reinvents. His vision is incomparable; touch softer than the softest of pillows; passing smoother than Juan – and that’s smooth . There is simply no greater difference maker in all of calcio. But more than that, he’s an artist. A maestro who makes the game itself a more enjoyable experience with only the faintest of touch.

The rest of the game, however, wasn’t always quite so radiant. She was far from the belle of the ball. There were even patches where it was downright Beastly. At least lately. But I guess a certain degree of suckitude was to be expected. A team which thrives on continuity and fluidity, they’ve had little to no time playing together over the course of the season while the break scattered internationals across the globe. The system, the 4-2-3-1, was not afforded the opportunity to flourish and the glimmering moments were largely provided by that one guy.

So this Bologna fixture came at the perfect time: fresh off a siesta as a warmup, of sorts, for the big match on the weekend, the one above all others. They’ll need to be better – much better – Saturday, but the bodies are returning and the feet are wet. I’d say that’s three points and then some.

Brass tackx: The first was soft, yes, but looked an awful lot like a makeup call for that clear handball just minutes earlier. Or maybe it was karma for Cicinho’s steaming header back in Emilia-Romagna, giving Bologna an undeserved point. Regardless, it was due in some way, shape or form. And the second could’ve been ripped from page one of the referee’s handbook, so that’s beyond question. But a goal or two from play would be nice. Saturday, again.

Largely the expectedly choppy performance from a team still finding its feet after that unthinkable wave of injuries. A game less about individuals and more about that team mechanism. Well, all except that one man. Or so they say.

Notes

  • Marco Motta’s performances, though not yet poor by any stretch, are going in the wrong direction. Derby could change that nicely.
  • While we sing the praises of Francesco, it should be mentioned Simone allows him to play a different type of game, affords him more liberties. There were a few Perrotta runs, though amounting in nothing, beyond the ball allowing Totti to use that vision whereas La Bestia prefers to shadow Francesco’s shadow. Different strokes, but Simone Perrotta is an immense part of this team. On form, irreplaceable.
  • When the lineup read De Rossi, Perrotta, Brighi – tears of joy, I tell you. Tears of joy.
  • But Matteo Brighi ain’t a winger
  • Panucci botched it on purpose. I’m not trying to suggest he’s subconsciously a turncoat, but he is.
  • David Pizarro in the 4-2-3-1 will end someone’s life prematurely. Mine? Maybe. Daniele De Rossi’s? Perhaps. Doni’s? He gets my vote. You’ve got to think the first time David – and it’s coming – threads a perfect through ball betwixt Juan and Mexes for an onrushing attacker Alex’s heart will up and quit.
  • You know, Menez has gotten a little bit better with the deep sea antics – he genuinely has – but he still never fails to wind up on the ground after relinquishing possession. Never. Whether he was fouled, dove or just fell down taking a shot, there’s some sort of inexplicable magnetism to the ground for the boy. I suspect he’s not of this planet, and the hair choices would agree.
  • Speaking of lockx, is Francesco growing his out or just bickering with Ilary and this a battle in the war?
  • And back to Yeremy: the ankle – the reason he was subbed at the half – isn’t wonderful but doesn’t seem a serious problem and could be ready on the weekend.
  • Read of the day: a nostalgic tribute to the Rombo. The formation which righted the ship and put Roma in place to fight on, now thrown by the scrap heap for Spalletti’s true love.

D’Alessandro won’t get any game time this year, unless we r smashing a team 3-0. Next year in the Coppa I expect to see him more, and hopefully he will develop into a star.
Juan and Vucinic still doubts for Lazio game, though might play. Im getting frustrated with menez. He showed great signs during the Bologna match but was not consistent and his overall performance was average. Im all for cashing in on him if he doesn’t improve as he has been given plenty of chances by Roma.

Just something I picked of wiki
“Jeremy Menez chose the number 24 shirt, last worn by Roma legend “SuperMarco” Marco Delvecchio. In his first press conference as a Roma player, he stated that he wanted to imitate his number 24 predecessor, in reference to the many vital goals Delvecchio scored, particularly against bitter rivals S.S. Lazio.”, he better score against Lazio then.

Three outright striker-strikers, whom i’d like to see in AS Roma (and that are realistic in gettign).

Fernando Cavenaghi – 25 yrs. Current club; Bordeaux. Career tally (River Plate, Spartak Moscow, Bordeaux). 97 gls in 200 matches. Tight strong player, with a hefty right foot. Goals are well spread in all the clubs. He was transferred to Bordeaux for app. very reasonable 11 mill USD = 8,5 mill Euro.

Edin Dzeko – 23 yrs. Current club; Wolfsburg. A GIANT TALENT, 1,92 striker, who is just about to break through to be a top-top player. He’s young, tall and fast, but he might be out of reach, as bigger clubs than ours (yes, they unfortunately exist!), has him on their wish-list too. He’d be an absolute dream to me. 40 gls in about 90 matches the past 2 seasons. Shoots well with both feet.

Ernesto Chevanton – 28 yrs. Current club; Seville. Not a regular, but super toxic, when he’s a starter. Fast and produces, with his lethal right foot. He was at Lecce, scoring an impressive 48 gls in 92 matches, moved on to Monaco (20 in 50 games), and is now on the bench in Seville behind Kanouté in the pecking order. His services could be obtained for as little as 5-6 mio Euros.

The whole menez fascination is beyond me, i’ve seen nothing but diving from him really/ bar the one game i happened to be at in verona where he struck a cracker and i saw a brief glimpse of his phenomenal pace…which he hasn’t shown since. Let’s look forward to him stepping up to the plate against the biancoceleste bastardi but i get the impression that he is a luxury we don’t need in a derby.

A quote from Macheda’s dad. Maybe a return to Italy through Roma. Rome is his home town?

Of course all Italians miss their country, but now Kiko needs to work and grow up,” he noted.

“When his contract expires in 2011, we will see whether some Italian club will want to call him back.”

Some nice suggestions Klaus, and Edin Dzeko is a real talent. A massive goal scorer for club and his national team.

Fadayn – No, not particularly. He definitely hasn’t shown much for the wolves, but, I was a fan before he came to us, and spent many a late night impressed by him at Monaco. I was delighted he signed, I have faith.

Totti hattrick, this is the game where he shuts up his critics, and defeats Lazio again. A late Marco D’Alessandro to top it off.

Lazio always give their best when playing against Roma. I see a draw or maybe even a loss for Roma.. Don’t ask me why I think that, just got that feeling :(

Totti is due for a derby goal.

but more importantly, he is due for A RUN AT THE CURVA.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE HAS DONE THAT?

Even though there really is no home team, the team listed as the home team typically gets points of some sort in the Roma v Lazio matchups. If we can get a draw and 3 wins in the next 4 games then we’re well on our way.

The fixtures away to Milan and Fiorentina will be hard, but we should also pay attention to the away match vs Cagliari.

I absolutely still have faith in Menez. I think he will be incredible for us very soon.

I would love to see Totti reveal an undershirt after scoring the winner reading, “Vi ho purgati ancora!”

    Lazyo vaffanculo!

Give Menez a proper pre-season and he WILL be unstoppable. He’s not falling as much now as he did a month ago.

I think Menez is supremely talented. Just look at that dizzying dribbling/shot he had in the above highlights. Who lese can do that? The kid has poor balance (as well as strength) and those need to b priorities in the offseason. If I’m his trainer, I spend the entire offseason on those semi-balls that PT’s use all the time for rehab. I’d have him stand on those things (one leg) and lift weights while maintaing balance. I’d have him literally do weight training on those balls 1-2 hrs per day.

U should worry bout your own club juventini, 3 goals from a bottom side in your own ground? that’s worrying. You guys really disappoint me to be the title contender this year, at least we gave inter a harder run last season.

Lazio. Lazio. I have so much I want to say and can’t even focus on one enough to write it. We are going to absolutely kill them. There are a lot of guys back, they have 1 thing to play for, and the team we hate most is in the way. It will be a beating, 4-0. Be sure to come read this again after the game ;-)

And as for Abruzzo, its very sad and where I’m from, but good to see so much support from the public near l’aquila and a special round of applause to Catania for donating all their ticket sales to the rescue and restoration fund.

Off on a tangent here but what did we all think of Porto’s performance last night in relation to our last couple of trips to Old Trafford?
