Announcements, Refusals & Insanity Galore
By: Chris | June 25th, 2007
The Great Hair Debate has kicked off. This isn’t like a presidential election where your vote really doesn’t matter, so everybody get on board and vote.
Todays matchups are:
1 Philippe Mexes v 16 Rodrigo Palacio
8 David James v 9 Luca Toni
A Signing, Holy Jesus, A Signing! Wait, Maybe Not….
Cagliari’s president has stated Roma have finally kinda sorta signed what seems like their perennial target, Mauro Esposito. However, Roma has officially issued a statement of refusal on their website, which is the same thing they did with Juan. It seems to me that they might be negotiating with someone else (Faubert, Cicinho?) and they don’t want a signing to adversely affect negotiations. I’m pretty sure at the time they refused anything regarding Juan because they still held out hope for a Chivu extension and they wanted him to feel all warm and fluffy inside.
As for the deal, it is being reported as loans of Gianluca Curci, Daniele Galloppa for this year’s co-ownership (they’re saying “release” but this is essentially what I read out of it), and then roughly €5m next year to buy him outright. If this is true, pigs just flew over a frozen hell. That’s just awesome business, which makes me not believe it. The guy has huge ability; he’s speedy, has a bull-like mentality when cutting in from the wings and has an awesome eye for goal for a winger (16 in 04-05). The injuries have hurt him lately but it’s not too much to ask for him to score 8-10 in Spalletti’s sytem. If this is the deal, I really hope it gets done. Roma has nothing to lose here. But of course, I doubt this is the case.
Chivugate:
Barcelona have been under the impression that they could get a deal done within the next couple days. Think again. As expected, Real Madrid jumped into the fracas and have made this a three-way scrum for the Christian Chivu. Inter also continued their practice of dirty business and contacted Christian to negotiate contract behind Roma’s back. I’m not going to go over the top here, but I will lose all respect for Christian if he forces a move to Inter over Spain. Going to one of Roma’s biggest rivals who you know are low-balling the club for your transfer fee just spits in the face of the club and city. Let’s hope this isn’t what is really going on.
As for Real, it’s unclear what their motivations are. They wanted Chivu when he was at Ajax so it’s not hard to believe they’d want him now, especially considering the departure of Roberto Carlos and the likely departure of Fabio Cannavaro. They may be just trying to drive up the price for Barcelona, but my guess is they’ll do whatever they can to keep Christian away from Barca, especially after Barca poached Thierry Henry. We all know the one guy Roma wants in return from Real is Cicinho, and my guess is this is the only reason he hasn’t been sold yet. He’s the ultimate negotiating chip. I’ve thought all along the deal Christian would be sold for was Cicinho plus cash, I see no reason to change that thought now.
Minor Nuggets:
I) Bordeaux wants €15m for Julien Faubert now. We hardly knew ye, Julien.
Is it me or have the lot of Ligue 1 lost their collective minds this summer? Bodmer for €6.25m, Keita for €18m, Ribery for €25m, Malouda being pegged at €25m, now Faubert. I blame Jean-Michel Aulas. But who doesn’t.
II) Roma has reportedly refused all overtures from the rest of Serie A for Matteo Brighi. Really? I, for one, am all for this guy being given a chance - he’s been on the payroll long enough. But I don’t expect this is the reason for Roma refusing to sell him, I’m suspecting he’s part of a deal with Reggina.
III) Speaking of whom, Giandomenico Mesto is almost Roma bound. I don’t want to jinx anything, but this would just be an awesome awesome move. After the sale of Chivu more will happen. Fingers crossed….
I’m very curious as to what a pricetag would be.
IV) I’ve been continually looking for information regarding Ciprian Marica, because he’s in the class of guys that Roma has been after for so long that it’s hard to believe they won’t wind up in Rome, i.e. Cicinho. I found some news from Saturday which was regarding Marica, Roma and €4m. I have no clue what it says because it’s in Romanian, but a crappy online translator said something regarding late interest of some sort from Roma. Anybody know Romanian? Because it would be greatly appreciated.
(A lot of people are writing this transaction off, but I would not doubt at all if Roma used a big chunk of Chivu’s money for him. They’ve wanted him too badly for too long.)
* - Finally, can we all get on the same page here. Can everyone just get a sense of humor here? Do you really think I hate any of the people I write about? Do you think I wish injury upon Roma players? I love the club and a lot of the stuff I write is for entertainment purposes. Some is just to stir up debate and cause a reaction. I’ve had people threatening bodily-harm and whatnot. If you feel that strongly I’ll give you my address and I’ll pick you up at the airport. So everybody just lighten up (this is only for a select few, the majority of you are awesome). That includes someone here at the offside. Deep breaths and relax.
This totally went from exciting news to awkward silence. Like when you make a Hitler joke on a first date (don’t do it, trust me). Group hug. Enjoy the great hair debate.

so it looks like we got esposito, is roma making great signings this year or is it my imagination. lets get cicinio and cash from real and invest in a couple of more players, a striker and another defender and things will be looking quite bright next year!!
i am really pumped up about it, forza roma!!!!

im romanian, but unfortunatelly i cannot find any text in romanian saying anything about Roma and Marica. I can tell that couple of months ago, Chivu said he told Prade about Marica, as he was asked about the winger. But he also said there are low chances Marica will join Roma as his club (Shahtar Donetsk) wanted 8 mil euro

So, already voted for the hair debate and now we move on to the transfer stuff…
I think the Marica lin was crap… but lets hope its true and we still bring this summer Mesto, Esposito, Cicinho and Marica… that would be a very complete awesome team!!! worthy of a scudetto

I’m not very familiar with Mesto. How would Spalletti use him? Is he versatile? I went to look him up on Wikipedia, and it was saying that he’s a def. mid. If so, Roma are stacked with holding midfielders…

Did someone say Bobo bender?
I’ll agree with Corey here and say that deal for Essien really made Aulas over-value a lot of his players. But I can never resist a chance to take shots at Aulas.
Razvan, the website I saw it on was http://www.sport365.ro so I’ll try to find it again. I saw that €8m too, and I doubt Roma would be interested in spending that much. I’ll try to find the one referencing €4m.
Michele, Mesto’s awesome. He can play on the back line or defensive mid. He’s hugely versatile and I think Spalletti would use him all over the place, but mainly in the back four. Luciano is really stashing away guys who can play central mid though. Quite strange. Anyway, I’ll try to find some videos or such. I know Liverpool wanted him and Milan were very close to signing him in January.

Chris,
Keep up the style of writing that you use. It’s one thing to find a great site on Roma that in English, nevermind one thats written in a style thats humorous and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Also it’s good to see that there is a fellow Bostonian Romanista living in Ireland. Lastly Roma seems to be doing some good business so far. I’m already getting excited about next season.Posted from

What do you think about this news? Chivu is really starting to piss me off.. Moratti too.. I hope Roma get the FIGC involved about Moratti’s calls to Chivu.. I think they improved his contract from 4 million to 4.5 million euros in order to convince him to reject Barcelona’s offer..

I’d have to agree, Chivu is really burning his bridges here. I also think channel 4 is crap and I haven’t seen it from any Italian sources so I’ll reserve judgment until then. I don’t think Prade and Rosella would allow him to make that decision.
Thanks Jeff, appreciate the positive backing.

Would be sick if Roma some how got Johan Elmander , hes a good forward that Roma really need right now and if I were to get one more player I would choose either Faubert or Cicinho. Lets face it Quag is staying on udine or if he were to leave he would choose juve.

I’d agree regarding Quags but check out tomorrow’s il Romanista. He wants out of Udine and Juve just resigned Trez, that eliminates them (Alex, iaquinta, Trez, Palladino). ManU seem to have fallen back, that leaves Roma unless someone else comes out of the blue. I don’t see it happening but I’ve seen stranger.
Elmander is €12m, that eliminates him right away.

On the subject of unpleasant comments: you too, huh? IMHO your posts are very entertaining and informative, so keep it up and just ignore the idiots who use personal attacks where none are called for.
Chivugate is really starting to irritate me as well. If he really wants to go to Inter I can’t imagine Barca will persist too much, since the club in general likes to do business quietly with the club and get things done fast, and this is really not that kind of deal right now. But if the reports are true then Inter’s behaviour really has been out of line.

I think one thing that has come out of Chivugate is that Christian does not have much class, honor or loyalty and, unfortunately, he belongs at Inter with the rest of them. I may not be a fan but Barca tends to act with respect and class. Inter are experts at dirty business.

atleast inter should offer 14m plus Grosso or something. We need atleast one more good defender, a good forward and a midfield or something. Then u have a team that will be ready and wont ever lose 7-1.

the more good players the better. to tell you the truth, i didnt want chivu to go to inter either but in the long run we should look at getting the best deal possible.
if he goes to inter, do you see grosso and/or samuel coming to roma;;;
no matter what the case, lets use the money from inter or barca and buy a “big name”. so far the deals done by roma have been great but i think it would really help the players psychologicaly this “big name” were to come in. quagliarella, cicinio, etc. names that would make the other guys on the team say, this team is really interested in moving to the next level.
lets get chivugate over with, lets move on.
as for quagliarealla i think the chances are starting to increase that he comes to roma as well. dont forget that spaletti talked about juan and quags about 2 weeks ago. juan has signed and im starting to believe that quags might too.

george, I’m beginning to agree with you here. Especially after that immediate refusal regarding Esposito. I’d bet the house that the same Juan denial was a way of telling Christian all they wanted to do was re-sign him. My feeling here is there is another winger deep in negotiations and Roma are afraid he’ll get scared off by an Esposito signing. I can’t say it’s Fab Quags for sure but it’s def a possibility.
The problem with Chivu going to Inter is that Roma will get shafted in that deal. They’ll get probably 3-4m less than they could from Spain. But I agree that Roma are looking for that one world-class/big name player and that the Chivu financial situation will clear things up. I’m just praying that it’s soon. I’m tired of the speculation.

How great would it be if Roma got Quagliarella,Cicinio and one more good defender to replace paunucci when he leaves. That would make me and all Roma fans happy . Mauro Esposito I hope hes on Roma but i do not want co-ownership . For me Esposito looks abit like inzaghi and im sure he will be a great player on Roma.

I’am a Romania and as far as I know Roma dont want Marica anymore because we are looking for a winger not a central forward which is now Totti

in full agreement when it comes to quagliarella and cicinio, it would be a dream come true for us roma fans.
panucci juan mexes cicinio
de rossi perrota aquilani
mancini totti quagliarellavucnic pizzaro taddei tonnetto ferrari cassetti and midfielder from rimini, (i cant remember his name) all coming off the bench, that would be awesome!!!
why doesnt roma have there official website in english too??

something stranged happened to my quotes. ill redo the whole thing
quote from the same article:
Mircea Lucescu says Marica wont play for Roma. All offers for Marica have been acknowledged. But Roma droped their interest because they wanted a left winger instead of a central forward, to play along Totti, and they dont wanted someone to play in the center. - says M.Lucescu for TVR.
As for Marica and Rat, they play for 2-3 years allready on the same team and is hard for a small team to keep its players for so long. In championships like Spain, Italy, France, Germany is a lot of pressure.

Big thanks Razvan. I guess that ends the discussion, though I wonder what that €4m was regarding.

as far as i know, the 4m offer for Marica was done after the CL group stage (winter transfer season), but Shahtar refused it and Roma got Tavano. Most likely they contacted Shahtar again at the season end: most likely Shahtar asked 8m for Marica.

I read this article multiple times, just because “Taddei” was listed as a tag. Damn you, for leading me on like this.
They’re loaning Curci? To whom? Bastards.
