Atalanta v Roma
I’ll leave the sexiness up to you fine guys and gals. And Rodrigo Taddei. (He sends kisses.)
It’s the same every year – at least since their return – with Atalanta fixtures: I could not possibly be more indifferent. Yeah, they’re sorta good, but they’re also not that good. They’re footballing purgatory. Right there, smack in the middle. Not quite good enough for Europe, not not good enough to be threatened by relegation. (Double negative keep you on your toes? It should’ve.) Neither hot nor cold. Neither good nor bad. Neither yin nor yang. Neither Simon nor Garfunkel*. They’re just kinda…there.
Which is an incredible problem. Why? Because teams like Roma are supposed to beat them. So if they do it’s not a huge deal. But if they don’t (see: Inter), that’s not that big a deal either. Because Atalanta is kinda good.
It’s just….eh.
God I hate these games. Not to mention it’s coming off an international week filled with meaningless friendless. The calcio indifference is killing me.
* – Need an explanation? One gave us You Can Call Me Al and the other has hair like a Chia Pet stuffed in a toaster. No contest.
Happy Hallmark Day.
Back to business….I’m also incredibly worried about this game for a reason which stretches back to September: karma.
If you need a refresher course, check out how Roma got both goals in that 2-0 win back at the Olimpico….
They got the bounces, ladies and gentlemen, plain and simple. Atalanta was very, very unfortunate.
What I’m hoping, however, is that karma’s assistant screwed the pooch by sending her out a week early, punishing Cagliari instead. (1:12)
So maybe, just maybe, all’s clear in Bergamo on Sunday.
Next problem: Atalanta’s home form.
Home: 8-1-3 (+10)
Away: 2-2-7 (-7)
No. Not a home team at all.
Fortunately Milan and Juventus have beat them at home, so while they’re good at home, they’re not that good. We seeing a pattern here? I think so.
Oh, and have you checked the injury list lately? Dear lord…..
The game hasn’t even begun and I’m already begging for the final whistle.
Serie A 5
Atalanta: WWLWL
Roma: WDWWW
Atalanta managed to thrash Inter at home 3-1 and then lose to Bologna their next time hosting. Figure that one out.
Roma? Well, they’re en fuego. At least when playing on a proper pitch.
Squads
Roma:
4 JUAN SILVEIRA DOS SANTOS
5 PHILIPPE MEXES
7 DAVID MARCELO CORTES PIZARRO
9 MIRKO VUCINIC
10 FRANCESCO TOTTI
13 MARCO MOTTA
14 FILIPE
15 SIMONE LORIA
16 DANIELE DE ROSSI
19 JULIO BAPTISTA
20 SIMONE PERROTTA
21 SOULEYMANE DIAMOUTENE
22 MAX TONETTO
23 VINCENZO MONTELLA
25 GUILHERME DE MORAIS GUSMAO ARTUR
27 JULIO SERGIO BERTAGNOLI
32 DONIEBER ALEXANDER MARANGON (DONI)
33 MATTEO BRIGHI
35 BERTOLACCI ANDREA
Indisponibili: Aquilani, Cicinho ,Riise, Cassetti, Panucci, Menez, Pipolo, Taddei (squalificato)
Atalanta:
Portieri
Coppola, Consigli
Difensori
Bellini, Manfredini, Pellegrino, Peluso, Capelli, Garics
Centrocampisti
Ferreira Pinto, Parravicini, Guarente, Padoin
Attaccanti
Cerci, Floccari, Defendi, Valdes, Plasmati, Doni
Injuries
Menez: Quad, out. (Shall we add another name to the Juan, Tonetto, Aquilani, Cassetti, Pizarro, etc etc etc medical mystery list? Almost?)
Aquilani: Ankle, called because if not Spalletti was getting a uniform. Love The Poobah but, well…yeah. Serie C1 in his prime doesn’t bode well for Serie A at 50.
Cassetti/Riise/Cicinho: Fullbackitis.
Panucci: Menopause.
Taddei: Stupidity.
Filipe: Call me when I care.
I’m just oozing exuberance and pep, I know.
Projected XI
Doni
Motta, Mexes, Juan, Tonetto
Perrotta, DDR, Brighi
Pizarro
Totti, Vucinic
Before we feel all sorry for ourselves as I list the bench of three, shall we go back about six months and check out pine riders last time around? I think we shall:
25 Artur (SUB)
36 Riccardo Brosco (SUB)
23 Vincenzo Montella (SUB)
14 Ribeiro Gomes Filipi (SUB)
15 Simone Loria (SUB)
89 Stefano Okaka Chuka (SUB)
34 Valerio Virga (SUB)
Dear god, man. Nice to throw Brosco a bone and all, but that’s fucking hideous. That’s…
- A backup keeper.
- A kid from the Primavera still in diapers.
- Chivu at Old Trafford every game.
- Two training cones.
- A striker who’s already been put out to stud (happy babymaking, Vincenzo).
- The worst hair known to man.
Can’t say I’d be totally comfortable with that as my bench in an U-6 girls game.
And, upon further look, Valerio Virga actually made it onto the pitch? I guess my mind had blocked the traumatic event that was the first third of the season. Roma, she’s a cruel lass.
So outside of running out Cisco Roma’s undesirables, it can’t get much worse.
Bench: Artur, Loria, Diamoutene, .5Aquilani, Julio Baptista, Montella, [Insert Primavera name here]
Predictions
As long as they can keep Floccari in check – scoreless in four – and cease from committing stupid fouls within 30 yards (Doni v Doni territory), this game goes well for Roma. They’ve proven to be too strong.
Game: 2-0
Goals: Totti (39), Brighi (70)
MOTM: Brighi
When: 1500 CET, 0900 EST.
Where: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, Bergamo.
Forecast: 8°C and sunny.
Streaming: Still with the MyP2P stuff.
Because of pending legal proceedings, Myp2p has removed all links in the following competions: Elitserien – SM-Liga – NHL – Swedish Allsvenskan – Italian Serie A – English Premier League – Dutch Eredivisie. Once a judgment has been given, we will notify you of the outcome.
Bet365 works if you live in Europe – and anywhere but the US, I believe (it does, however, require a free account). Roja Directa has some backup options. But the best option will presumably be the one most of us use every week: Atdhe.net.

Taddei, like Perrotta, IMO is a great second choice, but a bad first choice.

was that the second leg? I was in the airport on my way to Rome during that, hoping fervently that we would make the final since I had planned my trip around that.

inter win on one goal which was a handball. same sh*t different season.

So turns out that obvious hand ball that the ref didn’t call made the difference after all….
final score…
Milan 1, Inter 1, Ref’s 1….the Rosetti the linesman with the view of Adriano’s goal should be awarded the three points for this match…
Credit to Julio Ceasar though, beastly in the last ten minutes…
I hate Inter Milan!!!!!!!!1
Forza Roma.

Simone, while not having the best finishing boots, does a lot of unappreciated stuff. I guess the same could be said for Taddei, but less than before. Simone runs like a madman and makes a lot of plays happen. Taddei is becoming less useful than he was. Like I said, though, useful guy to have, just not sure he should start.

No it was the first leg I’m pretty sure. The second leg was in Sicily and it was a draw I think.

Vs Milan, Inter can maybe say that Milan also got their share of ref favors. But claims about evening-out are BS- what about teams like Parma which lost at least 3 points and got relegated? cant believe people keep claiming the it-all-evens-out pile of shite. whether it be in favor of teams I support or not.

adriano’s hand was accidental, goal stands. great game. beckham was a disaster and shouldn’t have started. Rosetti was good, let the game flow, didn’t send ambrosini off when he had two chances to do it. pato was excellent, Dinho was magical at times. have to credit ibrahimovic some brilliant football and an assist. game had everything.

we may be able to use Perrotta’s attributes if we get a true attacking mid. Brighi, Perrotta, and De Rossi can do all the defending necessary. We don’t have that player though. Unless we can make Menez that guy. His passing would have to get more incisive. He can already create the space with dribbling.

Wow Milan posession 65%?

I bash on Simone’s lack of efficiency in front of goal often- but he can be a starting XI player for certain games and tactics. But again, not starter for all games.

I’m excited about Menez’ potential. I want him to become more sturdy than Aquilani though.

mimo — I bash simone’s finishing too, but he’s a coach’s player. He is hardworking and so many of those missed chances would not have been chances with other players. He’s one of those ‘grinta’ guys who makes the silky guys look good.

Fadayn, i am not sure how Adriano’s goal was legit. Such head-to-hand plays have repeatedly been given as PKs for defenders and have been ruled out for attacking players. I am not sure if it was inadvertent, since Adriano’s hand was in a very strange position to nudge the ball in. it changed the trajectory of the ball significantly.

First, death penalty for Rosetti (or at least throwing into seria B). Second, we all saw the “madman running” from Perrotta today. Taddei should be the starter (also he can score – Perrotta – not). Also The Beast must be untouchable starter (as a traquertista).

Hudson is a hoot. Yesterday’s Barca game comment- “Dani without Lionel is like Heckle wihout Checkle”. (whatever that means).

mimo – nah, i think he just turned his body to head it across his shoulder line like your taught. there’s also a crackin match from spain on right now – atletico and getafe just equalised 1-1. anyway that milan derby was a great example for people in britain watchin in, hope it encourages bbc to show more live games.

Peci – a trequartista must be able to pass. end of story.

anyhoo (i hate the word but want to use it, dunno why)- i guess forget about Milan’s loss. Roma have their own problems. (an understatement, after today’s shameful display)

Baptista could do what Taddei does, but whether or not Spalletti wants that to happen is different.
Posted from
United States

-

I think Spalletti uses Baptista more for attack and Taddei both for attack and defense, but Spalletti hasn’t allowed me into his mind.

Fadayn, I also don’t like Baptista’s passing, first touch, technique or agility. But he very useful at defense, can win first ball, runs a lot (a very good quality for a traquertista) and the noe guality that I like the most in Baptista – he doesn’t give up! The other contenders for that spot:
1. Perrotta – runs a lot, has some passing (one-two), speed and agility, but has the worst finishing ever and not very creative passing
2. Pizzaman – creative, good passing, but slow and awlays turns.
3. Aquliani – the closest thing to a perfect traquertista – good passing, creative, but very slow doesn’t move a lot, and awful at defence. And his biggest sin – injured all the time.
As a conclusion I think that all these players olay behind Totti and Vucinic, but I prefer Baptista. He is something like Perrotta but with a better finishing.Posted from

Also Baptista is an excellent set piece taker.

Would Diego really be more expensive than Mutu was going to be last summer? Why were we so eager to spend money on Mutu, a 30 year old, when we could land younger playmakers? We essentially did that with Menez, but he was bought as a project. Our problem when Menez is hurt is that creativity is barrish.

Baptista reminds me of an Inter player — big, physical guy without great touch. If he can bring that bit of something we’ve missed I dont’ mind that.
