A Roman For Roma
By: chris | August 25th, 2009
Pavlyuchenko
At this point in the mercato, perhaps even at any point in the mercato, in that picture above you’re looking at one of the most likely strikers headed to Rome. For ages it seemed he was reluctant to leave Tottenham – who the hell knows why – but now, with his playing time curtailed, new thoughts arise.
“No footballer likes being on the bench game after game,” Pavlyuchenko told Sport Express in Russia. “I could lose my place in the Russia squad ahead of the 2010 World Cup. I’m ready now to listen to offers from other clubs.”
One club has been linked to the aptly named Roman constantly throughout the summer and that has been, you guessed it…Metalurh Donetsk.
No, it’s been Roma.
The likelihood he’s available to Roma, with or without the sale of Julio Baptista (Yeremy’s goin’ nowhere but to his knees right now), is, well, likely. We’ll leave it at that. A loan move makes sense for all sides right now, given that Tottenham would need a good season from Pavlyuchenko, regardless of the shirt, to even begin to recoup his transfer fee.
And that’s the thing: I’ve always liked Pavlyuchenko – I have, even when Guus called him fat – and I love his game within the team mechanism, but the sum paid for him by Tottenham was a few million quid too high and the expectations for his type of player well too high. Pavlyuchenko isn’t the star – he’s the perfect Robin to a premier Batman. The swiss to the ham. The Garfunkel to Simon. The K-Ci to Jojo.
Robin is a very good all-around striker. One who does lots of things well, some things very well, but nothing spectacularly. He can have some spectacular moments, and his passing as a forward is one of his best assets, but he feeds off the team as much as himself. His aerial play is good, and it helps being fairly tall, he’ll hold up plenty well, he’ll command the odd double team and he’s a very smart footballer. He’ll find the right position, but someone needs to get him the ball. He’ll get you the ball, so long as you find the right position. He’s kind of like Mancini, but the complete opposite.
He’s got this rapport with Arshavin, which is what makes the two so deadly for Russia (that and Arshavin being the ta tas). Will he have it with Totti? There’s a decent enough chance. But I’m not sure he’s what this teams needs. I still think this team, if Spalletti continues in this direction, needs a true poacher; a man whose lone earthly desire is to bury the ball into the back of the net with such vigorous hate Satan bows in reverence of such evil. Roman is not that.
It’s funny, because I love Roman Pavlyuchenko as a player. He’s my type of player, if ever there was such a thing (I do love me some footballing intelligence), but I’m really not sure he’s Roma’s type of player – name be damned.
On the other hand, I’ll readily admit 99% of my knowledge, which isn’t exactly insufficient, comes from his time with Spartak and Russia, so his days with Tottenham aren’t my forte. If it’s the pace of the Prem which gave him fits, Serie A might be just what the doctor ordered.
Whatever the case, don’t be surprised if his agent is spotted in Rome, oh, today and things advance quickly. Call it a hunch.
Domizzi
Can he possibly be worse than Simone Loria? No. Welcome aboard.
Onto Kosice it is then.

Dhaw/Jaz Hoyte: let’s make a few things clear:
1. Of course I admit that Juve was cheating, was caught cheating and deserved to be punished for it. I’m not delusional and 90something% of Juve fans will tell you the same.(I’m sure there are some Juventini out there who are in denial of this, but that is history and history can not be erased.)
2. About me mentioning PDC, Gio, Marchisio etc. . I was just naming players who are products of our good youth system just to prove my point that Juve is still constantly churning out Italian and even Torino-born players from there, even though this mercato their targets/signings have almost all been foreign. Some of the players I mentioned are not as good as some others, but let’s not forget that none of them are older than 24 and still have a chance to improve. Roma has a good youth setup also and I wouldn’t act like some of you guys did if you mentioned Crescenzi, Frasca, shit even Marco Motta who although brought up in a diff. team is very young, very promising and will develop as a good player at Roma. Jaz Hoyte: You’re an idiot. Marchisio, who is only 23 is mediocre? Really? Marchisio right now is minimally at the same level as Aquilani who is always injured and played an average of 15 games per season for you guys. Who do you think Italy’s CenterMid is gonna comprise of very soon for years to come: Marchisio and DDR that’s who.
3. I don’t think Juve will buy both Grosso and Rafinha, just the latter. And even if Grosso would come, Molinaro, Salihamidzic and Grygera would be on the chopping block first for multiple reasons before Paolo De Ceglie. Even in the worst-case scenario if Grosso comes and PDC is sold, don’t you forget that Juve still owns 50% of a certain Mimmo Criscito who realistically would def. go back to play for a team such as Juve or opt for a transfer to Inter or Milan instead of staying @ Genoa. Do you know who Criscito is? I think you might have heard about him last weekend.

So you’re saying Marchisio is so good that he would play week in and week out at Giuve even if Melo,Diego,Sissoko,Camorawhatever and Giovinco are fit?? And if not, how do you expect somebody who cant be the Gobbi’s first choice to be Italy first choice. And dont give the logic that Gobbi’s not good enough is good enough for the Azzurri.
P.S.: I dont even like the Azzurri, I just like national teams with Roma players (Norway,Montenegro,Brazil,France)Posted from

I would prefer to satke my chances on Faty to grow as a player, and as a strong defensive midfielder who can retain possesion, stop attacks and seize the game at 1-0, unlike David Pizarro, something that should have been done when we were 2-1 up at Genoa. He is certainly capable of doing so, as we witnessed against the game against Olympiakos in Piraeus in 2007, when he marked off Rivaldo and stopped their creative play

Okay genius let me break it down for you: Juve under Ciro Ferrara is now playing with a 4-3-1-2, a.k.a 4 defenders, 3 CENTER MIDS 1 PLAYMAKER and 2 forwards.Giovinco and Diego are Playmakers. Their natural position is AMC, while Marchisio’s natural position is MC… So those 2 are completely out of the question/comparison if they were all fit.(EPIC FAIL) We are now left with Melo, Momo Sissoko, Camo, Tiago, Poulsen and Marchisio: so 6 players fighting for 3 spots. Last season, while only being 23 Marchisio, played 32 matches, more than Poulsen and Tiago. This season he has already been a starter as long as he has been fit. Poulsen will definitely not be a starter above Marchisio as he was clearly transfer listed by Juve this summer, since Ferrara saw him as unnecessary for his team. He stayed however because he made it clear that he won’t move and also because C.Zanetti was sold instead. Even though he stayed he will remain last-choice for CM as Ferrara likes the other options better. Momo is just not going to remain fit/available most of the season for Juve as he is now recovering from a medical mistake that was performed in his earlier operation/he fasts during Ramadan and his energy levels will be very low and Ferrara will not gamble much on him when he knows the previous info/Momo Sissoko is also going to play in the African Cup so he will be gone for a bit over a month. So we are left with Camo, Marchisio, Tiago and Melo. Camo is nearing 33 and he is very injury prone. Judging by last season when he was also constantly injured, there’s a very high chance that he will only feature in 20-25 matches the whole season. We are now left with Melo, Tiago and Marchisio. Melo will be an integral part of Juve’s center mid especially since a LOT of money was spent on him and Ferrara is expecting him to fill Sissoko’s role as a defensive barrier in midfield while also helping the attack every once in a while. Tiago will be featured in the mid for a good chunk of the games, because Ferrara apparently likes his drive and will to improve and he has shown signs of this since he is now playing as a left mid in a 3 man midfield like he used to play at O.L. Marchisio will definitely feature as he is Juve’s best option of a COMPLETE, box to box mid who can do his part defensively, but also occasionally give assists, shoot from distance, help dictate tempo etc.

a)This is the Roma blog, not the gobbi blog
b)I dont care if Ferrara plays 2-4-6 or 6-4-2 or Secco’s mom, I dont know, dont wanna know. I just wanted to know if Marchisio is going to play regularly at Juve or not. If not, then your claims wouldnt be justified. Apparently not
c) dont even mention Poulsen or Tiago, they were linked with Fulham
d)Your long posts suck, just say Marchisio’s gonna play in one linePosted from
France

Thank you jed for being realistic and actually knowing football. Like I said I think Italy’s CM should be Marchisio and DDR, as both are young, complete midfielders and I think they would complement each other well. Jaz Hoyte just realize that Claudio Marchisio is a very good midfielder, especially for his age already lol. It would be like me saying Motta is a shit player and Menez is trash. I say give Menez 2 years and he will be one of Roma’s key players.

LMAO, you’re really an idiot. Apparently not? That was the point of my lengthy post to clarify to a toddler-like mind’s like yours that Marchisio will play a fundamental role at Juve this year. Don’t even mention Tiago and Poulsen cause they were linked with Fulham? You think they’re scarse? Does Simone Fucking Loria ring a bell? I give up, you can’t fix stupid.

KJ, no… that piece of truth doesn’t hurt. Juve have been better than roma in most seasons past.
I asked you to “please stop” because you simply came to this blog to bash roma, not to talk about how good palermo is. Now why do this? Is your life that miserable and negative?

just looking at that photo i see massive potential conflicts with Mexes over proprietary rights to hairstyles.
otherwise Pav seems good, but can he be better than Baptista? i know most people here think he can, but i really think Baptista could be great if given the chance.
