The King Plays, Sven Speaks & Peruvian Beasts

By: chris | January 9th, 2008

20070807151026484.jpgThe King Has Re-Entered The Building

Let’s get this out of the way first: Roma played a “friendly” yesterday (I’d be shocked if it was anything more than a scrimmage). They won. No one cares. King Alberto played the full 90 and scored a peno to boot. All hail the king. Fantastic news, but no word of Sunday from what I’ve seen thus far.

* - Yes, Roma has a game this weekend. No, I can’t believe it either. The fact that I have to start thinking about a match preview is either proctologist’s fingers or blonde, leggy Swedish masseuse on the titillation scale. (The latter being welcome, the former - not so much.) Can’t decide which.

Sven Has Been Taking JMA’s Mancini Hard-On Inducing Cialis

Breaking news headline this morning, apparently. It’s gone from “was that a Mancini rumor?” to “whoa, Sven, keep your pants on - guess it was” in the matter of 48 hours or so. The interview which led to this mass-Mancini hysteria:

“I want Mancini here immediately as he is the ideal man to strengthen my squad,” Eriksson told Il Romanista. “He could become my Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Money isn’t a problem for us, but it depends on whether Roma want to sell him.

“I know that contract talks have hit a brick wall, but we will have to talk to his agent Gilmar Veloz.”

I dunno that there’s much more to say about that. It depends on that whole “money ain’t a problem” thing. Even if they don’t want to sell midseason - I’ve never been an advocate of dumping key players during the winter, but Mancini hasn’t exactly been overly productive this season - wheelbarrows of money is something they need to consider, at least from the business aspect. Depends on contract status and what they think his real contribution will be in the second half of the season. If it’s anything like the first, and he’s going to be sold over the summer anyway - you take that deal all day, every day.

Then there’s the possibility that a replacement has already been hand picked, which brings me to……………..

A Club Official Confirming A Roma Rumor? Say It Is So

Club administrative delegate, which sounds like a lot of fancy for “guy who does all the talking”, Pietro Lo Monaco, has said that:

“Last summer Roma were the first club to take an interest in Vargas,” said Lo Monaco.

“Catania and Roma have really excellent relations and this could open the door for negotiations for Vargas to become a Giallorosso.

“We want Vargas to leave in June. It is a transfer that will be good for all parties.”

First of all, fair play to Catania here. How often do you hear a club say, “Yeah, we’re too good for him. We can’t wait to see him play for a team that deserves him.”? Finally, a realist. You don’t see that often, especially with clubs hailing from Sicily. (I’m looking at you, Zampa.)

So it certainly looks like Roma has a leg up on the competition, and it’s being said via other, less reliable (at least that “administrative delegate”) avenues that iTunes would be going in the other direction, as part of a like for like swap (plus a few millions from the Roman side, just a few). And honestly, it makes sense for both teams. It’s hard to say that iTunes has proven himself capable enough for a lengthy Serie A run, but he is a talent and would probably be welcomed into the Catania side. So the Sicilians get an assload of money, a capable replacement (at least on the short term/loan), and Roma gets a superstud to maraud down the left hand flank and kick guys in the face. Every team could use a little bit of Gatusso.

Now here’s where this fits in with the Mancini shenanigans. We’ve seen that TGIP has taken a liking to throwing a fullback out on the wing in lieu of Espo, Giuly or whomever. Vargas can also play wing, thus becoming a helluva replacement for either the wing or LB, and fitting into the Spalletti system from nearly all angles. So even if it’s now, or in the summer, Vargas is giving another added option as a replacement for Mancini, if/when he eventually goes. Which is why these two quotes, from Lo Monaco and Sven Goran Fucktard, seem to be quite the coincidence…

As far as Vargas goes. We could probably at least start talking 8-10m, before factoring in iTunes. And I’d put him at a Pussycat Doll at the moment, considering Catania just seems to be in love with the idea of JMV going to Rome. (This is before all the bigger checkbooks start showing up, looking for some Peruvian action. But it seems tailor-made for a Roman deal.)

(And yeah, he could perhaps play in another formation. Just sayin’.)

And Catania’s president is agreeing that Vargas could come to Rome. Hmmmmm.

* - Keepers & rumor bonanza later tonight. Tough week.

    “Fuck you, pay me.” –Goodfellas.
This is what Roma should say to City. If the blue moon boys want Mancini this bad, make them break the piggy bank to get him. We could use the money to buy a defender and put the leftover together with existing funds to snap-up a forward who can consistently finish. We can move Cicinho up to play the wing in place of Mancini — he’s got good pace and his crossing is excellent. Think of how he played against Milan this year.

I feel so dirty giving up on Mancini, I don’t want to see him go… however, if he’s decided to leave, I would rather make sure we sell him as early as possible in January so that we have time to re-invest, none of this “dead-line day” shit. Knowing Roma’s luck, Mancini would be gone but we get screwed on the deal we were counting on and then all we’ve got is money. (I mean, money is awesome, but we need depth more.)

Could someone take the time to describe this Vargas guy to me a little? All I know is that he’s a 24 year old promising Peruvian defender. Does he play CB or LB? Or can he do both, like Chivu?

If Mancini goes, we either get a proper replacement or change formation if we still want to hope for something this year. Cicinho, like all the rest of the candidates (Taddei, Espo, Giuly and eventually Rosi, Cerci), plays on the right, not the left. Vucinic isn’t up to it, Tonetto isn’t either and furthermore he’d leave a hole in the LB position. (Which I suppose would be where Vargas comes in).

Maybe we could have Aquilani play trequartista and shift Perrotta on the left? He’d ensure a little more defensive play than Mancini, and Aquilani could make up for the absence of Mancio’s finishing skills. Fuck it, it’s incredible how difficult a good LEFT winger is to find.

    We need MUTU!!!

John, he’s basically Max Tonetto, with a more physical and aggressive manner. Can swap between wing and the back - more suited to LB though if I recall correctly he is/was fairly versatile back in South America. Has a great, strong foot, puts in good crosses and has a bag of tricks and individual skills set you don’t usually see out of a defender. Seems to be very fast, tends to stay laterally but he’ll float into the box occasionally, and he smells a free ball like a shark smells blood. I can speak more for his attacking abilities rather than defensive prowess, but from what I’ve seen, and I’ve said this many times, he reminds of a more skilled Rino Gattuso who plays on the wings. Honestly, he sounds like a fantastic buy. I’m looking forward to the Catania game just to check him out.

Ok so lets say we sell Mancini to Manciti and the choice is to get 22-24m euros or 13-16m Euros + Bianchi. Which is the better deal for Roma? I can’t speak to Bianchi’s value because I really don’t know, but lets assume Roma and ManC generally agree on his value. Which is better for Roma?

I think it depends. If we stick to the 4-2-3-1, we will abselutely need another quality LW. I don’t think that guy is Vargas. I think Vargas could be a great LB in a 4-2-3-1, a LWB in a 3-5-2 or a LW in a 4-4-2, but I don’t about him as a LAW in a 4-2-3-1. Anybody who knows Vargas better than me have input into this? That being said, I think we should go after him no matter what because we need another guy in that position and he seems as good as they get on the market, but that doesn’t solve the Mancini replacement prob.

I think one factor in the Bianchi or no Bianchi decision is Spalletti’s willingness to change formation. The other factor may be the availablity of Spalletti’s 2 objects of lust, Mutu and DiNatale. If we can get Mutu in January for a relatively fair price (even if we overspend a little), I would say just take the cash and forget Bianchi. If there is no way of getting Mutu in January, I would vote for getting Bianchi (and Vargas) and switching to a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 (if we can get Lucio too).

    Thoughts?

Vargas is an animal. In my opinion, hes the best LB in Italy at the moment. When he starts marauding up that left flank, watch out. Guy can defend really well too. He’s like a left footed Dani Alves, with more defensive skills/mental illnesses. He’s worth the 10m easy.

    Sven’s Mancini denial

Manchester City Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has denied quotes in the Italian press that he wants to sign Roma winger Amantino Mancini. The former Lazio and Sampdoria boss was reported as saying: “I want Mancini here immediately as he is the ideal man to strengthen my squad,” according to Il Romanista. However, the Swede completely refutes any contact with the Italian paper. “I don’t know where that has come from, it must have come from Roma. I have never spoken about that player with anyone,” he insisted.

Here’s why selling Mancini NOW would be a disaster. The most obvious reason, as Maro said yesterday, is why should we now, halfway through a promising season, get rid of one of our best players, one of our starters, and one of our most creative players, in exhange for what would be a third-choice striker in Bianchi and a wheel-barrow full of money…? Regardless of whether this deal from Citeh is on or off, or what Sven Burns says, this ‘offer’ from Citeh is certainly not as clear-cut ‘must accept’ as some were amazingly saying yesterday. They are supposedly willing to part with €24m – or €16m and Bianchi, if you like – for Mancini, which is good value, no doubt, but what good would that money be to us now? Would we, with our recent prolonged-bargain-player-hunting-history, have a suitable replacement sewn up by the end of the month? Not likely.

Then, what is the rush with selling him now? His contract is not up until 2009, leaving us plenty of time to sell him at the end of the season. He may not be having his best season with us this year, but he is still an integral part of the squad and a key player in our drive for success. And despite what Lorenzo and Urban Legend were saying yesterday, I don’t consider a seven point lead by Inter impossible to catch, especially as we are only half-way through the season meaning they still have to play all the big guns again. Including us. And we have as a good as chance as any at an outside shot of the CL – maybe we’re not among the favourites – but we still have a decent shot.

Lyon made a €20m+ bid for him a few months back. Man City have money to burn and its not like they’re going to run dry, even if they buy someone else now. Then there’s lots more Premiershit clubs who like to overspend – Liverscum, Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs – as well as the likes of Inter and Real and Lyon, again. What is going to change between now and the end of the season? Is Mancini going to have such a decline in his ability that his value will drop that much? Are clubs not going to want to purchase a top-class versatile wing-forward Brazilian? There is no rush. And everyone seems to forgetting Spalletti. Should his input not matter? He has said several times he wants no changes half-way through the season (no major changes, anyway). It is now looking more likely than Mancini will be leaving Roma, like it or not (even though we haven’t actually as yet offered him any new contract extension), but there is no rush. We must wait until the season is over, and allow suitable time for Spalletti to consider his options and alternatives.

As my friend RomaShield has said, there really is no rush, but we must not forget that our formation, although miraculous, has bitten us in the ass before. I think in order to get to the very top of our game, the top of Serie A, it will need to change a bit. I think this formation might bring us to second place every single season, but it’s missing that extra punch on goal all the time.

In saying that, I never meant that the 7 points were difficult to chase. I did mention that Internazionale has time to mess up and their injury list with help us out a lot. Why I would like to see this deal happen? To force Spalletti to make some formation changes, to get the club to finally bring in a big man up front, bring in some cash, and perhaps shake the club up a bit.

We seem to be this dormant animal half asleep in our cave. We come out once in a while to maul our prey, but then we go back to shelter and take a snooze. I want us to be HUNGRY every match and be banging on the opposing goal like we were last season in most matches.
