The Outlook.

It can finally begin. After a tumultuous summer with the ownership negotiations, death of Il Presidente, and the strange “opening” to the season, the actual festivities can begin and it’s now all about the football.

Last year was, without question, a successful progression. Though the trophy haul stayed constant, it was clear the team had become a more cohesive, better equipped group, one ready to challenge and challenge seriously for some heavy hardware. What can we expect this year? More of the same. Though Francesco Totti is a bit older and a banged up, the stars around him are young and improving: Daniele De Rossi (25), Alberto Aquilani (24), Philippe Mexes (26) and Mirko Vucinic (24) form a solid nucleus for now and for the future. Add the rest and it’s cause not only for optimism, but expectations.

And of course, some pretty football, as is The Giallorossi Way.

La Rosa.

The Coach.

Last year’s description brought about two revelations:

i. Spalletti has been marked for greatness in that everyone knows what’s coming and yet stopping it is nothing short of a herculean task.
ii. I desperately need an editor.

Luciano Spalletti, known as The Grand Imperial Poobah around these parts, is one of Serie A’s premier coaches, and worthy of all the praise he’s acquired throughout his few seasons in Rome. In short, he’s a tactical wizard. The reason La Magica is seen as one of Europe’s premier teams is because of TGIP and his unique attacking style. An offensive based system that operates largely without a true out and out striker but relies on dual contributions throughout the entire squad, including the much ballyhooed – at least around here – Roman Clusterfuck that sets up shop in the opponent’s box with regularity. Aside from his tactics, Spalletti favors the team concept, and wants no part of any players who threaten cohesive unity in his squad. After the debacle that was Antonio Cassano, TGIP has worked hard to create, at the very minimum, a civil feel within the locker room, and halt any public rifts within the confines of the Olimpico. As an added bonus to his own abilities, it is no secret that one of the biggest draws to playing for Roma is not a paycheck, it’s the potential to receive the vaunted Spalletti ass slap on a regular basis. One of these days, there will be a line forming outside Rosella’s office compiled of all the greatest player’s in world football willing to sacrifice all financial demands for the once in a lifetime chance to get a firm palm on the ass cheek from one Luciano Spalletti – mark my words. Kidding aside, he’s on the short list for one of the best coaches in Europe. Period.

Another year, another period growth – and not just for him, but for the entire squad as a whole. It wasn’t built in a day, but it’s begun to look gorgeous.

The Transfers.

Incoming.

Outgoing.

The Formation.

08.24.07:

In nearly every game the season, TGIP will employ a 4-2-3-1 system calling for a standard back line, two holding/defensive midfielders, a midfield line composed of two wingers and one trequartista and a sole striker up top. To the Roma novice, it sounds like a very complicated and layered system, but it’s somewhat misleading. Yes, it is fairly complicated, but it can be simplified quite easily: run your fucking ass off. Basically, run back to fulfill the necessary defensive duties, run towards and join the aforementioned Roman Clusterfuck, rinse, wash, repeat. That simple. Obviously there are set positions, but the fullbacks and even center backs are offensive oriented, the two “defensive” midfielders are two of Roma’s most talented offensive players, and the third option has little defensive skill to speak of. Then there’s the second striker, or trequartista, who spends half his days defending his own half. Two wingers will probably score 8-10 goals apiece and are one of the primary “through lanes” of the offense and both have the defensive abilities of a wingback; and then the striker, who duties including playmaking from the midifeld. So yeah, in short, run your ass off, defend, then join the Roman Clusterfuck on top. It should be a beaut.

Still holds true, only substituting a more incisive, less pouty wingforward into that starting XI.

The Holy Romans.

As much as this is a team, three are different because of their bond with the city and the tifosi. Every day they see Bruno Conti they know just a little bit better than everyone else what this year means.

Francesco Totti: Normally this space would be reserved for gushing and celestial visions of fairytales to be, but this year it’s only about keeping Jesus healthy – for now and for the long term. His presence is welcome, it is a boon without equal, one which takes the squad to another level unachievable with anyone else, but this team is no longer dependent on him week-in, week-out – a credit to Spalletti and the young stars budding around him. So while a guaranteed 3 points against Catania with a brace, countless backheels and unthinkable flicks are nice, when the time comes for a Roman assault against Chelsea, he needs to be in that lineup. As ever he is still, and always will be, Roma; but he is no longer Roma because he needs to be, he is Roma because of what he can make her.

Daniele De Rossi: At some point in every great athlete’s career it becomes evident he has simply arrived. Daniele De Rossi has arrived. Just now. Last year he was a marvel, but to do what he’s done in these two weeks while dealing with two passings is nothing short of astounding. Talent is one matter – and lord knows he has it in abundance – but he’s becoming the complete athlete, so much more than a complete midfielder. A physical force, a mental rock and its greatest source of blinding fury and passion. He is, without doubt, a legend. Now we just enjoy the ride that is the evolution of Daniele De Rossi.

Alberto Aquilani: And everything that is true for Daniele right now is exactly what he hope for from Alberto this year, because he’s still got a bit to go.

It’s almost as though this is a movie script, waiting for these three gems to be brought together finally. After which the skies will open up, a luminous beam will shoot up from the bowels of the earth and a mysterious force will form a three-headed superpower unheard of in history. At least that’s how I see it whenever I hear the words “Holy Roman Trinity”.

The Players.

Goalkeepers

Doni: Alex is like a set of speakers that only work about half the time, but when they do they’re absolutely magnificent. You’ll bring over a nice young lass, turn up the volume and your loft turns into front row at La Fenice. And then they start crackling, get speaker Tourette’s and James Earl Jones – he’s everywhere – suddenly begins calling your date a dirty whore. That’s Doni. Brilliant one moment, shithead the next. Expect more of the same.

Artur: I’m guessing he’s a poor man’s Doni. Pray for us all.

Julio Sergio: Normally he’d be designated to prospective transfer target apartment hunting duties, but he may actually have to play this season. I like Julio, don’t get me wrong, he’s done about as much for the mercato as Prade (and that’s no slight on Prade), but I’d prefer he spends the season in the stands chatting up Brazilians at Real Madrid who are currently unhappy and would love to join the samba line in Rome (Marcelo in 09-10).

Pietro Pipolo: He’s my early Christmas present. Token Italian goalkeeper on the roster.

Defenders

Cicinho (RB): Aside from carrying Mancini’s flame as the moody Brazilian, I love what he brings to the table. He’s lightning up that wing, attacks with purpose and can dribble through a minefield for fullback. Just wish he’d be a bit more selective with his crosses. After all, the best headerer on the team – at least by last year’s standards – is a guy he’s usually replacing in the lineup. And lord knows Simone’s rebound conversion percentage is down around Moratti’s IQ.

Marco Cassetti (RB/RW): Can I step up front and drive the Cassetti bandwagon for a minute here? I love him. For a team of 23, Cassetti-types are imperative: professional, consistent, versatile, high workrate and , well, good. No, he’s not a superstar and probably isn’t first choice against the best attackers the world has to offer, but he brings a lot more to the table than he’s given credit for. He’s the type of guy who helps create the best team, not the best XI.

(I’m pretending Cyprus never happened, yes. And I can also really like two rightbacks, before you ask.)

Christian Panucci (RB/CB): Oh GOMR….I’ll be happy if he does two things:

i. Plays solid football across the board, at whatever position.
ii. Throws down with someone not wearing giallorosso.

That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Philippe Mexes (CB): Hard to believe he’ll only be entering his prime within the next couple of years, isn’t it? Only 26 and he’s perhaps the best defender in Serie A.

The key for Philou isn’t individual, it has to do with his partner in crime, Tubbs. They quite simply need to further gel and become a wrecking ball tag team rather than two quality central defenders on the team sheet. And it’s not that there was anything wrong with last year, they had their growing pains as was expected but never any catastrophic stretches, it’s just a part of the process.

Juan (CB): And yet for Juan it is somewhat more individually based, because last year was surely a disappointment for him in terms of injuries. Already starting with an advantage because he didn’t have the Copa America to worry about, thus afforded a well-deserved summer of rest. If he can stay healthy and the Crockett & Tubbs duo can formulate a better partnership, there’s no question in my mind who the best defensive partnership in Serie A will be.

Simone Loria (CB): See Christian Panucci. But you can remove the italics from “not” in number two. No need for emphasis there, would just like to see him throw down with someone – and preferably while up 14-0 or something.

Max Tonetto (LB/LW): As much as JAR might take away from his playing time, do you think there was anyone in the world happier than Max when the officials on that transfer were announced? Doubtful. I’m sure his quads began to spasm in a futile attempt at clapping. It was pretty evident late on in the year the miles on his legs were adding up after spending the entire season without a trusted backup, and at his age it really affected his performance. Hope to see some typically solid play with some well deserved breaks in between.

John Arne Riise (LB/LW): As long as he can defend his position and send in the odd cross, anything else will be a bonus. Although I’ll be incredibly pissed if he doesn’t score one from 50 yards taking off limbs as it heads towards net. Entertainment value matters too.

Midfielders

David Pizarro (DM): Pizarro is like Doni, speakers that unexpectedly crap out half the time. Or they’ll meander over to the receiver and start beating the shit out of it. Or inexplicably change the channel from opera to Shakira while you sit on the couch with your date in bewilderment, unable to do anything but mouth “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING”. I hope he plays as well as he can, which is very good. I also hope he doesn’t play as poorly as he can, which is very poor.

Basically, I just hope he doesn’t drive the lot of us to institutions. Not holding my breath.

Matteo Brighi (CM): There’s got to be some sort of profession analogous to what Matteo does for Roma. End of the game he comes in to shield the back, bringing serious workrate and grit to the equation when it’s needed most against adrenaile-charged opposition. We could say he’s a closer, as in baseball, but Totti’s the high profile superstar who gets the glory with a late goal when he’s en fuego, so that’s out.

Do strip clubs have someone who picks up all the dollar bills the dancer couldn’t grab?

Attackers

Mirko Vucinic (LW/ST): Maradona of the Balkans. The Next Zlatan. Vucigol. Big Game Mirko.

The names say enough. The next superstar.

Jeremy Menez (LW/RW/Treq): Still cannot believe he’s only 21, which means the production is not likely to match the hype. Not being in a new league, new country, fresh off a summer of injury and in a unique tactical system. But that’s also not to say he won’t have our jaws resting firmly on the floor at times and perhaps occasionally wondering if you can make love to someone’s technical skills – don’t answer that. On the assembly line, just unsure when the finished product will be ready to be laid under the tree with a bow on it.

Julio Baptista (Everywhere?): Julio’s played 3+ halves in giallorosso thus far and I think he’s played at least 3 different positions. While the emergency ward is still packed he’ll play wherever he has to, but hopefully by November Spalletti will have a solid idea of where he best fits into this system with what players. And then we can all watch him bulldoze his way from half to goal with no abandon for women or children.

And no one loves Simone Perrotta more than I, but can you imagine if La Bestia nets even one out of every three chances Simone missed? Madness. Of course, that means Julio must get into the positions Simone is able to get himself into – another matter entirely.

Simone Perrotta (CM/Treq): As much guff as he gets…still integral, still a high quality player who means more to the tactics of the side than he does the team sheet. Will always frustrate when it comes to his finishing booties, but also gets to twice as many chances as nearly anyone else would in his position while adding a ridiculous amount of defensive assistance from the treqaurtista spot, if that’s what you want to call it.

Taddei (RW): I still maintain last year was bad year largely because of the injuries he simply could not shake. Constantly banged up and his form suffered for it, though he never stopped trying and always brought tenacity to the table, something my dry cleaner could learn. Hopefully the technique will come back and Taddei will once again become one of the most underrated performers in calcio – and you don’t even need to look at his performances to tell, just assess the guy behind him in the formation.

Okaka (Attacker): Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus. Everything is a bonus.

But goddamn is he a special talent.

Vincenzo Montella (ST): I’ve been searching for something to say about L’Aeroplanino since the summer of ‘07. Still can’t figure it out. There’s enough nostalgia there to suffocate oneself, but at this point we can’t be sure if that’s all. Again last year with the injuries, and being retained was more financial than technical. So I guess, once again, everything is a bonus?

Though the year would be complete with three in the derby. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

The Predictions.

It’s not worth making season long predictions last year. Can’t account for things like referees, referees or, uh, referees. Nor can we account for fixed draws in the Champions League. Can predict they’ll win the Coppa, but how’s that adventurous?

So we’ll just have to resort to last year’s predicted awards, 2008-09 edition:

Top Scorer; Or, Will Totti Stay Healthy?: Cautious optimism, Francesco. (20 goals)
Assists; Or, Ditto: Totti. (11)
Yellows: DDR (12)
Reds: Perrotta (2) Something tells me he pissed off someone important. Maybe Collina.
Best Player: As strange as this may be, this is an actual question now. Obviously someone else could be, but there are only two logical choices after only being one for so many season. If Totti’s healthy, it’s him. Again with the cautious optimism….
Most Important Player: Medical staff. Wish I was joking.

Player To Watch Out For: Jeremy Menez. If he acclimates quickly while matching consistency and tactical awareness with technique, holy shit.
Player NOT To Watch Out For: Valerio Virga. I’m setting the +/- on his games played at 3.5.
Player Expected To Improve The Most: From last year, Taddei. As a player, Aquilani – at least in terms of consistency.
Player We Pray Will Improve The Most: Gianluca Curci. For the love of buddha would this kid end my misery and fulfill the hype already. (I’m transferring all the good juju to Siena as we speak.)
Player Who Will Surprisingly Impress The Most: Can I say Valerio Virga? Is that even legal?
Most Broken Legs: Loria, of course. Let’s just hope none in training.
Most Goals Against Lazio: L’Aeroplanino. (3) What?
Most Illegal Midseason Contacts: Massimo Moratti. Come on.
Best Surprising Inclusion of a WAG Midseason: Aquilani can’t be considered surprising anymore, so…..how about Riise? I mean, he does look liked he’d snowblind dates from the moment he takes his shirt off so that has to put a hamper on the old love life. We’ll go with that one. Unless she’s blind with an albino fetish (don’t ask). Then all bets are off.
The Christian Wilhelmsson aka Focal Point of My Quasi-Logical Hatred Award: Artur. I can’t explain, but that’s really the point, isn’t it?
Most Spalletti Ass Slaps Award: Brighi. I’m actually expecting Spal to implement a warmup system this season on the bench, spending much of the games practicing on the substitutes. And think what this could mean for team morale – everyone will be thrilled to ride the pine.
Most Handbags Bought Midseason: Mild upset here – Riise.

Awards:
Daniele De Rossi - Best Midfielder in Serie A; Best Italian; Best Player.
Philippe Mexes – Best Defender in Serie A.

FORZA ROMA

THE COACH

Luciano Spalletti, known as The Grand Imperial Poobah around these parts, is one of Serie A’s premier coaches, and worthy of all the praise he’s acquired throughout his few seasons in Rome. In short, he’s a tactical wizard. The reason La Magica is seen as one of Europe’s premier joga bonito teams is because of TGIP and his unique attacking style. An offensive based system that operates largely without a true out and out striker but relies on duel contributions throughout the entire squad, including the much ballyhooed – at least around here – Roman Clusterfuck that sets up shop in the opponent’s box with regularity. Period.

Analysis/Awards:

Microsoft Stock in 1978 aka Best Purchase Award: Juan. He is, well, freakin’ sweet, and the best of the lot. I’ve said it a million times, so I’ll refrain from saying it was complete thievery, but it was quite thievish. He’ll make everyone forget about what’s-his-nuts soon enough.

Getting Out of the Way of Speeding Traffic aka Best Move Award: Getting Christian Wilhelmsson the fuck out of town. I can stop throwing shit at the TV now. Christ almighty he blows. Talented, but blows.

Federica Fontana aka Sexiest Pickup Award: Cicinho, easy. If Roma didn’t have the most exciting team in Serie A already, Cici clinched the deal. If he can stay healthy, it’s a fair price. If he can improve and start to fulfill his potential, it’s the steal of the summer.

Pulp Fiction Basement Scene aka Worst Bending Over Award: Duh. David Pizarro. €12m? Are you kidding me? €12 fucking million? Seriously?

Milk Was A Bad Choice aka Worst Move Award: Allowing Inter to come in a poach David Suazo out from under The Grand Imperial Poobah’s outstretched arms. You know, because Roma had to stay polite. At least Moratti did the classy thing, as usual, and obeyed the wishes of Cagliari. Oh…wait….

The What’s Your Name Again? Award: Chivu, because it’s going to happen a lot sooner than you think.

Julia Stiles aka Most Underrated Move Award: Ahmed Barusso. Talk to me in 2 years when Roman Abramovich is offering up Claudio Pizarro and the rights to Latvia for him, and Moratti is bitching to Rosella about how he gave her such a deal on Little David and that she owes him (classy AND logical…what a guy). Seriously, he’s a stud.

* – As far as Julia goes, she’s got an understated sexiness about her, not to mention she seems like a totally cool girl, which obviously vaults her about 12 notches of hotness immediately – if only because they’re about as rare as a 300-karat pink diamond. Plus, one of these days she’s going to put out a stellar acting performances and make everyone forget about Save The Last Dance. I hope.

THE FORMATION

CURVA TOTTI

Possible Alternates: 4-3-3; 4-2-1-2-1; 4-2-1-3; 3-2-3-2. None are likely outside of the last, but it could happen.

THE (SOMEWHAT REALISTIC) EXPECTATIONS

Last year was an important year by all accounts. Taking home a trophy is always a great thing, and finishing second while advancing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in only TGIP’s second year is a hell of an accomplishment after the turmoil of the previous few campaigns. From the biggest of pictures, the Fabio Capello mess has been cleaned up officially now. Despite similar expectations, this new campaign is entirely different for many reasons – both positive and negative. First of all, it’s the end of Calciopoli with the return of Juventus and everybody starting with a clean slate, no more point deductions. Parity has returned somewhat, and the league has more depth, it appears, that at any point in recent years. That alone makes it a difficult campaign.

Next, despite only selling one key player and the rest returning on loan, the squad has overgone a minor overhaul, especially in the back four. Two new defenders who will see a lot, if not most, of the games will require something of an adjustment/evaluation period – not to mention the injuries to begin the campaign forcing some shuffling. The depth on the wings, one of Spalletti’s key areas marked for improvement in the summer, has improved greatly. If only because Chippen is now knocking balls off defender’s shins in the Prem. But it will take some time to see how well Giuly, Espo and Mirko can perform under the spotlight. The rest of the squad should stay relatively status quo and each respectively strong.

Third, that 7 week gauntlet of calcio hell. How well will Roma perform and then rebound? Will it be either focus on Serie A or CL? Will the squad, particularly the defense, be healthy enough by then? My feeling is this: Roma needs to take a minimum of 7 points from the first 3 weeks against Palermo, Siena, and Regina. That allows at worst two wins and a draw, which is more than doable – with 9 points a very real possibility. Then that leaves the 7 weeks of hell. As we all know, one of Roma’s worst problems is dropping points against weaker opposition – then playing their collective arses off against the big boys. With the new depth this shouldn’t be as much of a problem, so it’s fair to say Roma can easily take 6 points off the two “breathers” in the middle, Parma and Napoli. In the remaining 5 games against Fiorentina, Juventus, Inter, Milan and Lazio – I think they can and should take ten points. Beating Juve, Lazyo and Fiorentina while dropping one of Milan and Inter with a draw to the other. That leaves 23 points after 10 games, with a pansy schedule the rest of the way until the winter. Inter isn’t going to have nearly the season they had last year, and it won’t require 113 points to take the league this year. And if the performance in the Super Coppa was foreshadowing in any way, then taking close to maximum points is a very real possibility in these first ten weeks. After that, Roma can work itself towards that 7 week gauntlet in the second half a bit more smoothly.

As far as the true expectations go, Roma should grab a top four Champions League spot and make a respectable run in the Coppa – probably to the semi’s, considering the ridiculous depth they have at certain positions right now. The Champions League is a little hard to predict without seeing the draw, as well as the new scoring/weighting system, but Roma should advance past the group stages. Again, depending on the draw (as last year’s draw showed us, there is a big difference in Liverpool drawing Barcelona and ManU drawing Lille, or Milan drawing Celtic), another appearance in the quarter-finals is a very realistic goal, if not expectation. TBD.

THE PREDICTIONS

Serie A: Scudetto. How could I be considered the offside’s true Roma representative if I didn’t pick Roma? But honestly, if you stand back and look at things, it’s obvious Roma has shored up a couple of their most glaring weak points and now looks to be a great squad with a tactical wizar at the helm. If Roma gets a head of steam, they will be difficult to beat – because there is little question they can beat anyone in Europe on a given day. Also, this being the third year of Spalletti is a major key, and a factor people are not giving enough weight. Forza La Magica.

Champions League: Semi-finals. I still feel like destiny is calling in 2009, when the Final will be at the Olimpico. Still, an improved performance and enough to have Roma knocking on the door as a European powerhouse.

Coppa Italia: Semi-finals. The Scudetto run will force TGIP to rest nearly everyone.

Top Scorer: Duh, Il Capitano (23 goals)
Assists: Ummm…..Totti? Yeah, Totti. (8a)
Yellows: Mexes (16)
Reds: Mexes (2) Christ this is easy….
Best Player: Francesco.

Player To Watch Out For: Mauro Esposito. If he finds that rejuvenation machine…look out Serie A and hello 4 goals a game.
Player NOT To Watch Out For: Adrian Pit (Pronounced ‘Piz’) Honorable Mention: Daniele Prade
Player Expected To Improve The Most: Mirko Vucinic. Legend in the Making.
Player We Pray Will Improve The Most: Gianluca Curci. Fun fact: The 3rd leading cause of death in Rome is cardiac arrest due to Alexander Donieber.
Player Who Will Surprisingly Impress The Most: Marco Andreolli
Most Broken Legs: Ahmed Barusso
Most Goals Against Lazio: Simone Perrotta (3)
Most Illegal Midseason Contacts: Massimo Moratti
Best Surprising Inclusion of a WAG Midseason: Matteo Brighi
The Christian Wilhelmsson aka Focal Point of My Quasi-Logical Hatred Award: Christ, the only real option is Lulu Gulu – but I’ve warmed up to him (I don’t typically hate in season). So this award is being saved for Danny Szetela if he ever decides to embarrass Roma with his presence. But be assured, if Lulu starts missing 3-4 sitters per game on average, then this award is going to be his by a unanimous vote.
Most Spalletti Ass Slaps Award: Taddei (1,743)
Most Handbags Bought Midseason: Daniele Prade

Awards:
Daniele De Rossi - Best Midfielder in Serie A
Alberto Aquilani – Best Young Player in Serie A
Francesco Totti – Best Player In Serie A

You know, you’d think I was a homer (I am), but even most non-Roma (minus any Lazio fans) supporters would argue that’s a very real possibility. Totti is clearly the best player in Serie A, despite what Ricky Kaka fans think (his damage was done mostly in the CL anyway, and he’s nowhere near as consistent as Er Pupone). De Rossi is probably the best overall midfielder, and is elite when considering both attacking and defense. Aquilani is easily one of the top 3 young talents in Serie A, all while coming off a stellar U-21 tournament. Write it off, but it’s not illogical.

And with that, I give you this:

Roma’s biggest question mark for the next few weeks, if not the season, will be the back four – or back three if Luciano Spalletti decides to switch things up a bit. There are a few new faces in defense, and one missing old boy. The biggest key will be how healthy, effective and cohesive the central unit can become throughout the course of the season. The side story is how well the fullbacks will age, be it with the grace of a ballerina or Chris Farley on skates. Nine times out of ten the back four will be just that, a back four, but occasionally Spalletti has alluded to the possible use of a three back defense, which may be used to accommodate Mirko Vucinic as a striker, not a left wing. There also may be one more face to be introduced, but there probably won’t be a definitive answer on that until 12:01a September 1st. For now, onto the usual suspects:
Philippe Mexes (CB): The new (sole) leader of the back and has finally come into his own as one of the best defenders in Europe, considered by some as the best defender in all of Serie A. Everybody knowns how talented he is, but one of his greatest strengths – and consequently weaknesses – is his passion and fiery temperament. He’s a back line demon taking men off the ball and breaking up attacks, but often times it’s a little too harshly, giving him a proclivity for picking up pretty colored messages from the refs. In this respect, he showed in the Juventus friendly he’s already in mid-season form by starting up a few spats with his BFF, Pavel Nedved. Very little worry, and he should begin taking more command of the back as he matures and improves his game – which, much to the benefit of Roma fans, is still a work in progress.

Prediction: 35 games, 2 goals, beaucoup cards, 37 different hair styles and the adoration of Romanisti everywhere. Also, personally – and I don’t know why, I think Philou is going to improve from and offensive/passing standpoint this season. Just a gut.

Juan (CB): Despite the addition of another Brazilian defender, Juan is Roma’s big buy for the summer and a complete gift from old boy Rudi up in Leverkusen. His acquisition was one of the worst kept secrets in Europe starting in the winter, and probably a large reason why a certain Romanian was put on the block early this summer. He’s smooth, he’s efficient, he’s tall and he’s damn good. Very underrated by most of Europe, but not those in Germany who were able to watch him clean house on a regular basis. Whereas Mexes is a hardnosed passion-driven defender, Juan will be a calming influence in the back while providing similar defensive abilities. It won’t be long before he has Rome forgetting the name of…..what’s his name again?

Prediction: 25-30 games, hugely efficient defensive performances all while chipping in the odd goal or two – eliciting glowing praises from the coaches of Serie A.

Matteo Ferrari (CB): Matteo was one of the surprise performers of last year, and filled in more than adequately in the absence of other defenders – mostly you know who. He’ll get similar duties this year, with more of a three-headed central defense rotation based on doling out rest equally. One of the biggest factors in his progress (at 28 still progressing) is the fact that he has spent so many years jumping from team to team with little stability and comfort in a constant situation. Having another preseason and year with the same club could work wonders His best years were at Parma; the only consecutive years at any club outside of Rome – coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Could surprise even more people this year with his improvement and call for more three back defenses than anticipated.

Prediction: 20+ games and consistently solid performances, making him nearly invaluable to Spalletti.

Marco Andreolli (CB): Potentially the defense’s biggest question mark. He hasn’t been favored much this preseason, and it looks like he’s going to need to earn the trust of Spalletti before he sees any meaningful playing time. His biggest impact lies in the future, and if all things work out as planned, he should be a superstar in Roma’s back line within a few years – provided the co-ownership works out in Roma’s favor. The obvious thought is he will see early Coppa time, or some late game substitution time against weak squads, but only time will tell what really happens. It’s doubtful he’ll make any impact this year outside of giving Roma fans starry eyed dreams for the future. His biggest job will be proving to the Roma hierarchy he truly is the second coming of Alessandro Nesta and they can’t afford to lose him in le buste next summer at any cost.

Prediction: 10 games or so and a lot of individual work on the side per Luciano. It’s a time for development, not necessarily contribution.

He’ll begin the campaign pairing up with Mexes at central defense until Juan and/or Ferrari are available to return. His performance was much improved during the Super Coppa matchup, but to say it isn’t the ideal scenario is the understatement of the century. He should be adequate, but adequate enough? No clue yet. When he is switched back over to the flank, his spot will be occupied by Cicinho, at which point they’ll probably split the majority of the time, as well as pick up cover for Max on the left if the roster stays as is and no additional reinforcements are acquired. Besides his adaption to central defense, the biggest question is how well will Father Time treat Christian this season. He’s 35 and hitting that age where footballers legs, amongst other body parts, begin to fail them. He’ll surely need more and more rest as the season progresses, but one of these days he’s bound to show his age. Can only hope it’s not soon.

Prediction: 25 or so games all across the back line, contributing as usual but needing more breathers. He probably has 2 more years of top flight action in his legs, until then he should be one of Luciano’s more valued players.

Cicinho (RB): For fear of repeating myself consistently over the course of a few days, everything needed to be said about Cicinho was said here. You know his capabilities and expectations. ‘Nuff said.

Marco Cassetti (RB): Possibly incomplete, as his fate will not be known until August 31st, but all indications are he’ll be retained. His services are underrated, as pointed out explicitly by Bruno Conti, but he is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Offensively he’s a potential star, with a great arsenal for RB and some moves that really make one question what his true position should be. Defensively he’s adequate at best, and is easily beaten by better defenders. When he’s defending, typically the most to be asked of him is to knock the ball away, rather than regain possession and act accordingly. He is capable of switching up flanks; in fact, for a RR last year he spent some quality time drifting over the left hand side of the pitch – specifically the penalty box. This year, if things stay as is, he’ll probably be asked to back up sporadically on the left and right, but should Roma reach the depths of the CL knockout phases, it’s fair to say he won’t be getting much time unless dire straits arise.

Prediction: 15+ games, some smooth passes and maybe some time experimenting elsewhere on the pitch.

Max Tonetto (LB): Easily last year’s biggest surprise and now an integral part of the starting XI. He spent most of his career as a winger, so his pace and ability to get down the flanks and put in crosses were known, but his defensive showing really opened the eyes of many a Roma fan and pundit. Also, outside of team success, probably the best story of Roma’s campaign last year was his debut with the Azzurri at the ripe young age of 31 and the subsequent tears when telling his mother (can we get a big awwwww). His solid performances have come to be expected, and his absence means a large hole in the Roma lineup. Despite the depth of fullbacks, none are really left-specific, and Max is really the only true left-sided player on la rosa, which is somewhat of a cause for concern. He will get most of the starts and all the important games. The biggest thing is to pray that he doesn’t go down with injury.

Prediction: Rival with Il Capitano for most games on the squad, 1 goal and plenty of class crosses.

Unnamed LB Backup: To be continued….

Keepers

Depth Chart

1. Doni
2. Gianluca Curci
3. Julio Sergio

Doni: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde v 2.0. On some days he can look like the best keeper in the world. On others, not so much. He performed well during the Copa America tournament this summer, improving greatly as it went on, but is still more than capable of the odd moment of mental relapse. No clue what it is with him. He may be a bit over-confident when it comes to going after balls he has no business going after, but a lot of the time it works out in Roma’s favor. There are surely some keepers in Europe much better, but there are many many more much worse.

Prediction: Starter in 99% of Serie A, Champions League and maybe the Coppa advanced stages if Roma gets that far. Not to mention plenty of cardiac arrests all throughout the city of Roma and Europe – assuredly the reason I will be dead by the time I’m 27.

Gianluca Curci: His preseason left much to be desired. Actually, it left everything to be desired. Despite that, he is still exceptionally talented and Roma’s future #1, whether Doni likes it or not. The recent call up to the senior Azzurri squad said quite a bit, and it’s clear that in the future, that spot will also be his for the taking. The problem is his development. Depending on the source, either he didn’t want to go out on loan and refused the notion, or he wanted to go out on loan and Roma was the one that refused. Either way, the consensus is he should be out on loan taking 78 shots a game in front of a non-existent defense and coming back a much better keeper. Unfortunately, the majority, if not all, of his playing time this year will come during the Coppa Italia tournament, and should Roma get bounced early, he will see very little time outside of playing “I spy with my little eye…” on the bench with Giuly and Pizarro this year. The kicker is he claims to want to fight for time as the #1, a status he held only a couple years ago but proved futile and eventually lost his job to Doni. Is he ready? It certainly doesn’t appear that way, but hey, if he is it’s a nice problem to have.

Prediction: Coppa games, a few starts against very weak squads and potential revisiting loan talk in January.

Julio Sergio: Probably the biggest service he will ever do for Roma is convincing Cicinho to join up from Madrid. He got some time early in the preseason and wasn;t terrible, at the very worst he might see a couple games, but it will take cataclysmic injuries to both Doni and Curci for Sergio to factor in at any significant level this season. Still, a good guy to have around just in case.

Prediction: Maybe a couple games, about it. But lots of time making Cicinho feel comfortable, which will be huge.

Carlo Zotti: He will either be loaned out or play no part in any games this season unless that much ballyhooed apocalypse comes. Julio Sergio getting preseason time spoke volumes and the 3rd keeper spot looks to be his. A loan at some point looks like a sure thing.

Next Installment: Overall

One of those systems where the players fit the system, not vice versa, a lot of guys on the squad can fill in adequately at a few position. Essentially divided into two different groups, the wingers and the central midfielders. The wingers doing what wingers do, but the central midfield comprised of two “defensive mids” and one trequartista; or, in Simeone Perrotta’s case, jack-of-all-trades, master of a couple. This is where those vaunted “waves of attack” come into play. Everyone is required to fulfill their respective defensive duties (some more than others), but the moment the ball turns over into Roma’s possession, it’s get your ass in gear and join The Roman Clusterfuck in the opponent’s penalty box. Thus far it has proved to be one of the effective and exciting attacks in Serie A, if not Europe. Proof of the tactical genius that is Lucanio Spalletti, aka The Grand Imperial Poobah. The usual suspects:

Central Midfield:

Daniele De Rossi (CM): The Heir. To what? Everything. At 24, already considered arguably the best midfielder in all of Serie A. Totti’s captaincy is his when Il Capitano rides off into the sunset. Francesco’s status as the best player of Roma and icon of la citta eterna will be his. It’s all his. His starting spot somewhere in the Roma XI is assured for the next 8-10 years or so. This year should see DDR grow from a maturity and decision-making standpoint, allowing him to completely dominate the midfield area singlehandedly like only few can. Essentially, he’s Roma’s answer to Steven Gerrard, and one of the most talented and valuable players in the world. DDR is a difference maker, and will dominate the midfield accordingly. It’s hard to describe him in words – he’s it. That’s all. He is it.

Prediction: 5 goals, numerous assists and the award as the Best Midfielder in Serie A for the season.

Ahmed Barusso (DM): Ahmed is still somewhat of a project, but he’s the only true ball-winning defensive mid on la rosa; and that alone will get him some playing time, especially when De Rossi is given a rest or taken off at the end of a game. However, he’s still a player whose most significant contributions lay in the future, and he’ll be treated accordingly. Don’t expect him to challenge for a starting spot anytime soon, but he will earn some playing time with his aggressive style and pure physicality. At this point a best guess is a role similar to Ricardo Faty last season. Some early Coppa time and late game substitutions to begin with.

Prediction: Early Coppa playing time, as well as against some weaker squads during Champions League and/or Azzurri weeks. 15 games or so and a lot of drooling from the tifosi when he starts unleashing those Howitzers from just inside the half. Roma’s half.

Alberto Aquilani (CM): My Boy. Everybody knows the future of Roma’s midfield is Daniele & Albert. Is it now? It does appear that way. He has the talent to be one of the premier all-around central midfielders in Europe, and should start to make the casual fans sit up in their seats a little bit this season. He has elicitied the interest of some of the top sides in Europe already – Valencia, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea to name a few – despite not having a horde of experience on his CV. Obviously the spot to be won has belonged to David Pizarro over the last 12 months, and the two will likely end up splitting the majority of the time when David returns from laying out in the trainers room all day. The key is who is called upon during the games that absolutely need the best Roma XI possible, such as a big CL game or Inter, Milan and Juventus games. Considering Alberto’s performances recently (including the U-21’s) as well as his unquestionably exceptional talent, it’s fair to say it’s his time. His spot.

Prediction: He and Pizarro will likely split the majority of the games, with AA getting a few more should he stay healthy. 3 goals, some cheeky rabonas, chicanery which makes you question whether or not his passport is actually Brazilian and – if this summer’s performances are any indication – on the short list for Best Young Player in Serie A.

David Pizarro (CM): There’s no question David is is a very good playmaker with vision and precision passes. However, he’s lacking everywhere else which could cost him minutes. For starters, his injury will keep him out likely until October, at which point he’ll have to jump directly into Roma’s 7 week gauntlet of calcio hell. It’s more lingering than serious, but sometimes those can be worse. Lingering injuries are the one’s that flare up often, so hopefully he isn’t rushed back too soon for the sake of depth. Afterwards his playing time will be determined by how well Aquilani performed throughout his absence.

Prediction: 20 games or so, but won’t be the mainstay he was last season. 1 goal, a few cheeky passes and lots of hugs for Giuly.

Matteo Brighi (CM): Incomplete. He may stay, he may not. If he does, he’ll back up and see 15 games or so. More information in September.

Prediction: He sticks around as cover for the central midfield as mainly a substitute and performs well, but not spectacular.

Simone Perrotta (CM/SS): The trequartista spot is his, and where we could probably consider Totti the heart, brain and feet of the squad, Perrotta is the spine of the formation. His presence and characteristics are integral to Spalletti’s style and tactics, specifically, his stamina, pace and pinball-like box-to-box abilities. Despite being considered the trequartista, he assists greatly on the defensive end, making his absence in the squad felt more only with De Rossi and Totti (see: Old Trafford). His finishing can leave something to be desired, but if Roma can create similar chances to the silver platters offered up to Ludovic Giuly in the Super Coppa, then Roma should be an offensive beast. Highly underrated and underappreciated.

Prediction: The boldest prediction of the season, Simone will bag 10+ goals and be one of the main difference makers in this season’s campaign. He’ll also start most games, and all games that really matter. No question.

Wingers

Mancini (LW/RW): A non-worry. He’ll be spectacular, he’ll disappear, he’ll be spectacular again. That’s the pattern. His starting spot is assured and is obviously one of the keys to Roma’s offensive and overall success. The biggest question heading into the season is the status of his extension talks and how that will affect his game. There is still no definitive word on what halted the talks prematurely even though things were going smoothly by all accounts, so it is somewhat of a mystery. All parties point to it not being much of an issue, but if not, it shouldn’t affect his on the field performance. He showed to be a true professional by keeping his rift with Totti private for as long as possible and not leaking word to the media and still performing exceptionally on the pitch – even if the two didn’t give each other big hugs and kisses during goal celebrations. Whatever happens, it shouldn’t affect his stellar on the field performances.

Prediction: 30 games, 9 goals and starting to broach elite winger status with a little more consistency.

Ludovic Giuly (LW/RW/CM/SS): When he was bought it was widely assumed it was as a winger. The absence of Simone through injury in the preseason has forced him into a more central role, even though the bulk of his playing time should still come on the flanks. Due to his speed, an ideal late game sub and change-of-pace type of guy for tired defenses. Also best suited to larger pastures based on his lack of physical stature. Will still see some starts all along the front line, and could even fill in for Totti in dire emergency.

Prediction: 20 games, 6 goals, with his biggest impact coming during the Champions League.

Mauro Esposito (RW/LW): Seems to have somewhat dropped in favor during the preseason, but he’s also coming off an injury plagued season and not in full form yet. Regardless, probably the biggest boom-bust in the squad. He could either fall flat on his face or replicate the form that had him score 16 goals from the wing 2 years ago. A great ability to cut and shoot, but his shots thus far for Roma have been off target and far from vintage Espo. He will need to prove himself early to be considered a main option from the wings.

Prediction: 20 games, 4 goals, and becoming much more impressive during the second half of the season.

Rodrigo Taddei (RW/LW/CM): Deserving of his starting spot on the right wing and will stay there for the time being, unless Esposito or Giuly both jump into the rejuvenation machine and start channeling their 2004 selves. Taddei is one of the most underappreciated players at Roma and even in Serie A, how many people forget Roma beat out Juventus and Inter for his services? Has the bag of tricks and pace but actually uses them intelligently and with purpose, which makes him Bizarro Christian Wilhelmsson. His versatility allows him to play anywhere along the midfield front line and even give some defensive assistance out wide. A solid, sometimes spectacular, player and one of the least worries in the squad.

Prediction: 30 games, 5 goals, still highly underrated.

Edgar Alvarez (RW/LW): Burritos is one of those “average at everything but one plus plus attribute” that scouts tend to run away from ASAP. That one plus plus attribute in this case being speed. He’s got it and he’s got it in spades. Roma has plenty of that now with the additions of Espo and Lulu Gulu, so Alvarez has to ascend the Himalayas if he wants to force some playing time. There is always the option of selling/loaning him in the next week, but there has been nary a word from the streets on any potential suitors and Spalletti’s desire for 97 wingers in his stable. He’ll get Coppa time and emergency duties, but not much else outside of that. Still, it’s always good to have a body around in case the apocalypse mosies on down from high.

Prediction: A few spot games early in the season and then loaned/sold to relegation fodder in January.

Adrian Pit (LW): The ex-Bellinzona superduperstud looks to be sticking around despite reports sending him on loan to Bari, as well as having reports say post-signing he would be loaned out to Serie B ASAP. Why? His experience is limited to the Swiss and Romanian 2nd divisions, which, for those out in the cold, is a far cry from Serie A and the Champions League. He may or may not be loaned out before the season commences, but he will see very little time at Roma regardless.

Prediction: Loaned out, either in August or January, after seeing very little, if any, time on the pitch.

Aleandro Rosi (Rw/LW/RB): Aleandro is somewhat of a mystery. He certainly has the skills and he’ll definitely be a quality Serie A starter someday, at the very least, but where he fits in this season is a question. His two most likely positions, RW and LW, are currently stacked, although he could probably be placed 5th on the depth chart ahead of Alvarez. His youthful exuberance and passion for Roma really comes out in his play which, combined with his skills, will have him forming a core of Romanisti at the club in the next few years. In terms of skill, he’s like a rich man’s Marco Cassetti, but still a little raw. Some offensive skill, some defensive skill and a whole lot of questions as to where he truly belongs on the pitch. He’s not a diamond like Aquilani, but he’s talented in his own right and will start to force his way higher and higher on the depth chart as time progresses and eventually towards that starting XI. Almost assuredly not this year, but it should be nice to watch him blossom over the next 18-24 months, provided he isn’t loaned out. Many pundits peg him as a guy without the elite skills, but one whose vigor and determination will turn him into a star. Let’s hope so.

Prediction: Still the ever-present possibility of a loan, but Spalletti really likes this kid – and all the scouts rave about him. A betting man would have him sticking around. More and more late game substitutions and a lot of Coppa time early on, with Spalletti keeping a watchful eye on his progression. Eventually he’s going to surprise everyone and show up as a high class player. Could be soon.
First up is the attacking line, meaning Francesco Totti & whoever else – pretty self-explanatory. As we knnow, Luciano Spalletti typically favors the one striker up top, although this year may see a few games with an Il Capitano-Vuci partnership. Here’s nothing.

Depth Chart:

1. Francesco Totti
2. Mirko Vucinic
3. Shabani Nonda (maybe)

Forwards

Francesco Totti (ST): There’s very little to say that hasn’t already been said before. A true virtuoso and the icon of Rome. Reigning European Golden Boot winner with 26 goals (as well as leading Serie A in assists with 10) after his first complete season as a full time striker, nothing short of an amazing campaign, but something which has come to be expected from Il Capitano. It will certainly be a difficult performance to recreate, but there’s also the chance he may be better than last season after a full summer of rest after the season, one more year of healing after the break and a stronger acclimation to his relatively new position. Frightening for Serie A and Europe.

Prediction: Francesco is the starter as long as he is physically able to cart himself to the Olimpico – zero question in that respect. 23 Serie A goals, 7 in Europe and a sprinkling in the Coppa, should Roma advance far enough. Vintage Totti, nothing less is expected.

Mirko Vucinic (ST/LW): Last year was not a true representation of Mirko’s skills due to injuries, getting acclimated to a unique system and learning a new position. This year will give him the opportunity to show off those vaunted talents, whether it be backing up Totti up top or filling in for Mancini on the left flank. Though striker is his natural position, his adaption to the left wing the preseason has been nothing short of remarkable, even if he has not shown a great amount of consistency (he is obviously taking this Mancini apprenticeship to heart). If he can stay healthy and continue to grow as he obviously has over the summer, Luciano Spalletti will have a true luxury on his hands. Mirko is primed for a breakout year – again – and may yet earn his status as one of the top forwards in Serie A.

Prediction: Mirko was primarily used off the bench last year, but he should be given more starts this season when Totti or Mancini need a rest. Whether or not Spalletti will feature a 2 striker option at any points this year is somewhat of a toss up right now, but only time will tell. 20-25 games, 7 goals.

Shabani Nonda (ST): Incomplete at this point. He may stay, he may be sold. If he is sold he’ll be 2b/3rd on the striker depth chart, and primarily an emergency/substitute/Coppa player. Still has skills, but after that big money move to Monaco all those years ago his career has taken a sharp downward turn and looks to have plateaued now. Could be very useful, but won’t get his desired time at Roma.

Prediction: Sold to Portsmouth

Next Installment: Midfielders
