The candidate to become Rome’s next mayor said that he wants for Roma and lazie to each have their own dedicated stadium in Rome. Even though it’s an ambitious project at best, and chances are we won’t see it happen during our lifetimes, it would be sweet to have a modern soccer-dedicated stadium, without the running track around the pitch, and to not have to disinfect the locker room after every lazie home game…

Ezio, I disagree. The Olimpico is our home forever, it’s our history. …But I do feel the Olimpico needs some restorations…

I agree with you if you are talking about the pre-1990 World Cup Olimpico, the one of the 2nd scudetto. It wouldn’t break my heart to move away from this one, built with track&field in mind rather than soccer. Did you see on that 10 min derby compilation Chris posted, how many billboards one has to jump over to reach the curva? Can you imagine how much louder the Roma fan would be if they were just a few feet from the pitch? Remember, lazie is the track&field club, WE play soccer, let’s do it in a soccer stadium…

    Lotito’s dream Rome derby
    Tuesday 18 March, 2008
Lazio President Claudio Lotito hopes that “sport will be the winner” in the Rome derby tomorrow night.

In fact, to encourage a more relaxed atmosphere the Curva Sud usually populated by Roma’s ultras will welcome the father of Gabriele Sandri and the son of Vincenzo Paparelli.

Sandri was the Lazio fan accidentally shot dead by police at a motorway service station in November, while a firework thrown by Roma fans in the derby in October 1979 killed Paparelli.

March 19 is also Father’s Day in Italy, so it is set to be an emotional moment for all in the Stadio Olimpico.

I’m torn on the Olimpico thing. It’s got so much history it’s ridiculous, and nobody wants to come to the Olimpico. However, the view can be poor if you’re deep enough into the curva because the seats don’t really perch over the field, and the stadium is, for lack of a better term, old and busted. If we’re not talking 70 thousand capacity, I don’t want to hear it though. One of my favorite things about the Olimpico is the fact it’s one of the first in line for big events because of how many people it can fit. That and the fact we can get 75,ooo Romanisti in there to howl and scream for the champions league fixtures and big serie a matchups.
