Ladies, gents, bushmen and scallywags, the day is upon us. Associazione Sportiva Roma takes on The Guys From Spain Who Win Stuff back at the home fortress. First round of the Champions League knockouts on a glorious Roman Tuesday evening. It may very well be a magical night, but hide the women and children, it’s time for i Lupi to come out and play…

The news of the day is that the Legend in the Made, Daniele De Rossi, will be suiting up much to the dismay of Real Madrid’s attacking front. I don’t think there’s much else to say other than……oh thank god.

The lineup is rumored to be:

Doni;
OMR, Juan, Mexes, Tonetto;
DDR, Pizarro;
Giuly, Perrotta, Mancini;
Totti.

Which is fine by me. At this point, if Pizarro plays like he can, fanfuckingtastic. I’d give the little man a big, lingering man hug and a hearty Spalletti ass slap. As long as Roma wins, I don’t care who plays. And I have my reservations about Giuly starting on the wing – he has a much bigger impact in the middle or as a substitute out wide, I believe. But wahtever. Ludovicious Giulius to the rescue. (By the end of the year, Ludovic is going to absolutely shatter my personal record for Most Nicknames Given During One Season. I hope he gets wind of that.)

As you may know, my liveblogging juju is determined by my pre-game coffee run, and let me just say – this beverage is all kinds of fantastic. Not to mention a smooth transaction, no dropped change, pleasant counter girl….I’m feeling good about this game. Real good.

If you aren’t pumped yet, just watch this:

And we’ll keep the liveblog running up until the game gets started with info as it comes in……

Alright, supposedly official lineup (via uefa.com):

Doni;
Panucci, Mexes, Juan, Cassetti;
De Rossi, Pizarro;
Giuly, Perrotta, Mancini;
Totti.

Pizarro’s playing, whatever. I don’t care. (Still, that’s incredibly stupid.)

Real (also via uefa):

Casillas;
Ramos, Heinze, Cannavaro, Torres;
Diarra;
Guti, Gago, Robben;
Raul, RvN.

Streaming:

www.channelsurfing.net if you’re at work

and Zee Sports at myp2p.eu appear like it will be the best option, but we shall see.

Seems about time for this……

So I’m waiting for the plugin for uefa’s stream to download…..

ROMA (4-2-3-1): Doni; Panucci, Juan, Mexes, Cassetti; De Rossi, Pizarro; Giuly, Perrotta, Mancini; Totti. A disp.: Julio Sergio, Cicinho, Aquilani, Vucinic, Taddei, Ferrari, Tonetto. All. Spalletti

REAL MADRID (4-1-3-2): Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Cannavaro, Heinze, Miguel Torres; Diarra; Guti, Gago, Robben; Raul, Van Nistelrooy. A disp.: Dudek, Salgado, Soldado, Drenthe, J.Baptista, Higuain, Balboa. All. Schuster

And we’re off…..

FORZA ROMA

Seriously, it’s impossible for me not to miss the first 5 minutes of a game. Security upgrades….yada yada yada.

Alright, and we’re up….

5′ Robben crosses into the box, Doni takes it. Canna for the throw. Wait, Hot As Balls.

Wow. Raul. 1-0.

Scuse me. 0-1.

Fuckin hell.

Cassetti with a nice shot, nothin.

7′ WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON.

Did Chivu sneak into the stadium and put on the shirt again for a day?

Jesus. Goal for RvN ruled offsides.

8′ Panucci banging crosses off legs. Nice. Giuly loses possession. Daniele De Rossi with a nice tacklee for possession.

10′ DDR with another man’s tackle on HAB. Completely indispenable.

Simone flubs a shot in the box. Whaddya know. A legless wonder could score more goals than Simone.

11′ Heinze makes a nice tackle to take a helluva chance away from Mancini. Is Cicinho ready to come on yet?

12′ Cassetti controls possession by chesting a ball oout of bounds. No, I’m not bitter.

13′ Mexes goes in for a nice challenge on Guti. Ball winds up out of bounds. Guti winds up with an erection.

Btw, uefa.com streaming = totally not worth the money. Good qualiity but still jumpy. Plus the price has gone up. I blame Platini.

15. Rvn angling for a peno. Bitchass.

20′ DDR from distance, right of the goal. Those haven’t been working out for him so well lately.

21′ Raul misses basically a sitting header for 2-0. Robben is eating this team alive. God, when’s his injury coming?

22′ Yellow for Diarra.

Wow, uefa has dropped out. They’ll be getting a very unpleasant email about a refund. (Along with a personal attack on all things Michel Platinin.)

I LOVE DAVID FUCKING PIZARRO

THE KING OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DEFLECTIONS

1-1 BABY

ah, fair’s fair, right?

God, I can breathe again. And I can tell the lady not to find a hotel for the night. (I hope.)

24′ HAb with a big time whiff. Hair’s holding him back.

25′ Shitee, that was a chance. Totti and Mancini missed the ball near the edge of the box.

Herbert Fandel looks like a Germanized, refereeing Baby Huey.

28′ Free kick fron OMR header territory…..

Too long. Btw, Mr. UEFA, who the fuck is ‘Man-chi-ni’

29′ Fernando Gago kickss a 30 yard field goal. Goal kick.

30′ Miguel Torres looks like an extra on CSI: Miami.

Robben with the volley, Mexes with the block. Waiting for Arjen’s iinjury any minute now.

Btw, this is the Dutch computer. Doubles vowels.

Real playing keepaway, can’t keep it away from DDR.

Mancini holds possession…cleared out.

35′ Old Man River is looking like a senior citizen. Maybe instead of tattoo’s he should go find Brian McNamee.

37′ Daniele De Rossi is the best defender in Italy. End of.

38′ Ludovicious slips and donates it to the foot of Robben. Ugh.

Lulu on the break, Roma get possession…..Mancini…..free kick. Mancini gets all excited, takes a premature free kick. Fandel puts up his hand and say “no sir”.

40′ Shocker of the day: Philou getting in someone’s face. But he’s such a kind, well-mannered lad…….

Shades of Juventus. David Pizarro gives the ball away far too close to the box and DDR gets a yellow for the foul.

If it weren’t for his deflections, he’d be useless.

42′ Pizarro loses the ball, fouls, Real bbreak, foul from Casettti on the other end.

Jesus.

43′ Fernando Gago looking to follow in the footsteps of Tony Meola and make it to the NFL as a kicker after his career is done. Goal kick.

Half time.

It’s about 60-40, 65-45 right now. Real doing well to set up their offense and Roma isn’t helping with their fouls. Robben is an animal and OMR really just can’t contain him.

And of course, DDR is the glue that holds this team together when it looks like all could fall apart.

Inter update:

Matterazzi off with two yellows in the 30th minute. 0-0 at half time. Liverpool really needs to take this gift. (Sure, it may be good for Italy. Guess what? I could care less. Forza Reds.)

Back on the field, and it looks like everyone’s ready to go. No subs being mentioned.

Kick off….Roma possession.

Totti hacked down free kick for Roma.

46′ Pizarro…..wow. Right into the boot of the closest defender. Who knew?

Helluva tackle by Mexes on Robben. I think Arjen should grow his hair out like Guti. The Bald Mullet, aka The Bullet.

47′ What a feckin ball by DDR, right onto the foot of Totti from 50 yards. FT can’t control it.

GIULY. What the fuck are you doing? Great buildup from Totti, Mancini and Simone. LG manages to shoot and earn Real a THROW IN.

Corner runs through the box. Roma manages to get it out. Roma really defending as a team, goal kick.

50′ Nice flick onto himself bby RvN, Doni manages to take it.

Roma needs to settle down. Too much emphasis on clearing the ball instead of maintaining possession.

That Totti guy, he’s good. Cassetti misses Simone, who has been a big nonfactor.

David Pizarro must have an incredibly high opinion of himself, because he gets himself into situations he has no business being in.

55 (or so) Commentatorr “It’s been that final ball just letting Roma down at the moment”. Yeah, no shit. Welcome to the last 2 months.

AMANTINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AMANTINO!

AMANTINO!

AMANTINO!

AMANTINO!

AMANTINO!

Deft move by Totti, perfect pass, Mancini slides past Casillas and it’s only the goal line in his way.

2-1 Roma.

Get that man a fucking contract.

60c (or so) Totti looks inspired.

Hand ball Simone.

62′ Gesu, nice shot by Ramos, just wide.

Pizaman off, King Alberto on.

Time to drive in another nail.

Still scoreless at Anfield.

65′ Yellow for Torres, taking KA down from behind. How fucking dare he…..

I think Herbert Fandel moonlights as an audio guy for porn. Dunno why.

66′ Gabriel Heinze is making his way up my shit list today. Don’t touch the Tottster.

67′ Fucking Doni……Butterhands Buttafuco and Real nearly had a second.

Max on for OMR. Marco over to the right.

I’d like to see something happen with Giuly on the right. Maybe some Cicinho.

71′ Totti fouled by Gago. Free kick from about 35m….

69′ Yellow on Simone for a whole lotta nothin’.

Sergio Ramos with a yellow, he’s out for the 2nd leg. That’s HUGE.

Juan actually looks hurt, though. Shit, here comes the cart…..

Feck, and OMR just went off. Juan’s standing up, which is a good sign.

DDR goes down. Fell on his side.

Back up. Real’s possession has really been held down since KA entered the field.

Gago puts another over the bar. NFL, here he comes.

74′ Nice defending by Cassetti. Real throw.

Real maintaining their set up in Roma’s half and Hot As Balls puts it wide.

Ferrari coming on….

Juan coming off. Looks not in the best of moods and limping a bit. Everyone pray for Juan’s ankle.

77′ Royston Drenthe and his braids getting ready as well.

Break for Roma….4 v 2….shit, that was a chance…..

Aquilani elbowed in the face by Diarra. Damn, that coulda been another yeller. But Totti’s pass a bit too strong, that could’ve been .

Drenthe on for Diarra and Baptista on for Robben.

Shit, RvN hits the post….Tonetto up the wing…doesn’t work.

80somethingth’ Roma taking some pressure, lucky to win a GK.

Baptista puts a well placed pass over the bar. This iis quite nervewracking.

Perrotta wins it well, Roma’s possession eventually ends up in a corner. Everybody’s taking their leisurely time…..goal kick RM.

Raul gives DDR a little too much ass, Roma FK.

Giuly goes up for a header, ball sails right over him….gesu.

Drenthe dives at Mexes in the box and he wants a PK. Stand up, Royston.

Real now taking the “clear at all costs” route.

Fantastic interception by Berto. Real managing to set up in Roma’s end. Real just look more alive at the moment.

Somebody caught Philou waaaaaay late from behind and there was no call. Bullshit.

3 mins of added time.

Cassetti gets a yellow for slapping Drenthe in the face. Good. Kid’s an ass.

Totti and Mancini work a nice run but it’s stopped by the Real back line.

Giuly has looked gassed for the last 10-15 minutes.

Final whistle and Real Madrid gets alll up in Herbs face….

2-1 Roma. God, that’s not a great lead but a win is a win is a win. Two weeks….

    Basta.

    Cici is going nowhere.

Next year he will be our starter... Spal trusts Cassetti because he has been playing in Italy his whole life.

    Cici, goes nowhere.

  • Gollum

I just hope Juan is fit in two weeks, he was the steal of the summer (even despite all his injuries).

  • XingHieng

Cassetti and Pizzaman should learn to keep the ball in hand, not for losing to the enemy.

  • Gianni

Look he is tough and gets stuck in, never gives up, but he's a very limited player and not very gifted. The question is that why in the world was Cicinho purchased if Spalletti rates Cassetti so highly, in a variety of positions I might add, both offensively and defensively.

The new rumour is that Cicinho could be swapped for Fabiano from Sevilla, as they will need a RB to replace Alaves (sold 100% in summer) and Hinkel got sold to Celtic already.

  • lamagica

people are syaing cassetti has to go??? the guy has probably been our most solid and consitant player all year. the guy is versatile and very underrated. the guy was recently called up to the nt too as a reward for his play.

  • DiMar

Roma Rocks, Cassano Rocks, good game overall, props to Madrid for a well put together match, but we deserved it in the end. Dont know why so many think Cassetti needs to go... He basically pulls down any ball you slam at him down the line, thought he played well....

  • Mike
  • Gianni
  • lamagica

alright, correction then. ben is a fucking polentone twat.

  • nick

i guess inters luck/refereeing decisions do not translate into europe as well

  • nick

    good win.
juan awesome clearance when doni bobbled the ball he was faster than van to poke the ball away which is quite impressive.

i believe it was aqualani that cleared the ball with his head when a diarra show seemed like it would of curled into the net easily beating doni. thank you for having a man in the game that is tall enough for that play!!

2-1 isnt much to take with us but u gotta say a win would mean we got the (slight) advantage. not to beat a dead horse but last year we won the first leg 2-1 n the second didnt go so well. as long as we got a fit team in there for the 2nd leg aqualani ddr centermid with juan n mexas holding down the middle we will be one formidable side!

forza roma. happy day. nice to see pizzaro score a goal even though he passes the ball out of bounds or to the other the team, makes it even i guess

  • Gianni

    Dhaw, define even.

Real dominated posession all match and we defended with 10 men deep.

  • Dhaw

Ben is a Attention Seeking Whore.

My advice to all ,ignore the dumb mofo , it isnt that difficult.

A big fuck u to all those who said RealMadrid played better than us. Game was even. Both teams didnt live upto the football they known for.

Real was threatening only cause of Robben. Nothing else.
Roma was holding up well cause of DeRossi. End of it.

    Others had a 50-50 game.

  • Gabriella

    Ben supports Bologna, not Inter
    if I remember correctly

  • lamagica

isnt it comical how that twat, ben, spends his entire time on the roma blog trying to bash our team (that actually won) yet his team is 'playing' (for lack of a better term) at the same time and getting raped?!?!?!

seriously, what a pathetic fuck you are, ben.

  • Gabriella

by the way ... does Spaletti use an eyeliner?
    http://asroma-addict.com/gall/...

  • thanks, Sterling.

But you, sir, shall eat no crow. The goal was a deflection and Pizaman was a nonfactor (thats me being excessively polite).

(And I do believe 438 now is the record.)

  • Gianni

God 3-1 would feel so much better now, but I'll take it.

Can they stop us from scoring there?

We can't keep them out for 90, not in the Bernabeau, which makes Old Trafford seem like a walk to Disney World.

Well, after the first 20 minutes I thought we were going to lose 0-5 so I'll shut up.

  • George

Wow, 437 comments. is that an Offside record? I knew the Roma blog was popular and I've seen a high number of comments here before, but this is crazy. Wow... keep up the good work.

  • Gabriella

well I do but I am an eternal optimist, need to see about the injuries before the return leg.

Olympiacos drew 0-0 with Chelsea at home... I hope they progress and we can meet in the quarters ;)
    see... I am deluded

  • Gianni

What cowards? They don't stab in the back you idiot.

This is a romano tradition. Stab in the arse, to shame and embarass, not to kill.

Funny, in Tim Parks luminous book about Verona, when Hellas goes to Roma he writes "I wasn't wearing colours approaching the Olimpico. Why? Because I have no desire to meet up with Roma's famous knife experts and be stabbed in the buttocks thanks very much!"

Does anyone think we have a chance to progress?

  • Gabriella

Liverpool was all over Inter even before the sending off of Materazzi. Julio Cesar was great, had to make lots of saves

anyway this is what I posted on the Inter blog before the match:
    ===============
I am just listening to the Guardian podcast ans they are talking about this match… it is a good listen. They say Moratti expects to see Inter reach Moscow and win there. The bonus is 350 Euros/players (maybe) and Rafa can tweak Inter out of CL. They also say that failure can get Mancini sacked potentially. Also 4-4-2 may be his downfall
    ================

Moratti is really keen to win the CL this year as Inter celebrates her 100th anniversary (?)

  • Jeff

Your right they are cowards first thing you've said I agree with.

  • Jeff

    LOL Kj how's it going??!!!

  • Gollum

Awesome result!! And Inter lost!!! What a great day.

  • Bonnie

Wonderfully exciting, what a fantastic day for football! I'm grinning from ear to ear right now, though some of that may be reading these comments with the random "ben" insult thrown in, I was dying laughing reading everything.

and bloody hell, DDR and Mancini, wow, just wow.

  • Julian

wow giuly should never been aloud to play a full 90 again. If we seriously want to challenge for the scudetto, we really have to upgrade from cassetti and tonetto.

  • KJ Ventimiglia

Nothing new, a stabbing in the back...cowards

  • Sterling

Thank you, Chris, for liveblogging this game. I was out at a press event and was bemoaning not being able to watch it live. Between Roma Offside and Opera Mini, I was a happy man.

My wife reminded me that the same "helmet-haired midget" that I'd cursed on Saturday equalized today. I'll be eating some crow for dinner tonight.

You, sir, are a one-man public service.

    FORZA ROMA!

  • Peter

CMP -= Yeah I was going to mention that about Mancini and Spaletti. I'm not sure if it means anything, maybe just that Spaletti wanted to give him one of his patented ass grabs and Mancini blew him off. Hopefully it's nothing that affects his signature on that contract.

  • Gabriella

    Romanews is reporting the stabbing

  • Jeff

Oh yeah where's Ben and KJ Ventiwhatsamacaalit. Not so quick to show up now are you?

  • John Silver

Oh, and man of the match is De Rossi. I think there's no question.

  • John Silver

I disagree about the Cicinho bit. No way he'd have kept Robben in place. Panucci suffered him but he did a couple of fine, useful tackles which explain why he's also used as a central mid at times.

Real is just too kinetic on the wings. We need all the defensive players we can get - and if Cicinho is coupled with Giuly it's like opening a highway with a big sign saying "Free for all!" right in front of it.

  • CMP

Great game - we showed great posture coming back from 0-1 down! Well done... this is the Roma team we all love. And Doni still has a few drops but without us getting punished for it - AWESOME hehe! However I was wondering... did anyone else see how Mancini walked almost pissed right past TGIP out from the field. TGIP then yelled something at him. What was that about? Why so pissy?

  • Bashar

BASTARDOOOOO BEN *CLAP CLAP*, BEN LO BASTARDOOO *CLAP CLAP*, BASTARDOOOO BEEEEENNNNNNN…. SE VEDAMO CAZZA, *CLAP CLAP*!!!

Where is that mother fucker?? One more huh? Take that one more and shove it up your ass.. Please don't disgrace humanity by showing yourself in here.

  • Gianni
  • Jeff

AS mentioned many times above I don't understand the Cicinho situation either. He better start in Madrid. I hope Juan is Ok and Mancini certainly earned his contract tonight! What a goal!! Also respect to Pizarro nice finish.

  • Jeff

Much better from Il Capitano, as said above not his best but flashes of brilliance. That pass that led to Mancini's goal Bellissimo!!!!!!! Spalletti rest him now!

  • Chico

Considering how the game went, 2-1 is the best possible result, exactly the opposite of the Manchester game where 2-1 was a decent win but not acceptable considering how we dominated thaht game. Good sign.

De Rossi MOTM - amazing - and he's was ill yesterday. Superheroe.

I really dont get the Cicinho situation though. I think with Panucci we suffer defensively more than we would do with Cicinho because Panucci doesn't have the pace to stop wingers like Robben or Ronaldo.

I have a feeling Panucci (together with Totti) calls the shots in the Roma camp, not Spalletti.

I really hate Panucci now, he is a clear enemy of my favourite two guys, Cicinho and Aquilani. Someone please break his legs.

  • Lupo562

As far as the stabbing goes, I'll wait till someone reputable reports it. Goal.com has zero credibility...

  • Daniele

    And start Aqui.

Piq scored, but thats about all he did well.

  • brad

i still hate pizzaro, but lets not dwell on the negatives, mancini and mexes looked really good, de rossi was a monster as usual, hes gotta be the best defensive mid in the world, and totti should us what hes about, not quite at his best but he showed enough flashes. the king looked pretty good when he strolled on as well. lets just hope juan is ok, cause boy we need him!

  • danny

panucci, cassetti, tonetto - our weakest points, especially against teams like madrid and man utd. slow, can`t attack...why the hell they bought cicinho?!? he must play in madrid or it could be 5:0 or something like that, as roma were extremelly lucky tonight...
btw aquilani very bad again, can`t hold the ball, save time...overrated. it wasn`t david`s best game, but he`s still much better and useful.

  • Traian

If De Rossi and Totti don't get rest until the 2nd leg, Spalletti is an idiot!

  • Daniele

Hopefully Mancini will resign in the dressing in about 20 minutes.

  • Traian

    Stabbing near Olimpico.
    http://www.goal.com/en-US/Arti...
    We don't need this shit.

  • As far as I recall, Conti said that Mancini's contract talks were to take place on the night of Madrid encounter.

What a time to score a winning goal :-p !

  • Peter

MOTM - DeRossi - dirty work saved the game, esp. when it looked like it might get out of hand early.

  • Don Michele

Is someone from Roma suspended for the next leg?

  • chris

Roma proved in this game that they are contenders for glory. I'm so happy they were able to get their act together and win against a Real side who have been in good form.
    FORZA ROMA!

  • Loria1

ramos out for the next match!

  • Crap, 400. Well done, gentlemen and ladies.

  • Dhaw

I am praying hard for robben to break something before the 2nd leg and hoping Pizzaro to choke while blowing Spaletti so we dont get to see him start in Madrid.

Cant say me Bias eh ? :P

  • Daniele

Giuly, did alot of dirty work too..
    And Simo..
    They deserve credit..
Although if Simo or Giuly had a decent left foot the game w0uld be 4-1!!

  • Traian

    Yep, MOTM=DANIELE DE ROSSI
    He was unbelievable...unsung hero...dirty work...
    HALLELUYA PIZARRO!

  • Grazie Roma!

If DDR had missed the game, we would've gone down 3-0 in the first half. He's the real MOTM.

  • Daniele

    MOTM = De Mancini.

We will need help on the flanks in the next match..

    Maybe we will see Cici?

Either way, Grazie Roma, Mia Roma.

  • Dhaw

Ohhh Liverpool both goals were nice.
NO Matterazi for Inter in 2nd leg , which is HUGE for Pool.

  • Traian

    ...oh...and THANK YOU LIVERPOOL!

  • Eric

I certainly don't feel like we can play the same game at the Bernabeu and come out on top. Robben better get hurt before that game or it's going to be very difficult.

Drenthe, though dramatic, is a stud.

    MOTM--Mancini or DDR?

  • Justin

when is the return match? in 2 weeks wednesday?

  • Traian

Two weeks is plenty to prepare the return leg. WE NEED TO REST TOTTI AND DE ROSSI at least the weekend before the match. De Rossi deserves it and Totti NEEDS it.
    GRAZIE ROMA!

  • Mao Chunking

thank you JAY, that link worked great. it's sharper here at work than at home on my 20+ year old tv.

  • Gabriella

well Totti had 1 moment and that resulted in a goal.
That is better from Il Capitano. I think we can be happy with the performance after the shit month we have hopefully behind us

    I AM NOT SURPRISED.
This has been Roma all Season.
From 80th Minute Roma love to give its supporters a roller coaster ride. Nerve wrecking !
    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
