This is the point: Neither Totti, nor Zadine or anyone else is innocent for what they’ve done! Neither hitting, spiiting, head-butting, and all of that BS is/should be acceptable or defendable! Under any circumstances, except ON THE STREETS WHENEVER NECESSARY! However, all atheletes are/should be responsible enough to control their temperament on the field! That is part of being part of a professional athelete, at least ideally, that’s the way it should be!

Exactly, and no one here EVER said that spitting was right or not a bad thing or a classy thing to do in the least… it is definitely a terrible insult to spit on someone…. but anyone who thinks punching (or headbutting) someone WHO ISN’T LOOKING is an absolute fucking moron and needs to get punched just once (while looking even)… then u may realize the difference.

    let me re-present the equation

Poulsen kicks Totti (physical violence) then Totti spits at him (disrespectful action)

Materazzi chides Zidane (disrespectful action – quite common in most all sports i might add) then Zidane headbutts him TO THE GROUND (physical violence)

so what you are saying is that it is alright for disrespectful action to provoke violence, but not for violent action to beget an action of disrespect.

you guys are just Totti haters.

“if someone punches me i will punch back” … oh yeah? we are still talking football, not boxing, and on the football field you would get a red card for that.

so when Poulsen kicked Totti, Totti should have kicked him back? that is what you are saying.

if you want to put your example out on the street and test it in almost any free country, a headbutt or punch to the face or even a slap is aggravated assault (see LAW) and is punishable by PRISON TIME. spitting is not aggravated assault and you cannot do prison time for it. violence is illegal (in most free countries), where as spitting on people is not.

this is the stupidest debate i have ever heard because there is no real debate.

you may also want to read what the French press said about it after Zidick confessed to what Materazzi actually said.

and … Totti apologised, Zecocksucker never did.

always thought Zesuck was hyped, but i lost all respect for him after that incident

    excellent point Carangelo,

the fact that Zidane just turned around and cocked Materazzi without any fair warning is further evidence that, not only is he a prick of the greatest magnitude, but a cowardly fucker too.

by the way … i was looking for that curva sud clip on you tube when i got back, but there were a bunch.

is there something i can identify your version by?

I’m going to tell the story I was going to tell earlier, may be pointless here, idk… but i think it may prove a couple points.

Anyway, I was playing lacrosse as a senior against our schools most hated rival. I played Defense and they had this one attacker who was an absolute fucking dickhead, i knew that going in… and all of us always got into wars of words on the football and lacrosse field. Now, in this particular game he went too far. The whole time he was talking to me and my 2 fellow defenders about fucking our mothers and our sisters etc. I told him to shut his fucking mouth a thousand times, and told him to keep the trash talk amongst US PLAYERS… again and again he ignored me and kept getting worse, trying to get under our skin…. every time he scored, he would go to our fans and do a Hulk-hogan type salute to our parents.

Finally, after we tied the game up, he scored again… this time he went to our central defender’s sister and blew her a kiss, while making a gesture… This time I told him he went way too far and to cut his shit out…. then he replied to me “What are u going to do about it. NOTHING.”

As if i wasn’t pissed enough, that set me off… so I waited until the ball was on the other side of the field, stepped 10 yards back, waited for the asshole to turn towards me…. and then I absolutely lit him up. I mean the kid went flying.

Now, was that a classy thing to do on my part? NO… did he deserve it, hell yes he did. At the same time, I was the captain of the team and felt as though it was in my hands to teach this cocky mother fucker a lesson.

When I hit him, i heard a couple of our parents scream “YEAH VINNY!”… in addition, my coach praised me, as well as all of my teammates. And if i needed any more reassurance, my STRAIGHTEDGE A.P. Calculus teacher came up to me the next day and said “Vinny, I normally would never condone anything like that, but that was a great hit.”

Again, it was a cheap shot on my part, but would I do it again…. yes, in a heartbeat. To see a couple tears in the eyes of that mother fucker was absolutely priceless… I knew I wasn’t going to hurt him because it would have been a totally legal hit…. the only problem was that he didn’t have the ball, haha. Would it have been NEARLY as effective if i had SPIT on him?? Fuck no. It would have insulted him, pissed him off, etc. But it wouldn’t have put him in his place or humiliate him nearly as much as that hit. Therefore, a sucker-punch is MUCH WORSE to do to someone than spitting on someone.

now u can take that story as u want… u can think of me as a dirty player, whatever. I really don’t care. All i know is I was always the first person to help an opposing teammate up on the football field or whatever, and I KNOW that what I did to that fucker was 100% deserved

    Elmi on Totti …

“because he has very good positioning, perfect ball stopping technique … and almost telephatic pass to his team mates. he also has variety and good range in his game”

    yes, yes, yes

also i add that his touch reflexes on the ball are incredibly fast. he gets it and the next split second, he knows where to put it and sends it there more accurately than 1,000 other guys in 1/1,000th the amount of time.

Gio, no, the Totti/Zizou apologies were the same. Totti apologized to Italy for being a dumbass, Zizou apologized to France for being stupid. Neither apologized to their victims, so neither really counts as a real apology.

I don’t remember Poulsen “kicking” Totti, but I do remember Totti getting booked for a high tackle on a Danish defender.

who hits a coach? Fine, you were elbowed. You weren’t hurt. Be a man about it. Yeah Zidane shoul dhave been a man and ignored Materazzi’s insults. Have any of you played competitve sport? There is tons of trash talking and agitating tactic in every single sport.

The debate has nothing to do with tempers but rather who the better footballer was.

Not condoning Totti’s several instances…When you compare him as a person to Zidane, or even Nedved, the flaws might be equally bad. However, when you look at these players’ good qualities, Totti comes out on top. No one can say enough about the man’s loyalty to his club. He was born Romanista and will die Romanista and its not because he wasn’t wanted, or b/c he was making the big money, or even b/c Roma was always winning. He is just loyal and passionate to his club. You can argue about who has more or less class, but in this category, Totti stands alone as an example of what football should be all about.

Not making big money? Up until recently he was one of Serie A’s top earners. If I am not mistaken he still remains, comfortably, in the top 5.

Where do you guys come up with some of this stuff? You make it seem like he stayed and played at Roma for free. Sports is as much a business at that level as it is a passion. He was not the only player to remain loyal to a club. There have been players to do it for a lot less money too.

having re-read several accounts now of the incident, i concede that my interpretation of the original statement about Totti spitting seems incorrect:

“chiedo scusa per lo sputo a Poulsen” was the exact quote. in Italian this can be translated in two different ways – “i ask forgiveness to Poulsen for the spitting” or “i ask forgiveness for the spitting at Poulsen”. colloquially the second version is more proper, but when read quickly and out of context, i misunderstood and i stand corrected.

however, Totti was kicked by Poulsen about 2 minutes or so before the penalty. aslo, just before the spitting, Poulsen was caught on tape shouldering Totti in the back and this was shown on Danish and Italian TV. if you read the press on this

    http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/nazionale/2004/06-giugno/16/totti.shtmlyou

you will see. also according to Totti, he was being fouled repeatedly, most of all by Poulsen, over the course of the match.

i am not justifying what he did, just putting it in the context of violence begetting disrespect vs disrespect vs violence.

Paolo: no offense man, but that topic has been argued, reargued and debated here many many times…..For us, Totti will always blaze in our hearts as football’s (or ROMA’s) most loyal and priceless player, who is here beyond other reasons other than $$$. Anyhow, there’s NO need to dig up that skeleton again…..Anyways, thanks for the best wishes against Palermo.
