Azzurri-Ukraine Preview
By: chris | September 11th, 2007
Completely avoiding the mediocre boredom that was Saturday’s game, the Azzurri get a fresh start against an opponent looking to leap frog into a qualification spot in the Group B standings, which currently look like this:
Group B
France 19pts (8GP)
Scotland 18pts (8GP)
Italia 17pts (8GP)
Ukraine 13pts (7GP)
Scotland I’m not so worried about. France should beat them relatively easily, as should the Azzurri when they meet again in qualifying on November 17th. Ukraine I am worried about. Not only do they have a game in hand, but they’re highly underrated, very good and (the majority) have the advantage of playing in a league that runs throughout the summer, putting them in mid-season form in a vastly difficult climate. A win vaults puts them right in the mix with their next two games against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania, which is code for “a quick 6 points”.
So, I think we can easily say: Must win game. Should they win? Absolutely. The reigning champs take an embarrassing amount of talent, experience and a winning mentality into Kiev. But will they win? Maybe. There are just too many questions right now. Will Donadoni be out-thought? Will the same creatively challenged team from the San Siro show up? Will the strike force resemble a roaring lion or a terrified kitten? Will Gennaro Gattuso get sent off and/or kill somebody? Will Donadoni field Gigi Buffon and 10 central midfielders? Will a nuclear disaster render the game moot? See, just way too many questions to be answered right now.
The Squads
Azzurri:
Keepers: Amelia (Livorno), Buffon (Juventus), Curci (Roma)
Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), F Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Chiellini (Juventus), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Lyon), Oddo (Milan), Panucci (Roma), Zambrotta (Barcelona)
Midfielders: Ambrosini (Milan), Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Foggia (Cagliari), Gattuso (Milan), Perrotta (Roma), Pirlo (Milan)
Strikers: Del Piero (Juventus), Di Natale (Udinese), Iaquinta (Juventus), Inzaghi (Milan), C Lucarelli (Shakhtar Donetsk), Quagliarella (Udinese)

Tactics & Lineup
Rumors abound that The Don Dada will be switching up to an attacking 4-2-3-1, a formation that has worked offensive wonders for a certain Serie A team which shall go nameless. The formation is simple: run your ass off, especially on the wings, attack, attack, attack, and defend. It’s not exactly a “play for the nil-nil draw” formation.
Basically the entire team is healthy and only Ivan The Terrible is suspended because, well, he’s a fucking animal, but I think we’ll see a few changes here. There is no reason to change the back four, and Gigi is between the sticks as long as Gigi damn well pleases. But they’ll all certainly have their hands full with the Andriys: Shevchenko and Voronin. Andrea Pirlo is healthy and absolutely should be playing the full 90, as he was easily the best player with any offensive ability against France. His partner should be Daniele De Rossi, who got a few blisters on his feet Saturday but will be able to tough it out tomorrow (get rid of the damn Adidas boots). If not Massimo Ambrosini will probably get the spot because, well, he plays for Milan. Same as that Donadoni guy. Either Simone Perrotta or Alberto Aquilani* will probably play at trequartista, and one will probably replace the other at some point. Up top will probably be Cristiano Lucarelli, whose name is written all over this game, seeing as how he plays in the UPL and all. Flanking The Commie will probably be the biggest question. One seemingly obvious choice would be Fabio Quagliarella, who has been awesome ever since he first put on the shirt, but there is still little explanation as to why Antonio Di Natale is put on the bench ahead of him on Saturday. Who the hell knows. At this point the best guess would be Alex Del Piero and either Di Natale or Fab Quag’s flanking Lucarelli.
* - If Aquilani doesn’t play in this whole trip my next post is going to be titled: Why Roberto Donadoni Needs To Die.
My Preferred Lineup:
Gigi;
Panucci, Barzagli, Canna, Zambrotta;
De Rossi, Pirlo;
Quags, Aquilani, Del Piero;
Lucarelli.
I know Del Piero isn’t ideal, but he’s really the lesser of the evils. Iaquinta or Di Natale are potential options, or maybe even Simone Perrotta; after all, this is where Lippi used him last summer. DDR and King Alberto are so gifted and both have played so well to start the year that it’s hard to leave either out of the XI. I put Panucci in for his attacking abilities and knowledge of the system. Other that, pretty self-explanatory.
Predictions
Score: 2-0 Italia
Goals: Aquilani 37′, Quagliarella 49′
MOTM: Aquilani
Where: Kiev
Stadium:
Time: 20:45 Italian time, 2:45 EST US.

Chris.. Your hated Di Natale score twice.. Aside from a few games where everyone played poorly, he’s done quite well for Italy.

He’s been invisible except for two passes laid directly onto his head/foot.
And I don’t care what the box score says, that first goal was Pirlo’s.

i almost wanted italy to lose so donadoni would be sacked. leaving aquilani and de rossi on the bench???? di natale and iaquinta? it’s not like italy have wright-phillips and lennon flying up the wings putting in crosses to target men, di natale and iaquinta were basically useless. donadoni is such an idiot it hurts. ukraine outplayed us for 90 minutes, we got EXTREMELY lucky, donadoni should be thanking the stars for cannavaro, pirlo and zambrotta.

and Buffon.

Buffon was huge I hear.. As much as I love seeing France in 3rd, we still need to beat Scotland. A tie is no good against them right now seeing as how they won. Now we hope Ukraine take points off of France.. I really wanna see Italy and Scotland go through.

Vucinic scored for Montenegro, again! Good job Vooch!

ricci hit it on the nose
di natale got all the praise but pirlo scored the first one and anybody on a team like the azzurri should put away a breakaway, other than that the front line was useless.
the azzurri got completely outplayed

if italy don’t have buffon, they are last in the group. pretty simple.

thanks chris. i think me and you could probably coach the azzurri to the semis in Euro 08. this team has so much talent, so much potential - but a brainless retard manning the helm.
iaquinta and di natale barely even played any defense. at least when inzaghi is up top he is always running around trying to cause problems for the back 4. that game was basically an 11 on 9 because those 2 retards up top barely moved. ambrosini was god awful, one good pass that led to the goal which kind of validates donadoni’s selection. i feel bad saying this but panucci didn’t look great either. camorenesi might have the worst first touch on the team and someone teach oddo how to cross the ball. i think we’d have a better chance against scotland just fielding the azzurrini with pirlo in midfield.

Oh man, didn’t see the game, but I hear we got pretty damn lucky. Something needs to be done, I don’t remember the last time Italy had a truly convincing win.
Well, maybe the 4-1 to Germany in the friendly pre-World Cup.
Anyway, Romanista SA: that article that says De Rossi didn’t see a future for himself at Roma is mistranslated, I’m pretty sure. I read the Italian interview and he said he didn’t see a good future FOR Roma, with the coach crisis and short funds and all.

Thanks Vlad.
I watched the full Italy game on RAI and needless to say I have no hair or nails left.
Despite the win, we were garbage. What’s worse is Di Natale will probably start from now on. Although the second goal was a decent finish, he was anonymous throughout the game.
I’m glad Aquilani played some part though, albeit the last quarter hour or so.
Oh, and any person that plays Ambrosini ahead of De Rossi does not deserve to coach even Partick Thistle.

I’m happy De Rossi didn’t play. He gets rested and his blisters get to heal fully.. We need all our guys for this upcoming stretch.. Between September 16 and October 7 (less than a month) we play Reggina, Dynamo Kiev, Juventus, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Man Utd, and Parma..
Glad Panucci, Aquilani, De Rossi, Mexes, Vuci, Juan, Doni, and Barusso came back in one piece. The same can’t be said about Inter who just lost Chivu to injury.

…and again…who’s this Chivu guy?!

So..
If we win out, and Scots do too, let’s say Ukraine and France draw..
We would need a win in Scotland to advance?Can we do some “what if’s” this morning? Just stiking up things that could happen?
Totti come back…

Until Scotland-Italy, the scots have 2 tough matches: Ukraine at home and at Georgia. I don’t think they are going to take more than 3 maybe 4 points in these 2 matches. Therefore, a draw in Scotland will be enough for Italy. I am sure the italians will get 6 points from Georgia and Faroe matches. If Scotland gets 6 points from Ukraine and Georgia, Italy needs a BIG WIN in Glasgow. All in all, I really hope the French will stay home next summer.

As much as hate capello, I think he is ideal for the Azzurri.
