Azzurri Get Outplayed For 90, Win Despite Donadoni

08ap.JPGUkraine 1 - Boys in Blue 2

3 points is a nice consolation, but nobody’s kidding themselves here, the Azzurri got out-played. Period. Luckily a few moments of class can make up for that and the boys get to head home 2nd place in Group B, behind surprise leaders Scotland.

I’m so tired of writing about the Azzurri’s games and I don’t want to go into too much detail here, but here are just some observations from the game:

i) Antonio Di Natale is going to get all the credit, but that first goal was Pirlo’s and the second goal had to be put away, and if it wasn’t we’d all be calling for him to never see another minute in the shirt. Plus, it was placed directly at his foot.

ii)
Speaking of placing that ball at Di Natale’s foot, Massimo Ambrosini was useless for 89:59. Why he played over Daniele De Rossi is a mystery for the ages. The doc said the blisters were fine, and knowing DDR’s character and determination, blisters weren’t going to keep him from that game.

iii)
Sheva needs to be mercifully sold by by Roman ASAP. I can’t stand him, but his talent is rotting in London. Sell him anywhere but back to Serie A.

iv) Why was Andriy Voronin on the pine? I don’t care about tactics. It’s not like Ukraine can afford to keep his talent on the bench for the majority of the game. His impact was evident immediately.

v) We really really miss Luca Toni. Seriously. For a guy who spent the bulk of his career in the Lega Calcio dungeons, he has become shockingly indispensable. And goddamnit, why did he go to Germany? Come back, Luca.

vi)
The Don Dada STILL needs to be fired. They’re winning despite him, not with or because of him. He put out yet another scared lineup without any semblance of a dynamic offense.

vii) Who knew Christian Panucci was about to become an Azzurri regular at the ripe young age of 72?

viii)
How the hell did Vincenzo Iaquinta go from being an injury-replacement call-up to starting over 4 other strikers? If he was the right choice, wouldn’t he have been there in the first place? No? Explain that one to me, Don. Because he didn’t do jack.

ix) That was one of the better refereed games I’ve seen in a long time. One doesn’t get to throw out those compliments often. Kudos to Howard Webb & Co.

x)
Andrea Pirlo is that damn good. Seriously. What a ball. What a talent. What a mane. (GHD 2? Naaah.)

xi)
Gigi Buffon is not human. Nor is he 30 yet. Years of jaw-dropping saves ahead of us.

xii) Who replaces Canna, who will miss the Georgia game for too many accumulated yellows? Panucci? Honestly, that’s a real question.

xiii) Which begs the question: should FIFA adopt a rule that if a player as fucking brilliant as Philippe Mexes gets no love for his NT, he can switch countries mid-career? Because this is just getting flat-out bullshit. Julien Escude? Really? Come on. There needs to be a whole new category beyond “chromosome challenged” for Domenech.

xiv) How much has Andrea Barzagli improved over the past few games? Impressive from the young-ish lad.

What It Means

The big deal of the day was obviously the France-Scotland game, because it kind of make a logjam at the top of Group B. I’m sure most people were hoping Scotland would win, but you won’t see me rooting for France unless the most dire circumstances arise, and that hasn’t happened yet. So now Group B looks like this:

Group B
Scotland 21pts (9GP)
Italia 20pts (9GP)
France 19pts (9GP)
Ukraine 13pts (8GP)

Ukraine’s pretty much out now, barring an act of divine proportions. Now the biggest factor is how the schedule’s shake out the rest of the way, and here’s how they look:

Azzurri:

13.10.2007 Georgia (H)
17.11.2007 Scotland (A)
21.11.2007 Faroe Islands (H)

Scotland:

13.10.2007 Ukraine (H)
17.10.2007 Georgia (A)
17.11.2007 Italy (H)

France:

13.10.2007 Faroe Islands (A)
17.10.2007 Lithuania (H)
21.11.2007 Ukraine (A)

The biggest game is obviously Scotland-Azzurri, a game that will be tough but that they boys should win - so long as Donadoni gives them a fighting chance. However, it’s time to start rooting for the ex-commies, because they are now our new best friends. They play both the Scots and la Frenchies, and are more than capable of being spoiler in this group. The only other way I can see someone else helping out is if Lithuania can muster up a draw against Les Bl;eus in France, which is always a tough task, but look what Scotland did. In fact, I would not be surprised to see a nil-nil draw there. But realistically, start waving that yellow and blue flag, because if they can poach a point here and a point there, they will make the Azzurri’s job much easier. At this point they should advance, but we’ll see how The Don Dada feels about that.

Now the mildly exhausting (I blame TDD) international break is over and we can get back to Roma Roma Roma. The game’s against Reggina is on Sunday and I’ll be back with Roma news ad nauseam tomorrow.

Now let’s pray Donadoni is fired by the time the Georgia game rolls around.

I don’t want Mancini to go, and I don’t think Spal would want a headcase like Fred, but 30m is a great offer.

That said, it’s probably complete bullshit.

I think 30m is more than enough for Mancini. But the reason the rumor makes me say wtf is that it would be retarded of Lyon to trade a striker for a winger when they already have half a dozen wingers and only two strikers. Lyon need a striker.

But you know, maybe seeing Benzema and even Baros scoring every week will wake Fred up from his funk and he might even be a normal human being again come October.

Fred would probably be the worst Trade-in for Mancini that i could possibly think of, honestly I’d prefer if “tacco di Dio” stayed with us. And why would Mancini want to go play for Lyon anyway…? Udinese could also, probably, win a gazillion back-to-back titles in Ligue A.

    good point martha.

the azzurri really have no real wingers except camero. its a problem. i like that we still got scotland in our scheduel i would prefer it a home game but atleast it leaves our destiny in our own hands. interesting group.

for the tournement we need a totti-toni forward line. no (de nat-inq; del-inzagi) i have a feeling totti will be back for the finals, he has unfinished business with italia.

Thanks John, I felt that sincerity. John, and Chris have both said you don’t think Totti is gone for good, and since you’re Roma folk you probably have a better sense of him thn I do, so I mostly believe you. But why would he handle it this way if he knew he was coming back? And if he played for another club — say, Lazio, or Juve — would you feel as generous about him retiring and then coming back as The Savior?

Chris, I gotta chime in here and give Di Natale a little credit for the first goal. Clearly it was the ball from Pirlo that was the brilliant part of the sequence, but I don’t think the ball would have gone in without Di Natale’s redirection. It was a well-placed ball that we should expect of any striker lucky enough to don the Azzurri shirt. What Di Natale showed was the ability to put away his chances, something we have not seen much from the likes of Gila and ADP.

Ya.. the ball from Pirlo was well off the target, but was delivered well into a great area where Di Natale, Iaquinta, or any of the others up there could’ve gotten a head/foot to it..

I think Donadoni got the tactic right this time (although I’m a little biased since it’s Roma’s formation). The players, not so much. Quags should’ve been on for Camo and I still think Di Natale should be up top with Iaquinta on the wing..

Billi: Fred was offered before and Roma refused but know that he’s been injured, Roma should be all over him…

1 thing about Amantino ”Heel of God” Mancini, or Mr. Inconsistence; This year he won’t have the choice to be consistent because of Roma’s depth. He’ll have to play good every game if not he’ll be subbed. I think that will be a good thing for Roma and MAncini. Plus, he’s trying to extend his contract, and players usually do well when they’re playing for that next big contract…

1 last thing: Di Natale SUCKS,BIG TIME.

He can’t get to much credit for yesterday(like Chris explained)

Anybody playing that position after Del Piero’s display against France would of looked great…

Please can someone make sure he won’t come to Roma…

Martha, sure people here are pro-Totti but I don’t think it matters in this case, I don’t feel any ill towards a not exactly much older Nesta also retiring.

But Nesta’s staying away, Rickard — I mean everyone’s apparently openness to Totti’s “retiring” during the qualifiers and then coming back as the conquering hero for the tournament.

Wow.. how is it that Italy went from having one of the feared strike forces in the World to having nobody competent..

Before the World Cup I was singing the praises of Totti, Gilardino, Toni, Iaquinta, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Lucarelli, Di Natale, Di Michele, Miccoli, and to a lesser extent Di Vaio, Cassano, etc… Most of them were doing well..

Now we’re struggeling to find anyone but Toni who is half competent.. I suggest recalling Vieri or Gilardino.

Notice how I left Rocchi out of the previous list of Italian strikers.. ;)

Chris, remember your prediction of Chivu getting injured right before the start of the CL and leaving Inter with 12 strikers and -literally- no central defenders? Well…

    http://sports.alice.it/it/cmc/calcio/200737/cmc_113441.html

For those who cannot read that, it says Chivu got injured during a Romania game, leaving Inter with only young Rivas at central defense, because of injuries to other defenders and DQs as a result of that wonderful Valencia game. Estimates (it doesn’t say it there) put Chivu out of action for 3 weeks to a month at least. Karma, baby.

    1. Di Natale is 30 and has 15 caps, there’s a reason for that.

    2. You don’t have to be Nostradamus to predict Chivu is going to get injured, but I’ll take the credit.

    3. The differences between Juan and Chivu are already slapping us in the face. Chivu is injured, Juan is sitting out games so he doesn’t. Juan all the way.

    4. Vieira & Rivas? Wasn’t Rivas supposed to be loaned out? Damn, I can’t wait for that game.

    5. I can’t wait to watch the train wreck this season that is Roberto Mancini - the highest paid coach in Serie A - actually having to coach without filling out his lineup card based on who has the biggest salary, and is therefore the better player.

Rivas and Cesar were both supposed to be loaned out. Cesar’s already started once, and Mancini is surely stabbing himself in the eye right now for not putting Cesar on the CL roster, since he can play in the back. (And yes, they’re both being well-paid.)
