“A doping case against Roma and Italy striker Francesco Totti has been dropped following an initial investigation.

Italian FA’s website featured a statement saying that its Federal Court of Justice had agreed to archive the case after a request from the Italian Olympic Committee’s anti-doping unit.

It gave no details of the possible offence committed by Totti but Italy’s ANSA news service said the 31-year-old had been late for a routine doping test on May 13th.

It is understood, however, that the reason for his tardiness was the birth of his second child, which occurred on the same day.

Anti-doping authorities were obliged to conduct preliminary investigations but were not compelled to release news of the offence publicly. If new evidence emerges, the case can be reopened, although this is unlikely given the circumstances. At no point in his career has Totti ever been implicated in the use of drugs.

A key player for Italy in their 2006 World Cup triumph before retiring from the national team afterwards, Rome-born Totti scored 26 Serie A goals for Roma last season and has continued the form into the current campaign.”
